[Q] Rom installation problems - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm hoping someone can help me with rom installation problems, I have reached a stalling
point and have not found a similar problem in the forums.
My phone is an SCLD Desire, pvt3, rooted and s-offed, cwm 3.0.0.5, radio
32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27. The SD card is a transcend 8Gb class 6 with a 1.5Gb ext4
partition, formatted with gparted. Stock hboot.
I have so far tried to load both RcMix InsertCoin A2SD versions with no success.
I am following the instructions for both Roms to the letter;
1. Wipe data
2. wipe cache partition
3. wipe dalvik cache
4. reboot recovery
5. install rom from sd card
Both roms tell me that they have loaded successfully from zip, then I reboot the system.
Both start to load, show their respective logos and then do the following:
InsertCoin will get me to the sim unlock screen, I unlock the sim and screen says loading,
then I get to a screen with wallpaper, notification bar and sense bar, but no icons or widgets.
When the screen times out and I wake it, I get wallpaper and notification bar only.
The phone will not even power down.
RcMix starts to load, shows the rcmix animated logo for a while, then the logo ceases
its animation. If the screen dims and I wake it, it shows the static rcmix logo only.
I have left the phone alone for over a half an hour on each attempt to see if the roms
would load successfully.
I use Ubuntu and have found that I cannot transfer files to and from the ext4 partition. I get a permission denied every time I try. I'm not sure if this is normal or not.
Can anyone please help , this is driving me nutz.
Thank you.

I see the problem. Your radio is too old, flash the latest one

I think it has nothing to do with the radio. You just forgot to wipe /system, too. Do this and try to flash again.

I had same radio+ same problem
Not saying it without reason, but if you wipe ALL USERDATA? it's the same right? and i forgot to see that one But anyway if that doesn't work it's most likely the radio

Yes you are right. It's the same. We'll see what helps.

Updated Radio
I've upgraded to the latest radio version 5.17.05.23 and tried again, making sure everything was wiped. The installation gets further than last time and after a couple of reboots I get the setup screen but there is no keyboard to input the details, and sense constantly force closes. There was also no sim unlock screen. When I tried to shut down the phone it went into a bootloop.
I will try another install to verify.
Tried fresh install again but am getting partially loaded rom: sense ui is working but force closes on any interaction, when I tried to go to settings it says "the linked program is no longer on your phone", no sim unlock screen, no keyboard. Bootlooped again on powering down.

I read some where in XDA forum that the CWM 3.0xxx is buggy.
Try to use CWM 2.5.0.7 and see.

It seems like a silly question, do you have an ext partition? If not make one with gparted, or use AmonRa recovery(that is able to partition you sd), i find it much better than CWM
If you already have an ext partition is it 1GB?

Flash RaRecovery. Do full wipe, reinstall rom. I use RCMix for months and don't have any issues.

It gets stranger???
In reply to previous posts:
Firstly thank you all for your suggestions.
Genie4all:
There is a post which says that cwm 2.5.?? does not handle ext4 and recommends cwm 3.0.0.5, I was previously on 2.5.?? and was getting the same problem.
TopGear63z:
Yes I have a 1.5Gb ext3, previously ext4 partition
I thought I would see if changing from ext4 to ext3 would make any difference, also ran melethron's alignment script before reinstalling RcMix again. It made no difference.
However I also decided to try LeeDroid 3.0.8 and it loaded and ran perfectly.
This is making so sense (no pun intended) now, after all there should be no difference in the way a rom is loaded on a stock hboot. Could it be that LeeDroid is Sense 1 and the others are 1.9/2.1/30 hybrids?
Would AmonRa recovery really make a difference?
Any other suggestion would be greatly appreciated as I really want to experience those new sense 3.0 goodies.
Thanks.

Resize your ext partition to 1GB with gparted see if that work.and also try to flash it with amonra i read it somewhere on rcmix thread that this rom works great with amonRa though i flashed this rom on both cmw and amonra without any issue.
which rom version did you tried bravo or cm7?

I had the partition at 1Gb previously but in linux it reported only 974Mb free, journalling took the rest so then I decided to resize to 1.5Gb to ensure that at leat 1Gb was free.
I've been trying the Bravo versions of both Roms. Now I think it's time to try Ra recovery and see if that works, I'll report back on the results.
Thanks

if that don't work then change your partition to cm7r2 and flash the cm-7 version and Rcmix cm7 version is fast and smoother than bravo.

You know that 1GB is not the least, it's recommended maximum, you should at least have 512mb to let the rom work. I have 1.1GB ext and no problems but i had when i used 1.8GB, so i actually think that's the problem. Only if it still doesn't work after using AmonRa's recovery ofcourse

I'm on RcMix with ext4 and CWM 2.5 and it works like charm.
Try formatting your card to FAT32 and use gparted to create a 1gb ext portion at the end and try.
Also do a full wipe.
Sent from my HTC Desire

1.5 gb ext3 is really good and will make no problem.. it might be caused by bad mounting the ext3 partition... go to applications then Manage Applications and see if any grey applications there...

Solved
Changed my recovery to AmonRa 2.0.1 as suggested and am now running RcMix successfully.
Thank you all for your help and suggestions.

Unable to flash new/seemingly any rom - Any help?

So a while back I rooted my desire, and played about with a few roms, then stuck with cyanogen for quite a while. This is the order of a few actions I took which I think may be where the problem occurred.
So from being rooted with cyanogen 7:
I decided to s-off the phone with alpharev
I then put a new splash screen on
Then decided I wanted a new sd card (I was told by a mate it will just go straight in no problems) So I bought an 8gb card stuck it in put my backed up data on the card and booted, all was fine.
I then thought about trying a few new roms that had appeared, and I tried flashing one only for the phone to hang forever on the splash screen.
I've been trying a few things to try to resolve it, stabbing in the dark, such as running unrevoked3 (maybe to root again, only for it to say the firmware is too new) I made my new sd card a gold card, like I did with the original.
None of these helped. has anyone any ideas or know how to sort this out???
What recovery do you have? Which ROM did hang?
Did you do a full wipe?
Does the rom you want to instal require a ext partition?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
I wiped the cache, and dalvik cache, even did a factory reset in recovery. Im using clockwork recovery.
I tried InsertCoin_GB_Sense2.1_CM7_v20 and Reflex_S_2.0_LITE_GingerBread_Sense-2.1_GRI40_A2SD+
Maybe these need an ext partition? Would that be it? I'm not sure how to set that up yet.
yes those roms need ext partition, don't know about reflex bu have insertcoin myself, 1GB ext4.
1.go to recovery
2.press on partition sd,choose the size, then after it's finished convert it to ext3 in partition sd again below the option of making one, you can make ext4, but thats up to you. ext3 is needed..
Don't forget to backup your sd, you'll lose everything on it
The ROM you mentioned is an a2sd ROM. So yes, you'll need to partition your SD card if you want to use a a2sd rom.

Thanks for this I will get on it and let you know
I can't find an option in my clockwork to partition the sd. Just been searching a bit and seen it can be done through rom manager, that rebooted the phone and left me with the ! in a triangle and the small droid on the screen and when I press the power button it is in recovery it says installation aborted. Is there a guide for the Desire? I can't seem to find one....
Sorry found a guide on here. Will try to do it now.
Ok so I am really struggling to get anywhere with a few different guides to partition the card. Through rom manager it also says signature failed, although I have tried toggling the permissions. Major

Steveoh like i told, do it from recovery(easiest), when you rooted you were able to change the recovery(unrEVOked), do so and change it to Ra recovery
Still if you don't want to this program can help youhttp://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html
Download this and do it from you pc, although it's very easy to do from recovery, takes 5,6 minutes mostly waiting..
I have created a partition with the program you recommenced. How will I know that it is ext 3? And that my phone will use it?
found it!

[Q] LeeDriod 2.5 Boot loop help on HTC Desire

Hi, I have full root and S-OFF enabled on my phone.
Im trying to load the 2.5 version of LeeDroid found here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768703
Once installed, it shows the boot screen, then the "android boot screen" appears, sits there for 10-15 secs, and it automatically reboots, it will not get any further, any ideas?
Thanks!
Go to recovery, full wipe, reflash, reboot.
But post in the desire forum next time . There are more people that can help you.

Thanks, I tired that, did a full wipe & reflash, no luck.
Hi.
I just had a thought, do I need a have a partition on my SD card for ext2/3 before installing this rom? I currently have 2 primary partitions, the 2nd partition is used by link2SD app.
Appreciate any help!
Thanks
Yes, you need a ext3/4 partition (what ever the requirements are) and FAT32 on your SD card. Just use recovery to do it, so simple.
Thanks, Ive created a 700MB EXT3 partition, and the rom loaded fine.
Only issue is that using a disk usage app, the data storage only shows up as 237MB? I thought it would be 700MB, as thats the size of my partition?
Thanks
All sorted thanks!

Stuck at restoring sd-ext after flashing CM7 Nightly

Hello,
I wanted to try CM7 nightly.
I had rooted stock rom 2.29.405.5 with a2sd+ from this thread.
Before flashing cm7 nightly 225 I wiped data/factory reset and wiped cache partition.
Flashed rom and booted normaly.
After that I wanted to restore my nandroid backup..
I wiped cache and data/factory reset.
Then I got an error while restoring /sd-ext!
Tried again by doing the same and wiping dalvik cache.
When the process reached the point when it restores the sd-ext the progress bar got stuck.
(s-off and clockworkmod recovery (CM v.5)
After that I removed the battery and powered the device.
All my apps are not there. Not even the superuser app.
Please what can I do?
I'm having the same issue with my nexus one. any ideas?
What happens if you use advanced restore and restore the,sd ext on its own?
You may need to reformat your ext
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
The recovery would freeze
After a lot of retries I gave up trying to restore it.
I came to the conclusion the sd got corrupted. (Transcend 8GB class 6)
After that a lot of "bad" things happened, such as couldn't mount sd card, had to reflash partition table and a randomly occured USB brick...hopefully with the help of a friend we(mostly he) managed to fix it..I am at a stock rooted rom with s-off now and want to buy a new sd card..
Is there any way to verify that my old microSD has really been corrupted?
I have continued (kind of) the thread here!
With more info and questions.
Thank you for your reply!
I have exact the same problem, but the disadvantage that I can not install any Rom as it freezes when installing. So I'm not able to start the phone as it sticks on "quietly brilliant" screen.
What I have:
- Amoled grooted
- S-OFF mit Alpharev CM7 r2
- HBoot 0.93.1000
- Recovery: CWM 5.0.2.6
- Last Rom: Runny Mede v3
What I tried:
- Restore Nandroid: Freezes on restoring SDEXT (after factory and dalvik wipe)
- Install ROM: Freezes at writing SDEXT or says that it finished but the bar sticks
- Format SD Card, deleted EXT4 partition and remade it with Gparted. Checked it with windows chkdsk and Gparted and it gave me no errors
- Rewrote the partition table to CM7 r2 with a PB99img.zip
- Made a EXT4 partition with CWM
- Changed the SD card with another one (always making a EXT4 partition and formatted in FAT32)
I don't know what else I should do. Please help restoring my Desire!
Could it be a issue of the CWM? As I can not go back to another one, because Fastboot flash doesn't work, I can not test it by myself!
What do you mean fastboot flash doesn't work? Tell me everything

In Fastboot menu I can choose only from Bootloader, Reboot, Reboot Bootloader and Power Down. I don't have anything else to choose from.

Thats not how fastboot works. Read the adb and fastboot faq in my signature (ignore all adb things, and start at "what is fastboot?")
oh ok, seen it. So I'm gonna try Android Flasher to flash recovery.
To sort out recorvery as source of the issues, which one should I flash? Which one is the most stable?
Personally I am a cwm 2.5.0.7 man.
Got it running again!
Flashed the CWM 5.0.2.0 and everything worked fine again.
It seems that the Clockwork mod 5.0.2.6.111007 of zyonee has a problem with SD-EXT (so it was on mine, don't know if it works on other devices too).

[Q] Rom not installing

Hi
I have a Desire GSM rooted and S-ON RA-Desire v2.0.1 stock HBOOT Ext 4 1Gb latest radio ends in 23
Have been running on a custom rom for over a year now and want to install the latest copy of the same rom. The md5sum is identical for the zip file to the source.
Booted into recovery wiped all data, cache and then devlik-cache.
I have turned off signature verification and then selected my rom zip on SD card.
Installed the rom rather there were no errors and it took about 20 seconds (seemed too fast).
Next in recovery I did a reboot.
Now the screen went white with green HTC logo in centre for about 1 minute then after this a black screen with android written logo for about another 2 minutes.
Eventually phone boots into rom but it is not the new rom it is the exact same old rom.
I can see from applications listed that I am still super user so not lost root.
In settings software information everything is listed identical to what I had before.
The contents of the zip files are different so it is not the same rom being flashed.
Choosen rom is
[ROM][Cool Sense][5 April]Cool Droid v3|2.3.4|FASTEST|Data++/Stock (currently have Icecream sense v2 installed which is an earlier version of the same rom)
I did not install the alignment zip as I had already setup to use an earlier rom version and ext4.
What have I done wrong in trying to install my choosen rom please?
I feel like I must have missed something.
Not sure which recovery you have, with 4ext I boot to recover, format everything except sd then install zip and it seems to work, obviously everything then needs reinstalling from the backup you'll have made

Hi
Unrevoked 3, as I have one of those odd PVT4 Desire phones 4000 erase size using RA Recovery. (something like that sorry if technical references are not super clear).
I use Titatium backup so reinstalling wont take long just need the ROM to install.
This is a fast glitch free rom using sense so I do not want to try a different rom as it gave me a year without trouble. Only doing this to start again with the space issue needing a refresh.
I have cleared delivk cache again and flashed my original v2 rom and that worked showing expected progress reports.
So I thought would try flashing the new v3 rom, and see if I got any joy this time.
Still no joy, it looks like it starts as two lines appear then it says complete with no obvious error.
So I reflashed the original v2 rom again and will go with that as I need a phone more then I need to play.
Odd.
Maybe the new v3 rom needs sOFF but as far as I could read it does not.
Even installing the previous rom things are still not right.
The apps that normally come with the rom are not installed such as Demon controller, No adds and Busy Box. I can see that they are in the zip file they are just not been added.
I can manually install Busy Box from the market so I know it is not a permission thing.
Titatium Backup is seeing my Ext4 partion (it calls it an ap2sd but it is showing) so I don't think there is a problem with my SD car arrangement.
I stupidly do not have a nandroid of the previous install I can restore.
So any ideas please why the previously working and installed rom is not reinstalling fully with all it's built in apps?
Anything I could try please?
Looks like I have identified the problem, my SD card is flakey and Gparted reports sick partion table that wont fix so the Ext4 partion was not been seen which is probably why the install failed and the apps were not installing.
New Sd card will be ordered and then start again.
Thankfully I dod have an uptodate SD card backup.
Phone is working just as a phone for the next few days.
These micro SD cards do not last long at this rate I get 1 year from them as this will be my third ordered.
Go to S-OFF, is better and mandatory for a lot of rom.
New card and more fiddle work with Gparted and now waiting for setup to complete as old v2 rom is installed. It works fast and is smooth plus has HTCsense so I can keep my sync capability so will be staying with it so I can live without S-OFF
Gparted when I followd the recommendations I kept getting a corrupt card on my phone so this is what worked for me.
Format card on phone
Then put card into usb card reader and place in PC
Reboot PC onto Gparted CD
Select SD card and then I resized the fat32 partion already there and then added a new EXT4 partion.
This worked for me.
Dump gparted, format the card through 4ext recovery

[Q]Freezing system. How to instal CM7r2 ROM with all apps in the phone and no sd-ext

Hi,
I cannot find an answer for my problem. I have rooted Desire. I have installed 10 different ROMs on 2 different sd cards and my phone is regularly freezing at least twice per day. Phone dos not answer for calls, screen is black and I cannot switch it on, I have to remove battery. It happens that it freezes 5 or more times per day. It is really annoying. I have no idea why it happens. Freezing is wierd because the screen is black and not responsive but e.g. radio is still playing. First I thought it is ROM's fault so installed few of them. Then I changed sd card but this also didn't help. I think the problem may be in storing apps in sd card because if there is no apps installed the phone is working fine.
Please correct me if I am wrong. Is it possible to install custom Sense ROM on e.g. CM7r2 so there is more space for apps but without sd-ext partition? I have tried to do it with one custom ROM but it did not even start. So how to remove/disable/switch off app2sd, data2sd or int2sd from custom ROMs? Or is there a CM7r2 ROM that is not using sd card for apps storing? I don't want to return to stock hboot and stock system because then I have too little space for apps (147M) but with CM7r2 hboot (287M) should be enough.
I am not sure if my thinking is correct, I will appreciate any help. Maybe there is another solution for freezing system problem?
Piotr
My phone now:
Recovery: 4ext
S-Off, CM7r2
Radio: 5.17.05.23
hboot 6.93.1002
Card: 8GB class 10
You may be having a faulty sd-ext partition. How did you partition your sd-card?
Any AOSP GB rok should fit in the cm7r2 hboot. Just delete a2sd scripts from the system>etc>init.d folder, and you shouldn't have problems.

Thanks. I partitioned sd card using linux, alligment is checked. Should i partition it using 4ext recovery? does INT2SD has scripts in the same folder? if I remove sd-ext partition totaly will android still work?
Roms with int2sd won't work without an ext partition.
And yes, follow the guide in my sig for a correct partition.
It works now!
Before I was always using Sense ROMs and all of them were freezing on my phone. I have done sd card partitioning again using your guide and I have installed system you use MildWild.Since I installed it I didn't have any problems! Thank you very much. I don't know if it is partitioning or new system that helped but most important is that works fast and stable for 2 days now with all my apps installed!
This is great I don't remember when was the last time my phone was working for 2 days in a row without freezing and taking battery off! So much better now
Thanks!!
No problem.
Installing CM7/r2 HBOOT
This is actually realy simple,
Before you do anything, Backup everything PLEASE.
This will erase your current rom, so you have to install it again.
go to alpharev.nl and scroll down till you see Bravo CM7 r2. Click on Download. Not the regular Download,
But the download after that. it's called : PB99IMG_cm7r2. Download that, and remove the _cm7r2 text. So
that the file is named PB99IMG.
Put your SD Card into your computer, and take this file ( PB99IMG) onto your SD card.Boot into the bootloader, ( By pressing Volume down + Power ) and wait. it will say something like : '' Would you like to update? '' Volume up for ''yes'' Volume down for ''no'' .
do ''yes'' . After that , it will ask you to reboot. You want to do that.
After that, i faced the problem that 4EXT Recovery didn't work. Solution: Go again into bootloader, and select clear storage.
