cm7 weather doesn't work - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

is anyone using CM7 having a problem with "news & weather"? my phone doesn't seem able to acquire my location to update the weather. whenever i refresh the weather, it'll say "acquiring location"...then "loading..." and then it says "no weather location available". i am also using an app called "minimalistic text" to display the weather on a widget and it can't seem to acquire a location to display either...anyone know what's going on here? if i specify a city (i.e., a "custom location"), then it will display the weather...otherwise it doesn't. my gps is working fine as well so i'm not sure why it can't seem to detect my location for the weather
any help would be appreciated! thanks!

I'm not having any issues with it. You have you location set?
Its working for me on nightly 40, just switched to 51 and still working.
Also using the minimalistic text widget, and it has my location and weather as well. Do you have it set in settings to acquire location by mobile
data, otherwise you'll have to have gps on.

no i don't have the location set. if i have it set to a specific location, then it works. if i want it to update depending on which city i'm in, then it doesn't work and says "no weather location available..."
back when i had the sense stock, i didn't have to have gps on..and every few hours, the weather would update on its own depending on which city i was in...

News and weather settings: [only what I have checked]
weather: use my location
No special settings under minimalist. Hit globals settings, and try checking define location. Mine isn't checked, but it still picks up my location.

yea currently i have "define location" checked...but then it makes me specify a location...so i did...and it works. but if i leave it unchecked, it doesn't pick up my location...and this is precisely the problem...cuz i want it to update depending on where i am...vs. specifying only one location...
weird that i seem to be the only one with this problem..cuz i didn't find anyone else with posts regarding this matter

Awkward. In location and security under settings, do you have use wirelessn networks checked?

I wonder if "The GPS Fix" would be relevant here?

Yes, because that allows the data to pull your location based off your 3G, and that should allow it to update automatically based on your location.

Weather widget and current location

Hi,
My weather widget shows my country as current location and not my town. Does anyone know how this current location thing exaclty work and how can I correct my problem. I can add my city manualy without any problems at all. Location tracking is turned on. But this damn widget still shows country and not the town I know that I can remove widget and add it again and select my town, but I want dynamic thing (current location). Tried weatherbug and it detects my location without any problems. Help and thanks.
My advice.. dont bother with the weather widget, all it does is tell you what you can find out by looking out the window.

I had the same problem here (Ireland). It just listed my country as the current location. I decided to try a different weather app called snow storm. BUT... After I tried out this app I realised (coincidence?) that my current location started working in the standard weather app!!! It shows the area Im in now (or closest big town, usually correct within 2km). Im in Dublin and it shows all the different regions of the city as I drive around I don't know what caused it to suddenly work but it does now. When it started working it was on and off for a day to two. If I refreshed the weatehr sometimes it would jump back to Ireland(current) and if I refreshed again 2 or 3 times it would jump to Stillorgan(current). i.e. the local area. Now it does not jump to country at all and always lists the current area. No idea how it started working though. no updates etc. try refreshing the weather 4 or 5 times in a row and see if it still says your country and not your town? Actually, my mobile operator (O2) started selling the phone around about the time it started working?! maybe its linked to that?
I tried to install application you've mentioned, tried to refresh 6 times weather app - no change at all Tried to delete location and weather data - still no change It would be very interesting to know how this location thing deas exactly work at all. Because and world clock app shows my location as Lithuania and not my town which is capital of Lithuania:/ And one more thing - Vilnius is not mentioned in available timezones list when Dublin is there. Maybe this all thing is because of that?
That is strange. I would expect Vilnius to be there. I would expect the capital city of all EU countries to be there. I can only think it must somehow be network related. The phone naturally gets this location information from your network somehow. If the network do not provide this information to the phone in a certain way maybe it cannot deduce your location? the fact that mine works now and DID NOT work for 3 weeks when I first got the phone (I even have a post about this) I think it must be network. I changed nothing else with the phone and its perfect now. Does your network sell the HTC Desire? Do they plan to sell it? I think when they do, your location will start working.
Problem is that one guy I know has HTC legend and he is in the same network I am and his legend shows Vilnius without any single problem:/ It still would be very interesting to know how the phone detects location - does it use some kind of cell info, does it use internet. Because if I want location services to work I must turn on mobile network. And when location services are turned off my current location is Minsk I think because it is in the same time zone as I am and because it is in the database. Can you look at your phone's timezones? Are you able to see Vilnius in there?
I wish too the weather widget could give a forecast. Looks great but not exactly practical. Shame.
I had exactly the same problem as you, the weather app showed my country and not the town was in. But somehow it managed to jump to the city (in Sweden) I was currently staying in, but now when I´m 300km away it still shows the same town.
I don't think there´s anything wrong with the network because the widget called Latitude shows updates very frequently and tells me where I am even in very small towns.
I think it has to do with
Menu -> Settings -> Location -> USE GPS satellites... I think, not sure
Edit: Confirmed.
I had update disabled (i update the widget manually) and from the previous update it got stuck at my country (Macedonia).
I ticked the previously mentioned option, enabled the internet, chose to update the weather, and it located my exact region.

That's really obvious my friend! It´s like "Try restarting it" =)
Nah I know how to fix it, it worked for me.
Remove it from the home screen, then when you reattach it the widget (Clock as it's called) will ask you to choose a city and just simply pick "Current location" from the list. Remember to go to the weather app and update if the weather is not visible in the widget.

Nanchang?
Hi guys
I didn't want to create a new thread as I'm having similar problems to the OP.
Since yesterday, the current location and time on my home screen time/weather widget (the one with the flip clock and weather) shows that I'm in Nanchang, with the weather to suit (cos it certainly isn't 27 degrees celsius at 22:16 here in Leeds, West Yorkshire!).
I installed Gameboid last night, and a couple of games (roms); also NewsRoom, and installed Who Wants To Be A Millionaire 2010
I removed Radiant, and Toss It games to free up some space
I have tried selecting Leeds as the City when adding the clock widget, which is fine as it shows me the correct time and weather on the widget/home screen. However, the time on the taskbar at the top still shows as 22.23 (at moment of typing this), which is the time in Nanchang.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Mo
It's ok guys. Seems to have been a glitch with network whilst I was at work cos as soon as I left Morley (Leeds), phone automatically straightened itself out. Weird. But I'm happy.

I don't think you're doing anything wrong -- sometimes My Location just gets confused by the answer it gets (from cell-tower triangulation).
I don't know the explanation...but I sometimes get way-off wacky results from My Location Weather, too. In certain places in eastern Oregon, My Location says I'm Anchorage, Alaska -- about 1700 miles off!
Usually it works correctly, though.

Its always ALWAYS helpfull if you post what it is you are running on your phone (stock or custom rom). radio, carrier etc etc so we can actually help you.
Do you even have a version of of sense (manila whatever you want to call it) that has location based weather? The newest versions of sense 2.1 and 2.5 have them but the older stock versions don't, thats why I ask.
Pretty easy to tell. When you are on your home screen do you have the current weather icon under your clock with the location and temperature? I'm sure you've seen this before if not just look up a sense 2.5 picture and you'll see what I'm talking about. With all of the cities taken away in your weather tab do you have something on the screen that says "my location"? If you don't then you don't have a rom that has the ability to show your current locations weather. If you do and its not updating go into your settings and see when you have it set to update? It may not even be checked and that may be your issue. Check it and set it to update however often you'd like.
If none of that helps then I have NO idea
Good luck!

[Q] Google Now Traffic - Commute to work never shows up

Hi all,
I have been using Google Now Traffic for about 2 months or so?
It never NEVER and I mean NEVER showed my commute to work card.
Even when I'm to work, it shows me the commute to home card. So it's always the commute to home card showing up and a couple of other places I added after being asked by Google Now if I wanted those places to be reported.
WiFi, Mobile,Location Access, GPS are all enabled at all times, but NOTHING.
What to do?
Thanks

Yes, ofcourse.
And when I check to location history for the past days it shows me that I was at 'Work' during the day, for example.
But the traffic card will not work whatsoever.
So, nobody can help me with this?
Maybe Google thinks you're unemployed. Has it given you any links to monster.com?

Do you work at the same time every day? The only workaround I can recommend is to add a work "event" to your calendar and then it will show you the time and traffic to that event.
Also, check your privacy settings and make sure you're sharing all of your information with google.
Isn't there a manual way to produce a commute to work card? I do have my work schedule in my calendar. For location should I say "work" or Tufts University" or do I need to input the actual address? I have set up "work" location in google maps but I do not have a "regular" schedule.
did you check that the "traffic" notification is checked "when you travel FROM home" as well as "When you travel TO home" ?
It looks like you have only the second check active.
(I'm sorry, but I don't know the exact english phrase, non english language here)

Have you found solution, about temperature?
I tried to use it but getting always that its trying update temperature, but dont show location until i turn gps and wifi/3g on? How to make it update temperature automatically, because now it's update only then i go to themer setting - > weather
Having same problem, I'm in England and the temp is showing 25C haha. Seriously it's annoying and I cant find a solution. It's not working.
is there a way to add other weather providers?

I'm having this issue as well. It says it 77 deg F....in Chicago. It's been getting it wrong for about a week now which is frustrating. I'm not going to keep using it for weather at this point which sucks because I bought the full version of Zooper. :crying:
I've been having this problem ever since I started using Zooper. Like Jed, the temperature is so far off, I don't think there's anywhere in the country right now that's actually that warm. We're talking 40+ degrees difference. Of the three providers, two of them have roughly the same information... which leads me to believe it's a location issue, as if Zooper is reporting to the weather servers that I'm some hundreds, or thousands, of miles from where I actually am. I've switched to Yahoo for now, as it seems at least somewhat close, but if past problems are any indication, it will eventually go out of whack and I'll switch back to one of the others, and that one will be somewhat accurate for a month or so.
Try checking the "Alternative Geocoder" option under "Global Preferences->Advanced". It seemed to fix it for me.
I actually fixed it by manually entering my location for each widget that required it. It works if you don't travel that much.

I tried both options and it is still not working.
The widget says 28 degrees Celsius but is actually 11 degrees Celsius.
The Alternative Geocoder did not worked for me as well so I changed the weather provider and picked Yr.no. I guess you have to install that one before. Now the weather is accurate for my small town in France
Continuing problems with inaccurate weather
Any fixes in sight? Regardless of which of the 3 weather providers I choose, I'm getting temp readings that are 10-15 degrees off. My location is being accurately detected. I'm hoping that someone knows of a way to increase the accuracy of the weather info provided. Otherwise, love the app!
Ya anyway to add others weather provider.
The 3 bundle weather is completely not accurate. Now is heavy hot but it show raining to me.
Try the advanced Menu - > Debug Info -> Current Weather from Open Weather Map?
And check Open weather on Weather Menu.
That should fix the problem.

I'm having issues now with my weather info (only question marks or "Unknown") and icons (only a placeholder) not showing/updating. I'd like to try this fix but I couldn't find "Debug Info" in Zooper. Can you guide me as to how to get to the Debug Info menu? TIA
cant believe its been 2 years and this issue is still in the app.
i tried alternate geocoder, tried the 3 weather providers....
even tried selecting my location manually
i still get 10degrees difference sometimes.. i have the yahoo app and it shows the correct temp.. but zooper doesnt.
i regret paying for this app.. dont recommend it

Lineage 17 GPS question

Unlike many modern versions of Android, I can find no three-tiered setting for GPS accuracy. I'm looking to set it to "Device Only" but it's either off or on, with a few additional location options but nothing more for GPS.
I'm using lineage 17, the second to last update, on a Samsung Tab 4 and I just want to restrict the device to the system GPS app GPS I've set (but it keeps drifting).

Yes, Gapps installed and working well (version for Android 10, nano),but I'm not sure google settings would change what would be in the device system settings. I guess I'm just looking for some way to force that missing setting without having to resort to tin foil around the device.

I'm not tin-foil-hat-concerned with Google knowing my location; I'm referring to the systemized GPS app I installed to be able to determine the location I set. Which it can currently, and can usually continue to do when I can set the device to take GPS from "device only". In this case it shows me on the map "rubberbanding" between my actual location and the location I've set about 100 feet away. This is because the OS is allowing the device to try and locate its own location.

Oh, location spoofing
https://f-droid.org/app/com.wesaphzt.privatelocation
GPS drains battery
With previous (before 17) it was possible to set the location service to be switched on, but only use cell data.
When I use the gps device it drains my battery much faster.
Therefore: How can I leave the location service on, but DO NOT USE the gps device in LOS 17 ????
Thanks in advance

Do you try to spoof your location? And why? What location providers do you have? GApps?
I guess your reply refers to my question.
Maybe I was not clear.
With former LOS versions I was able to explicitly choose whether to use the (battery draining) gps receiver for my location or not.
I have several other sources of location information (gsm cell based and wifi based) usually with less accuracy. But I may prefer theses under certain circumstances because of less power consumption. I Don't use google but microg.

No. I am not trying to spoof anything. I have an automation program called Tasker on my S4. When I was on stock Samsung ROM (5.0.1), I was able to use the "location mode" in Tasker to switch between high accuracy and battery save. If Tasker detected I was running Google Maps, it switched on high accuracy. If not, it switched over to battery save. From what I can tell, high accuracy used GPS + network and battery save used network only.
Now, I'm on LOS 17.1 and battery save would turn on GPS too. It seems the only way to not use GPS is to turn off location mode altogether. This makes me wonder what the differences are between Device Only and Battery Save modes. Since I cannot tell, I am assuming both modes are provided for backward compatibility to Tasker users but the underlining Android 10 doesn't differentiate them.
I am suspecting with Android 10, there are only 3 modes.
* GPS + network
* GPS
* OFF
Thus, if one needs the location service, GPS must be used.
I raised this question elsewhere. Some people actually told me that GPS doesn't consume much power if it's just turned on but not being used, e.g. by Google Maps. I have no way to verify if they are right.

Network location is not part of lineageOS. You can add it with GApps or microG. Have you?
Enabling location does not power the satellite receivers continuously. It really needs battery. The job of your tasker script is done by android 10 automatically. If you suspected apps to drain battery with GPS, disable their location permission!

The reason I preferred to keep it on battery save instead of off completely in the old days was that if I ever lost my phone, I wanted to be able to track it. Now with Android 10's mandatory GPS for location service, if I want to disable abusive apps from requesting unnecessary location service, which app should I avoid disabling? Which app is giving out my phone's location if I am tracking it remotely?
Thank you

I still see one drawback with very selectively granting apps location service. For example, I do want to grant Chrome location service to facilitate better search. If I'm indoor, wouldn't GPS without a clear view of the sky trying very hard to get a fix and thus burn more power than necessary? With that said, can High Accuracy (GPS + network) actually be more power efficient under Android 10 than Battery Save (GPS only)? This is assuming Chrome would give up on GPS when it can't get a fix and be happy with just network while Battery Save would keep trying to get a fix with GPS. Again, this is just my assumption.
