Cpu scaling question - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Will there be any problems with my phone if I have max cpu speed at 800 or lower?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App

No. Just don't expect enough of a battery gain for it to be worth it.
Texted while driving

I use my phone in a very hot environment so I just want it to stay cool.
How much will under scaling effect heat produced?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk

The term is underclocking. It might help, but CPU temperatures vary with each phone, the best bet would be to just give it a try.

K I'll try that

If you haven't already, you might want to also install a widget that monitors vital stats, like temperature. I use one called TEMP+CPU Pro. It monitors CPU usage, clock speed, temperature, and available RAM and only takes up the space of one icon on your desktop.

I've been capped to 800mhz on a kernel that goes up to 1.3ghz for 2 weeks now. No problems.

Well if it makes your face smile, I run at 600mhz.

Seriously?
Do you get any lag?
I'm currently on EXT4, VisionKernel 1.0, deOdexed EC05 and when I clock down to 600 MHz, my Epic stutters here and there.

Voltage control settings?

I'm on sfr 1.2 with genocide 1.1 final kernel, what are optimal settings for voltage control for speed, everytime I put it at 1.4 it instantly freezes and I have to pull battery, then when I put it at 1.3 it will be fine foor a little while but if I multitask like using music player the phone freezes and I must pull battery again, what should the speed mhz and voltage be?
100-1000mhz= -100uv....
1120mhz= -75uv....
1200mhz=-50uv....

Going any lower with the high speeds gets me freezes and going any lower with the slower speeds gets me freezes and data corruption/loss...I've been stable for some good time with these settings

Every Epic is different. I can run 1400 all day but can't undervolt at all. Some people can't run over 1200. It just depends on your phone. If things are freezing or shutting down on 1300 or 1400, your phone most likely can't handle it

The phone runs great and crazy fast at 1200 or 1300 but i was just wondering if i could get that little bit extra boost to 1400, but i guess if my phone cant handle those speeds im just going to have to be happy with fast. lol

Also, (well its probably not recommended) some people have paid for the Extreme key for Voltage Control and OVERvolted a bit to get 1400 stable but I wouldn't recommend it unless Xan says you are good. The option is there though. I have it but haven't had the need to try overvolting

On topic: I've never noticed any performance differences when I overvolted. What benefits have people gained? I'm using Twilight 1.1.1 at 1.3 ghz and the phone glides without extra power.

I think overvolting may help people whose phone crashes say at 1.3. If you have it stable without overvolting, I wouldn't even mess with it. 1.3 and 1.4 are already using more voltage than what's considered optimal for our phones

Sounds right. The stock settings are 1000 high and 400 low. Most people can lower the minimum to 200 with no problem. Some can run at 100 with no problem. Same goes for overclocking. Not all phones can handle 1300 and 1400. Then if you undervolt on top of lowering the minimum to say 200 or 100, you may be getting the wakelock or "Sleep of Death" lol

Thanks yall...after research..i thought i undervolted too much...but i been at that setting since i bought set cpu...i think the difference was..i switched kernel to genocide yesterday..aka..the same day i met the sleep of death..im back to the vision kernel now...what are some of yalls settings for set cpu???
I can go 1300 high to 100 low with on demand and no lock. But runs a little to hot for my taste so I usually go to 1000 to 100 I prefer battery life over speed. I am also running Bonsai that has great battery life on top of it.

What temperature is considered "overheating"?

I have been overclocking my CPU lately, sitting good right now at 1.2 ghz. I have it undervolted as well to prevent overheating. My question is what temperature do you associate with too hot? 100 F? more?
I dont like letting my phone get over 95 F, but im just curious to know what is considered a safe temperature range.
I cant directly measure my CPU temp, as that feature is not offered on our phone which really sucks, i have to go by the battery.
I have not the slightest clue but I would think you would go by how it feels in your hand and whether or not you can "smell" the cpu burning. I usually dnt clock it above 1.2 unless I'm gaming which is bad but I have it setup by a laptop cooler so it never overheats. Id say anything more than 90 would be pushing it.....

Not true put it like this our phones automatically shut off @ 122*F I go to 115*F when i play GTA 3 @ 1.5Ghz, but i can clock to 104*F just streaming music on WiFi.
So id say personally probably around 110*F+
Yes 105*F is hot but don't run it that high forever though.
But thats the battery, CPU stays fine so id say if your running 100*F+ For more than an hour than it might overheat??? Not completely sure but like i said everyday i play GTA 3 and get up to those temps.

Do you undervolt your cpu or run it on stock cpu voltages? I'm currently running samurai assassination and my phone always crashes if I undervolt it, and usually crashes when I run it at max voltages, but only when I overclock.

I would consider 114 f overheating, that's when I have setcpu underlock to 800 mhz

Used to but because i play GTA 3 now i dont if undervolt that defeats the sole purpose to overclock so i can play without lag, once you undervolt it decreases performance but however gains in battery life.

Or instead of using the app (since it murders the battery life) you could just change the min frequency of your CPU to like, 600mhz or higher and it does the same thing as this app

No it doesnt do the same thing. I have my cpu set at 1800 performance and this mod clearly makes a difference above and beyond that.
And it may burn battery a bit faster but it doesn't "murder" your battery. I've been heavily using my phone with the mod on for 6 hours and have used about 40% of the battery. Pretty normal burn rate for browsing, texting and watching netflix non stop.

Snapdragon 800

I'm a huge gaming nut, I game on my pc, xbox360, ps3 and on my android phones. I've noticed that it doesn't take much time for the note 3 and it's gpu/cpu to heat up to the point where it's almost to hot to hold. This wasn't a problem on the note2 and it's exnyos cpu, I'm loving the slimness of the phone but thinking that's also why it gets hot soo fast.
I generally don't play too long, mostly 15-20 minute sessions of dead trigger 2, Asphalt 8 or Riptide 2. Anyone else notice this? I'm thinking maybe when the ZL battery comes thru and the extra bulkiness it will take a bit longer to heat up. That or maybe it's time for companies like Seidio,Otterbox etc to make some liquid cooled phone cases lol

I'm not playing with the phone charging, matter of fact I just played about 4 missions on dead trigger 2 and it's already starting to get too hot. It's gotta be the snapdragon chip, none of my other phones have ever gotten this hot in soo little time.
Again I haven't overclocked or play while charging ever. This phone needs a water cooling case for reals lol

Remove mpdecision from /system/bin (but just rename it.. Add "00" to the beginning or something) and run with all 4 cores online. You will find you get better battery life and your device will not ramp as much.
This is what I do personally...
Ondemand
Deadline
io_is_busy - 1
up_threshold - 95
sampling_rate - 20000
Stock has up_threshold at 85 or 90 if I'm not mistaken, way too aggressive for a processor of this caliber.
And mpdecision is way too aggressive. I don't need all 4 CPUs spinning up to max when I open my messages app.
Also, edit your /system/etc/init.qcom.post_boot.sh file to have this line it (see picture)

Wow!
Did everything you said in your earlier post and I'm noticing it running way cooler now. Normally after 3-4 missions on dead trigger 2 it's getting pretty hot near the camera when holding it in landscape mode, now it just seems to idle normally.
So before I tweaked my system root and set cpu settings was it only utilizing 1 or 2 cores thus stressing more and making the snapdragon soc run hotter? These games are very graphic intensive and could use extra cores running to keep everything running more smoothly and cooler (which you have now achieved developmrntbro!!)
I advise anyone experiencing what I was dealing with to do the same and be amazed how much better it runs now, thanks again for the knowledge :good:

Trying this out as well. I don't game, but I do a lot of downloading & streaming, and the phone does tend to get very hot during. I did this about an hour ago, I'm torrenting and so far it's still not hot and the battery isn't flying out the window like it usually would be. Nice!

My Note 3 doesn't get hot like yours, unless I play a game such as Madden 25 over a 40 minute period, then it's moderately hot, nothing compared to my previous phones, and that list includes the Note 2. I love everything about this Note 3 except the camera, it has a hard time focusing on some things close up, and sometimes at a distance too, I resent the camera, I did see in another thread that I am not the only one with this problem, only problem is I did not wait for the root de la vega or else I would've ordered a replacement already.........
