Going mental total noob. - Defy General

Ok i'm new and these may be stupid questions. Go away now if you're not willing to help!
My Defy is arriving tomorrow, obviously on stock 2.1 moto. I've read and read and read and can't seem to answer my simple question.
All i want is to be able to download and flash an untouched Froyo rom with moto blur. (Yeah i know!) So i can add and remove programs and tweak as i would like. I know i can flash the sbf file but does that leave me unable to downgrade? Do i need a fixed sbf and a nandroid of that stock rom? I'm lost.
I have had three Android phones before, i'm proficient with adb, i'm not scared of messing with system files etc. I'm just new to all the Moto side of it.

Ok i think i figured it out...let me know if these steps are right...
Root.
Install recovery app.
Install recovery and boot into it.
Make nandroid of my own 2.1.
Install nandroid from 3.4.3-11 rom.
Wipe data/cache etc.
Reboot into bootloader and flash fixed 3.4.3-11 sbf.
Let rom boot up and done?
(Re-root etc)
If that's right then it no longer seems so scary now. I'll wait for confirmation first though

Yes that is the right way, but if you want to go back to 2.1 you should have the 2.1 fixed sbf of your carrier

What do you mean by have it? Have it backed up so I can reflash it? Or flash that instead of fixed 3.4.3?

What you have written is the good way of updateing the defy. So you will not loose downgradeability. You can just flash the sbf of your original eclair rom back. So first try to find the right eclair sbf for you, then you will be able to go back to eclair when you want.

That is great thanks so much for the fast responses. I think that was the last thing i needed to know. Finally got my head around this stuff for Defy it really isn't that hard. My Defy should be here within the next 5 hours
Just as they get CM7 working with RIL too...i'm spoilt for choice on rom. Going with the Korean official first and will strip out the bloatware and maybe make some themes for it. Gotta deodex that too i hate that!
EDIT:
Actually there was one last thing...how do i check my sbf version when it arrives? I'll figure it out i'm sure...
EDIT2: Looks like RDS Lite shows device properties i guess it could be here?

Help on rooting back to stock rom

Hey guys, I am rooted and running Virtuous rom and I just wanted to know IF I ever wanted to go back to the stock G2 rom what would I have to do that? Thanks
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
two options:
1. If you were smart, you made a nandroid of your stock ROM the minute you confirmed the root procedure worked. If you did, simply use ROM Manager or boot into recovery, wipe everything, and restore that nandroid.
If you didn't....
2. Download one of the many stock ROMs in the development subforum, and flash that through ROM manager or recovery. Remember to wipe anytime you switch between ROMs (especially Sense-to-stock, or vice versa).
Is there any stock roms on rom manager that I can just do from there?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Nope, just Cyanogen and Virtuous. Just find a stock ROM that you want to use, download the .zip file, and put that on your memory card (don't unzip it, just drop the whole .zip file as-is). Then, in ROM Manager, choose 'Install Zip from SDcard' and navigate to wherever you put that zip file. ROM Manager will give you the option to wipe and to perform a backup of your current ROM before it flashes the new one - choose both options and let it run. super easy.
Alright thanks man

So it's not a stock ROM then ? If someone is looking for a stock ROM, then flashing a custom ROM isn't going to be what they need, surely ? Because they may well not want root either. Often folks ask for a stock ROM because they are doing a warranty return or similar. Or just want to go back completely to how it came from the factory.
That ROM that you linked has also got a modified RAM disk, and is zip-aligned. So it has several changes from a stock ROM.
If you're doing warranty work, that's close enough to stock. I don't thing you can 'unroot' your phone and go back to *totally* stock.

It's very straightforward to remove root, there are several guides on it in the dev section.

That's funny I never saw where he asked for a complete stock, unrooted rom for warranty purposes, guess you should give him the right link then since you seem to know what he REALLY wants. and from his second post by asking if he could find a stock rom on rom manager I would think since rom manager requires root to work, he might be looking for a stock rooted rom.
If you want to correct people please give the right awnser then, in this case give him what he's really looking for, as far as the link I provided it seems the only person not happy with the awnser is someone who didn't even ask the question, so keep up the good job "awnser police".
Just curious how much time did you spend researching that I am wrong instead of giving the OP what YOU THINK is the right link??? Time well spent.
But I guess it seems to happen, instead of awnsers we get posts trying to prove who's MORE right.
Well no hard feelings on my end, hope you have a great day, and happy posting.
@ XXMAGIC MANNXX Heres some more links you can check out from the HTC VISION Wiki, but be careful with these could have undesired effects,

[Q] Help to upgrade to froyo 2.2

Hello all,
Right now i am on 2.1 on my Defy and would like to upgrade to. 2.2 froyo. I am running on tenfars recovery, and i am already rooted, im just not sure how exactly to get 2.2 and i have read all the different ways to do it and its just confusing to me. Plus i still read that there are some bugs still with the camera, flash and market. can someone please throw me in the right direction as to how to do this? Im from Puerto Rico but have US TMo service.
I would appreciate any help. Thanks!!
you have 2 choices
1. you can upgrade using the official 2.2 SBF and customise it yourself
2. use tenfars recovery to flash one of the many backups on this forum. which have already been modified for the better. such as removing the Chinese stuff
Please don't ask questions here. This is the development forum. Let's keep things clean and clear
Jmitch thanx!
And im sorry for asking, but i just needed help. Where would i ask this question.
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App
Ok im a noob here with this... which steps do i need to take exactly? Im afraid to loose my cam flash and 3g...
First flash 2.2 sbf through rsdlite?
Then copy rom on sdcard?
Can i use tenfars recovery or do i need clockworkmod?
Do i need to root again?

[Q] How to install a ROM?

I think this will be my last real "noob" question. I've done some searching, but no real clear answer.
Just how exactly do I install a ROM? I'm thinking of trying both Virtuous and Cyanogen, just want to test them first. And do I still need to use / have the goldcard I initially made to downgrade the firmware, or can I turn that into a "regular" SD card again?
PS - With Virtuous, will using something like LauncherPro slow it down? Or will it not matter?
Thanks again in advance.
EDIT: I also kinda need to update the radio, I have no mobile data on the stock 1.34 radio...lol.
I bet you could of figured this out by googling "how to flash rom on g2/dz" faster than typing this question lol. Get rom manager, flash recovery with rom manager, download rom you want from rom manager, click okay...pretty easy stuff.
Sent from my Vision using XDA Premium App
However sometimes this does not work. A manual install of whatever comes down to downloading and dropping the .zip file of the ROM and whatever Google App pack into your root SD mount. Boot into recovery by Pwr+Vol Down, do a full wipe of both cache and the phone. Then Install Zip from SD card, flash the rom, then the gapps. Reboot.
Yes your back key will function in root.
Edit: When mounting your sd card onto the computer make sure USB debugging is on.
Thanks guys, I did end up figuring it out, now I'm just trying to flash my radio...there's 1 thread with goo dinstructions, but they're still not clear... eugh.
I feel more and more noob with this haha.
Well do a lot of reading before you go and install just any radio.... Make sure they are compatible. I don't want to see your next noob question be "I bricked my phone please help"
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
you will learn by your mistake.
That's how i learn it.
No, I made sure to read everything I could. I just couldn't find any noob friendly radio instructions. I installed Virtuous, just trying to update to the recommended radio. lol
Rmk40 actually just released a program all about radios. Go check it out.

SERIOUSLY, careful. No offense, but if you're not sure on the details of how to flash a ROM, chances are you don't have the knowledge to safely flash your radio.
I feel competent flashing roms, pushing files with adb, and radios still freak me out. If you mess up, there's not turning back =/

I have a ROM flashed now. Just haven't found any real concise instructions on how to flash a radio.
The problem I find with most of these guides is that they say "If you don't know this blah blah google it", rather than explaining the method and how to do it / why it is important.

I think you should get clockwork mod premium and check out the options on there, it will basically download the rom for you and complete all the necessary steps to have a working install. I've been flashing roms since the G1 in 2008 and I still have some small issues here and there when doing it manually but if you want a safe bet, go with the clockwork mod app :]

Radio flashed...still can't use browser though...bleh.
why flash your radio though? I'm using CM7 RC4 with Pershoot kernel en stock radio... reaching up to 30 hours of uptime (with average usage) and good connectivity.

Well...your first mistake was not making a nandroid back up of your stock rom..that would solve this problem quick. As with anything "computer" related always make a back up before changing everything

While this is good advice, it's not really a useful post to respond to this question about. I'm researching the same type of issue for someone and this response has only been useful as an annoyance.

Sao phien ha the
Couple things,
If you install the official OTA update, you will lose root, and will not be able to get it back. Its not currently rootable, and AFAIK, people are having trouble even downgrading from the official Gingerbread OTA in order to root. So bottom line, official GB OTA is a bad idea if you want root.
Second, the official GB update is posted in the Development section, so you don't need to mess with going back to stock in order to get the OTA, if you still want to install the official GB update.
Third, there is a pre-rooted version of the GB update, also in the Development section. So THAT is probably what you really want.
Forth, the RUU you are trying to install is not the stock T-Mobile ROM. Its a stock Desire Z ROM (with Sense). Again, you will lose root if you flash an official ROM, but this one (1.34) is actually rootable. You should still be able to install it anyway, so I'm not sure what the issue is. You're trying to run the RUU from your computer, right? Its not one you flash from ROM Manager.

Help!! Install CM7

hi everyone,
I need advice from you all.
I have a defy an Indian variant.
I have rooted it.
I wish to install cm7 in it.
I read a couple of threads and they say to flash a fixed sbf.
I also read that we can also make fixed sbf's by removing some cg files from them.
I am following this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054447
I learned from the thread to flash a particular sbf but its not of indian variant and fear to loose my gsm from it.
should i myself create fixed sbf of insdian variant and then flash it up.
it advices to flash the fixed sbf which is blurred but the defy in india is blurless.
So im confused.
And one more thing before installing the 2nd init boot do i need to re root the new firmware flashed.
Please help...

nandroid backup as in make a backup or restore a nandroid backup of fixed nordic uploaded somewhere on xda?
Thanks.
If yer on official 2.2 then install custom recovery and update to CM7 without hesitation as you can downgrade any time you want.
