Hey, i have a UK htc desire branded to the Orange network and i've spent all week reading and reading about how to root and unbrand it. I feel i've learnt most of the ins and outs of it and want to finally attempt it, but i was wondering if just to put my mind at rest someone could give me a thumbs up to what i think needs to be done?
First off my phone details as of now..

The UK network Orange doesn't have a provider RUU, i'm not bothered about being in warranty as i got this phone second hand but if for some reason i wanted to unroot etc can someone point me to a similar unbranded stock one that has the same versions of things as above? That seems to be the main thing worrying me at the moment.
So to check i have everything understood..
1.I've installed HTC Sync and uninstalled just the Sync part leaving the drivers, downloaded Unrevoked which i intend to run to root the phone.
2.I've made a bootable USB drive with Alpharev on ready to then sort out S-OFF
3.Will partition my sd card with Gparted, ready to then make a backup of the stock ROM on the phone right now
4.Then install my custom ROM which for my first try i've chosen LeeDroid. However, if i wanted to just put a plain unbranded stock ROM on which would i be looking for?
I'm hoping i've not taken all the information in over the week and come to the wrong conclusion, so just an 'all clear' from someone would be great, thanks
Yeo that's what I did unrevoked phone, s-off then copyed rom I like to memory card and flashed via recovery. And yes lee tom should be good they always are, not using it at mo I'm on miui

Being a total n00b to Android, I have been doing battle with two since Monday last week. with the HTC, I decided to go with unrevoked and to my consternation found that I couldnt get s-off, and so I was unable to debrand or uninstall the apps I had on board. I had already installed Rom Explorer (free) and wondered if I might be able to use that. I crossed my fingers, and did a backup and wipe and clean cache, along with an install of CyanogenMod 7. I must say I am very impressed with the work gone into these mods. Everything you need and nothing you don't. The install went swimmingly and my fingers are now uncrossed. No more Telstra crud.

I just bought Desire. The seller said it was AMOLED version but I think it's SLCD as there seems to have light at the edge and on the box doesn't say anything about AMOLED. Doesn't matter, it is not important.
But, hope someone can help me with these:
1- This unit is bought in Malaysia under original SiS warranty. I know rooting it will void the warranty, what I want to know is can I unroot the phone to its original condition later before I send it for warranty? If yes then where can I read the guide to do this and the method?
2- As I planning to root the phone, does AMOLED or SLCD makes a difference?
3- What is the preferred memory card capacity and speed? I mean, most people said 8gb/16gb class 10 is good but is it necesssary?
Thank you
2- yes! People bricked their phone due to having and slcd version! Check your hboot turn the phone off. Once everything is off press and hold volume down and tap power... wait youll see a menu 2nd line should say. Hboot something like 0.80 etc. Theres some useful threads in the dev section
Cant renenber the number) for me it never made a differance.. class 4 8gb was good enough for me never had to wait fot it load or anything

HBOOT/SLCD is irrelevent as once unrEVOked 3.2.x has been released you can root it with one program...as for going back to stock/unroot yo'll need to see if there's an RUU file of the ROM your Desire comes with.
To check what you're using at the moment (or when the phone arrives) go to Settings>About phone>Software information and post the information here. We can then advise

Thanks for the help guys
Right, it seems you've got the Asian ROM, and there's a FroYo ROM available...
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...00.32U_5.09.05.30_2_release_143921_signed.exe
That should work (if it asks for logins, username/password is shipped)

Thanks for the link. Am I just need to flash this ROM or should I follow the step as stated in the wiki?
So, before I flash my phone, just want to be sure again, how can I save a backup of my current ROM or where can I find a stock ROM in case I needed it later?
I still have 2 years warranty, so my understanding is that if I ever want to claim my warranty, I need to unroot the phone back to stock ROM before sending it over. Correct?
So, rooting the phone is not a problem for warranty right?
Thanks.
No the one Eddy is linking is the original rom. Just the froyo(2.2) version.
If you want to root you should look for a topic on it in the development section.
Btw. I believe the 0.83 hboot means you have got slcd screen please read on for faq about rooting slcd:

Thanks. I have the guide bookmarked earlier and have read it through
I do have my preferred ROM for rooting. But, just want to be confirm that I can still unroot my phone after rooting. right?
One more thing, can someone point me where I can find stock ROM 2.1 Eclair SEA?
Thanks.
I have a non-working phone at the moment.
I unbranded from O2 stock and th phone updated to 2.2 from 2.1 fine.
There was a minor update OTA after that when things starded to go wrong. I had forgotten to put the gold card in before the update and it broke the wifi.
Got a downgrade tool back to HTC 2.1 and it worked ok, I just ignored any updates.
After a couple of months I decided to try updating again and did some research and found a couple of guides. This didn't work though, and now I'm stuck with a 2.2 phone that I can't seem to do anything with.
The downgrade does not work, it now says CID incorrect! Update Fail.
I have tried a couple of different cards in the phone but the phone says there is no card installed. I can't access the card form a PC either via USB. So I can't make a gold card - step 1 in just about every guide I've read.
I have tried Unrevoked and that just hangs or gets so far in and fails depending on the version I use.
The phone when turned on and left to itself reboots occasionally.
I'm also getting 'Process sytem not responding' errors.

Get the stock o2 RUU and flash that (gold card not needed) then root again
I have been thinking about rooting my HTC Desire, but I want to be able to unroot if I need to. Problem is I can only find RUUs for Verizon and I have a U S Cellular phone. Would Verizon's work for USCC?

Ok, you know I hate it when this happens. Was going to reply saying that I had tried the OS RUU I have several times and it never works. I was going to reply saying this but I though 'I'll just have one more go, at least then I can report what the exact error was'.
What do you know, it bloody well worked.
I'm stumped, must have done something different this time that I hadn't every other time.
Just have to remember where I put my backups now.
barfaroo there is now a ruu for the Us Celluar desire. it can be downloaded from the HTC site. I recommen rooting a doing the S-off to it before updating. If you do not.(which im stuck at not) after the update you will nto beable to root, until there is an update for rooting the new froyo for uscc.
Hi there.
First up, apologies if this has been covered elsewhere. I've tried searching and not found anything that I recognise as matching my problem(s).
Problem:
I have a HTC Desire running Cyanogenmod 7 and clockworkmod recovery v2.5.0.7. I've got myself into a confusing situation and don't properly understand how to get back to square one. I would ideally like to return the phone to a standard HTC sense rom and give it to my girlfriend.
- It reboots to the CM7 loading screen when I try to install an app.
- If I try to flash a new rom through Clockworkmod it comes up with a failure message on Clockworkmod recovery.
- When I connect to pc it nothing changes on the phone and HTC sense or Revolutionary cannot detect it.
History:
I got my phone from orange on the day they came out and used a goldcard to flash a standard android build without the orange bloatware. Foolishly, I didn't create a backup of the orange rom. When I installed an OTA uptade it killed wifi, when I installed another stock rom I had to pay to unlock it so I could still use my sim. Eventually I got up to 2.29.405.2, and it kept offering to OTA upgrade me to 2.29.405.5, but didn't complete the install when I tried. I read up on how quick CyanogenMod is, tried following all the instructions and ended up where I am now.
For some reason the forum is blocking me from adding my phone info because it thinks I am posting a link?!
Right, I'll just try to put down all the info I can find....

So far everything has be running well, but I noticed that I couldn't update my OS anymore. As you can see I am still stuck on 2.2.
I tried to get temp root and downloaded VISIONary + but after loading some time, the screen just went dark or it returned to the VISIONary menu but I still didn't have temp root.
Titanium Backup also tells me I don't have root access.
Can somebody please tell me how to revert my phone to stock so that I can upgrade my OS and how can I back up all my apps and data. I really don't wanna lose my contacts and my calendar.
I hope you guys know a way out.
Hi!
Hi,
if you just want to return to stock rom - youll need to use RUU
use the following link:
RUU_Ace_HTC_WWE_1.32.405.6_Radio_12.28b.60.140e_26 .03.02.26_M_release_155891_signed
http://www.multiupload.com/N333WKVW6M
it will return the phone to it's factory state - after that any ROOT access will gone.
I tried System Update after that and it found nothing.
[or] you can also try to downgrade it with stock 1.32 PD98IMG.zip
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
this is what i know - if i'll need to S-ON your phone you can follow this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537
If others know how to return the system update - to fully function - please post.
Well thanks a lot.
Do you know a way how I could backup my data?
For text messages there is a fantastic program called SMS Backup and Restore. Works brilliantly. For everything else you could just mount your SD card and copy it to your computer.
Great advice.
Thanks a lot

Hi,
Please leave feedback if this solution helped you and if the "System Update" returned to Normal.

It has ClockworkMod Recovery running and I was able to take a Nandoid backup, but it's at 2 something, not 5. something like i've seen many people's at.
-----
And here's what internal phone info says on the version currently running:
Android version 2.2
Basebad version same a radio
Kernel: 2.6.32.17
Build Number: 3.26.605.1
------
My understanding is that the first thing I need to do is to unlock the phone by upgrading hboot first. ADB does not generate an unock code at this version I do not think of hboot. However, I've copied the zip file for the newer version of hboot to what I think is the root of my SD card, and I'm still getting no luck, it won't recognize it or flash it.
I see people refer to an RUU, and I'm a complete dummy. Is there another way to upgrade hboot besides the zip file on the root of the SD card? If so, can someone point me to a walk-through that tells me what software to download and exactly what to do? I am sorry to be silly, but I am rather new at this and don't want to break the phone. It's just at an ancient build, and I'd like to upgrade it to the Touch of Blue custom ROM, or to the newest Stock rom.
---------
Edit to add: Found the executable RUU, finally, for 1.2, and got it unlocked. Woot!
Still getting eerrors attempting to install Touch of Blue (set_paras, some things cannot be changed, error 7 or something like that). I at least want to get it updated to the newest stock ROM, so I think I can manage that, and if I can't, I'll re-edit.
I promise I worked on this all night last night before posting a question... hehehehe. I also updated Clockwork Recovery to 5.0.2.0.
