first is it possible to modify they theme of the device ?
second why do the pictures on my contact list seem blurred even when i use a high quality picture ?
and last what are the benefits of rooting it ?? and how safe is the process ?
if you want to theme your device there are various ROMs available which you can flash to your device. as to rooting i think its pretty much perfectly safe, the worst thing that can go wrong is you can fail and have to go again check out the defy wiki, it has lots of info which you should find useful (wiki is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=File:Motorola_Defy.jpg)

I am new to XDA. I trying to figure out what the different ROMS are or look like for the 8525. Can someone help out a noob .
all roms would look identical (if they are the same OS (WM5,WM6,WM6.1))
however each is customised in it's own way - registry tweaks / new applications etc.
so its all preference, look around flash a few (im assuming the device is unlocked / hardspl?) and see which you prefer
Sheesh
And i was just thinking i could make it 1 day without somone opening a thread on this topik.
Hi there ,
Well I just purchased a Diamond from a little shop down here in New Zealand . The problems started when I tried to register it on the HTC web site and found I had to go to the hong kong site to get my SN working .. I think that means I got a Parell imported version? Which is mostly cool since this phone hasnt offically been released in NZ .. BUT
I find the interface very laggy, which led me to here . Now I have tried all the tweaks in the tweak section and that has helped a tiny bit , but I think the real answer is going to involve me diving into ROM land . Now here is where I ask for forgiveness in advance, as possibly this info exists elswhere, but I just need a few questions answered before I risk hosing my new toy .
1. what sort of info do I need to know before applying a new ROM? i.e current ROM revision in my phone ,radio ect .. and more importantly how do I determine the ROM or ROMS that are currently in my phone , can i get an exact copy from somewhere
I am not too sure if Changing the rom would do anything to the radio , in fact I dont really 100% get the concept about rom updates vs Radio Rom updadtes .. does the diamond have separate roms for radio ?
So do I need a specfic rom for my region ?
Basicly I want to see if a new rom would help me in terms of the performance of the phone , but dont want to risk loosing anything in terms of radio or telephone calls .
its a good idea to backup your current ROM.. you can search the forums for how to do a ROM dump or look in the wiki.. or you may find that the current ROM on your device is already posted by someone here in the forums.
Flashing the current ROMs released here doesn't update your radio (unless its some official ROM containing a radio in the package). ROM is the operating system, etc.. Radio is the thing controlling radio functions (gsm, wifi, gps, etc). New radio ROM can possibly give better connectivity, battery life, etc.
follow the guide at www.modmydiamond.info for step by step flashing instructions.
hey there and thanks for being kind ,
I guess my worry is that somehow flashing it will prevent things like the FM RADIO program from working , or maybee make it impossible to connect to my phone company or something like that .. Sorry I am really new to this and dont mean to be a pain ..
at this point, i highly doubt that as the ROMs are still quite heavily based on the official ROMs that have come out.. anyway, you could always flash it back but if you're really scared about the consequences, then ROM flashing might not be for you..
nah, I am not THAT worried ha ha , i used to be really scared of the boogieman tho , in the end i looked under my bed at midnight and never worried after that. Going to follow this rteally awesome guide and let you know how I get on
yep all flashed and happy .. next question . is there a way to add all my apps tomtom ect and then somehow dump a ROM including all twaeaks I have made ?
i think you could dump it, but when you flash a different ROM, you can't restore just the tweaks and stuff that way.
do a search in this site for "SASHIMI" it will auto load cabs, and reg files and stuff.. it'll take you a little while to get all your reg files together (i'm doing it now.. zzz.. long overdue) but after that it'll be a snap to flash ROMs and get back up and running.
Hi all, as you can see I've been a member here for a good while and dipped in and out as and when I've owned any devices featured here.
I have a brand new, UK unbranded, sim free and factory fresh Defy arriving tomorrow and have read with interest the various posts here, including the WIKI but I've got a bit dizzy trying to work out what's new/current/most stable/best.
I'm very happy modding and flashing custom roms and have done since the XDA1.
Could anyone please fill me in with the essential tools I need, such as the clockwork recovery version I should be installing and also the best/most recent/most stable rom - Android 2.2 preferred. Also what can I use to overclock and any other system mods that people consider essential also gratefully received.
If there's a n00b how to somewhere and I've missed it, I apologise, but it's hard to figure out what's out of date and what isn't.
Once I'm up to speed on this particular device, I'll chip in where I can.
many thanks,
malty
I'm in no means a developer and unworthy of replying...but I'll try! In the dev section, there is a 'FAQ/Guides/Tutorials' section that is pretty up to date with links to just about everything needed.
Custom Recovery: I've used both tenfar's recovery and the clockworkmod recovery 2010-12-18 version that I believe is the most updated and works well. I like the latter version best so far.
Overclocking: Only one I've used is setvsel and liking it.
Root: I think Z4 root doesn't work on 2.2 and above, so you'll have to root with special version superoneclick.
Backing up applications: Good ol Titanium Backup.
As for custom roms, I'm sure many have preferrences but from what I've gathered, the FIN and Orange deblur are working great (I have two phones, ones on stock tmous froyo, the other is 2.1 UK2.34 deblur...loving the deblur!). Check out Pays, JBoogie, and Higgsy's ROMs in dev section. Also, in the dev section you'll see the sbf file folder at top of forum to flash away with.
Again, I'm pretty much a noob so I probably missed a bunch of stuff...but this should get you started for now
Hi there,
I'm a brazilian owner of a Motorola Defy and have been looking to upgrade it to cyanogen since the day I bought it. Then I learned Motorola was somewhat working on a official 2.3 update and decided to wait and see the results. That was months ago.
So I decided to finally take a step and try CM7. Thing is, I'm a completely newbie in android (this is my first phone wich uses the system), so a lot of things in the guides simply don't make sense to me. Can anyone explain me some things?
1. Can I upgrade it to the last CM7 build without losing the ability to move it back to official 2.2? How?
2. If not, will I be able to change to the official 2.3 when it comes out?
3. Will the system be 100% portuguese?
4. I'm colorblind and don't know my lense color. My phone is somewhat new but I would like to be sure wich is my camera before changing the system. Is there a way to do that without looking at the lense? (I heard about red camera doing noises when switching on and etc.)
Last, can anyone guide me through the upgrade process, from the very start?
Android version: 2.2.1
Version number: 3.4.2-107_JDNL-9
Thanks for your time and sorry for the bad english/yet another newbie request.
some help for you

as for the color of lens have a friend look at it for you.
The rest of your questions are covered in the forums. But yes you can go back to an official rom by flashing it using RSD lite.
Happy flashing

Hi,
the model of your lens is not related to a color.
In this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116694, this post gives you an easy way to find out which lens you have :

I'll check these links *again*. Most of my doubts still exist but thanks for the effort, anyway.

Thanks hervelo,
did you try this method yourself? I ran the app and followed the instructions but could not find any "cameracommon" entry. I haven't really understand what he meant with the emoticons..
Yes i did and it works, don't forget to launch and exit the camera (4 and 5) and it should work. I have made this mistake the first time.

Found out I had a lot of processes going on and the cameracommon entry was being forgotten faster than I was searching for it.
But hey, it says I have BAYER device. It means I have a red camera, isn't it?
Not necessarily RED but it means that you should be able to record 720p. I have a BAYER lens too but I did'nt try any hack to do it. I am waiting for the right CM7 nightly to make it work.
Ok, I got it. Thanks for the help and good news, I'm a lot more confident now. Gonna wait for the rest of my questions to be answered now, like the language one
I am french and the french version is pretty good. My point of vue is that the quality of the translation will depend on people reporting for mistakes.
Anyway, read carefully the documentation chem57guru gave you, the FAQ is really complete, so it should answer almost all of your questions.
Good luck.
The company I work for uses a horrible old product called Cognito.
We are developing an Android App to replace this but in the meanwhile we have a problem - within our budget we can only run this on Rhodium devices and with specific ROMS.
We have trouble getting decent Rhodiums and finding ones with the correct ROM is even harder. I now have a box of them with the wrong ROMs.
I have searched around for the specific ROMs we need but it seems that mos of the download links I can find have gone.
Even when I can find a ROM that seems to be OK, there always seem to be other issues.
I think the following ROMs should work (in theory):
- 1.86.401.4 (67102) WWE
- 1.14.161.6 (50207) WWE
I figure the next step would be to dump a working ROM and write that back to the other devices.
Can anyone tell me in simple steps how I can achieve this? I have started looking into ROM kitchens but it has far more detail than I think I need and I feel a bit swamped with it all.
Thanks
Update
I have managed to get the RAW files from a working device using this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=501871
However, I cannot find any tools to put these back together. All the links seem to be dead
I know this is an old thread, but did you ever figure out how to dump the a rom from a working phone and restore it again?
I have a TP2 Rhodium 100 set up with WM6.5 just like it should be(with all the tweaks and apps), and I'm going to give it to family - But I don't really like to have to set it up again all over, so a way to make a rom dump and restore it would be really nice
Its now 2015 - there must be something (I have searched and all threads and post seem to be either dead or the links don't work or the programs are not available anymore).
