[Q] Bricked? ....maybe, please help - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I successfully rooted my phones recently using this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045 and everything worked fine until I screwed up a rom flash and sent it into a looping boot. Now my pc only recognizes it as qualcomm three times after I select recovery from bootloader so I cannot boot the Amon Ra Recovery. Also I get fives vibrates and the blinking led if it doesn't go into bootloader.

Have you tried not using your computer volume down button and power button puts it into bootloader then scroll to recovery
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

Try reflashing your recovery. Go to the Amon Ra thread and grab the PC36IMG.zip. Put it on your SD card root and then boot into the bootloader. Press volume up to flash it once it prompts you.

Sounds like you're in diagnostic mode. Try pulling the battery and letting it sit for a minute or so

You need to put your SD card in an adapter so you can connect it to your computer, open it up and just click and drag the file in it. Once on the SD card, if you boot using volume down, the phone will automatically look for that file first.

Ok well I just realized that on the bootloader screen it say s-on and I couldn't get PC36IMG to work...it doesn't ask if I want to do anything with the file it checks it then nothing happens.

Then you aren't rooted. Try putting the stock pc36img.zip on your SD to boot back to the stock rom, and then use unrevoked.

Actual Help
Alright let me give you some help: The same thing happened to me. Download the Autoroot method here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448&highlight=autoroot
get to the screen with the red exclamation point and make sure your phone is plugged in
get into the autoroot v2.3 folder and select StartRecovery.bat.
if the deamen fails then you need to go into your computers Task Manager and stop adb.exe in processes
then try StartRecovery.bat again until you can get it to boot a temporary recovery on your phone
From here, start up your USB within the recovery and transfer the URFSOff.zip file from within the AutoRoot v2.3 subfolder called res.
You can also transfer the PC36IMG.zip image I posted below to your SDCard just to make sure its there and good to go... This is the newest RA recovery (i think 2.3).
Go ahead and flash the URFSoff.zip file from within the temporary recovery. This will give you S-Off on the bootscreen allowing you to flash the recovery.
Turn you phone off and boot into bootloader by pressing power and volume (sorry at this point i really don't know how in dept I need to be).
When the bootloader starts up it should automatically look for the PC36IMG.zip
It will find it and load it up then ask you if you want to update the recovery...go ahead and do this...
I would not go ahead and reboot your phone upon the prompt instead get back to the bootloader by selecting no (i think its volume down).
Now you should select Recovery and you should have a rooted full recovery to allow you to flash a custom rom. Just download any rooted rom...and use USB toggle to load it to the SD. Let me know if you need any help

Am I supposed to just simply run this file as an administrator? Because that did not work...I apologize for any stupidity for I am very new to all this.

What exactly is going on can you get to the screen with the red exclamation point....did you download the autoroot2.3 method. Unzipped it to a common folder and then just go into the folder to find all the files....you may have to run as an administrator but I don't know....make sure you have HTC sync and Android sdk installed.on your comp too.

Alright I got it figured out. Finally the stock rom booted so I'm up and running again thanks for the help everyone.

Your Evo is fine, so relax.
Try toggling off Signature Verification, then flashing your ROM. Also, I recommend Amon Ra over Clockwork because the newer Clockwork will not flash older ZIP files that don't use the newer install scripts. Did you at least make a Nandroid Backup before attempting any of this?

Flashing to Amon RA recovery will be your best bet. Forget about clockwork. The easiest way to flash to Amon Ra would be to use ROM Manager, and select 'flash alternate recovery'. However, you can't get booted up, so that option won't currently work for you. You can download Amon Ra V2.3 in PC36IMG, from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026. You would then place the PC36IMG on the root of your sd card, either using USB MS toggle in recovery, or by removing your sd card from the phone, and using a card reader to put it in your PC and then dropping the file on it. Then put it back in your phone, and boot to the bootloader. It will detect the PC36IMG.zip, and ask you if you want to update. Hit volume up to say yes. It will then flash the new recovery for you. At that point, I'd try wiping again, flashing Calkulin's Format all.zip (attatched), and then try reflashing a ROM. Remember, don't try restoring any previous nandroids made by Clockwork while your using Amon Ra. It will mess stuff up. Good luck.
honestly im not sure if i did i did a back up in the rom manager.. and tried restoring from there but wont do it.. and i believe the toggle is already off

Alright, I'll tell you how to get back to completely stock and then root all over again. It shouldn't take long at all. This is what you do:
1) Download this ZIP, name it "PC36IMG".zip (no quotes) and put it in the root of your memory card. Meaning if your card shows up on your computer as E:\, then put it in E:\ (no folders).
2) Go into Bootloader mode/hboot (Power + Volume Down), and let it find the zip after a few seconds. It'll ask you if you want to apply it. Hit yes. This will take a while and your phone might reboot a few times.
3) When it's done, you're on an unrooted ROM, but still S-OFF. You can do one of two things:
A) Download the latest Unrevoked and run that all over again (takes like 5 minutes).
B) Download Amon_Ra recovery zip (replace the other PC36IMG.zip) and repeat step 2 to flash it. Then flash whatever you want.
That's it. From then on you can flash whatever you want. What kernel were you trying to use btw? HTC 17?

It's alright. After you put the 1st zip (the actual ROM), go into the bootloader (the white screen with the Androids on skateboards). Step 2.

Okay. You're almost there. Now that you have the PC36IMG on your sd card, power the phone off completely. Then hold power and vol+down so that it will put you into the bootloader. Then just wait a few seconds, and the bootloader will scan and find the PC36IMG, then tell you it found an update, and ask you if you want to update. You wll press volume up to say yes to the update. It will then flash the PC36IMG (whether its just the recovery, or if you're unrooting and rerooting using Fred's method, you flash the same way from the bootloader)
sorry, fred already got to ya!

Just to verify, because it needs to be exact. THe file that you put on your sd card, is named exactly like this, correct ? :: PC36IMG :: It must be capitals. Do Not add a :: .zip :: to the end of it, because the phone does that. If you did label it :: PC36IMG.zip, it would really be PC36IMG.zip.zip, which the bootloader won't recognize. so be sure that it is on main root of your sd card, and named properly, then the bootloader should recognize it.

Are you rooted? What recovery do you have? If you are rooted, you may need to reflash a recovery. I suggest amon RA v2.3....Download the PC36IMG.zip from http://files.androidspin.com/downloads.php?dir=amon_ra/RECOVERY/&file=PC36IMG.zip
Afterwards, put it on the root of your SD card. Shutdown your device and re-enter the bootloader screen (press the down volume button while also pressing the power button). The bootloader will AUTOMATICALLY detect the PC36IMG.zip and prompt you to install. Follow the prompt to install. The installation takes less than 10 seconds to complete. Afterwards, reboot into recovery. The name & version of the recovery will be displayed at the bottom of the screen....Take care.

Yeah, but that doesn't mean it is a recovery file. Boot animation screens and the like can also be name PC36IMG.zip. If you're certain that the file you have is indeed a recovery file, then, by all means, use the one you have, but if you're unsure, go with the one I linked and put the other one in a folder.

If you followed my instructions and are now in recovery, then yes, that's it. I mean, unless you're getting ready to flash a new rom, kernel, theme, mod of some sort, you can simply select "reboot" and your phone will reboot and then load into your homescreen.

You are definitely in recovery if you're able to wipe the cache, dalvik & data. Keep in mind that since you are wiping your "data", you will have to re-enter your data when you enter your homescreen. Most people do not wipe their data unless they want to start over or something. Anyway, I'm glad I was able to be of assistance to you. Take care and have a great night....

Okay. It sounds like you were using AutoRoot, I think. So your bootloader shows S off now. Do you have a recovery installed? From the bootloader, select recovery. What happens? Does it successfully boot to recovery, or does it give you a black screen with a triangle and exclamation point? If its the triangle and exclamation point, you don't have recovery, and you need to flash recovery. That's the next step. I'll attatch a PC36IMG of Amon Ra V2.3. Download that file, and put it on the main directory of your sd card. (you may need to put your sd card into a card reader to do this). Once the file is on your sd card, put the card back in, and boot to your bootloader. It should scan the sd card and find the PC36IMG, then ask you to press volume up to update. Do it. When it finishes, choose no to reboot, then select 'recovery' from the bootloader screen. From that point, you should then boot into recovery. If you successfully boot to recovery, you can then do a full wipe and flash a rom. let me know if you don't know how to do that.

That's an outdated method that doesn't work any more, right now you just have old firmware on your phone and that is why it won't let you boot normally. You're going to want to pull the battery and then hold vol down while turning it on to get to the bootloader. From there put it in fastboot mode and flash the 3.70 RUU. That should get you back up and running.
Once that is done there is a sticky in the Q&A section that has links to newer root methods in it.
i had that prob with unrevoked i pulled the battery held the vol. down an power to get the red triangle up restarted unrevoked and it finished it and got me rooted

Save the file on the root of your SD card (not in any folder). Power off your device. Now simultaneously, press the down volume button and the power button until your device starts. When you enter the bootloader screen, there will be a short pause and then several lines of text will scroll across the screen. Afterwards, you will have options o choose. Choose "recovery". You will then boot into your recovery. Once you're in recovery, the menus are pretty self explanatory. There should be a wipe menu or something that pertains to wiping cache, dalvik, factory reset, etcetera. Basically, wipe everything in the menu except he SD card itself. Now go to the flash menu or something that pertains to flashing a zip. Select it and then select to flash the RUU rom file you just downloaded. Be patient. When it is complete, you should be given an option to reboot. Select reboot and wait until you device finish booting.

trying to figure out flash recovery?

I am trying to root my EVO. I once had it rooted and unrooted it...i think...with unrEVOked. I wanted to root the phone and install a custom rom again but I cant seem to get it to root.
I have tried unrEVOked(and followed all the easy steps to root on a forum....more then once), and once I got the initial screen were it sais to plug the phone in and make sure it has USBdebugging on, I do just that and nothing happens. so....
I tried to use Simple Root .1. Once again, found a forum on how to root with this program and followed the steps...more then once...and still no luck. With Simple Root I watched a video and in the video the prompt screen said that it was pushing a file to the phone and then it is suppose to go to the HBOOT screen....which does not happen on my phone, it skips that step and tells me to go to step 2, but I haven't completed step 1 yet....
------So that problem might not be a problem. I guess I AM still rooted. HBOOT screen sais S-OFF, but i dont have unrevoked on the phone anymore. I was told in another thread that I am still rooted and i need to find a flash recovery because when i go into recovery from HBOOT sceen it gives me a !red triangle!
So i guess my question is how do I go about getting a flash recovery and what do I have to do to acutally use that recovery instead of the stock recovery??
Also i was thinking about using the ROM "EVO ZONE" Any thoughts on that ROM??
Thanks!
dizl.evo
Im guessing you have the latest OTA? If so, you cannot root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1176695
This is what i have figured out already.....
I also was doing a little poking around and figured out that i did not have a PC36IMG.zip on my SDcard. I just put it on my card and started HBOOT and now it is asking me if i want to start an update....yes or no?
If that is the recovery zip, then yes let it update
We're comin from a pure power source.
ok, after i do that will i still need to flash recover? or will i be able to find the custom rom then??
And does anybody know anything about the EVO Zone rom?
durring the update it has 11 things that it tries to update....all of them seem to update fine with the exception of number 8 and 9. both are labeled "TP". The first one does nothing and the second one sais it is bypassed. I've tried twice and it keeps bypassing. Is that suppose to happen??
BUMP...Does anybody know if there is anything i can do??
Thanks..
You probably ran a PC36IMG of an RUU or something other than a recovery. You can download Amon Ra recovery from my dropbox here: http://db.tt/WP0beNa
It's named properly, just delete the other PC36IMG from your SD card and replace it with this one. Run it through the bootloader the same way that you ran the other one. When it finishes, decline the prompt to reboot and select recovery from the list. You should see the white splashscreen then boot into Amon Ra 2.3.
As for the rom, I'm not familiar with it. If I were you, I'd flash a popular rom that you know is reliable. If you use the default Sense launcher, be sure to flash a Sense rom.
(from... Evo/MIUI/Tapatalk)
I'll try to break this down for you as easily as possible.
1) s-off allows you to flash a custom recovery for installing roms. It means signature off which is to say you can install roms that have not been signed by HTC. This ability is critical to flashing and you're on the right track if you have it.
2) Currently your phone has no custom recovery on it, that's the red triangle bit. In order to get one on there, search the development section for the Amon_Ra recovery and download the PC36IMG.zip. Copy the zip to the main part of your SD card, then reboot and hold the volume key after the screen goes black. Your bootloader (the screen that tells you s-off or on) will automatically read and try to install the file.
Hit volume up for yes, let it do its thing then volume up again to reboot.
3) Hold volume down while rebooting to get into recovery. From here, go to usb mode. Copy your sdcard contents to your hard drive. Then turn off usb mode, go to wipe, and wipe it all 3 times. Go back to usb mode.
4) copy the Rom you want to flash to the sdcard and turn off usb mode again. Go into flash from zip, find your Rom and tell it to flash. Once this is complete, reboot and enjoy the new Rom.
Hope this helps you out.

You have to flash a custom recovery either clockwork mod or amonra recovery. Then go into recovery and install the superuser.zip. In order to do this you have to be s-off. If you are s-on on 2.3.4 there is no current way to root.
My understanding as well that thre isn't a root for gingerbread.
my Dinc
my phone is currently s-off which is good.
That's good then, all you need to do (like a previous poster said) is flash a custom recovery, then flash the superuser zip in that recovery. The easiest way to do this is using rom manager, it's pretty self explanatory. Alternately, you can flash the recovery of your choice in hboot, www.dougpiston.com has recoveries available for download. Then find the superuser zip and "install from SD card" in recovery.

You mean ... there isn't a root for gingerbread ON for HTC phones. The droids are rooted just fine (my wife has a Droid 2 Global with the OTA installed) through a one click for Windows and Linux (Z4ROOT doesn't work anymore though).

i downloaded the clockworkmod from www clockworkmod dot com under recovery images. Where do i put that file now?
I used unrevoked the last time i rooted so this way is totally new for me.
i appreciate all your help
There's root/S-OFF for other HTC phones on gingerbread. Look at the unrevoked/revolutionary site. Evo 3D, incredible 2, sensation, are a few HTC phones on gingerbread that can be S-OFFed.

I'm assuming that it's a zip file that you downloaded? It's most likely meant to be flashed in hboot. Rename the file exactly to PB31IMG.zip and put it on the root of your SD card (not in any folders). To get in to hboot, power the phone off completely, then hold power and volume down. You'll be taken to the hboot screen and it will automatically look for the PB31IMG.zip and ask you to update. Press volume up to confirm.
the file that was downloaded is: recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-inc.img

when i get a few minutes, ill type all the steps ive currently taken and see where the problem lies.
Oh, that's an .img file, I'm not sure what you'd do with that without a custom recovery already. I'd recommend downloading a recovery from www.dougpiston.com or use rom manager.
when i first installed gingerbread onto my device last nice, i downloaded a file that i had to change to PB31IMG.zip. So when i go into my CD card there is a folder called clockworkmod.
In the folder there are 2 files: .settings and .settings 2
Somewhere along the line i think something got screwed up and id like to start from scratch. Would you be willing to walk with me through this thing lol. Youve been such a great help so far. Please let me know. I live in california and im off work at 6 so ill be doing this after work so i dont have to hide the screen every two seconds lol.
Would you take the challange to help me?
Thank you
It sounds like you installed rom manager maybe, or a custom recovery since you have the clockworkmod folder on your SD card. What was the PB31IMG that you tried previously?
Let me know, and I'll subscribe to this thread so I'm notified of new posts, or feel free to pm me. I'm not sure exactly what I'll be up to later but I'll try to respond ASAP. Maybe continue posting in this thread so other people can chime in and help too.

Ok first uninstall rom manager and the superuser app if you have it installed and delete any PB31IMG.zips that are on the root of your sd card. Then download cwm recovery here http://dinc.does-it.net/PB31IMG.zip, place it on the root of your sd (not in any folders). Then download the superuser binary from here http://dinc.does-it.net/su.zip and place it on the root of your sd. Then go to menu, settings, manage applications and make sure fast boot is unchecked. Power off the phone and then boot into hboot by holding vol down and power at the same time. Once in hboot it will automaticly find the recovery and prompt you to press vol up to install. Once installed it will prompt to reboot hit vol down and you will go back to the main hboot screen. Then vol down to recovery and hit the power button. Once in recovery select install zip from sd card and then select the su.zip. It will ask you to confirm select yes. Once installed select reboot phone. Once the phone boots up go to the market and get the superuser app to keep su up to date and allow programs superuser permissions. Install that and then download rom manager from the market so you can keep recovery up to date and make backups. Thats it you should now be rooted.
should i check USB debugging? before i do this?
