[Q] Quick way to switch between roms? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im currently using RCMix ROM but want to try out MIUI.
If I dont like MIUI I want to be able to revert to RCMix exacatly how i have it on my phone atm (Apps, Settings, Msgs etc)
Im guessing that if I do a backup using CWM that will save everything exactly how it is now?
Then I can install MIUI and if I dont like it, I can just restore using CWM and not have to worry about kernels, radios, apps, settings etc?

Correct. Just use the Backup Current ROM in ROM Manager (or use Recovery) and everything is saved.
I recommend you do this every time you change (or even upgrade) a ROM as it makes it easy to go back.

I use MyBackup because it can back up *.apk files and their associated data.
Titanium backup
http://matrixrewriter.com/android/
The only backup app you will ever need
ROM manager backs up and restores everything for me when I switch from rom to rom. Just set up everything once while on each rom and create a backup for each to restore to. I also us Titanium backup to backup my apps but you don't need it if you just want to restore your settings and apps as you saved it in rom manager.

[Q] nandroid restore: does it remove the custom rom and replace it with stock?

Might be a pretty basic qtn but heres the deal.
I took a nandriod backup of dk28 (no root) and then flashed it with nebula rom. Now since the rom was new, all my data/contacts/apps etc are gone obviously.. I am wondering if I did a restore of the nandroid restore, will it restore all that (ie sms/email/contacts/data/apps) or is it used to go back to stock rom only, ie it will remove my custom rom and put back the stock as it was pre flashing nebula?
All I need is a way to keep the custom rom but also restore my sms/email/apps etc.
Thanks!

It will restore everything excatly how it was when you saved it. Including your Texts/Mail etc that were in your inbox at the time you saved. You are basically going back to the exact point where you saved. You can create backups for every rom you have, it is not just for putting your phone back to stock. I always back up stock first, so I can always go back if needed.
Thanks Heelfan71..I understand it puts back everything as it was .. but will I loose my custom rom after that is my question.

If you restore your backup? Yes you will loose your custom rom, unless you make a backup of that too (this is what I do). So you can go back and forth between the 2 if needed. Is that what you were wondering?
basically i want to switch back and forth the roms but keep my data intact.. right now after flashing the new rom.. i have obviously lost all my sms/emails/apps etc.. is there a one click solution which will restore all my data on every new rom i install?
edit: Also , I did take a titanium backup before I flashed the new rom.. but i didnt do a complete (ALL) backup, since I couldnt find a option to backup all. I had to choose each service/app/etc to backup.. so I ended up backing up all the stuff that I understood..but restoring them hasnt restored my sms/email data yet.
Do an advanced restore->restore /data in cwm.
I've had pretty good luck keeping my contacts, apps, and settings this way. Some people see weird force close issues after restoring /data. Check it out and see if it works for you.
thaniks.. i ll give it a try .. i thought about it.. but wasnt sure what exactly it does.
did that .. now that removed the rom manager and spare parts.. not sure what else it did.. but it did bring everything sms/apps/emails back ..
i guess i can install rom manager from the market..
If you only restore data your custom rom will stay. It will only restore your apps and app data. If you are restoring data from a rom on the same file system, you should be fine.
In other words, flashing VIPERrom 4.0.3 EXT4, then backing up, then flashing Bonsai 1.1.4 on RFS, then restoring data is not a good idea.
@ryno502 makes sense....thats what i did and it did restore everything.. Thanks!
now i ve to find some good widgets and lockscreen changes..
Nandroid restore on Custom ROM
I own a Xperia Arc(LT 15i)..rooted,unlocked...
I have Cyanogenmod, stable version running on my phone now...
I had taken a nandroid backup using CWM Auto-installer...
But now I wanna know how can i restore my apps that i had with Stock ROM...i tried a advanced backup on /data alone but then, its not booting up if i do so...
Please help..
Xperia?
Your data is incompatible with CM. You will need to download apps again unless you have a Titanium Backup.

Switching roms

Is there an easy way to switch between roms on my evo? There is two roms I like and would like to hop back and fourth between them...but I may can only flash one at a time...any ideas? I think I saw a program called rom manager? Maybe that will allow me to do that?
Thanks!
ROM Manager, it is. A blessing.

You could use rom manager. Backup the roms you want to use and when you want to switch use the restore option in rom manager.
yes. use nandroid back-up and easily flash between whatever it is you wish.
wether it be clockwork mod or amon ra!
K this might be a stupid question, but with Rom manager you can easily switch back and forth between roms, i understand that fact, but can you flash files with Rom manager? I usually have to reboot into recovery and then flash a certain file and reboot.
I just bought clockwork premium! WOOHOO!
Right now I am running a sense rom...lets say I get rom manager to install Cyanogen rom...will it erase all my apps ect? Or when I switch between the roms will it save everything as is?
THANKS!
You wouldn't want to just keep flashing the ROMs over and over, you would want to create nandroid backups of each and then just restore which ever one you are in the mood for. You can do this with Rom Manager or Amon Ra. That way, when you switch, it will restore with all your apps and data that were on the phone when you created the backup.
you can use rom manager to do all that stuff, but i definitly reccommend booting into recovery, doing a backup of the roms you like, then when you want to switch roms, boot into recovery again, and just use the restore feature, this way u can switch between to two roms without have to reflash and reset them up, all ur doing is restoring the backup
Use Titanium back up for ur apps then back up ur ROM via ROM Manager which will bring you into recovery and do the rest. So now u got ur apps backed up for any ROM u decide to use.

Stock ROM + Another Rom??

I'm currently using 4.22.651.2 Rooted & Odexed - updated 06/05/11 on my Evo and wanted to know how I can have the Sense Rom installed along with [6-21-11][ROM] gingerbread-evo-deck [1.2][2.3.4 Stable] while using Rom Manager to swap back and forth?
I'm not asking if I should use Rom Manager either so don't come in here and say Rom Manager is crap, as that's not what I'm asking 'tough guys'...
There is no dual boot that does this quickly. You would need to back up one then restore the other to switch between ROMs. I never used ROM manager, but backups should work the same way. The backing up and restoring takes a while though so it may be a pain in the ass.

go into rom manager/ backup and restore/ create a back up of one, then flash the other and do the same. write down the names of the backups so you can tell which one is which, backup first one go into restore and see the name of that backup, same with second one.
i use amon ra, but it works the same. then when ever you want to switch to the sense rom from decks just restore that backup, or vice versa.
before doing the backups make sure you have it all setup with apps you want and all, so that you dont have to setup the phone everytime you restore a backup.
if it helps thanks button

Just to clear this up, I keep my current rom, use rom manager and make a backup and name it 'stock' or something similar. Then flash my phone with rom X and once that is up and running I then make that backup, then I can go into rom manager and switch from the stock and the X one?
X being whatever rom I install.

yes but you wont be able to re-name it, what i do is document last 4 digits in the name and write down what rom that is for example: 0713 is my kings 7.4 rom
0109 is my synergy rom and so on. but other than that yes exactly, make sure you install all the apps you use when installing the (x) rom so that when you restore you wont have to re-install them everytime.
sorry it took so long to reply, lost internet in the middle of typing this out.
and remember thanks button if this helps
Contrary to what I said above, I just saw this on the XDA portal:
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/boot-up-to-4-different-roms-with-dualromx2/
Anyone know if it works on the EVO? The EVO is very similar to the incredible, I would think it would work.

[Q] New Kernel is messing phone up, how to flash stock Gingerbread kernel?

Well I'm not sure if this is the right forum, if not please just point me in the right direction. Well after upgrading to Gingerbread (ota) I rooted my phone, I flashed a new kernel and now alot of things are messing up; I cant access wifi, watch videos, take pic/vid, etc etc. I'm just wondering how I can return it back to the original Gingerbread kernel? I just want it to work right again. I guess I didnt backup my phone right because I dont see a backup file.
If you did a backup, boot into recovery and try to restore. Your recovery knows where the backup is stored.
I'm sure there's a download for the stock HTC kernel, but I don't know where. I've really been out of the loop on Sense stuff recently.
Find the stock rooted rom (the odexed version) and download it. Put it on the root of your SD card and boot into recovery. Make a nandroid backup even though your phone is messed up, at least it boots. Wipe cache and dalvik cache then flash the rom. You should be good to go.
If that doesn't work then restore your backup. Backup any apps/data you want to save with Titanium Backup. If you want to save texts, there are apps for that. Then boot into recovery and do a full wipe and flash the rom. You can restore your apps and texts once you have the rom booted and set up.
You flashed an incompatible kernel - probably an AOSP kernel. Next time read a little more about what you're doing and make sure that you fully understand something before you do it.
Sent from my Evo + MIUI using Tapatalk!
It's not hard. You just have to flash a kernel that matches your ROM, be it Sense or AOSP. I'm assuming you're running Sense, so just look for a Sense Kernel.
Put it on your SD Card, clear Dalvik-Cache and Cache and flash the kernel and you should be OK
Mount data in recovery before you flash the kernel. After wiping cache and dalvik, as mentioned earlier
Make sure you are using a Sense Gingerbread kernel. Custom kernels include ChopSuey, Freedom, Golden Monkey and newest PoonSense.
