Hey there xda!
I was wondering, why factory S-OFF phones(speaking as an owner of a desire a8181) cant be rooted using the unrevoked method? Anyone got a clue?
why? you have a factory S-off Desire? (apo pou re mastora)?

Swithc off the phone, then press volume down while pressing also the power button untill it boot on the bootloader (white screen)..There u will see on the top S-ON !!!!!
If u see S-OFF mean YOU (or someone else if u bought on ebay) did a full root on it with some specific procedure
If u have S-OFF but no root permission, just run an RUU and then root again with unrevoked.

there are phones that come from factory with S-OFF.. read somewhere it's developer phone or something.
if S-OFFed using AlphaRev, make sure hboot is not updated too when running RUU, otherwise the security will be turned on again.
back on topic, not sure why that version of Desire can't be rooted with Unrevoked.. read the other day someone else was having the problem too.

I'm not too sure why some come factory s-off, but considering it is, have you tested to see if fastboot works? If it does, all you need to do, is download a recovery image (I use RA-Desire) put the phone in fastboot mode and run "fastboot flash recovery INSERT FILENAME". Assuming that works, you can just install a custom rom with root included. Unfortunately this is all just theory as my phone was s-on when I got it. So do anything at your own risk
Edit: just another thought. Because you are s-off, it might be possible to go into the default recovery/bootloader and use "adb pull /" to pull a complete copy of your system etc (as a backup), and then use "adb push ROMFOLDER /" to install a custom rom, although if the rom normally runs scripts while flashing as a zip, this might not be possible unless someone sends you a copy from their already installed phone, same as before, do at your own risk because I have no idea if it would work

Well i believe so. The phone i m talking about was destined to be a demo in a store (sth vodafone)(it came in a plain white box with just the charger inside, when i tried to download htc sync from htc it could not recognise the imei and it had a demo video that appeared every 2 minutes) Actually i'm not sure, because i first noticed the s-off after a failed attempt with unrevoked(before i did not notice if it was on or off). The phone is generally untouched, as i got it brand new(na'nai kala h mana pou douleuei sti vodafone). bEFORE attempt rooting, i had updated OTA to 2.2 froyo(wwe unbranded). @cr1960 i have not that version. My current spes are:
BRAVO PVT1 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT 0.93.0001
RADIO 5.11.05.27
*ROM: 2.2 OTA official htc update v.2.29.405.2
@w.0.o.t: how to ruu? is it safe? do i lose settings or data?
@NeoDriver: how do I test fastboot?
Thanks for the quick responses!
[edit] i have found another guy with s-off that he couldnt root with unrevoked(same error), but he was on stock 2.1 with 0.7 hboot
There's nothing above the S-OFF part when in HBOOT which is in pink at all no?
Quick question, when you go to the bootloader, does it display "ALPHAREV" at the top? It's just that your HBOOT (v0.93.0001) with S-OFF, is what the alpharev s-off gives.
Either way, to test fastboot, power off your phone and plug it into your USB. Hold the BACK button on the front of your phone and power it on, let go once you are in fastboot. You should be shown a white screen very similar to the bootloader but it should say FASTBOOT USB. In the tools folder of the Android SDK is fastboot. Open a cmd prompt, cd to the tools directory and run "fastboot devices". Your device should be there. Next thing to do would be "fastboot flash recovery FILENAME"
Im just not too sure if these fastboot commands are only active in AlphaRev's images =/
Oh and running an RUU is perfectly safe but as far as I know, it is a complete wipe of everything!
Hope this helps
when in bootlader i see:
BRAVO PVT1 SHIP S-OFF

Hmm, Odd =P
How did trying fastboot go? Any luck with flashing a recovery?
check my previous post
[edit] Im having a little problem with the fastboot. installed the sdk, navigated innto cmd to "tools"folder and found a "fastboot.exe" no fastboot services. Tried to execute it with "start fastboot.exe" and it failed(could not find "AdbWinApi.dll"). any clue ?
you literally just need to type fastboot, thats it, it should then give you a list of stuff. use fastboot devices to make sure your phone is being seen by it.

You don't run the files in the folders, you use a command prompt to run the fastboot commands
still cant find AdbWinApi.dll, trying to re install sdk...
[edit] reinstalled and retried but it still cant find the dll. somewhere i read that i should install htc sync, will that do ?
Run SDK Manager.exe and download "Android SDK tools". I forgot it doesnt come with everything nowadays.
Ok, after just updating my SDK, it seems like google has moved the dll you need. Copy the fastboot.exe from /tools to /platform-tools then run it from that folder =) Thats should make it work
thanks for the tip. followed it and did a quick vid. if you'd like check it out, i think it went good
That does seem to be working, if you wanna be brave you could try flashing a custom recovery and see if it completes

Well, here we go again. how? someone gave me these instructions, but im not sure:
Download any rooted ROM you like and place on SD.
If you want a ROM with A2SD+, then partition SD properly before copying ROM.zip
Download AmonRA 2.0.1 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4481275/reco...ire-v2.0.1.img
Flash it with Android Flasher http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794638
Boot device into recovery and flash the ROM.zip from the SD.
I also found a guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814381
which also has a solution to the cid error i get, but is the risk worth taking?
Anyway got some general questions:
1) to flash a rom you need to be root or root is only for pre-rooted roms?
2)i see custom recovery everywhere but no explanation on "what is it", "what does it do"
3)is there a way to backup email and sms from the htc mail apps?
4)will a factory reset delete anything on my sd card?
Guys im really sorry to post such n00b questions(i hate being n00b). please excuse me
Hello everyone,
I'm running MIUI Ganii-Mod on my device at the moment. It runs like a charm but I don't get GPS to lock. I tried every method mentioned here in the forum (gps.vision, changing Servers, those partition commands) but it still won't lock. So I guess my only opportunity is to flash another radio.
I am a bit frightened of flashing those because I once tried and my device ended into a complete brick - had to send it to support, luckily got it repaired on warranty. I flashed the radio with the method of renaming the *.zip file and think I got a corrupted file so everything broke.
Now i've read that flashing via fastboot is safe because the radio fileis checked before flashing. Only problem is: I don't know hoe to do that. It's not the commands but I have a few questions.
1. I've read that I need an ENG HBOOT for that method. How to get one?
2. Semms like you have to check some MD5 sums. Where do I find them and what exactly is to check?
I searched the forum already with no success. So I hope somebody can help me on that one.
Thanks
TobiS
Errr, Nobody?
you can do fastboot if you have fastboot, if you dont you can do the PC10img method via bootloader,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970809
Yep, I know that but do I have to check something before? Does every radio match the phone?
Read the thread, it says he has test all radios on his G2 and they all work fine, if you get a error then you might need to set your CID to 111111, i used this method on my g2 without any issues
PC10IMGS are for bootlaoder(hboot)
.img files are for fastboot which you need the ENG-Hboot to do(s-off)
If the PC10IMG not what you wanted to do then you can do the Fastboot way
you will need to flash the ENG-HBOOT to your phone, this is a lot more risky if commands done wrong you can fully brick the phone and let with nothing,
aslo you gotta clarify what phone you have the desire Z or a g2
i think the g2 can use any radio so far, its the Desire Z that has issue with radios and flashing, im not too sure on that though
you will also need to setup ADB/Fastboot on your computer
once you have all that download the radio.img you want and go to your fastboot shell
and type the commands to flash radio
Fastboot is the safest way to flash anything
Yeah, I've read that thread already a few times. I own a Desire Z and as I said I already broke my phone once while flashing the Zip file. So you say that the Desire Z has problems with flashing. How do I check if the radio is compatible to my phone?

sorry, i just saw ur radio version..
i think about every gingebread rom require a 5.x radio
flash the latest radio, as u have s-off use the command "fastboot flash radio radio.img" in fastboot mode connecting ur phone to ur pc..u can extract the img file from the zip in the radio thread
be carefull about flashing it..the radio is the most important thing in ur phone, u can several brick it if u do it wrong..search some guides about how to flash the radio if u dont know about it
the safest way is through fastboot anyway, and throught the recovery will not work with cwm3.x and up

I need to send my DHD to repair, so I want to make it (almost) stock. It is now ENG S-OFF, HBOOT 0.85.2007, radio 26.14.04.28_M, CID HTC_Y13.
I think I will let it stay S-OFF, so I would just install a RUU.exe.
I have tried with two different releases of RUU's, both RUU_Ace_sen30_S_HTC_WWE_3.12.401.1_Radio_12.65.60.29.
The process stops at the moment when it says "ten minutes". It then shortly shows that I am not using the correct upgrade tool, which probably means that I am using a wrong RUU? What am I doing wrong?
it depends which country your in I need to know to help you.

or If you want to stay S-OFF, then u can restore the original backup and unroot...
unfortunately I did not take a backup of the stock, I have just checked :-(
Actually I have the goldcard I used to unlock and root it. However, my vol up button is not working ( vol down is) - which is why it has to go to service.
Is there anything I can do with that when installing the RUU from Windows?
I might go the hack kit, I have never used it that way around. I just try to understand what the problem is about installing the RUU, CID? - the ext4, that it does not like (I am on ARHD, Gingerbread and Ext4 recovery)?
When I try to use the RUU.exe: The fault comes when it is going to restart to bootloader, then it says: "fault 155, fault when updating the image"

If your volume rocker is broken, maybe that is the issue, it stays pressed. You should try to flash a RUU from command prompt and fastboot, but first you have to get the PD98IMG.zip file....
Vol up does not act as if it is stuck, more like no reaction. The wifi also turned off a few days later, and I have seen that this is a normal fault, first vol up goes, then wifi - and that it takes a new board.
As said, I have the goldcard with a PD98img.zip on. There is a lot of ".img" files in that. Shall I fastboot flash to the recovery.img, that is within that zip, and then what?
Or do I need to find it from the procedure of looking at a temp-file when I try to install the RUU.exe?
Sorry for asking, but I think that I better double check in this situation

you can flash the zip file from fastboot...the img file you will be able just if you are ENG S-OFF
Just get the original RUU and then run it. maybe the PD98IMG.zip file that u have in your sdcard is not the correct one. Make sure that it is the one for your phone!!
Thank you - I am eng S_OFF
I am not sure I understand what you propose. Shall I extract the zip file from the RUU? What would the name be I should look for Can I fastboot a zip file, I thought it had to be an .img file?

not actually. I think flashing a PD98IMG.zip file is better and safer. I am just saying that you should try using the correct RUU.
but can I do that without using vol up?
You can flash the RUU with the phone in fastboot. Plug it in (you should see fastboot USB in red), have the file in the PC, open a cmd session as admin and navigate to where the PD98IMG.zip file is and then type:
Fastboot oem rebootRUU (you should get a black screen with silver HTC)
Fastboot flash zip PD98IMG.zip (when you get the okay in the cmd screen, ignore the green bar in the phone)
Fastboot reboot
That will flash the file without using volume rocker. Hope it works...

Hi folks,
quick intro ans explanation, I've started a new job, been given a Desire (Bravo) to use until the phone contracts come up in a few months. I need to use this for business, so I dont want anything to extreme, I have upgraded with the official GB firmware (it was on 2.2.1? first, then OTA update to 2.2.??, then i found the official GB and flashed that.
I'm coming from the Galaxy 3 forum (GT-i5801) been flashing that for a few years, so i understand the basics, root/custom rom/recovery etc., even rooted the wifes Galaxy Mini for her to give a boost with ram manager/set cpu and off course app2sd/link2sd. These are the same reasons i want to root the Desire, lack of storage, be able to run ram managers and clean off the bloatware, but still be stable on stock rom. The Galaxy 3 can be clean flashed with ODIN, or through CWM with GB/ICS/JB roms, the Mini was even just with an update zip.
I have been researching the past few nights, watching tuts, various forums and sites, and i must admit i'm still lost, I was about to try and flash, when i read somewhere that some methods may not work with official GB...
I cant even find the HBOOT USB setting..... I dont fancy having to go to work and say I bricked the phone ( i know, always a chance, take no responsibility etc. etc.)
Dont want to spam the board to much, even if someone can pm me with the best way forward, I've even read some stuff that seemed contradictory, i only want to get root/su to move all my apps etc with TB, and clean up a bit (bloatware).

You need to run fastboot command from the fastboot directory.. so if it's for example in "C:\SDK\platform-tools"
Then first you need to do following: (in CMD window)
cd C:\SDK\platform-tools
Then you can use fastboot commands.
Also word of advise: use 4ext recovery, it's better in every possible way.
You dont even need to use fastboot, once you're S-OFF you can flash recovery using this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1751258&highlight=4ext
If you want to use fastboot just unpack PB99IMG.zip and flash recovery.img

Installing the PB99IMG.zip was a piece of cake, maybe a good idea to update that tut, with this as another "solution".

What should I do, ask the mod to delete this thread, or let it sit for the time being?
