Help Appreciated - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey XDA, long time admirer first time poster.
I am having a problem. (If this has been mentioned before please feel free to point me in the right direction)
I have my desire rooted a few weeks now using Starburst A2SD+ and have been having no problems everything running perfectly.
Yesterday I wanted to try a new ROM, long story short it didn't work so I went back to my Nand backup.
But since reinstalling the backup it freezes on the HTC quietly brilliant screen, just keeps repeating quietly brilliant. To get around this I had to boot without my sd card in.
So that worked but now when I have the sd card in, my A2SD+ wont work everything has been moved to the internal memory instead of being on the ext like it was.
I have been racking my brain around this and have tried full wipes, restoring different backups and reinstalling the rom. But nothing has worked.
So any help any one can give would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

WEll when using backup, you should always do a Backup+Ext Backup, and then do a re-partitining of the Sdcard the exact same way it was before you started changing rom's etc...
Since you using a Sb rom,i recomend switching to a Standard rom with D2SD,it's better and faster then the A2Sd+...
Do a full wipe ('wipe all' in Ra 2.0.0+) then format and partition the SDcard (via an program fro your pc,NOT the recovery) Fat32+ 512mb (min) Ext3 ... the D2sd needs ext4,but no prob, since the D2sd script will change your ext3 to an ext4.

Stuck on boot (post-A2SD)

Hey,
First, I'd like to thank everyone who's contributed to these forums. I've been visiting often lately and the progress is awesome. And, this is my first post =)
So, I rooted my Desire. Made a nandroid backup using ROM Manager, and started trying different ROMs. I finally decided to go back to the stock ROM, and so restored my backup.
Then I decided to install a2sd. So I booted into AM Recovery, restored factory defaults, and wiped the cache. I then installed the zip from the same menu (r1-a2sd-desire-dalvik-fresh-signed.zip) and proceeded to partitioning. SWAP=0, ext2=384. Then I upgraded(?) ext2 to ext3 (again, from the same recovery menu).
And now, when I reboot my device it gets stuck on the first HTC splash screen. It doesn't even reach the animation. I've heard it takes some time to write caches or something but it's been at least 15 minutes already. Any ideas?
Of course, I know I can always restore my nandroid backup, but I want to get a2sd working.
Ok, first go back to Recovery. Did you wipe the SD:EXT partition too?
Wipe the following:
Factory Reset
Dalvik Cache
SD: EXT
Make sure your card is formatted as FAT32.
You may have to reflash the actual stock rom.
If you can get hold of another sd card, download the stock rom zip and apps2sd zip and place onto sd card using a card reader or another phone that accepts micro sd cards, re-insert sd card into phone, enter recovery, wipe everything, flash stock rom, apply Apps2SD zip in recovery zip after, then partition with 0Mb swap, 512Mb ext2, rest to FAT32. Convert ext2 to ext3.

Just to clarify, when you say flash stock rom, you mean rootedupdate.zip right? (The one used in the rooting process)
UPDATE: Ok, I just did it with rootedupdate.zip but got the same problem. I wiped to factory defaults, wiped the caches, and SD: EXT. Then installed rootedupdate.zip. Then installed Apps2SD, partitioned to your recommended values, and converted ext2 to ext3.
Still, HTC boot logo has been there for a good 10 min. It didn't even reach the animation. I've heard it could take some time to update caches or something like that. Could it possibly take that long?

Try in this exact order:

Ok this is driving me nuts. I did exactly as you asked and it reached the same problem - stuck on the HTC boot screen before the animation even starts.
Funny thing is, I tried installing Amer's bravox ROM which includes Apps2SD (after partitioning my SD of course) and it worked! I'm sure it did because I tried installing a few apps and internal memory barely changed, and did the "su ls -l /data" test as well.
I'm just lost now. Btw, I'm not using a goldcard but I can boot just fine into recovery and all, and my device is not locked.
Any ideas? I've attached the Apps2SD zip I tried. It's worth mentioning, I've tried downloading it from quite a few different sources.
EDIT: I have a feeling the problem lies where BOOT is formatted during the Apps2SD installation. Is it supposed to?
I did everything you did in the first post and my desire gets stuck at htc loading screen. I followed the installation guide from here and just realized that it is actually not meant for bootloader .80 http://nimbu.amorvi.com/2010/05/how-to-root-your-htc-desire/#comments
What can I do to fix all these? Help needed urgently

That post only says the rooting procedure is different for .80, not Apps2SD.
Like I mentioned before, I'm not sure what the problem is, but ROMs with Apps2SD built in work just fine, so that's what I'm doing.
Lil: In the past, Ive tried the a2sd file you attached and I was also not able to boot past the HTC screen so I just used MCR 3.1 with app2sd+.
You may want to try flashing the ROM with a gold card. I have an unbranded Desire and I need to use the gold card when I rooted or need to re-flash to stock. HTH.

You mean reflashing rootedupdate.zip with a gold card? Because I remember trying without one, and it didn't work. Then I tried with one, and was a hassle. Tried again without, and it did work. So I'm guessing I might've missed something the first time I tried without a gold card..?
But from what I understood, it doesn't matter. As long as you're rooted you don't need a gold card, and the rooting process either works all the way or doesn't at all. Did I get something wrong?
And, just to make sure I understood you right, using a gold card should allow me to use the zip above?
If I remember it correctly, I copied the ROM I'm flashing to a gold card and used that card to flash the ROM.

[Q] LeeDroid 2.2d No boot with SD

I just updated to LeeDroid 2.2d with A2SD+ on Sunday. Everything was working fine until this afternoon a bunch of apps popped up with an error at the same time. After force closing them I decided to reboot the phone. When rebooting, it never got past the HTC screen. I pulled the battery and tried a few times with the same result. If I remove my SD card the phone boots and and everything works (except the apps on the sd). Is my SD card defective? I can still see some files in recovery mode, but I cant find the LeeDroid zip that I used to flash the rom.
Phone: HTC Desire A8182
S-On
HBOOT 0.83.0001
Radio 5.10.05.23
Any help is much appriciated.
Thanks,
Jordan
You could try formatting SD External and wipe everything else and reinstall LeeDroid. Do this if you're really sure. Shouldn't be a problem.
Hope this helps
Hi,
I had a similar problem a few days ago although the circumstances leading up to it were a little different from yours.
I had developed a bad habit of just popping out the battery without powering off to change sim cards. On one of those occasions the phone would not reboot past the HTC screen. I guessed that I had corrupted something so checked the SD card first as this was the easiest to do. The FAT32 partition was OK but the EXT3 partition had become corrupted.
I just reformatted the EXT3 partition. Afterwards the phone would boot up correctly.
Hope this helps,
Matt
Thanks for the help. I can read the fat32 partition fine so I'm guessing the ext3 partition it corrupt. How can I reformat ext3 without Rom manager?
Thanks
Jordan

If you are using the ClockworkMOD recovery, it's hidden in the advanced menu.

[Q] LeeDriod 2.5 Boot loop help on HTC Desire

Hi, I have full root and S-OFF enabled on my phone.
Im trying to load the 2.5 version of LeeDroid found here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768703
Once installed, it shows the boot screen, then the "android boot screen" appears, sits there for 10-15 secs, and it automatically reboots, it will not get any further, any ideas?
Thanks!
Go to recovery, full wipe, reflash, reboot.
But post in the desire forum next time . There are more people that can help you.

Thanks, I tired that, did a full wipe & reflash, no luck.
Hi.
I just had a thought, do I need a have a partition on my SD card for ext2/3 before installing this rom? I currently have 2 primary partitions, the 2nd partition is used by link2SD app.
Appreciate any help!
Thanks
Yes, you need a ext3/4 partition (what ever the requirements are) and FAT32 on your SD card. Just use recovery to do it, so simple.
Thanks, Ive created a 700MB EXT3 partition, and the rom loaded fine.
Only issue is that using a disk usage app, the data storage only shows up as 237MB? I thought it would be 700MB, as thats the size of my partition?
Thanks
All sorted thanks!

[Q] Rom installation problems

I'm hoping someone can help me with rom installation problems, I have reached a stalling
point and have not found a similar problem in the forums.
My phone is an SCLD Desire, pvt3, rooted and s-offed, cwm 3.0.0.5, radio
32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27. The SD card is a transcend 8Gb class 6 with a 1.5Gb ext4
partition, formatted with gparted. Stock hboot.
I have so far tried to load both RcMix InsertCoin A2SD versions with no success.
I am following the instructions for both Roms to the letter;
1. Wipe data
2. wipe cache partition
3. wipe dalvik cache
4. reboot recovery
5. install rom from sd card
Both roms tell me that they have loaded successfully from zip, then I reboot the system.
Both start to load, show their respective logos and then do the following:
InsertCoin will get me to the sim unlock screen, I unlock the sim and screen says loading,
then I get to a screen with wallpaper, notification bar and sense bar, but no icons or widgets.
When the screen times out and I wake it, I get wallpaper and notification bar only.
The phone will not even power down.
RcMix starts to load, shows the rcmix animated logo for a while, then the logo ceases
its animation. If the screen dims and I wake it, it shows the static rcmix logo only.
I have left the phone alone for over a half an hour on each attempt to see if the roms
would load successfully.
I use Ubuntu and have found that I cannot transfer files to and from the ext4 partition. I get a permission denied every time I try. I'm not sure if this is normal or not.
Can anyone please help , this is driving me nutz.
Thank you.
I see the problem. Your radio is too old, flash the latest one

I think it has nothing to do with the radio. You just forgot to wipe /system, too. Do this and try to flash again.

I had same radio+ same problem
Not saying it without reason, but if you wipe ALL USERDATA? it's the same right? and i forgot to see that one But anyway if that doesn't work it's most likely the radio
Yes you are right. It's the same. We'll see what helps.

Updated Radio
I've upgraded to the latest radio version 5.17.05.23 and tried again, making sure everything was wiped. The installation gets further than last time and after a couple of reboots I get the setup screen but there is no keyboard to input the details, and sense constantly force closes. There was also no sim unlock screen. When I tried to shut down the phone it went into a bootloop.
I will try another install to verify.
Tried fresh install again but am getting partially loaded rom: sense ui is working but force closes on any interaction, when I tried to go to settings it says "the linked program is no longer on your phone", no sim unlock screen, no keyboard. Bootlooped again on powering down.
I read some where in XDA forum that the CWM 3.0xxx is buggy.
Try to use CWM 2.5.0.7 and see.

It seems like a silly question, do you have an ext partition? If not make one with gparted, or use AmonRa recovery(that is able to partition you sd), i find it much better than CWM
If you already have an ext partition is it 1GB?

Flash RaRecovery. Do full wipe, reinstall rom. I use RCMix for months and don't have any issues.
It gets stranger???
In reply to previous posts:
Firstly thank you all for your suggestions.
Genie4all:
There is a post which says that cwm 2.5.?? does not handle ext4 and recommends cwm 3.0.0.5, I was previously on 2.5.?? and was getting the same problem.
TopGear63z:
Yes I have a 1.5Gb ext3, previously ext4 partition
I thought I would see if changing from ext4 to ext3 would make any difference, also ran melethron's alignment script before reinstalling RcMix again. It made no difference.
However I also decided to try LeeDroid 3.0.8 and it loaded and ran perfectly.
This is making so sense (no pun intended) now, after all there should be no difference in the way a rom is loaded on a stock hboot. Could it be that LeeDroid is Sense 1 and the others are 1.9/2.1/30 hybrids?
Would AmonRa recovery really make a difference?
Any other suggestion would be greatly appreciated as I really want to experience those new sense 3.0 goodies.
Thanks.
Resize your ext partition to 1GB with gparted see if that work.and also try to flash it with amonra i read it somewhere on rcmix thread that this rom works great with amonRa though i flashed this rom on both cmw and amonra without any issue.
which rom version did you tried bravo or cm7?
I had the partition at 1Gb previously but in linux it reported only 974Mb free, journalling took the rest so then I decided to resize to 1.5Gb to ensure that at leat 1Gb was free.
I've been trying the Bravo versions of both Roms. Now I think it's time to try Ra recovery and see if that works, I'll report back on the results.
Thanks
if that don't work then change your partition to cm7r2 and flash the cm-7 version and Rcmix cm7 version is fast and smoother than bravo.
You know that 1GB is not the least, it's recommended maximum, you should at least have 512mb to let the rom work. I have 1.1GB ext and no problems but i had when i used 1.8GB, so i actually think that's the problem. Only if it still doesn't work after using AmonRa's recovery ofcourse
I'm on RcMix with ext4 and CWM 2.5 and it works like charm.
Try formatting your card to FAT32 and use gparted to create a 1gb ext portion at the end and try.
Also do a full wipe.
Sent from my HTC Desire
1.5 gb ext3 is really good and will make no problem.. it might be caused by bad mounting the ext3 partition... go to applications then Manage Applications and see if any grey applications there...
Solved
Changed my recovery to AmonRa 2.0.1 as suggested and am now running RcMix successfully.
Thank you all for your help and suggestions.

[Q] Runnymede AIO V4.0.3 Special Edition - Issue with SD card

Hello everyone,
I am new to this forum and to rooting and installing new roms, but since the issue with the lack of space on my Desire was giving me problems I decided to root, s-off and install a new rom this weekend.
I must say at first I thought I was way over my head, but after reading around the forum I started to understand a little bit of how the whole thing works.
I was sucessfull instaling everything and had the Runnymede up and running with 4Ext Recovery till the last hour. I was having a little bit of lag so I saw my sdcard was not formated as it was suposed to, or as it is listed on the developers forum of the Runnymede.
I had created the 1Ext with 512Mb, the 2Ext with 1024 and the swap with 1024, nevertheless everything was working properly with just a little lag.
So a few minutes ago I decided to format the sd card as per indication of a member here with the following guide 4ext_Partition Guide.zip - [Click for QR Code] (6.35 MB, 20 views).
After I booted the phone it won't pass the galaxy nexus splash screen, it just keeps splashing and never enters the rom. I retried to format the sd card but still with no success.
Did I do something wrong? Should I reformat the sdcard with another arrangement? Or do I need to wipe everything again and reinstall the ROM? I would like to avoid this last one since I had already everything ready and synced.
Looking forward to receive your expert comments, I remain sending you my best regards and thanking you for your help.
José
After reformat you need to flash rom again for that reason you stuck in boot loop
Runnymede AIO requires only FAT32 + 1-1.5 GB EXT 4, No second EXT, No swap
Regarding your question about back up: use titanium backup
Hi,
Thank you very much for your fast reply, I had no idea that reformating the partitions in the sd card I would to reinstall the rom. I am always learning
Well I have reformated the sd card and I am now installing the rom again, I hope everything goes well.
Thanks again.
Don't forget thanks button if helped, please
Done, thanks again
Well hello again, i have been watching the thread of the ROM i have installed from Runnymede and I have some doubts, could someone please help.
Thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1315961&page=1160
Here are my questions:
- The reason I have rooted and s-off my desire was to install a new ROM to have space available for apps. The ROM is running perfectly but on the storage menu my internal space available was around 140 Mb, I have installed a few apps from the market and the space is now 101 Mb. Did I do something wrong and still don't have space available?
- Here are the steps I took: I had a stock HTC Desire with Hboot 0.93, so I rooted with unrevoked, s-off with revolution, installed 4Ext touch, formated the sdcard with 1 ext4 partition (1024Mb) and the rest fat32, wiped the phone, installed the rom, and that's it.
I can't remember if it installed the a2sd or ad2sdx, I did a typical install and only changed the camera option to record 720p.
The phone is working perfectly but I am wondering if I will be out of space after installing a few more apps?
If you need more information feel free to ask.
Thank you.
José
