Is there a way to stick mobile data on 3g only? As when i toggle it on oxygen Rom 3g always bumps up to hspda. Or if someone could advise if there is much battery save between 3g and hspda.
Thanks

HSDPA is better than 3G. Why would you want just 3G? I would say there is nothing between them at all so it wouldn't make a difference.
Thanks for the reply. I will stick with hspda, just it flickers alot between the 2 which may cause bat drain

Is anyone else having a problem with the 3g and H "HSDA" signal mines keeps switching between both the 3g and H and when it goes into 3g my internet doesn't work until the little H pops up again "internet pages/videos don't load" I have the signal type switched to wcmda or whatever only but that doesn't seem to help, is anyone else having this problem, please help :-\

I think this is par for the course. On both my G1 and MT3gS, anytime I was running a custom rom, the 3g symbol was there always, but when data would be used, it switched to the H symbol. Has not been a problem for me as of yet though.
Well mine switches from H to 3g when I'm using the internet or watching a video, its kind of anoying when watching videos cuz they stop when this happens, thanks for the reply by the way

Oh, well if you're using data and it is going from H to 3g while actively surfing/streaming, then I don't know what to tell ya. Does this happen only in certain geographic locations? Could be carrier specific...
Yeh it happens almost everywhere but of course less in some places then others.

I have that problem in my house, but nowhere else. Probably signal related. I'll be surfing the web, downloading a file, whatever, and the H will switch back to 3G and the connection will go idle, but I don't think that the idleness is caused by the switch to 3G, I think the switch to 3G is caused by the idleness, and the idleness is caused by weak signal or malfunctioning cell tower. Something like that.
I was thinking the same thing, they told me that they where having issues in many places because they are upgrading or whatever their towers for their new 4& network....

Turn your phone upside down. That way it switches from 3G to H!

hey...
so i've been having this weird behavior where the phone would constantly drop from H to 3g and go back to H even when i would be getting full H signal...
no matter which ROM i flashed the same issue kept happening... same goes for the radio I tried flashing two different radios and the same problem happened ... any body else experiencing something similar?
Yep, I have the same "issue". Its not really an issue since the phone only shows H when its actually transferring data and will show 3G otherwise. I almost don't notice a lag between the switching anymore, if there is any...

Wrong. I have a H (now 4G with tmobile gingerbread leak) always unless I'm in an area that doesn't have 4g. Maybe on custom roms that happens but not on stock froyo that came with it(tmobile g2) and GB leak

Same here. Mine will always show 3G unless I'm transferring data. I don't notice any lag at all, and it's always been like this across different roms. My girlfriends myTouch 3G does the same thing as well so I don't think it's an issue, maybe it's the radio trying to save battery, but I really wouldn't know.

The stock rom will always show H even though it may not be until you start transferring data. Custom roms normally can tell the difference unlike stock is what a few devs have told me about it, so I wouldn't worry

This has been discussed before on the forum and is normal behaviour for the stock DZ rom. I think the conclusion was clever power saving. As HSDPA and HSPA+ are releases of the 3G standard it is normally seamless to go between them so when data is active it will try and go to H while idling at the more power efficient 3G.
This behaviour can be configured which is why some roms show signals differently. The stock behavior of the G2 shows H all the time i think even though its dropping to 3G.

Hi,
I live in a low/no reception area and frequently losing reception around the house. This takes a big bite out of the battery as it keeps trying to find best reception all the time.
Is there a script to "search less often for mobile reception" when there is no reception in the area?
If its any help Im on T-mobile..
Thanks for reading!
I have the same issue. Also on t mobile. Could always try flashing another radio?

So, I read somewhere that 4g is more similar to wifi, indicating that 4g is better for the battery if you have good signal. But I notice the exact opposite, 4g kills my battery whereas 3g isn't SO bad. Can anyone confirm this?

For me it's always been from best to worst
Wifi, 3g, 4g.

I use 4G frequently while at work. I obviously don't use my phone as much while I'm at work as when I'm not, so it's tough for me to get a good comparison.
It does seem to me when downloading bigger items, like ROMs, 4G will take up more battery than 3G even though it will certainly take longer on 3G to accomplish the same thing.
And for what it's worth, I do get a good 4G signal while at work too, so it's not like it's bouncing back and forth between 3/4G.
From my own personal experience;
Wifi>3G>4G

Imho I think it is modem/kernel/ rom related. I certianly think there was a period that wifi was sucking the life from my phone and 4 g was sipping. Presently I think I am doing 3g>wifi>4G...but I have seen this flip arround on diferent versions.

Eclair: wifi > 3g > 4g*
Froyo: 3g > wifi > 4g*
Gingerbread: 3g > wifi > 4g*

Thanks for all the replies (literally). I've seemed to notice exactly what your saying though, I was just wondering because I heard somewhere 4g drains less battery in high signal areas. I usually get 2/3 4g bars, so id say mine is ok, but it definitely drains faster than 3g
sent from my touchwiz 4.5-ed epic
It doesn't make much of a difference for me. Probably though because my school is so close to a 4G tower? I mean I can literally see it.
4G is a seperate radio so would require more power. 3G is tied to the CDMA radio. Wifi uses almost no power when connected. So I get days of standby on weekends at home on wifi.

Funny, my device gets the opposite with 3g vs wifi. My sleep policy is set on 'never', but wifi has drained the hell out of my batter since Froyo. It's nearly as bad of a drain as 4g, when I was in a 4g area to test.
+1 and also since froyo. How I long for the wifi battery sipping days.

4g spectrum runs at a higher frequency rate than 3g. Therefore, 4g will drain ur battery a lot faster, especially if u have weak or weaker signal strength. Wifi, is low aplitude frequency rate, meaning..it an open frequency , therefore, does not require much power for high speed. 3g is moderate frequency rate. Just to clearify..3g and 4g are cdma, depending on carrier. Support information regarding can be allocated at www.phonescoop.com

I have no doubt you are technically accurate and it could be the implementation and how they are managed. If I take a full battery and leave one of these on at a tome...as of stock froyo (I think some roms may have had different results) and all gb 3g certianly is usong about half the battery being used as 4g and wifi consistantly uses more.
Sammy should talk to u guys n get theeir sheit fixed.

it also has to do with power time managment in the kernels. i discovered that between the different kernels i have tried and xda. you just have to play with the different roms and kernels and see which gives you better results.
Ever since I flashed my phone with the wicked rom .. my data has been do constantly switching between 3g and h+... I have my network type set to wcdma only and I have a strong signal but it still drops down to 3g
Before when I was on the stock rom it never did that.. I even had my network type set to wcdma preferred ..
Anyone having the same issue ?

That's completely normal. It only shows h when your data is fully active. Its a good thing. The only difference is now your phone is telling you the truth.

Oh is it normal ? I didn't know since on the stock rom it never did that ,always displayed 4g.
But what would it drop to 3g if I have a strong signal always

Yeah dude. T-Mobile does that they call their hspa+ 4G. Technically anything that is not 3g is considered 4G. The reason you are seeing this on your new rom is because the stock tmobile rom will only display you in 2G or E for edge. Or 4G for 3G and HSPA+ otherwise known as 4G. The majority of customer roms will tell you what you are currently on.
