[Q] HDMI Help - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys. I need some help with my phone. I'm running CM7 on my Evo and I'm trying to watch TV shows from my app "TV Shows" on my TV. It's a pretty cool app if you miss a lot of your favorite shows and have some catching up to do.
Well, I plug in the HDMI cable to my phone and my TV and my phone goes in a reboot loop. I downloaded an HDMI mirroring app but it hasn't done anything.
When I run the app, it tells me "no cable detected" so I plug in the cable and my phone freezes and goes into the reboot loop until I unplug the cable.
When I DO NOT use the app, it does the same thing, so I can't even go into my phone's gallery to look at pics on my TV.
Anyone know what I should do? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

dont know if this will help you to much, but what i know is that
1. you need a kernel that works well with the hdmi app you want to run, and
2. not all tv's accept cellphones hdmi, this happens to me on my living room tv, but not on my room tv, i've heard alot about this issue happening with certain tvs

The app says I don't need a new kernel so I'm guessing my TV won't accept it. Although I still can't use it, I appreciate you helping me. I got an answer, not the answer I wanted, but I got an answer, hahaha! Thank you.

Which app are you using? I used HDMwIn when I ran CM7, albeit with a custom kernel. It worked really well. All I can suggest is double checking the resolutions in your app settings. I know in HDMwIn the resolutions go to some monitor resolutions (640x480, 800x600 etc) and a lot of TVs will only do HD resolutions (1280x720, 1366x768 etc). The "bootloop" you're seeing might just be the HDMI handshake process.

I'm using the same app. What kernel should I use? I thought it said no custom kernel needed.

Yeah it says "no custom kernel" but you probably still do. Try using the tiamat dude. I would delete the hdmi app and reinstall it do when it starts up it will say "new v6 daemon ready to be downloaded". Download it then the app should work properly.
Here's the link to the 3.38 tiamat no sbc. Follow my instructions and hdmi should work. Delete the hdmi app, take this zip and flash in recovery as you would a rom, after you flash the kernel wipe dalvik-cache then reboot. Once the phone boots up you can adjust your performance settings in the cyanogen mod settings. Last thing to do is redownload the hdmi app and follow instructions. Good luck

No, it's definitely not that. The cable works. I thought that at first too, but a friend of mine tested it.
He also has an Evo with CM7. I don't know why it worked for him and not me, but I'm gonna flash the kernel and hopefully I'll be okay.

Do it!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, I've flashed the kernel and now I have video, but no audio. How can I fix this?

[Q] Is there a way to activate Bluetooth on the Kindle Fire?

In the iFixit teardown it says that there is actually a Bluetooth chip inside the Kindle Fire, though Amazon offers no support for it. Is there a way to activate it like with the Nook Color?
Here is the article (could not post the full link because I am new):
theverge.com/2011/11/16/2565949/kindle-fire-root-teardown-source-code
Thanks
The module on the KF has the required antenna switch front end to use the one antenna for both BT and WiFi. The only requirement left is that the high speed serial channel and the enable signal are wired up. Unfortunately the source doesn't give us any indication like on the Nook Color.
Maybe we need a half-dead Kindle for reverse engineering...

I'm a noob at this but if they took it apart couldn't they see if the high speed serial channel and the enable signal are wired up? And if they are, how would you activate the bluetooth?

That is exactly why I think getting a damaged Kindle for dissection would be beneficial. If the enable signal is wired up to a GPIO, then it's easy to add that to the kernel.

I don't think it would be easy to patch into stock, but with a build closer to AOSP it would be controlled through wireless settings like on any other platform.

So it would have to be through the Kindle Firmware or could we develop an app for the Kindle Fire that could enable the Bluetooth?

So would this app have to be specifically made for the KFire? Or can I just get a Bluetooth On/Off Widget from the Market?

No that won't work, because the kernel doesn't support bluetooth. Basically those sorts of apps will tell the kernel "turn on bluetooth" or "turn off bluetooth" and the kernel will do it (that's my understanding at least). So support would have to be added to the kernel (i.e. needs to be a custom kernel)

Can be compiled.as a module, can't it? I doubt though that the fire has all the other bluetooth stuff built in (I haven't looked, but they would be in /system/etc/bluetooth if it did.)
Of course it's all moot if the hardeware isn't wired for it... if it is, great... if it's not, somebody has to figure that out first.

Cost is the about the biggest reason I can think of. They spent a lot of dev time doing what they did, so enabling it software-wise probably would have been easy enough for them to do.
Doing the extra.bits in the hardware.side might have been easy, and.might.not have increased.the cost.dramatically, but aren't they losing money on the hardware.already?
And wow, I really need to change out this keyboard, heh.

[MOD]webcam as fully functional rear cam!

EDIT: sorry for the jittery video new one on its way! and added another link just to amuse you
hey guys!
today i was really curious as to how i could get a webcam to fully function, and to maybe permanently use one as a web cam. after hours of surfing, i found that their is a way to preview, but not to actually use one. so i wanted to fix this problem!
after hours of research, and a bit of testing, and have finally reached some success!
found a thread in the viewsonic g tablet section, that managed to do about the the same. since they were both tegra based, with similar enough soc's , i decided to experiment. with stock kernel and firmwares, the nexus 7 has drivers for plug and play webcams. what this mod does is gives permissions and makes the webcam show up as a rear camera feed. WITH THIS MOD ACTIVE YOU CANNOT USE YOUR FRONT CAM.
it was made for the g tab. if modifications are made, we may be able to bring it back.
WARNING: as usual, i am not responsible for any mishaps that may happen by you doing this mod, including nuclear monkeys taking over the world.
i am coating the writer at the g tab thread for the credits on who originaly made the base for this mod for the gtab : "Credit BELONGS to Borkata at "another site""
so first, u will need:
1. a UVC webcam. or simply, a plug and play camera. anything that didnt need anything extra to work, other than you plugging it in. some only need the extra cd to use its full potential, but may work without one. check here: http://www.ideasonboard.org/uvc/#devices
95% of webcams should work.
2. the attached file. (camera.tegra3.so)
3. nexus 7
4.OTG CABLE!
5.a camera app other than stock. (lgcamera or similar)
STEPS!
EXTRACT and COPY the camera.tegra3.so FILE INTO your tablet's /SYSTEM/LIB/HW folder, and reboot. BACK UP THE ORIGINAL camera.tegra3.so if u want to revert later.
plug in your camera.
open up terminal emulator. run this:
su
chown system.camera /dev/video0
chmod 660 /dev/video0
now go to your camera app and check it out!
taking pics works fine. video has bad fps though. response is a bit slow too. but i think these are software issues.
you will need to put those lines in the terminal everytime you plug in the camera. (or make some kind of a script, or ask someone to)
i am not improving this mod simply because i dont have the experience to. but i did want to share this with you.
here is a little demo i uploaded of it so u guys can get an idea of it-

Could mean a few things. Either USB otg not working, or the tablet doesn't recognize the web cam as a webcam because it doesn't support plug and play, or incompatible ROM or kernel. Most probably the webcam's fault.

Video Player Sleep Fix - DMC3 Base

I took lots of video at my Nephews Bday party during weekend finding long charge times though out the week.,,,,like 4.5 hours to full charge.
I did some searching around leading me to Video Player being the culprit
Some explanation:
When device is put on charger Stock Video Player becomes active Transcoding is constantly running video thumbnails in background cranking up cpu.
If you have large video files , movies etc app is working harder and with that comes slow slow charge.
For the fix I made edit to TranscodeReceiver.smali applying return-void to (const-string v1, "android.intent.action.ACTION_POWER_CONNECTED")
With this modification app sleeps until you wake it.
How to Install:
No need the clear cache.
Make back up.

Right on well it has nothing to do with his rom......Its the Sammy Video Player, apk , sometimes it plays nice & sometimes not cycling stored video when charging.
Ive come across long charge days in the past but never really caught my attention until hours of video was stored on device.
4.5 hour charge was a wake up call for me . Why in the heck Sammy has Video player run in background when charging device is beyond me....pretty stupid on their part really.
S3 owners have been dealing with this issue for sometime reporting bad results , long charge time & bricked device due to overheat when charging.
Luckily are device is rock solid no major overheat issues reported so were safe on that front.
As far as ICSP The current base is same as CR4.9 so all is good.
I do plan on updating theme but pretty busy building rom for it now.
Like to report that I installed this mod and it has changed my charging times dramatically. My charging times have been very slow since installing CR4.9 and now after the install my charging time is faster than it has ever been. Big thanks to sling for his mod! :good:

freeze it? If you mean disabling app that's not possible.
If you stop app in running apps it will restart when charging.
You could rename app using root explorer....something like VideoPlayer.apk.NA
Such edit will make app absent.
Best bet install OP version & install secondary app from playstore if wanted

From my understanding, the videos are being transcribed so that there are animated GIFs that play in the "Thumbnail" pane. If all videos are transcribed to their respective GIFs, wouldn't the long charge time go away?

That's too bad. I'm using a ROM that I think has Xposed as part of the ROM, so it doesn't let me uninstall it. I would really love to get the optimum app working though. Maybe i'll back this ROM up and test it on my stock ROM I have saved.

just get into the xposed app and choose uninstall xposed from the xposed interface itself. then test and see if that lets optimum work
So it's Xposed causing the problem. I wondered why it works on my Note 10.1 and Nexus 7 but my Note 3 just keeps trying to load it. I can live with that. My Note 10 is much better suited for it anyway.

I am wondering if anyone can get rid of the "HDMI Detection" for the Spectrum/ Charter Cable App from PlayStore. I'd like to use it on my Firetv box so that my kids can watch cable in their room since I can't afford to pay for another cable box.. I would greatly appreciate the help. Below is a link to the app from my Dropbox. Thank you.

Thank you but I'm looking for Spectrum TV (Charter Cable) app that works or if someone can modify the app to get rid of the "HDMI DETECTION".

ahh, well im working on moving the edits to Spectrum as I also will want this.
Edit: give this a go, latest Spectrum app. Tested and installs fine, but I can't test the edits as I don't have a Fire Stick.

The app you referred me to, installs but when I click on it, it force closes immediately. I posted a link to a modded one I found here somewhere, which partially works. Maybe that one can help you.

Yes. ADB detection, network state, root, and HDMI mods are all working fine.

I know..
However, If I can get HDMI, can worry about other MODs later, because isn't the HDMI thing the issue? (why we can't just install from playstore)

Bet you'll be heavily contributing to the FTV(S) sceen. Welcome aboard.
After your done playing with the Spectrum App. If you get bored or have some time. Maybe you can take a look at the ATT UVerse apps (FireTV & PlayStore) to see if they can be modded. Specially to bypass the root check.
I can quickly test any mod you send/post. PM me any time.
Here are some mods that might help on Spectrum & other apps too:

Thank you my friend! With TWC switching to Spectrum, am losing channels left and right, and now a set top box is needed on every TV.. No thanks, I was happy with my 2-71 channels with just a direct cable, so the FireStick was something I wanted anyway, so I decided to pull the trigger on it, to quickly find out the app is supported :silly::laugh:
Hopefully myself or someone else can get this sorted out as it's a great MOD that was created and I hope I can revive it. There is so much info though, and just making the ones today took hours, but the confusion is that I am making literally the same edits as the app that is linked here into the new app but yet it just isn't taking, so maybe some new checks are in place, but I couldn't find them. But with a device for myself to test will save some good time, and it's always a good learning experience.
I know how it goes. To me the process or learning experience can be even more fun or rewarding then even a positive outcome. Gotta enjoy the road. Not just the destination. I've been in the FTV(S) sceen for over two years. And it's been a blast. Hope you enjoy it as much as I have. As much fun as it's been. This relatively cheap devices really solved a ton of content access problems too.
