I honestly can't say I've seen those kinds of adapters out in the wild. My friend also made the same mistake when trying to surprise me as a birthday gift, but the return was super simple through Amazon.
You can't return the cable? (Or, if you can, would return shipping dissuade you to do so...?)
I got mine off the old Ebay for 5 bucks shipped... nifty.

yeah the cable was like 2 bucks and shipping was 3.89... not looking forward to sending the cable back for less than half the money
probably not ideal to be using 2 adapters, just return the mini.

It is Micro HDMI to HDMI.
I found the cheapest to be a 1 footer for 11$ with free shipping from Brooklyn on ebay. Also, if you use Bing cash back, you can get 8% off (88 cents ). I would post links, but i cant.
I just searched for Micro HDMI on ebay and came up with plenty of options for $10 or less.

I couldn't believe this but, I was at a verizon store yesterday asking about the hdmi cables and another customer overheard me. He pulled me aside and told me that you can get at lowes in the satellite dish dept. He said you could get a 12 foot cord for half of what verizon charges. I'm going to head over there shortly to find out if it's true.
Update... If lowes has them I didnt see them. they had regular hdmi cables but nothing for micro usb. I think the guy misunderstood what I was looking for.

Buying non-oem from china means it'll work for a month then it breaks. Long run you're gonna spend a lot more. Avoid eBay spend a few bucks more and get something reliable.
I got my hdmi cable (15 ft) and a new usb cause the box one is too short (6 ft) for only 15 bucks from monoprice.com with next day shipping.

Watched a few video reviews of unboxing. Some are getting the usb to hdmi adapter and some aren't. I'm wondering if this is how wirefly and letstalk are selling theirs so much cheaper. Bad business, but maybe they are taking the adapter out before shipping, and then planning on reselling it as new?? If you have the phone please list where you got it and whether you got the adapter or not.

I believe the "reviewer's devices" are the ones that come with the MHL adapter. I've read that consumer's version of the phone wont come with it. Luckily I bought mine ages ago when I had the Evo 3D.
I doubt any retailer is removing the MHL adapter. (unless you ordered your phone from Gamestop, that is).
The more likely explanation is that reviewers were also sent MHL adapters so that they could give more complete reviews. It's just a sign of the times that retail devices lack connectivity components. At least phones still come with AC adapters and USB cords (knock on wood).
I just find it strange that the box even has a compartment for it, but its empty with some of the reviews.

I'm willing to bite for the full price of the Samsung MHL adapter just because I know the S3 has some problems without the official one. Anyone know of the best place to buy it? Amazon shows one but it ships from the UK and the one on Samsung's site is not compatible. Is it not out yet?
Anyone else picking it up?
I don't think it is out yet but yes, I might be getting one. It will be a whole lot easier surfing the web on my tv via the phone than using the clunky tv remote control.
I remember reading some post of a user buying one from ebay for about 9 bucks and it worked brilliantly.
i may take a chance on monoprice

I have gotten lots of good things from them including a 75ft HDMI CL2 cable for $30 shipped and a universal GPS mount that works great for any phone for like $5 shipped....and it's never been junk really, always decent quality, very happy with them over the years for any type of audio/video/cable/adapter
only thing is no way to know if it is compatible yet until someone bites, so I may do it one day soon
Well my only thing about some of the non Samsung ones is I read they don't output 1080p if that matters to you.
I emailed monoprice support about the one you linked. Will let you guys know what they say.

I personally prefer OEM items. They usually sell for around $11.
eBay, Amazon.
I already checked with Monoprice and they said that their adapter is not compatable with the S3. The Monoprice adapter is a 5 pin adapter and Samsung changed the S3 to an 11 pin adapter. There is a 5 pin - 11 pin adapter available. Most of the mhl adapters out are 5 pin and will not work with the S3. That is what I have been told. The Samsung mhl adapter is $40. You could get the Monoprice 5 pin mhl for $11 and a 5 pin - 11 pin adapter for another $10. That would work but I would personally wait for a cheaper 11 pin mhl adapter to come out than hook up multiple adapters.
constant power needed?
I was really interested in getting one of these but it looks like you will need to have an HDMI cable AND a micro USB connected to a wall socket for the MHL adapter to work... is this true, and if so, is it worth all the cable hassle?

Yes please let us know what they tell you. I thought they flipped the pins so only the official Samsung adapter would work. If 720P works, I'd be totally fine with that...
I <3 Monoprice forever. They sell things at the price they're supposed to be sold at. Still slightly pricey, but the best one stop shop I've seen.

Its a no go with those:
" Regarding our MHL adapter and the upcoming release of the Galaxy S3 in the U.S. We have tested and confirmed that the S3 uses a different pinout in regards to MHL, so our current MHL device will not work for it. We have already put in a suggestion for a device that will fully support the new S3, and we are actively working on cases and other accessories for the S3 as well. "
We will just have to wait.

Any chance the MHL adapter also charges the phone? With 1%/min or game play, I can't imagine it will last very long during a game and outputting to TV...
Yes it charges the phone, but it also uses up about 200ma itself so make sure you've got a good charger.

That's hardly any help, do you not think he did that already?
To the OP, I can't recommend any specific cable to you, but I do have some experience with some of those "OEM chargers" that are often advertised on Amazon. I ordered 2 of them off amazon, and both of them were not actually OEM chargers and they both barely worked. One didn't even charge my phone (emailed the seller and got a refund, but it's the principle), and the other one had a faulty tip that didn't sit tight in my phone. The only thing I can suggest is being careful, sorry I can't link you a cable. Hope you find one.

I have bought many cables from digitalkynectonline on Ebay. The cables have held up very good. I have bought 6ft and 10ft cables and they are reasonably priced. The ends are molded unlike some of the cheap cables you get on ebay. The cord is heavier than than alot to and seems to take alot of abuse. The ends seem to fit in the phone nice and tight.
I have putchased the cheap ones off of amazon. Only use prime. Most work for several months. Expensive ones seem to work as well as the cheap ones. If I get one that does not work I ship it back at no cost. For $2 or $3 dollars a cable it is worth it.

I don't like buying cables chargers or batteries on amazon eBay or other similar sites. I've been burned a few times. Rather then taking my chances, I order from reputable company's only. I know this might seem out of left field, but Motorola's MicroUSB cables have always been incredibly reliable for me. They're made tough and any deep operations I may do (S-OFF, adb sideloading, etc) work flawlessly with them. They're not the perfect price like at monoprice.com but if you don't care about price and just want quality, Moto ain't too shabby.
