Permanent 1x, no 3g service - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was running Myn's, decided to flash Calkulin's. Downloaded all the latest radios, the format all, and the rom image. Once i flashed the latest radio onto Calkilin's i started noticing that I only have 1x, not 3g, service everywhere i go. I drove the local sprint store (about 5 minutes away) to test to see if I just had a bad signal, rebooted the phone and still had 1x service.
I restored the data profile by doing ##3282# going into the profile and restoring all the settings. Problem is this fixes the 3g service, but I lose the ability to receive phone calls.
I have also tried updating/downgrading trying different roms. Problem seems to follow. Couple of friends are having this issue, all of us are trying different things and not coming to any conclusion.
Any help is appreciated

could some mod please take down the link to calkulin's 1.8? 1.7.7 is such a good rom, but 1.8 is just causing problems left and right.
this same thing happened to me and a bunch of other people. it's calkulin's extended menus.
wipe and reflash his rom. then dload msl reader from market. get your msl. then go to dialer and type ##data#. choose edit, and enter ur msl. choose mode of operation, and make sure its on automatic. then, without going into settings at all, boot into recovery, wipe, adn flash another rom. check if its working now. if not, repeat. it'll work eventually.

totally wipe and flash a stock rooted rom, then do the data/hard reset. if all else fails run the RUU, then root again and go from there. ive had this happen before and it can be a pain in the rear to fix. you may just want to start over fresh.

ruu didn't help me. seems like a very random bug. you sure you changed mode of operation to automatic? ok then try this. after changing mode of operation to auto, go into settings and in mobile data options, change the setting that says evdo-only (forget the name) to hybrid. then wipe and flash diff rom.

By chance, (I can't find it on the sprint store or on the htc website) could you post the download link for the Sprint RUU?

[Fix] 3G Drops

This seems to be a pretty common problem lately: I've had it, and at least three others that I know of have had it. Luckily, there's a pretty simple fix.
Known Symptoms:
-Notification bar will say "3G," and appear to be connected, only to disappear (from the notification bar) after opening an internet-using application (at which point there will be no internet).
-Notification bar will only say "1X," and only 1X speeds.
-Settings --> Wireless & networks, mobile data will keep saying "turning on," without actually turning on.
Fix:
0. Disclaimer: You take responsibility for your own actions. The following is merely a replication of the steps that worked for me.
1. Do a nandroid.
2. Do a factory reset:
----Settings --> SD & phone storage --> Factory reset --> Reset phone.
----Phone will reboot, show a Clockworkmod-like screen, then reboot again.
If you have 3G, skip to Step 4, congratulations. If not, continue onto Step 2.
2. RUU. This will restore your phone to stock ROM, and wipe as much of the data as possible.
----Download: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=IH461NS4
----MD5: 784d7d55d987ed5afa7b10a30b402fb4
----Put PB31IMG.zip on the root of your SD card.
----BE SURE TO HAVE AT LEAST 50% BATTERY.
----Boot into bootloader (vol-down + power), wait a minute for it to load / unzip, and select yes to update.
----Phone will reboot again into bootloader, wait a minute for it to load / unzip, and then select yes to update, wait a minute or to for it to update, and then yes to reboot.
----Phone will now reboot into stock ROM. Go through the set-up.
If you have 3G, skip to Step 4, congratulations. If not, continue to Step 3.
3. Factory reset:
----Settings --> SD & phone storage --> Factory reset --> Reset phone.
----Phone will reboot, show a Clockworkmod-like screen, then reboot again into Setup-like screen.
----Follow prompts, eventually getting to "Activate" and follow directions.
If you have 3G, continue onto Step 4, congratulations. If not, please post info, and I'll try to help as best I can.
4. Read Notes.
Notes:
-Reroot with unrevoked.
-I'm not sure whether a nandroid restore will maintain the fix, but I think it will (not mess anything up).
-The problem seems to occur with something being corrupted outside of ROM files, so that's why different ROMs don't alleviate the problem.
---More specifically, the problem seems to be related to doing a *228 on an Evo ROM. Nothing's wrong with using a ported Evo ROM, just don't *228 it.
---Not saying a *228 is DIRECTLY the cause of it, but there definitely seems to be some correlation.
Please report back if this works! (Or if it doesn't...)

Hey guys I might have a fix for this 3g issue. I work at Verizon as a tech support rep and we have had a lot of issues with 3g drops on the eris and the incredible. What happens is that somehow the M.IP settings on the phone get cleared out. M.IP settings control your data services and therefore if blank you have no 3g and therefore have no data. What you need to do is to go in and insert the correct info to get the 3g back on. Heres what you do:
Dial ##778 then press call, next you will get an EPST screen with 2 options. Choose edit mode. Next it will ask for a password, here you will use 000000 (6 zeros) as the password. Now you will have a screen with different options. First go into the one that says Data Parameters. On the next screen it will say Package Dial String and it should have #777 as the number. If it is not there go ahead and type in #777. Now press back and you will return to the 1st menu again. This time choose M.IP Default Profile and on the next screen you will see a field called NAI. Make sure this field has you phone # followed by @vzw3g.com ex([email protected] If it is blank go ahead and input the information. After you do that, press the menu button and choose commit modifications. The phone will power off and back on and you should have 3g service again. Hope this helps you guys.

So I did a factory reset on my redemption ROM, but when I restarted it, it just brought me back to my homescreen with my accounts deleted.. and the problem still there. Do I need to totally wipe, flash a fresh redemption ROM, then when it prompts me for set up use wifi to get through, then factory reset?
why not just say, do a nandroid, wipe and restore nandroid.
My brother had the same issue using virtuous 3.1. What fixed it for him was changing kernels for what its worth...

None of this is working for me... Including the kernel... I also just reprogrammed my phone but that didnt fix anything either. I guess I'll try and flash skyraider again and the service pack or something..
Any other ideas?
*edit* - Formatted my sd card, got rid of everything, reinstalled Redemption and no go... gonna try skyraider again...
Hmm, I'm trying to think of what I did to fix my 3G, and I think I RUU'd, and then did a factory reset. That should be your best bet.
I'm also having these issues. What does "RUU'd" mean?
What is the point of the nandroid if you ruu and go back to stock anyways?

Well that's funny... CAUSE IT WORKED!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH gmichaelow!
Basically the deal seems to be in the factory reset. When you factory reset a RUU it deletes EVERYTHING which makes you need to reactivate your phone. When I reactivated my phone before, it didnt work because the corrupted files (im guessing) were still in tact...

Ahahahaa!! Yayyy!!! Lol, I'm so glad it worked! It was REALLLLLYYY frustrating for me, as there's no documentation to a solution to this problem. There are only reports of the problem, but no answer.
It was actually a Verizon rep who put me on to this, after telling me to "factory reset." But I was running CyanogenMod at the time, and the factory reset did nothing.
So I figured that I should RUU, I've tried everything else. RUU didn't fix it by itself. But then I remembered the Verizon rep... factory reset... and then that magic "3G" icon appeared! And stayed! =]
lol, anyways, glad I could help.

Ya the factory reset on Ruu must wipe the PRL data and stuff too which is why it makes you reprogram I think!

Yeah, it's definitely wiping something that ROMs aren't getting to. Probably the PRL, as no ROM I've ever flashed boots into that screen with an "Activate" button.
Me and my gf had 3G loss issues. After I did the RIL patch it did it less, but now it doesn't do it. So I've done nothing and my issues are fixed.

Yeup. when I tried this, I was desperate xD My 3G wasn't working! My smartphone was now an iTouch that could call! (Albeit with android xD)
I was having these problems as well, I did everything I could think of to fix it, RUU, 228, checkin, nothing worked. I ended up taking it in to a verizon store and they gave it a shot.
They ended up just sending me a replacement Incredible, and I haven't had any problems on this one yet.

These issues are only apparent when you flash leaks are custom roms.

flashed rom and now stuck on splash screen

I flashed my Alltel Desire with Gingervillian 1.0. When it finished it said it was successful, so I rebooted and now it's stuck on the Alltel splash screen. I tried wiping data/cache/dalvic and rebooting. Even taking out the battery and sd card. Nothing is working and I'm really pissed :/ It sucks going from an amazing Desire to an lg scoop, which is what I'm having to use now.
Any help?
Yes, I have searched the forum, but other people are using diff roms and having a few other problems. I just want to make sure I take the right advice!
Make sure the md5 of the download matches, then do another full wipe and reflash.
Ok thanks, but how do I do that? Lol
Ok I found the md5 of the download, but what do I match it too?
Ok, I found a md5 checksum checker and found out that the download did not match. I downloaded another one and now they match. Can I delete the old download off the sd card? Or what do I do?
yes, delete the old one. put the new one on your sd and flash again.
dont forget to do factory data wipe and clear dalvik cache.
you should be good (fingers crossed)
I done all of that and it's still stuck on splash screen I'm scared my phone is messed up for good.
Could I try flashing another ROM and if so how would I do that?
Isn't Alltel CDMA?
If you have a CDMA Desire you need CDMA Roms. I hope you did a backup before flashing this ROM. Try doing a nandroid restore to the ROM that came with your phone. If you want a ROM go look into cyanogen
Unfortunately there are not to many CDMA Roms. I would be happy to hook you up with a gingerbread ROM if you want!
No I didn't do a backup. So now I'm screwed? FML
Well thats not good.
You can get your phone functioning by flashing a CDMA ROM. But without a backup you can never get the phone back to the way it was given to you. So you cant ever take it back to alltel.
Here flash the first link on this page
http://mirror.teamdouche.net/?device=bravoc
"cm_bravoc_full-33.zip" that should get the phone working but you cant take it back to alltel
Make sure you clear data/cache all the jazz you did up there
But it will still be able to do everything right? Like download apps, text and all that? I just completely voided my warranty with no reverse? Is that what you are saying?
And also, how do I flash this "cm_bravoc_full-33.zip"? Do i delete the ginger villian ROM?
Ok thank you soooo much!! My phone is working now, but I'm still unsure about activating it again and using it. Will I be able too? And I'm looking and I don't see a market so I'm assuming I can't download apps? :/ that sucks but at least its working some sort of a way! I appreciate your help!
For CM you need to flash the google apps pack, it should be easy enough to find
Thanks, I'll be searching lol. Do you know if I it will be ok to activate this phone?
What do you mean by activate?
I activated my other phone because my HTC desire wasnt working. Do you think I can activate my desire back up? Also..the launcher Icon just dissapeared?? I swear I didn't delete it lol. Any way to get that back?
Ok, I found the google apps. Do I wipe all data/cache/dalvic first before i flash them?
No, you do not clear anything when flashing google apps. sorry for not replying (didn't see page 2)
Your phone will fully function as normal, for me MMS doesn't work but i have a small regional carrier with no support. You should be fine
As for activation, you are no longer on Alltel's software. Since you didn't do a backup I don't know what to tell you. If they can activate it without seeing it that would be best. My best advice is do more research next time.
You kind of got lucky on one front though. Out of all the carriers that the desire is on, Alltel is the one with a leaked RUU (completely restore your phone with those). If you want to go back to how you got the phone you can look into that. (if you want to do that don't talk to me i don't know much about that, make a new thread)
Well thanks! I got the apps installed and the phone on and working, but I can't activate it. So that sucks. So your saying I could go back to being on Alltel's network if I use the RUU? Becasue I will definitely do that ha. I just want to be able to use my Desire. I miss it ha!
If i were in your position, i would RUU. That doesn't mean you can't activate your phone now.
(To do that on my carrier its *228 don't know about you, give that a shot)
If the above doesn't work call Alltel and tell them to activate it. But once again if i were you i would:
1. Do the RUU back to alltel's software
2. Root and download ROM Manger
3. Do a nandroid backup of alltel's ROM
4. Then get to the fun stuff like custom roms
Thats just me. Let me ask you a question, can you activate phones without going into the store with alltel as your carrier?

[Q] Nonstop rebooting, even after full wipe/reinstall - last_kmsg inside

Hey everyone.
I know there's a couple other threads with this problem, but none of them included their last_kmsg files. It took a bunch of tries before I could stay booted up long enough to grab it, but I have one.
I'm getting a significant number of reboots on my EVO. Like almost unusable at times. It seems fairly random, although there's a slight suspicion is has something to do with the GPS. Maps has been a crash-cause before and the most recent bout last night was brought on by foursquare. (the annoying part is I had just used 4sq fine 30 minutes prior with no issues. Then, booted it up, refreshed locations and my phone was unusable for hours.)
I've done all the standard things. Fix permissions, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, wipe data/system, reinstall the latest CM7 build (update-cm-7.0.2.1-Supersonic-signed.zip), wipe cache, wipe dalvik. I entered my google account info but told it not to sync anything. It is now rebooting less than a minute after it starts up. I haven't installed any apps at all since this most recent wipe/reload of CM7. It reboots with and without the sd card installed.
I'm at a loss here and getting incredibly frustrated. Many replies say it's as easy to fix as wipe everything and re-do it. Obviously something abnormal is screwed up on my phone and I can't figure it out.
Here's the pastebin from this morning: pastebin.com/Ki7H8bH3 (Crap, I don't post here enough to be allowed to post links. Just add the http part to that.)
And then when I got awake enough, I did another complete wipe/reload. The rebooting is even worse now, it's taken me almost an hour to get to a point I can install es explorer to try and pull another file. And when I did, it was blank.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
1. Go to the link below and download the PC36IMG.zip file for amon RA v2.3 and place it on the root of your SD card.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026
2. Shutdown your device.
3. Simultaneously press the DOWN volume button and the power button until your device starts. There will be a short pause and then a few lines of text will scroll across the screen. Afterwards, the bootloader will automatically detect the PC36IMG.zip file and prompt you to install it. Follow the easy prompts to install. Installation will take less than 10 seconds to complete. Afterwards, reboot into your new recovery. Go to the backup/restore menu and make a nandroid backup of your current setup.
4. Now go to the wipe menu and wipe EVERYTHING in it EXCEPT the SD card.
5. Go to the flash menu and flash the rom you desire to flash.
On many occasions, reflashing the recovery solved rebooting issues and hopefully, it will solve yours.

Hi dougjamal,
Thanks for the reply.
I've made some progress. Last night I had done a majority of what you suggested, with installing amon RA. I've also just formatted my entire sd card just to be sure.
I haven't tried wiping things other than cache and dalvik, so I'll try that.
My progress I mentioned is that I had CM7 up and running until I flashed a new kernel and gapps in there. So I guess I'll just stick with the stock CM7 kernel, try your extra wiping and see how that works.
Thanks!

Ugh, it's the randomness of this that has me so frustrated. I thought I had a good install again, I left it sit on the "touch the android" screen for a few minutes and it stayed on. Made it through the setup process ok. I allowed the setup to "auto-download" a handful of the google apps it asks if you want. Once they got to about 38%... boom, restart.
So I did another toooootal wipe and I'll manually install those apps one by one. We'll see...

Don't rule out a corrupt download. If you have the time, download both Salvage-Mod 1.2.1 and the gapps zip from http://www.salvage-mod.com/node/4. If you like CM7, you may like Salvage-Mod. It is pure gingerbread. If you decide to flash it, see whether or not you get bootloops with it.

I re-downloaded CM7 this morning thinking that might be the issue, but it hasn't seemed to help. I'll give a different rom a try probably, maybe there's something other than CM7 I'd be content with.
Whelp, I downloaded SalvageMod and their gapps. Wiped everything, installed salvage, installed gapps, rebooted.
I got through set-up, was ok for a couple minutes, then as I was going into my contacts to see if they had sync'd yet... reboot.
This makes me think this can't be a ROM issue.
Any other ideas?
Does the same thing happen when you run a stock (or close-to-stock) rom? Main reason I ask is that this might actually be some sort of hardware problem, but one of the best ways to test for that is to be running on stock software. I wouldn't necessarily suggest flashing an RUU to get to the latest official release, but there are stock rooted roms out there that you could try.
You probably went with CM specifically to get away from Sense and the default HTC stuff (that's most people's reasons anyway), but if you flash a stock rom and it's still rebooting like that then I'd say chances are REALLY good that it's hardware and that you'd have grounds for getting a replacement phone (just remember to unroot first.)
And if it stops randomly rebooting on you then you'll have at least narrowed things down a bit.

Hey jesuspgt,
I haven't tried that yet. I'll look around for a rooted stock ROM later and give that a shot.
My current status is back to uncertainty. At the moment, my evo has been sitting here fine, not rebooting, for the past hour or two. It's still the Salvage ROM I first installed (i.e. I haven't reinstalled it since it rebooted). Now I haven't really used it any, so it might go to hell as soon as I do that, but for now, it's on and only had that one (maybe two, I can't keep track...) initial reboot.
That's what makes it tricky to diagnose. I know using any custom ROM runs the risk of loosing stability and all ROMs probably produce a reboot here and there. Tough to tell if it's just a "comes with the territory" type of reboot or an actual problem.
Even though I'm sure there's some CM features I'll miss, maybe Salvage is my answer.
Thanks!
*sigh* Well I decided to try using some apps and guess what... reboot.
All I was doing was trying to play a game of Androminion, which is about as basic and not-tasking as possible, so I can't imagine that's what crashed things.
The only thing I can think of that you *may* need to do is reflash your hboot and/or your baseband, PRI & NV from within recovery. You can download it from the link below.

Excellent, I'm going to try that. My hboot is still 0.93!
Hey dougjamal,
Just wanted to drop an update. I know how annoying it is to help someone out and never hear how things ended up!
Who knows what combo helped, but I'm fairly stable now. After updating my hboot, I flashed to Sprint Lovers, did the ##GPSCLRX# trick and then flashed to the latest nightly of CM7 (63 I believe). Only one or two crashes and one bootloop since then.
Of course, as luck would have it, a new problem showed up in the form of a dead spot on my touch screen. Right about where the "Clear" button is for notifications, that entire strip across the phone won't respond to touch. I was hoping it was a nightly issue, but I switched to a different rom and the issue was still there. Looks like it's going in for a warranty claim after-all!
Thanks for all your help

[Q] Flashed Rom now Sprint activation boot loop

i flashed synergy rom r14 after rooting the device initially and everything worked out fine, then kept getting the notification for the OTA for the 4.1.2 update...being that downloading OTA while rooted is a big no no (or always was before i came to the note) i decided to check synergy for updates to the rom and sure enough it was up to r47...so i downloaded and flashed and everything went smooth but after boot up it goes through the whole hand free activation and after saying the device is activated and then going through the PRL update and that checking out, it is supposed to do the soft reset and boot up and be good to go...well on second boot up it tries to activate the phone again (again saying Activation check and PRL update check) resulting in a boot loop that never stops....where did i go wrong...every phone ive had (touch pro 2, evo, evo 3d, nexus s) has always been a pretty straight forward root/flash process...so far this one seems to be a pain....any help?
Well clearly the problem wasn't worth the rooting process because you were able to flash Synergy w/o a problem. Hopefully you have a nandroid of stock rooted. I would pull the battery and try to restore your backup. Don't forget that for this phone Recovery access is via 3 buttons: power, home and volume (I forgot if it's up or down)

its up (down goes into odin) and sadly my stupidity and eagerness led me to not have a nandroid (yes feel free to leave the backlash, i deserve it), my question is...could it possibly be i a need to flash a different kernel? another idea i had was possibly calling sprint and seeing if the could walk me through the activation process (ive had them activate rooted phones before) i cant ever find the right button sequence (ie ##xxxxxx to get into the different menus) on the web
##72786# is the code you can use in a stock based rom with stock dialer that configures the data. It establishes a connection and then runs through that whole cycle you described in the OP. I'm kinda intoxicated so IDK if I answered your question or not

So right now you are unable to get a data connection on any rom you try? If that is the case you will probably want to look in the DEVELOPMENT section for a totally stock rom that you can ODIN.

Can someone help me? Phone keeps disconnecting (sms, call, 3/4G) rooted

SMS, Calls and Network seems to shut down after 5 mins of the phone being booted up. I have to 'restart' the phone in order to get everything back working. Then after around 5 mins everything (sms, calls, network) stops working. so basically every time i need to use my phone i have to restart it.
This has been happening for about a month now. Been through 4 different ROMs, tried different kernels and about 5 different radios (including Restore Modem Flashable Zip).
Oddly, last week, when traveling across state for 4 hours in a car, the network worked mostly. SMS i had to restart a few times.
What can I do to try and fix this?
I have dropped it a few times. small cracks but everything else works fine.
The problem started to occur the very 1st time I flashed a radio modem that a ROM dev suggested on his thread. Not sure if this was just a coincidence. Like i said I tried different radios with no luck.
Any tips?

I'm assuming you don't have a nandroid of your previous setup. First thing (before trying any of our solutions) is to make one of your current setup. This will allow you to at least go back to a semi-working setup (emphasis on semi-).
Obvious first question would be to ask Sprint if they're doing network upgrades in your area. It doesn't sound like this is the issue, but it might be.
Secondly: what is your install procedure when installing a new ROM? Are you doing "dirty flashses" or clean flashes (factory reset)? I don't have any solutions for you, but the fact that you're having this issue across ROMs and across Radios tells me that there's something left over in your /system that's messing with your data connectivity. If you try wiping system (or the entire internal sdcard) before installing a new ROM, you might find that this fixes your problem. I'll admit that's the extreme solution, but if it's not a hardware problem, it'll most-likely will work.

If I remember correctly, after the problem started happening I did restore a previous backup but the issue kept happening.
I never dirty flash and usually wipe data about 3 times before flashing a new rom.
So you are saying wipe/format the entire internal SD card? what would be the safest process to do this?
Thanks for helping
Honestly it sounds like a firmware/modem issue, not rom related. I would flash via odin the lj7 firmware and start there. Also make sure you do the dial reset sequence ##72786# once you boot up.

I have tried the LJ7 quite a few times but always using CWM -- never helped. Forgive me but what is "dial reset sequence ##72786# once you boot up" and how do you do it?

In the phone dialer dial that specific sequence it forces a reset activation on the network. Go ahead and try that, you can do that right now. But let me explain flashing the firmware and modem via Odin is a much better procedure that through custom recovery. I would give that a shot before continuing to bang your head trying to figure it out. If you odin your firmware and still have the problem then you can eliminate that as a probable cause.

I agree with edfunkycold, that's your best bet. Mine "solution" was more of a way to eliminate if any /system files were interfering with the network, but I'd suggest ed's fix first.
My "final" solution would be to try flashing Sextape's stock (rooted) tar file. I'd flash the "restore" version, the link looks like this:
SPH-L710_MD4_1130792_Rooted_Restore [EXE|TAR.MD5.GZ]

But again, that's more of a last-ditch thing. Try out the dial reset sequence the ed suggested.

Would flashing the "wipe data" version of the ROM clear out the /system/etc/firmware folder, and restore that to stock as well?
