[Q] What are pros and cons CM7 vs Virtuous? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm using Virtuous 1.0.2 ROM, what about CM7. Could any body describe closer its pros and cons? What are benefits using CM7, what do you like and appreciate in this ROM?
I am asking in case maybe I would like to play with this ROM, however I like weather/clock widget and sense.
Is there any special feature in CM7 which magnetize you?
Thanks a lot in advance for sharing your feelings and concerns.

Sense vs no sense. Its a matter of personal choice. Also if you just like the weather app you can download beautiful widgets. It looks very similar, but if your like me it still just not the same.

Also cyanogenmod is a bit faster than sense roms.
Sent from my G2 running Cyanogenmod 7.

If I'm not mistaken Virtuous is also Froyo Based, CM7 is Gingerbread based.
It really is a matter of preference tho, Sense vs No Sense.
I'm partial to CM7 myself, based largely in part that its a tad more stable and faster, with better performance and battery consumption. But some people must have Sense, and if that is you, then you should highly consider Virtuous. If you don't care about Sense, then i would highly recommend CM7.

What is hands down the BEST sense ROM

So here's my question- I love Cyanogen but haven't really given sense a shot. I went from Eris to D1 to Fascinate to Droid X to Inc. I really like the Inc so much more than all the others but wanted to try and do it right the first time. What Sense ROM are you all using that yields the most stability/battery life/features? Kernel advice? Thanks in advance.
I like stock sense so I use virtuous but as far as kernels right now Chad has the best kernels and there easy to find in the development section.
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
I use the stock 2.2 leaked ROM from August (rooted).
All it's missing is full bluetooth features for BT mouse and keyboards.
I have tried many.
Myn's Warm Two Point Two rls4 is currently on my phone.
This is the best ROM out now in my eyes. I like sense, but I am not to big a fan of plain vanilla android, so I don't really use anything like Cyanogen. Maybe if Koush makes a vanilla gingerbread ROM I would use that, but for now I like sense 2.2
Warm Two Point Two has been on my phone the longest compared to any other ROM.
*Have had barely any FC's at all. I can't even think of the last time it happened.
*Fast
*Looks sweet as default without theme.
Using Kernel included with ROM and 2.15.00.11.19 radio
1348 score in Quadrant
38MFLOPS in Linpack
Stability - Virtuous, Uncommon Sense and Redemption. They have all been around and are tried and true. If I am not mistaken, Myn's Warm 2.2 is an Evo based rom and oyu can customize it (I have not flashed it). I am running Redemptive, it is an Evo/Inc hybrid, there are a number of good themes out there and Lou has also released a "senseless" version. Lots of great options.
As far as kernals go, they interact differently with each Rom. Chad is doing some great work as well as Lou. On Battery life... it is so subjective, I don't know why anyone talks about it. I have a stock battery and get 6-8 hours out of it regardless of the Rom or Kernal. I am just glad that it charges fast again (about 1% every minute and a half).
Warm TwoPointTwo with the kernel included with it. Stable, fast, and passable battery life (still gonna buy a 1750mAh battery though)
I use Desire Z. Epic speed and epic benchmarks. Some bugs.
+1 for Myn's Warm Two Point Two rls4
Smooth, clean, and stable. Best Incredible ROM I've tried hands down.
If you're looking for more enhancements/features to a sense rom, I highly recommend Skyraider Sense. In addition to having the up-to-date sense framework, extra goodies are included such as the power control toggles in the drop-down notification bar. Other nice additions like the gingerbread keyboard baked into the rom is convienient as well. I've been running the latest Skyraider Sense for a while now and it has been rock steady achieving uptimes up to 166 hours before having to reboot to flash something.
Skyraider is basically Stock Sense +, with the + indicating some additional goodies without veering too far away from the stock experience.
As for a kernel, I have one that's been my tried-and-true for months now. That is adrynalyne's undervolted. Fantastic battery life when paired with setcpu (as it was designed to play nice with it) and great stability. The only problem with it is that it only uses the conservative governer well, so if you really like ondemand or interactive you may want to look elsewhere. Despite this, it runs perfectly fine for me. The only percieved difference is in the quadrant score, which ultimately means not so much.
Sent from my Droid Incredible using the XDA app.
I absolutely Loved loved loved Lou's Redemptive Revolution with the stock .17 kernel. That ROM is lightning fast and I could easily score 30+ hours of battery life with a 1750 mAH battery from Seido and Juice Defender/Set CPU Profiles.
Right now I'm just screwing with CM6.1 because I basically have Android ADD. I flash a new ROM nearly every week it seems.
EDIT: making this post kind of gave me the urge to flash a new ROM. I'm thinking about using his Senseless Redemptive Revolution, because I really dig Launcher Pro, plus I paid for it so I might as well use it.
SkyRaider is almost 100% stock sense and I have 0 problems with it. Smooth, fast, and the Dev is very responsive to everyone's questions.
Myn's Warm 2.2 easily.

I put my vote in for Virtuous. I am currently running v3.2 rom with the virtuous custom kernel v3. It runs smooth and I have never had a single problem or issue. As far as i've seen everything works and it is a huge improovement in battery life compared to stock when combined with setcpu and advanced task killer froyo.

I agree that Virtuous 3.2 (and 3.1 before it) are closest to the pure Sense experience, at least on the Incredible. It's also easy to install (no wipe required) and easy to mod. I've switched a few notification bar icons and the lock screen without a problem. The custom kernel #3 that comes with 3.2 handles battery life nicely, too.
A few comments:
1. There is a reason there are 5 desire Z based inc roms out there - 4 in the last 2 weeks or so. New sense beats the pants out of old sense roms both in terms of speed and functionality. There might be some bugs but the overall experience is radically superior. Try one out for a few days. You will like them.
2. MIUI is probably the most beautiful of the AOSP Roms - you must have that in your roms to try list. Its AOSP but really pretty
I have tried all the regular older sense roms too but these are what I have gravitated to.
I appreciate everyones feedback. I've just decided to keep it aosp. I like the lightness and quickness of it all. As far as miui goes- seems kinda like running an iPhone theme. I don't want an iPhone. Also- app management seems retarded. No drawer?

Its personal preferences I guess. Coming from am iphone, I found the concept of just one app drawer wherein all apps are arranged only alphabetically very odd and confusing. Miui attracted me because I finally saw some easy way to organize them by type. Plus I always hated having only 7 home screens to work with. I ended up with 9 in miui because I love widgets for news, email, messages, facebook, twitter etc. and with the folders and so many widgets, I needed more screens... For me, widgets is one of android's big advantages over the iphone. and I need more screens for more widgets!

Running Laucher Pro, should I ditch HTC Sense?

Ever since I found Launcher Pro I've never used anything else.
I'm running SkyRaider 3.5 (which is HTC Sense) and I'm wondering if I should go to an AOSP ROM like CM7.
I'm wondering:
> Will it be faster than current setup?
> Will it be better on battery than current setup?
Let me know, thanks.
Battery and speed will improve depending on which kernal you use. The main advantage to using a AOSP ROM for me was better bluetooth support. I can't use wii controlers with my emulators using Sense but I can if I use a non-Sense ROM like CM6 or CM7. Shows you what I look for in a ROM doesn't it.
Doesn't Skyraider offer a senseless version of the Skyraider ROM?

Speed will depend, more likely than not it will be a bit speedier and better on battery IMO. I have been running CM7 with the Savaged-Zen kernel and i got over a day and a half out of it, that with setcpu at 128/1113 with smartass governor.
I used to stick with Sense based ROMS because they where just so smooth and stable, but now im with AOSP ROMS like CM7 and a few others. I use launcher pro and its awesome. The customization of AOSP ROMS are pretty much endless, and they give you a cleaned up Android. Id give it a try, just make a back up of SkyRaider then download the latest CM7 RC.
@OP
I was in your shoes about a week after using the phone after I bought it.
Went AOSP and haven't gone back except for the occasional, lets see if somehow the grass somehow decided to paint itself greener and became super plants.
I recommend AOSP completely. It's alot more of a streamlined android experience, and IMO lets you really customize the OS to work for you, rather than having to work with sense.
Not saying sense is bad or anything, it's my favorite non stock rom, but AOSP is just above and beyond for me.
Although incredibly re-engineered had me off AOSP for about 3 days before switching back

Senseless is still Sense framework, which lacks the advantages of a true AOSP ROM. The advantage to Senseless is a vanilla interface, but the stability of the Sense framework.
Thanks for the input!
Will be switching to an ASOP ROM sometime tonight.
For me unfortunately, the lack of decent widgets keeps forcing me back to the new desire z based sense roms. Too many additional features in sense. Wish there were good equivalent aosp widgets for what you can get from htc in the hd/z/mt4g/inc s roms...

I don't know if you wanna jump in head first or not but, I'm really enjoying the new Cyanogenmod 7 RC1 right now. Another great is MIUI. They're both great on battery life and they're both highly customizable. But they are a big change from sense- especially MIUI. And, obviously, CM7 is a release candidate so it isn't perfect (although damn close.) Whether you jump on them now or later, once you've gotten your feet wet, you should check em both out some time.

That's false. I have never gotten the battery life from an AOSP rom that I have from an optimized Sense rom. I've used almost every kernel for both types of roms. There are quite a few people that actually complain about CM battery life. As far as speed its like the butt dyno, just saying your phone feels faster is all perception. There are people that say the optimized Sense roms are the fastest and some say the AOSP are the fastest. Try what you like and use it. The real differences is in the interface. Bluetooth is definitely better supported on CM.
I found my best battery life AND speed were with Ruby ROM 2.0.2 with Launcherpro. Cyanogenmod 6 is good too but had tons of features I didn't use. Invisiblek kernels are a great addition to AOSP ROMs.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I've been running MIUI 1.1.26 with invisablek #28 for a while now, w/o setcpu and while I wouldn't say it's the fastest combo (not that it's slow) its is the most stable my phone has been since I switched from Virtuos using stock kernel.
After setting up invisablek #28 and wiping battery stats it did take a few days of crappy battery life until it started to kick butt. I can get thru a 10 hour work day of moderate web surfing and constant music playing and still have at least 20% battery left. And if I run with the 2150mah extended battery forget about it.
I would definately recommend giving MIUI and invisablek #28 kernel a try. It has the faster charging the stock kernel has and runs smooth and stable. The launched takes a bit to get used to but you can always run launcher pro over it. Tried that but I love the MIUI launched too much.
Thats my issue with the CM line, it has tons of features I dont use (which could be flashable) and includes way too many localizations. I must admit I forgot about Ruby, it was the best in terms of speed. No lag, no hesitation, smooth as butter.
Launcher Pro doesn't extend any battery life on any ROM I have used it just a different launcher but one of the best ones I have used so far.
If you aren't attached to the Sense experience, the don't even hesitate to try out different ROMs. I gave up on Sense after a month of purchasing the Dinc, tried out CM6, tried out MIUI, and now I've been "crackflashing" CM7 since January. A lot of people are experiencing really good battery life. Can't say so for myself since the Dinc is my main computer, but I would certainly say that it is the fastest ROM I've tried.
Do a nandroid backup. Try out a bunch of new setups. Restore the nandroid if you aren't happy. Simple as that--when you're rooted you can do a lot with these devices.

I will say that CM's GPU performance is better than that of the Incredible's on 2.2. My guess is that this is due to CM's release using more recent drivers for the Adreno 200. I've tested this with both benchmarks and games.
On Sims 3, owning the largest house makes panning/zooming is a virtual crawl on stock Sense, even with a good custom kernel. On CM7, it's playable, a huge difference. Quadrant advances/profession GPU score (not the worthless combined score) is nearly 150 points different. To give a perspective, it's 280 to 410 on average, which is a huge jump.

The best and most stable rom

I just rooted the EVO with 2.3.3 now I'm trying to get opinions on the best and most stable roms available
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Personal preference. I would say try out the ones you are interested in for about a week. Then go back to the one you liked the best. Or just use one till you find a glaring issue with then switch. I personally tried like 4-5 different roms they all seem better than the stock rom but I like CM 7 the best.
If you like AOSP (vanilla android), then Cyanogenmod 7 is pretty cool. It's one of the few AOSP ROMs with WiMAX working and HDMI mirroring.
If you like Sense, check out Synergy or Kinged Shooter. Both of those ROMs are pretty sweet. Synergy is a mix between Sense 2.1 and Sense 3.0, and shooter is a pure sense 3.0 ROM (Evo 3D port to be exact).
As already stated though, only you know which ROM is the best, just go out there and find ROMs you might like, back up your stock ROM, then start flashing!
Most stable? probably the stock rom
I'll join the bandwagon by suggesting CyanogenMod. It's a beautiful piece of work, it has a great set of features (you can move ANY app to the SD card! you can refuse apps' access to specific permissions! you get a free wifi hotspot!), it's amazingly stable, and it's FAST (faster than the stock Sense ROM).
Definitely go with MIUI. It is stable and takes up only 80 MB on your device memory.
I can't vouch for very many roms, and the stock one is definitely the most stable, but I have used cm6 and 7, damagecontrol and damageless, and decks.
The damageless rom with a netarchy cfs nohavs kernel was just as stable as the stock unrooted. And much snappier, as you can freeze sense and use jit. Ill probably go back to it but right now I'm using decks. 1.13b2, and its... just... so... fast...
I was a big user of the camera so I miss the sense camera, and 1.13b can be a little shaky at times but 1.12 was probably the best for general fast task switching use. I'm falling for aosp harder each day
Sent from my Decks Evo. Quickly.

[Q] Fastest Sense Rom

As of right now what is currently the fastest/smoothest Sense rom that is still being supported by the dev? Any comments are appreciated
As far as still supported you might be hard to find consitency...
My opinions would be for:
TeeROM 3.0 - developers "final" version
Stock+ 3.01 - Not getting active dev but its by far one of the best Sense roms.
McSense 2.6 - Another solid but non-dev rom
Edit: The likelyhood of finding a sense rom 2.1 or higher that is fast on the incredible is very unlikely. Way to resource needy.

My port of MikG is snappy and trouble free. Of course I could be a little biased. Lol. But seriously. It is the best Sense 2.1 + ROM as far as stability and speed. That's why I ported over the newest version for us. Try it at theMikMik. MikG Incredible forum. I think you'll be pleased.

I'd say any of the Sense 1.0 roms should be fine. If you want one without bloat, or many tweaks, Liberation 3.0 would fit the bill. It's been tested for stability. It is the final version though.
McSense is also a good choice for some theming and tweaks.
I just avoid any rom based off of another phone (port). Including Sense 3.0+
Personally I run a custom cm7 kang that I've stripped down and removed everything I deemed unnecessary. Turned off animations, use Launcher Pro, and it flies faster than any Sense rom.

What parts of sense are you wanting intact? If you're simply looking to stay away from AOSP, my experience with Insensitive Minimalist has been excellent. Very fast and designed to be highly customizable. I like it so much for its stability and compatibility I keep flashing back to my backup of that while I wait on issues to get hammered out of ICS. My other dinc is running Stock+, so if you want a ROM that is mostly stock, its also good. Inc Ultimate looks like its worth a try, but I haven't gotten around to it.
Ultimately, "still in development" is something I don't think applies to any sense Rom at the moment, as most of the really active devs seem to have moved on to other devices.
I flashed MikG and so far I'm loving it How is it with Gingertiny kernel?
I haven't tried them all, but have tried a few of the Sense 3.5 roms - and of course my stock Sense 2 roms - Virtuous Unity, Sense...quite slow and laggy.
Also tried BeatMod Bliss Sense - again same story...slow, laggy.
But just switched from G-Lite 2 (non sense rom( to MikRoms MikRunny 1.0 and for a Sense 3.5 based rom it's FAST. Faster than my original slow Gingerbread ROM, actually!
Add Supercharger script and a SDcard partition and you're flying ;-)
Oh I have a Desire Z, so RAM/speed is a real issue. So impressive that a ROM could run anything about Sense 2 at anything but prehistoric speeds :-D

Overall Performance and the Camera Quality
Again, its a matter of preference. Some people like Cameras apps from other ROMs, or off the market. Performance is a mixed bag too. I never had much luck with Sense 3.0 or 3.5 ROMs with performance, but other people say it works flawless.
Just give him the advice that probably 90% of the people here would: try them out and find out what works for you.
But if your looking for an opinion... the best cameras I've used have been in sense roms, but other than for the camera I can't stand sense, never cared much for eye candy.
I prefer speed and stability so I would say the best is aosp, aokp, cm, even miui. But never sense... again just adding my 0.02$

Thankyou alot guys now I could review for my tests on Monday
If you're talking bout something at the level of ICS 4.0.4, then I would say 'performance' wise AOKP is going to be better in general, not as much 'eye-candy' and such you'd get from Sense. (As far as I know, no Sense ICS rom has a working camera yet).
But if you're talking Gingerbread and earlier, it's really going to depend on the custom Rom. For example AOKP is most likely going to out perform a stock sense install, but a custom Sense Rom could be on par.
Guess it depends on where your priorities are, do you need more eye candy, or are you aiming more for raw performance/functionality?
