If everything has been idle for a few minutes, I would first try running unrevoked again, right from the screen with the triangle (that's recovery screen, you just don't have a custom recovery yet). If that fails, then shut the phone off and boot to the bootloader. See if its S off or S on. If its S off, you just need to flash a recovery. If it's S on, I would RUU and then try Unrevoked again. Let us know if its S off or S on.

Mmmm, is the phone any diff, e.g. Superuser App, ROM manager installed? Or still completely unrooted. Either way, might try again.

showed s-off, but then i tried rebooting to recovery and red arrow, then turned off, booted to bootloader and red arrow, then waited a few mins and then phone booted up to system
If you have rom manager on the phone now, try opening it and clicking "Flash Clockwork Recovery."
unrevoked is still staying at waiting for system to settle, why is this? it usually goes away after like 30 seconds.

Okay, you just need to install recovery. As jlstafford said, if you use rom manager, select flash recovery. If that gives you trouble (depends if unrevoked got Super User installed before it failed), then u need to flash a PC36IMG of recovery. Let us know.

Just be patient with it for a few minutes. I've had that take af ew minutes before. Also, something could be interfering with it, such as anti virus, pda net, doubletwist, htc sync, etc. Who knows. The bottom line is that if you're S off already, you really don't need to run unrevoked again. You can finish it yourself, manually. Put this PC36IMG(amon ra 2.3) on the root of your sd card. Boot to your bootloader. Let it update, by selecting volume up. WHen it finishes, boot to recovery. You should now have recovery. From that point, wipe and flash a rom if desired.

Download the file I just attatched . Put it on the main directory of your sd card, not in any folders. Don't rename it, just download it and put it on hte card. When it's on your card, pull your battery out. Put the battery back in, then hold volume down and power button. You should get to the bootloader, and it should wait a few seconds, then scan the card, find the PC36IMG, and ask you to update. Select yes when it asks you. Then when it asks you to reboot, select NO. Then from the bootloader menu, select recovery. What happens? DO you get to recovery successfully now?
EDIT: and this is assuming you are indeed S off. You said you were S off, for sure right?
I was trying to get him to flash a recovery not in bootloader, since it seemed like he couldn't get to hboot or recovery. Although, he may be able to now.

Right, I agreed with you on that, and suggested that he use ROM Manager to flash recovery as well. However then his next response was that he was trying to use Unrevoked again. He must be able to get to the bootloader, otherwise he wouldn't have been able to see if he was S on or S off. Also, depending how far Unrevoked got before it failed, it may or may not have installed the Super User App. If it didn't get that far, he probably won't be able to use ROM Manager, as it wont be granted SU. If that's the case, a PC36IMG should work, and isn't hard, as long as your volume buttons and power buttons function!

I was concerned of that. If you are S off, please download the PC36IMG I attatched and follow the instructions. It should work man, as long as that bootloader is S off. Have you tried that yet? What was the result? The critical part you are missing right now is Recovery. If you can get recovery, you can then flash a rom, which will have Super User app and busybox included anyways. You just need recovery.
I got it, it was a bad download of unrevoked.

Assuming you have a way to get the file onto your sdcard (like plugging it directly into your computer), you can flash the recover image from hboot. I am not sure where you can get the plane jane clockwork recovery, but you can get the slightly modified clockwork recovery with easy scrolling enabled from the thread linked below. That should at least get you up and running again and then you can flash back the regular CW Recovery from Rom Manager if you don't like the easy scroll version.
Instructions for flashing from hboot are also in the thread.

I saw it but was guessing he meant s-off because of the way he said it. Hopefully unrevoked worked for him then as I don't think you have to have s-off for it to work.
Other option would be to flash a stock RUU from hboot. That should work even if he is s-on.

to the OP
If nothing else works,
I agree with sdorn. RUU is the way.
Thats what will fix your issues.
If you cant get to recovery and you have S-on, meaning that you cannot flash a custom recovery, your only option is to RUU. There is a link in android development. You will need a windows computer. Try this and report back. If it doesnt work and gives you a USB error, simply: 1. Exit the ruu program (KEEP YOUR PHONE PLUGGED IN), and 2. Run it again.
Boom, no more brick
but, hours worth of retweaking.

He can't get into recovery, so he can't apply the update. He's got to ruu.
1. Download the update.zip file from here. (DIRECT FROM GOOGLE.)
2. Drop the file on the root of your SD card. (Meaning, don’t put it in any folder.)
*MAKE SURE IT’S NAMED UPDATE.ZIP!
3. Turn your phone off.
4. Press and hold the Volume Down and Power at the same time to boot into HBOOT.
5. When the white HBOOT screen appears, use the volume button to move down to “RECOVERY.”
6. Press the Power button to select “RECOVERY.”
7. When the triangle and exclamation appears, hold the Volume Up and Power button at the same time.
8. Using the volume button, scroll down to “apply sdcard:update.zip” and select it.
9. Your phone will now update!
10. It could take some time, so be patient. When it reboots, you are on official 2.2. Yay!

Unrevoked drivers don't play nice with the ruu.
Follow above posters to RUU to 2.2 stock.
UnRevoked 3.2 will give you root and CWM.

I might be the only person who actually likes that it goes into recovery when plugged into usb and off. No stupid button combinations to remember. Personally the only time my phone is off is when it's dead. Otherwise it's 24/7 operation. To each his own though. I'm sure there is a guide on how to remove the recovery in the android development section.

There isn't one. You either have to stay with the phone powered on in Clockwork and charging, or flash back to the stock recovery (e.g. if you have fastboot/adb working, then "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img", where recovery.img is a stock recovery image from the stock ROM).
So I successfully rooted my phones recently using this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045 and everything worked fine until I screwed up a rom flash and sent it into a looping boot. Now my pc only recognizes it as qualcomm three times after I select recovery from bootloader so I cannot boot the Amon Ra Recovery. Also I get fives vibrates and the blinking led if it doesn't go into bootloader.

You need to put your SD card in an adapter so you can connect it to your computer, open it up and just click and drag the file in it. Once on the SD card, if you boot using volume down, the phone will automatically look for that file first.
Ok well I just realized that on the bootloader screen it say s-on and I couldn't get PC36IMG to work...it doesn't ask if I want to do anything with the file it checks it then nothing happens.

Actual Help
Alright let me give you some help: The same thing happened to me. Download the Autoroot method here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448&highlight=autoroot
get to the screen with the red exclamation point and make sure your phone is plugged in
get into the autoroot v2.3 folder and select StartRecovery.bat.
if the deamen fails then you need to go into your computers Task Manager and stop adb.exe in processes
then try StartRecovery.bat again until you can get it to boot a temporary recovery on your phone
From here, start up your USB within the recovery and transfer the URFSOff.zip file from within the AutoRoot v2.3 subfolder called res.
You can also transfer the PC36IMG.zip image I posted below to your SDCard just to make sure its there and good to go... This is the newest RA recovery (i think 2.3).
Go ahead and flash the URFSoff.zip file from within the temporary recovery. This will give you S-Off on the bootscreen allowing you to flash the recovery.
Turn you phone off and boot into bootloader by pressing power and volume (sorry at this point i really don't know how in dept I need to be).
When the bootloader starts up it should automatically look for the PC36IMG.zip
It will find it and load it up then ask you if you want to update the recovery...go ahead and do this...
I would not go ahead and reboot your phone upon the prompt instead get back to the bootloader by selecting no (i think its volume down).
Now you should select Recovery and you should have a rooted full recovery to allow you to flash a custom rom. Just download any rooted rom...and use USB toggle to load it to the SD. Let me know if you need any help

1. Try it again ; it happens sometimes to a lot of people where it does that the first time, then works the second
2. Boot into the bootloader, do a clear storage, then try the PC36IMG again.
Let me know if neither work.

That didn't work. Weird issue is I can get the phone to boot and not restart as long as I don't have the SDcard inserted. I am wiping the SDcard now to see if that helps.

I am running unrevoked now to get a custom recovery installed.

Alright tried the Unrevoked method, it fails and says lost communication with device. Now the phone only vibrates 5 times when booting.
Thanks for sticking with me here, this has become very frustrating.
*Got it to boot, trying unrevoked again. NVM it restarted then vibrated 5 times. Now trying to get it to boot without the SDcard in.
you said you were trying to get to stock. you also said you downloaded a stock ruu.. in order for an ruu to upload you need htc sync installed on your computer do you have those Installed... if the ruu works you will still be s-off at this point you have to get the S- On tool from unrevoked and run that

I had HTC Sync installed. I actually just uninstalled it per the unrevoked directions. The RUU completed but the phone just restarts when I try to swype to unlock it or if I wait long enough it will just restart on its own. I can't flash the S-on tool without a custom recovery installed, since running the RUU method removed the custom recover is that correct? I have tried to boot into the recovery via the hboot method and that just results in 5 vibrations.
are you able to use the phone.. can you install Clockworkmod recovery App?

Right now I am unable to the phone just keeps restarting after each boot. If i can get it to stop rebooting I will try to install clockwork recovery.
I am actually going to try an reinstall htc sync, reboot my comp, then rerun the RUU and hopefully that will stabilize the reboots.
one similar thread was close, but no cigar....so here goes
EVO 4G rooted Unrevoked with amon ra 2.3, phone has been working just great since November, only thing I have done to it is flash some Roms, right now its running the Express RC1, I tried flashing the latest version of Express but it wouldnt take, but thats another story.
I was planning on flashing to another ROM so I connected the phone to PC and copied folders from sd card to PC folder, then I went into recovery and was going to backup again but with nandroid, and saw that the recovery menu prompts were different than what I normally see on other phones I work on, which I use Amon Ra 3.11, SO.. I decided to "upgrade" to the 3.11, so I rebooted to bootloader, then fastboot, went to command prompt and sent the flash of recovery.img to the phone, it said it was completed and I went to switch to recovery and it hung up on the splash screen.
After waiting for too long I pulled the battery and tried again, same problem, so I pulled it again and tried flashing it with Android Flasher, same thing, no luck. I did some searching and looked into ROM manager, but that only works with Clockwork, and I have Amon Ra.
I've tried periodically these same steps over again and cannot get it flashed, nor can get into recovery, getting to the bootloader is fine, booting the phone is fine, and works fine, but recovery just wont do.
I have also read that I could just upload an RUU and install that, but that would eliminate the nandroid, and as last resort will do it, but is there some other way I can get to recovery?
Edit: regarding clockwork, could I also install clockwork thru ROM manager, then come around and install amon ra? sounds like I could but...?

You should try that, that's easier way for you. Then flash amon ra properly. Always check md5 sum of download, the file could have been corrupted.
Sent from my lair.
Ok cool will give that a try later tonight thanks

Well that didnt work either, went to the ROM manager, and flashed the clockwork recovery, rebooted into recovery but it never got there just hung up on the HTC splash screen before it, and I left it there for about 15 minutes.
I can reboot and its working fine, just cant get into recovery, what now?
Maybe RUU install?

Did you go in applications then settings and see if fastboot is unchecked. Or pull out the battery, then hold the power button and volume down and see when you get to the screen with three androids on the bottom, scroll to recovery and choose it by clicking power button?

Try fastboot erase recovery through FASTBOOT, then flashing a Recovery image again. Won't hurt to try.
