Hey all,
Im in the military and just got back stateside. Before I left i rooted my phone. Im currently on a DK28 build with Epic Experience Rom.
My question is now my phone prompts me 50 times a day to download this new EC05 build OTA from sprint. Is it safe to accept the update currently rooted or do i need to go back to something else?
Apologize is this has been covered. I havent been able to keep up with the scene.
Not safe to accept EC05 as far as I'm aware you must be on BONE stock DI18 or EB13 to update to EC05.
Thats what i was thinking.......thanks for the info

Ok, I'm probably going to get flamed for this but...
I've been keeping up with the thread joeykrim started about how to gain root with the new v1.47.651.1 update. Then I saw the newest thread where they've been able to do it. Yet I've seen a bunch of v1.47.651.1 rooted downloads in the dev subthread, and a week ago or so, I had downloaded the rooted deodexed 1.47 rom, with the new radio, with the plan to flash it over. I was hesitant because I knew people were having problems with the new update. So for now I have Fresh's rom (which btw is awesome).
So I've finally put 2 and 2 together, and this is what I've discovered... Is the new update ITSELF, just the actual FILE, able to be rooted? aka, the update was downloaded to a computer, hacked, and then able to be flashed to a phone with no problems? And that would mean the only problems are for people who applied the OTA update or bought a new evo that already had the 1.47 update, correct?
sorry to be an idiot!
Correct .
Well, wait.lol the Rom you downloaded is basically an stock Rom with update, an entire image that will replace what you have. It is just rooted already.
But you are correct that it is only people who took the ota update or bought a new phone and the salesperson did the upgrade who must use the new method to root.
At least you posted in the right forum so you better not get flamed lol

ok, thanks!
yeah I just have the stock rooted 1.47 rom. I think I'll wait until some dev's get their hands on it and see what they release, before i flash it.
I am running my own variation of the deodex 1.47 that calkuin (sorry for the spelling if its wrong.) So its good to go. But I think there are a few that already have it incorporated such as damage control.
i think i also have that caulkin 1.47 version. do you like it? what kind of things do you like about it over the 1.32.651.6 version?
I just used it as a starting point for my Rom. I just wanted the update so i can actually logon to my WiFi router. The image you have is the stock image, so it still has all the Sprint apps on it and stuff.
I previously rooted using auto-script method (EG30). I flashed a couple ROMs, lost some ****, had some issues, just couldn't get everything figured out like on my OG EVO. Anyways, I un-rooted using auto-script but didn't realize CWM was still installed so when I got the OTA update (EK02) today, it failed. If I re-root, and get the stock recovery back, then un-root, will the update be pushed again?
Or is my only option to flash a rooted version of EK02?
I just don't feel like messing with rooting and rom'ing at this point, just want to be stock and have the OTA pushed/installed via the stock recovery if possible.
I'm not sure if I should test the water but... Having had an Evo as well, everytime I had went back to a stock setup Sprint pused the updates, even so just do a check to the updates. Once Sprint/Google have pushed 100% progress out any phone after that should have no problem updating. Basically if you don't care to flash right now go back to stock out of the box and in any case your gonna get the update. That answer almost seemed to easy, hope it helps.
I suggest reading over FAQ #E12 in the auto root sticky:
e12) I told it to install the EK02 update, but something went wrong, now it won't prompt me again, how do I install EK02?
So...I was going to save my upgrade subsidy for when the Galaxy Nexus or SGS3 hit sprint later in the year but the charger in my Evo died today and it wasn't the known USB port issue (mine had gotten chipped on the little bit of plastic inside where the contact pins are) so they couldn't do a repair or swap for free. Anyway, I had kinda wanted this phone anyway and with discount and selling back my Evo it only cost me like $110 plus tax.
I had hacked and rooted my Evo every which way but I'm now back to being a noob. I got a prompt to update my software on first boot but I don't want to update anything that will make it harder to root or mod later on once I get familiarized with the new handset.
My software version is EG30 right now. Do I want to avoid any ota updates like on most devices? What should my course of action be? I see all of the different builds mentioned on the forums but I'm not sure which ones to go for and which ones to avoid. Do people recommend rooting and flashing a specific build for now? I tend to go stock for a week or so when I get a new phone and then flash a new rom once I know what's available. With the update prompts I might want to jump ahead on that process now.
By the way, my sprint store people were awesome. When they wanted to test my Evo I kinda worried about it being rooted and running cyanogen. I couldn't flash back to stock since it would not charge and I didn't have a spare battery. They just said "well htc supports unlocked bootloaders now so as long as its not a software issue we can try to fix it. If its a software issue we would just need you to flash back to stock". Turned out to be a hardware issue but I must say that was a refreshingly fair attitude. Some places won't even look at a rooted/unlocked phone even if there is no software issue.
I also came from the EVO. I love this phone!!!! Everyone here is very helpful. As far as ROMS go, I would start with Calkins with the Rogue Kernel if you plan on using TW. That is what I am running with the optional ICS theme. Love the way that it looks. I can't say enough about how great this phone is. Great performance and batterylife. I tried the EVO3D for all of 3 days and returned it for this phone. Night and Day difference. Welcome to the E4GT family
I would go take a look at qbkings videos on how to everything. and also sfhubs auto root thread.but it doesn't lock you out of being able to do anything by upgrading like htc does. by the way calkulin has the el29 rooted stock. then after getting that I would odin the el29 modem. el29 is the current update for this phone. welcome to the community tho! happy flashing!

So if I let the OTA update go through I won't be screwing myself over for later in the week when I want to start trying out new roms? Just wanna make sure
On Evo it seemed to mostly consist of getting root, installing custom recovery, then you could try out any new kernel, radio, or rom you wanted. Is it relatively similar on the sgs2? Is there anything I want to avoid now to save on headaches later?
Thanks for the tips and the welcome! Between my girlfriend's brand new iPhone getting stolen on Friday and my charger breaking this weekend it's been a bad phone week for us.
nope. I however wouldn't even deal with the update. I would just odin a kernel then from the recovery you could flash any rom you want to try out. I definitely recommend calkulins 2.8.1 or blu kuban v1.1.2 odexed. they come with kernels already installed. then I would either odin or flash a modem. I used recovery to flash all my stuff. if you want a purely stock rom, then in the dev section calkulin has a stock rooted el29 rom. which is just the rom plus root. remember almmost all roms are flashed through cwm. so definitely odin a kernel first. there is a wiki sticky thread in dev section that has all the stuff. btw with odin make sure to ONLY flash kernels through pda. if you put kernels or roms in phone it Will brick it. also never disconnect your phone while odin is flashing.

also to answer your other question once you get a kernel on your phone you can flash whatever you want. I a tually prefer it to using odin. radio kernel rom. btw unlike htc new recoveries have to be bundled in with kernels. so if you wanted a different recovery like rogue u have to grab a rogue kernel. I love the newest rogue kernel. it has a touch clockwork mod recovery in it. its called rogue "hitman"
Jumping the gun a little, but I want to prepare my data.
Would it be smarter to flash a Stock Gingerbread ROM before receiving the OTA for ICS when the time comes? I still get the stupid EL29 notification. I am not looking to get rid of it.... it just does nothing. But in the future after the OTA for ICS- I want to make sure I don't see this again.
I think its a good question on whether or not the OTA's include enough to jump previous OTA's with that answered ( was thinking something similar the other day) you will know if you need to be on EL29 or not anyways.
To recieve via OTA you should be on a rather stock rom with root being an okay change. But your going to lose root eitherway. Any changes and or coming from a non official rom can result in a disaster.
To go to a rooted ICS you should just ODIN the tar when it becomes available. Same way you would root an EL29 phone since EK02 is the last version that can be zerged. The official updates if not here the day of is usually only a day or two off from being available here in rooted tar form.
So has anyone actually received the ICS update over the air or is everyone just getting it from here? Just asking because me & a couple of my friends have been checking like on the hour for the past few days and haven't gotten the update. They have returned their phones to stock and my wife's E4GT has been stock since day one. She doesn't trust rooting anymore after all the problems we had with the original Epic.
Sent from my EVO using Xparent ICS Tapatalk 2
I didnt bother trying. But friend of mine with the same phone got it on launch day by the time i got the chance to even tell him there was going to be an OTA he laughed and sent me the screen shot of the update message.
I reverted to FF18 to update PRL and Profile and pull a couple APK's now that we know the leak was the OTA and it was back to CM9 for me.
Mind you if your looking to be rooted, the only root method is to flash the FF18 tar (one click of course available) which is going to overwrite the firmware data with the same firmware data so unless you want to test unrooted there isn't much point in wasting time with the OTA. Also keep in mind it has not been found in the available kernel code that FF18 is safe to factory reset, etc on. Might be in compiled binaries like the eMMC driver but not worth the risk. Grab TWRP or Agat's kernel or something if your going custom. A rooted cwm zip is now available in addition to the stock ota update.zip thats on googles servers.
