[Q] less MB after restoring a CWM backup - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I noticed something when restoring a Nandroid Backup with CWM 2.5.1.3:
1. I have 870MB left on the internal memory
2. I make a Nandroid backup and flash something else
3. then I make a full wipe and restore the Nandroid Backup
4. I have 820MB left on the internal memory
Did anyone else noticed this problem??
Does anyone know if this problem is gone with CWM 3.0.0.6/3.0.2.5 ????
Thank you very much

Hi lilil
The CWM 2.51.3 and 3.0.0.6 has nothing to do with "consuming" memory.
After you restore back the back-up, do you delete the back-up? Cause the back-up will obviously eat space.
Unless you delete that back-up, it will definitely takes up memories. You can check whether you have any back-ups left in ROM Manager itself.
Tap ROM Manager >> Manage and Restore Back-ups >> Hold the Back-up(if any) and tap delete
Cheers =)

But aren't the backups on the SD card ????

Backups are indeed on the sdcard. Would kinda defeat the point otherwise.

[Q] Does nandroid backup sdcard?

Does the nandroid backup also backup sdcard.
I am about to format my sd card and I already saved what matters like photos and nandroid backups, but im wondering if anything goes wrong will the nandroid backup fix the problem or do I have to backup to my pc (which sadly doesnt have the space)
Nope, just the phone. If you app2sd then it will back up the ext partition that the apps are on but that about as good as it gets.
You could always back it up to a usb drive or dvd-rw if you have them.

Quick Question about TWRP?

OK, so backing up my current ROM, takes up alot of memory. I believe you don't have to backup
System
Data
Boot
Recovery
Cache
flexrom (another option to back up even tho i'm not using flexrom at the moment...kinda weird)
Isn't there only 3 of the above you only need to back up technically??
And is there anyway to automatically back up to my external sd card?
and restore from my external sd card?
Cause my internal memory is completely full, mostly from twrp backups it seems like
P.S. in the back up option why does it give me an option for flexrom? and i remember one time it was like over 1000 mb or something, now its only 4mb (currently on aokp)

For a minimal backup to restore you need system and data. Those are the big ones but also the two you need to restore at minimum. If you don't care about settings and apps backup only system.
I suggest at least one backup with recovery and boot just in case something goes wrong with either one.
Cache isn't needed as you should wipe it before booting a restore anyways.
In twrp go to mounts and check use external SD, it will stay that way unless you change recoveries or wipe cache.
I never backup flex unless its an Acer based rom.
You can also move the twrp folder to external SD and your current backups will be available when you switch twrp to external, and you can delete any unneeded backups.

Not able to restore my nandroids properly anymore

So here's my problem guys (bear with me here ! , it takes a lil explanation ) :
i've had my arc for almost a year now, i'm using link2sd with a 2nd partition on my sdcard for linking my apps to help free up some internal memory , i also use CWM "back and restore" frequently and this is how i do it :
as a full nandroid backup would take nearly 1Gb of storage , i instead backup only the system and data files(less than 400Mb), manually calculate the md5sum for it, and then resore it when i need , and it has worked for me till recently , now when i restore the backup, i only get the system settings and the apps on my internal storage, no sdcard apps and no linked apps (previously it restored everything properly) , so my question is :
is it a Rom or kernel related issue ??. is there a way to fix it ?? or do i have to do a full backup from now on ??
btw i'm currently using JJ'Hybrid and arknight kernel 3.3 RC.
i know it's a long one guys , so thanx in advance .
You'll need to backup data from sd or sd-ext, which would need a full nandroid backup. I found the best compromise to save space is to backup, rename the backup to id it(eg aokp4),copy it to my pc, and only keep the newest one on my sd card.

Can't mount /data through recovery

Title says it all, I've on twrp recovery right now. I tried cwm before since i was having that problem. First time with Samsung any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Edit: I believe one the phone is encrypted, the data can't be mounted to security purposes.

Same problem
I have the same problem. My device's (Samsung GS III VZW) internal storage is encrypted as well. Does this seem like this could be what's causing this?
I want to make sure that my backups are good that I'm taking with nandroid in CWM 6.0.1.2. If I choose straight up Backup & Restore -> Backup from the menu then I get an error:
Can't mount backup path.
If I choose Backup & Restore -> Backup to external sdcard, then it chugs along for about 30 seconds, then gives this error:
Backing up data...
Can't mount /data!
However, my backups that are put on the External SD Card (extsdcard/clockworkmod/backup/<datedfolder>) only consist of 3 files, boot.img (10mb), recovery.img (10mb) and system.ext4.dup (317kb). This doesn't seem right..
Any thoughts? Does this seem like it could be caused by the device being encrypted ?
Thanks! I'm a real noob and really appreciate the help!

Ya I say definitely stay away from encryption if your gonna flash roms. I've been here before backup what you need and wipe data in recovery. If it doesn't work flash the stock jb rom thatll wipe it.(located here if needed http://www.mediafire.com/?c3cj6udkai1ljhk ). As far as the backups go I believe that's actually the right size. Cwm uses a weird format for its backups now. Granted if data can't be mounted I think those backups are worthless now anyway

[Q] [Solved] Unable to write on internal memory card (not a joke please really help)

Hi all,
I have a big problem, i promised i searched before nut i didn't find anything useful about it.
I installed the Ditto Note 3 v5 on my device, and everything was fine, but after I installed agni kernel, the system went crazy, i did follow the exact procedure, or if i made a mistake i didn't on purpose.
Whatever i had a nandroid backup before installing agni kernel, but now i found my device impossible to write on internal storage, meanwhile the external is fine I can do anything i wish, but the the internal storage no way to create even a folder or a simple file.
I have done that with TWRP 2.7.0.2 as a recovery, and I am really in deeply **** (sorry for the word), because I heavily use my device in my work, I am a "soccorritore", that means like paramedic in USA in ambulance, so it is really the truth i am in deeply ****, because I have all my documents in the internal storage in the nandroid backup, but i don't know how to restore them.
The nandroid backup is 4.58GB, but when i install the nandroid backup the internal storage is 7.5GB left, before with all the data was 5.8GB left in internale storage, so it is missing 1.7GB of data.
PLEASE!
I really need help and as soon as possible, I do not care about myself but documents and people schedules
Hi there, I've also restored one time my Rom through TWRP and couldn't write on the internal Storage anymore. TWRP has a problem with that, use Philz Recovery in future.
So, do you have your documents etc. in some Apps saved or in your internal Storage?
Yes, i do have documents in backup data. The problem is not the rom, in worst cases I reinstall again a new one, but what about the documents?

Well like I said/asked, if your documents are in some Apps, backup them using Titanium Backup on your SD Card. If your files are on the internal storage, you can simply flash a Firmware through Odin and nothing should happen to your data. Or just connect your device to your PC and copy all your files over to your PC.

The problem are not the backup applications, but the documents as I said, they are not in an application, they are in the nandroid backup created from TWRP recovery and the nandroid backup is an md5 format.
You are telling me that titanium backup can restore nandroid backups?
I even thought to use odin, if it can be useful.
No Titanium Backup can't restore backups, it just backups all your apps + data.
A Recovery doesn't backup your whole Internal Storage, it just backups your System Partition etc.
So my thought were, just flash a Firmware through Odin and everything should be alright I guess.
Oh man! I love you
I still like women but I think you know what I mean, I used odin and I restored the entire backup to the device, but still not able to write on the internal storage, but who cares I reflash e new rom, the most important is i can transfer the documents and the data to the external storage and to a computer. I learned a lesson today, I can't describe how do I feel now, and there are no words to describe how much I thank you
