Rooted but still have S-On, Can I flash cm7? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I rooted a friends Incredible with ClockWorkMod a while back, he had gotten the Froyo OTA and the other update a few months later (was 17mb or so) and I went to root it then. I noticed he had S-On still even though he got the Superuser and I was able to do things like remove stock apps and other stuff that requires root. I rooted mine only after receiving froyo and I did get S-Off and successfully installed cm7! Will I be able to install cm7 on my friends phone? If not what can I do to install it? Will I have to unroot and root again? Can anyone provide me with the best explanation on how to get cm7 on his phone? Thank you.

Or you could easily get S-OFF by flashing it in CWM.

[Q] Unroot Desire Z & flashing back to original ROM

dear fellow G2 users,
seek your patience & expertise to guide me on unrooting (i think i rooted?) my Desire Z, & reverting to my original ROM. have tried search Google & XDA, but got no clues where to pick up.
basically, my "rooting" involves installing the Superuser.apk (if you call that rooting). ROM is still original, & the only non-official stuff i installed was ClockModRecovery.
purpose to unroot is for my phone to receive the official HTC update.
would very much appreciate if the community here can point me in the right direction or guide me step-by-step.
thank you in advance.
What method did you do to gain root? If you want try one of the custom roms? There is rooted roms that are updated to current and are close if not fully stock jus difference they have root privilages
I don't think you are rooted. If rooting is as easy as installing Superuser.apk we won't be hearing about phones that are unrootable.
Install 'Root Checker' from Market to verify if you're indeed rooted, which I doubt considering the steps you've taken to root.

Yeah, pretty sure your not rooted if that's all you have done

thanks fer the replies! much appreciate.
ok the root checker works both ways:
1) if i grant Root Checker access under Superuser.apk to verify if i'm rooted, it says yes i'm rooted.
2) if i deny Superuser access, it says not rooted.
how do i proceed on from here?
thanks fer your patience once again!
So you just installed superuser, and then you where able to grant superuser permissions and flash a rom with clockworks? Did you buy your phone used by any chance? Cuz it boggles my mind how you could do that without a proper rooting
Sent from my 'SilverBullet' HTCDesireZ running CM7
hey there delirious,
i got it as a used phone with superuser installed by the previous owner. but that's about what he did.
the rom is still original, neither custom nor modified.
the clockwork is just the clockworkrecovery only.
Well if you never rooted in the regular way, then it just doesn't seem possible that you have root. If you where to uninstall cloockworks and superuser than your phone should be the same as before you installed them. You could do a factory reset after uninstallng, then do a root check. After all that, you can feel same updating. Unless you have removed some system files. But I don't think you can do that without s-off
Sent from my 'SilverBullet' HTCDesireZ running CM7
But you should double check with the seller, just to make sure he didn't do anything else
Sent from my 'SilverBullet' HTCDesireZ running CM7
Edit: what does your phone say when you boot into recovery?
i tried factory reset, the superuser still exists, so do the clockworkrecovery. this is what is preventing me from receiving the official updates.
it says clockworkmod recovery?
Okay, you have to be rooted some way. Talk to the seller and see what he did. And in recovery, do you have s-off, or s-on?
Sent from my 'SilverBullet' HTCDesireZ running CM7
The more I think about this the more it seems your phone has had the visionary app's perm root option used on it. I have to stress that this app is not the most stable when it comes to perm root, and there has been lots of phones bricked from it, that might be why the seller neglectedto meantion it. I used it back when I first rooted and your phone sounds just like mine was. Superuser permissions but no s-off.

ok i screwed up & did a dumb move.
i followed this guide: www[dot]addictivetips[dot]com/mobile/how-to-unroot-t-mobile-g2-htc-desire-z-complete-guide/
it installs the stock_rom half & says failed due to file error.
upon reboot, it shows the T-Mobile G2 logo & stock Android.
where can i find the official stock ROM for Desire Z Asia?
i found this webbie: shipped-roms[dot]com/index[dot]php?category=android&model=Vision
but not sure which is the rom to pick.
alternatively, since i'm pretty much stuck in T-mobile now, could you guide me through on flashing one of the custom ROMs instead? or stock rom, whichever is easier.
much appreciate!
I need to know if you have s-off before I will try to walk you through any rom flashing
Sent from my 'SilverBullet' HTCDesireZ running CM7
Oh, and I have no clue where to find the desire z Asia stock rom.sorry
Sent from my 'SilverBullet' HTCDesireZ running CM7
no worries, you are willing to guide me through custom rom flashing that's good enough =D
ok using the T-mobile G2 bootloader, it brings me to this. first line:
Vision PVT Ship S-Off
Hboot-0.85.0005
Microp-0425
Radio-26.03.02.26_M
eMMC-Boot
will this help to tell you if i have S-OFF?
Yes, s-off means everything! It also means whoever sold you the phone lied to you... but that's okay, rooted phones are better but anyways, what kind of rom do you want to install? Take a look through the development section for the g2/desirez to get a idea of what's available. I would personally recommend cyanogenmod7. But it's personal preference really.

Pick the one that says "Asia", then HK = Hong Kong, TW = Taiwan, India = you can figure that out. Other Asian countries is WWE (worldwide English). As far as the version, 1.34, 1.82, etc. The higher numbers are more recent. But anything above 1.34 is not rootable.
But if you flash any of the official ROMs, you will lose root. ROM versions 1.34 or lower can be re-rooted.
If you only intent is to get the Gingerbread OTA, I'd say don't bother going back to stock. The OTA will be posted here when its released. And probably in a pre-rooted form soon after.
If you want a custom ROM, it depends on what you are looking for interface-wise (Sense, AOSP, MIUI), Froyo vs. Gingerbread, etc.
If you want a custom ROM similar to stock Sense, then Virtuous is the way to go. Its based on the Sense Froyo 1.85 ROM, but rooted, overclocked to 1 GHz (with other options available), and a few other cool options. But mostly stock beyond that.
thanks Delirious and redpoint for your valued inputs!
redpoint: ah, didn't know stock rom has so much limitations nowadays. wanted the original ROM so that i can update my phone. since can't root now, might as well go fer custom.
Delirious: sure, i go with Cyanogen. kindly walk me through it. much appreciate!
a problem i noted though with the T-Mobile G2 (it was originally a Desire Z), i can't access my 3G or Wi-Fi. so downloading apps are out of the question.
i do have clockworkmod already installed if that helps, but its not the latest version.
just an update, i managed to switch back to Desire Z using someone's Nandroid backup.
its still rooted, thought can you tell me how to check for the s-off thingy?
so i think i'm all set for flashing to Cyanogen (i think).

S-OFF still showing after OTA?

My wife got her replacement Inc2 today after the one she got last week just died. She was on Froyo so I might of.. swapped her phones.. anyways, I rooted, went to the bathroom and the stupid ota ran I guess because when I came back the phone was on GB 2.3.3 however my boot screen shows S-OFF. Can anyone help me to verify that S-OFF is indeed still off. I can post any screen shots etc.. I am still a noob when it comes to the Inc2.
If your boot screen says S-Off, you are S-Off

Did you flash clockworkmod recovery when you rooted? I didn't think the OTA would take if you had a custom recovery. In any event, since you're still s-off, you're fine.
I actually hadn't flashed recovery yet. Went ahead and flashed recovery. Superuser installed but busybox keeps failing. I am manually installing them since the patch I found also includes a rooted kernel but it is for Froyo.
The biggest deal for me is I am still S-OFF. I'm just confused as to how I managed to remain S-OFF after the OTA went through. If I can't get busybox installed I'll probably install Ginger Sense to obtain it.

Alpharev changed ur hboot to a higer version than the one in the OTA.. this is why it kept you S-OFF.. if I'm wrong someone correct me.
So basically I just got really lucky and kept my S-OFF even though the OTA went through.

No. stock hboot is .97. alpharev bumped you up to 1.something.. idk I used XTC clip.. since your hboot is newer than the OTA.. it keeps you S-OFF, pretty smart by alpha.
So does this open a gateway to first root in Froyo and then go gingerbread and retain the root?
Only way to be able to tell is to have someone repeat my steps which were: stock froyo, run AlphaRevX, did not flash recovery, Run OTA (this happened by accident I did not intend for the OTA to go through) after the OTA is finished reboot and if it is indeed a "gateway" then S-OFF would still be on. (After seeing S-OFF was on (and making sure it was okay) I went ahead and installed cwm recovery at that point)
Now when I use the term "gateway" I say this loosely because it doesn't fix anything for anyone who is already on GB. If indeed this works, it would only work for a small percentage who get Froyo and don't flash clockwork before running the OTA.
I just got my Inc2 as a replacement for my fascinate, came with 2.1 might try your steps and see if my root will stay after doing the OTA

I've been wondering about this. I got my Dinc2 early July and I'm still on stock, unrooted Froyo. Somehow the OTA update to GB hasn't hit yet. Could I run ApharevX to get S-off and stop there for now? I am happy with bloated stock for the time being and want to be able to receive OTA updates, but would like to have the option down the road to add Clockworkmod and flash custom ROMs. From kujayhawks experience it seems that this should be possible.
Basically, if I achieve S-off with AlpharevX now, will I be able to pretty much do anything later?
P.S. First post, though I've been lurking around for a while. Great forum/community.

It appears from reports that S-off stays after the OTA to 2.3, so yea, that would seem to be the case.
If you turn S-off with AlphaRev, you might want to just go ahead and install Clockwork recovery at the same time. Doing so won't root or install SuperUser or anything, but you would be able to then backup your phone and be ready to flash if you wanted.
If you install clockwork recovery you won't be able to receive OTAs though, just keep that in mind. You can flash back to the stock recovery, but unless you are familiar with ADB, it won't necessarily be an easy process.

Rooted 2.2 then OTA update to 2.3... half root?

Hi,
I rooted my phone with Unrevoked when it was at 2.2 froyo. When the gingerbread OTA came around I was cautious about me being rooted and accepting a OTA update. I searched all around saying it wouldn't do anything, this will happen, etc.... When I first updated it everything was fine...Until I used one of my root apps. OK fine I'm not rooted. But when i used this app called the blizzard authenticator it would say i have a rooted phone. So is my phone half rooted? If its possible, I would like to go back to the day that i first bought the phone and restart everything. I can provide further details about my phone if asked.
S-off
HBoot 2.16.0001
Thanks!
I don't quite get what you want.
But if you just want to go back like it was out of the box, hop over the development forum and grab an RUU and return to stock.
here is a link, pick one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884060
Oh ya i forgot. Im a n00b. So get the RUU and hope for the best?
Yep, it will erase everything (not SDCARD) and you will be back like the day it came out of the box.
Alright my noobness is kicking in haha. I see like 15 of them. [ROM] RUU SuperSonic EvO 3.70.651.1 OTA - Stock - Sense - Deodexed & Odexed Version originally posted by teshxx would be the one?
Nevermind i didnt even see ur link. Thanks so much ill post the results

If you used Unrevoked and got s-off, and then ran the ota update, to get your full root back you just need to flash either Amon ra or Clockworkmod recovery and make sure the superuser app is up to date.
Ok everything went well with the RUU. How do i know for sure this is stock 2.3 no root. Say i were to bring my evo into the sprint store for repair would they find out that i was rooted before?
before u run a ruu or pc36img u need to flash the s-on tool from unrevoked. since ur hboot is 2.16 now u have to run the 4.24 ruu or pc36img. if u do flash s-on tool and 4.24 ruu, u will NOT be able to root again as of now b/c no root method has been developed yet!! you have been warned

when u boot into bootloader does it say S-ON or S-OFF???? s-off means it has been rooted
S-Off. I might want to root in the future when there has been a root developed tho. For right now i want to go back to being non rooted.
ok...since ur s-off u can flash a recovery (clockwork or amon) from the bootloader and then start flashing roms again at anytime now. If ur trying to take ur phone to the store i dont think being s-off will really matter. As long as u have deleted any apps or files from ur sd card that are root give aways u can just play dumb at store like "uh idk maybe it came that way".
Ok so besides the fact that the S-Off Im all set? Or am i still half rooted?
u should be set

[Q] Help, please. Need to Root 2.3.4 DINC

Ok, a few users here have offered advice/assistance, but I fear this problem has been forgotten.
I am stuck with an S-ON, 2.3.4 Droid Incredible, and am looking for a way to acquire root again.
This happened a few weeks ago, with the leak of the 2.3.4 OTA. Flashed S-ON via CWM (not aware I would permanently lose Root), then flashed the OTA as PB31IMG.zip in HBOOT.
Now, Unrevoked no longer roots the device. HBOOT will not allow downgrading to a 2.2 IMG, nor will it flash any downgraded Radio/HBOOT versions. I've tried them all from Dougpiston.com, even the signed ones.
I've attempted to contact the folks at Unrevoked about this issue on IRC, but I can't ever get a reliable dialogue going with anyone, and I believe they are busy working on Revolution, for Incredible 2/S & Newer devices.
Throwing my hands up, I even called Verizon, gave them an excuse to send me a replacement, just so I could start fresh with a 2.2 phone, but I am out of warranty.
I really want to enjoy Sense 3.0/MIUI, even Cyanogenmod, but the outlook is not so good.
Is there any solution I haven't tried yet? Please help.
Unless Unrevoked or someone else finds a new root method you're pretty much out of luck.
Sent from my Droid Incredible 3D using XDA App
Yep, same situation here, nothing will re-root if you did the GB OTA with S-ON bootloader. just have to wait and see if somebody comes up with something new or Unrevoked comes up with a new method.
EDIT: and I'm willing to bet if you get one from Verizon it might already be 2.3.4

That's most likely true. 2.3.4 is being pushed out to the Incredible now, so they would probably run the newest RUU on their Incredible devices.
I feel your pain deadsoulboy, and I've seen your posts lamenting your situation on other threads. Only solace I can offer you is that generally the source code and RUU are made available within 30 days of the OTA, at which point the developers are completely free to tear into them with reckless abandon and hopefully the folks at unrevoked figure things out.
It's also distinctly possible that HTC will unlock the bootloader the way it has with others of its handsets, in which case you'll be back in business.
Until then, my friend, I believe you are rootless.
i have the same problem. its been a couple months.... am i still hosed?
Have you tried this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1306400
I used Scotty1223's instructions a few weeks ago and it worked like a charm.
So I burnt out my Cpu on my original rooted Dinc and got a replacement however after playing around on my replacement Dinc verizon pushed the update to 2.3.4 onto my phone. I would've stopped it but I figured I would just downgrade and root again however the new HBOOT 92 didn't let me downgrade i tried the unrevoked method anyway and i got a custom recovery so i restored MIUI on my current Dinc however i seem to still be unrooted? for example Titanium Backup can't delete system apps. i still have S-on and the new HBOOT 92 however i also have a mac so i am a little stuck and confused on how to regain full root access with s-off again any hep would be greatly appreciated.

I'm presuming the gingerbread update reset your recovery to stock. First of all, unrevoked doesn't work on the gingerbread OTA that you received. However, if you're S-OFF you're still in luck. First check if you are. Go to HBOOT and at the top next to the HBOOT version it will either say S-OFF or S-ON. If you rooted with a recent version of unrevoked you should be S-OFF unless you manually flashed S-ON. Then read through the site below
http://pvillecomp.com
It willl instruct you how to boot into HBOOT and flash an image to get clockworkmod back. Then you should be able to flash a custom recovery again or superuser to get root back. I don't know offhand about the superuser flashing but if you flash wildstang's OTA ROM you will have root again.
