[Q] USB Charging Vs Wall Charging - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry if this has been asked before or in the wrong place...
Anyways, when I was using CM7 RC4 I noticed that if I charged my phone by USB on my MacBook the battery life was significantly reduced compared to wall charge. Anyone elts notice this? Or is this just me?
I flashed CM7 Final earlier today, and while at work I read about the GPS fix so I am in the middle of flashing Fresh to do the fix but I am going right back to CM7 final!!

It shouldn't affect your battery life. USB charging will be slower than a wall charger such as the stock one, which supports 1 amp charging and is recognized as an "AC" charger. But once you reach 100%, your battery life shouldn't be affected by how you got there.

[Q] captivate and 3500mah extended battery, Help

my captivate is v2.2 froyo rooted w z4 and lagfix, My stock battery barely lasts me through a night at work,
I ordered a 3500mah battery from ebay and when i received it I charged it overnight with my phone off....
The next day was a miracle! Battery stayed at 100% for 2 hours, by the end of the day I still had 60% battery left!
I read that the first couple charges need to be cycled so i tried to drain the battery by playing a movie over and over with screen brightness and volume at max.....
the battery lasted forever, after getting it down to 7% I charged it overnight- sameway with phone off, but now nomater what i do it only lasts the length of a stock battery.
I tried unplugging, plugging back in, phone off , phone on, waiting hours after it says 100%(on charger overnight) and tried ac and usb charging, but it just isnt seeming to charge all the way.
I was going to buy a second extended battery and an external battery charger but all the external chargers i see on ebay say are only good for li-ion batteries up to 2000mah, plus i had to modify my otterbox defender case to support my new battery and it would be a pain to have to take case apart everytime i swap batteries.
Ive been reading for days about what to do to no avail, all the external chargers i see arent rated for 3500mah capacity and I wouldnt mind flashing a custom rom that would support extended battery charging but the more research i do the more confused i get.....
Is there a kernal out there that is stable and supports charging these batteries with no bugs or issues????
What custom rom would be best?
please help......
any info is greatly appreciated
there is no such thing as a rom that supports extended batteries
the phone does
the chargers ALL work for the extended batteries there is no capacity rating limit on them. they do have a charging rate but it is around 350 to 800 mA/H and the batteries are acutally around 2500 mA so devide 2500/500 is 5 hours to charge.
[Review] 3500mah extended battery pictures heres my review - and would have been a better place to post and ask.,...
Cheap Chinese Battery Charger heres my charger. works fine.
[Mod] Battery Charger - USB Upgrade Mod heres my charger mod to charge faster thru USB. 800 ma/h so under 3 hours for extended,
charging on the wall charger or thru the phone takes longer than a regular battery.
charging thru the phone on USB is faster with the official samsung or with a hacked usb charger like above
i get upto 60 hours out of my battery. - under volted properly and custom kernel options..
you may want to wipe your battery stats. but i switch back and fourth no problem.
or your battery has a bad cell. those extendeds are just 2 batteries linked together.

there as an app in the market to wipe battery stats I forgot what its name it might be helpful to you since you're on stock froyo. probably your phone battery stats was in line with your oem battery so to maximized your extended batt you will have to wiped out the current battery stats for your phone to adjust to your new extended battery. I will post the app name later if I could find it. since you are rooted it will be of use to you.
edit: ok I found the app it's called battery calibration by nema download it from the market give it a whirl and observe how it goes..
i remember reading about such an app for rooted phones on a different forum but someone replied saying that it would wipe battery stats but still wouldnt help since the phones stock software is written to only charge a battery to 1500mah then it stops charging.....
Do u think it would work or am i screwed unless i flash a new kernal?
would be worth a shot.......
Is it best to wipe battery stats when extended battery is drained b4 charging.... or when fully charging .... or does it matter?
thanks guys for the fast responses!.....
so any of the chargers that fit my battery should work then.... they have the same specs as yours... so i will go ahead and order one for now,
I guess the surest way to know i am getting full charge would be to use the external charger...
So an extended battery should fully charge in the phone with no issues? Ive read so many forums that say a custom kernal is only way to charge them 100% in the phone???
no.. to charge at 100% speed. and i havent heard of any kernel for that in the captivate forums...
ie using the official samsung charger (usb) will charge at full speed the one that comes with your phone is 750 ma/h. if you plug into a non official charger the phone will only let in about 350ma/hour through the usb. or hack it.
i have the usb that came with the phone.... so i will get 750ma per hour if i connect usb to computer only or it will charge that fast on the samsung wall adapter also?
the wall adapter only!
the phone has to see the official CHARGER to charge full speed. or hack the other CHARGER, other wise it charges at what it calls "usb" so charging using usb would be slower too. if you read the [mod] link above, or all the other times i said CHARGER above, you would understand,
alright....thanks bro
charging via usb from your pc will always be slower than using a wall adapter.
not true.
aftermarket chargers (not samsung) wont charge the phone any faster than the pc
....unless you mod it!
[Mod] Battery Charger - USB Upgrade Mod
unless the middle 2 pins of a USB cable or the charger itself has the 2 pins shorted the phone charges in USB mode 350ish mA/h with the OEM chargers or a modded charger it charges in "AC mode" upto 1100 ish mA/h
the charger that comes with it supports this mode but only 750mA/h max output.
....
.......
....
ya.....

[Q] Faster Battery Charger

Hi, i was wondering if there are any 'super' or 'turbo' chargers for phones. Chargers which charge up the battery faster.
I am going to get a 3000mah battery for my desire but i remember reading somewhere that they take ages to charge up.
My current desire has a charging problem, and does not charge at all at most times, even though charger is plugged in it stays at zero% charge.
Try Battery Monitor Widget. There you can see how many mA your charger puts into your device. You can't charge batterys too fast. There is a limit given by the battery. There is also a difference in chargers. You find them in the technical data.
Remember the charger is in the phone, the thing you plug into the wall is just a power supply.
Certain kernels will charge faster than others as well. Look for a fast charge kernel.
try different kernels
So that basically means the "turbo chargers" that they sell in the stores are a crock?
i will try it later.
battery charger
I have purchased in the store the battery charger, and spent two years no problem, it should be in there you can find what you need.
My change to a glitch kernel not only made it much faster, but the battery life seems better as well.
Sent from a glitched cm7 fascinate.
Charging via power supply plugged into power sockets is definitely better than charging via USB cables. Also, check out for cases for your phone which are capable of charging it too. I have seen some of those available for iPhone.
Thanks, I changed kernel and it started charging up.
I bought a new dock for my phone anyway.

[Q] Charging issues - CM10.1

I currently have the CM10.1-M3 build from 4/17/13 installed.
For a long while, I have been having major issues charging my Captivate Glide.
My original battery died. It was bloated. I called AT+T and they sent me a replacement. I also bought two high capacity batteries.
If I leave the phone charging about half the time little or no progress is made charging. Lat night I charged the phone for over 8 hours and the charge went from 10% to 14%.
Other times I will wake up after charging it all night and it will say fully charged, but then the instant it is unplugged from the charger, it will drop down from 100% to 20% or less.
Then once every 3 or 4 days it will actually fully charge. But even in that case the charging is slow at best.
I did a full wipe and re-flashed last night and nothing changed. I have tried charging in airplane mode, but that seems to make it worse. I have had a little tiny bit of success turning mobile data off, but otherwise I have tried everything I could think of with no luck.
Has anyone else experienced similar issues, or have any suggestions? Is this a case where I might need to replace the phone entirely?

I have tried a few different chargers. I mostly use a 2.1amp wall charger. I also have a 1 amp wall charger, and a 1 amp car charger. I have tried about 3 different car chargers.
I am really suspicious that the micro-usb port on the phone went bad and that I will need to get the phone replaced.
Charging with AC is gonna be alot faster then with DC. But as far as it being the rom I don't see tthat.. sounds like possibly a loose wire or bad connection when u lay ur phone down
Sent from my SGH-I927 using xda app-developers app
phatryan has a point, do a nandroid backup, flash to stock and see if the charging makes a difference..
Charging
Hello,
When I charge my Captivate Glide with phone powered up plugged in to the wall, using the supplied wall charger, I've noticed that the battery seems to drain quicker. This is with the original battery, I will be getting an extended battery for my phone. If I power the phone down then charge it in to the wall it charges quickly and seems to take longer draining. This does not happen when charging with the PC.

Bloated battery could just be bad - but it could also be due to overcharging. That's not going to happen unless there is a serious problem with your phone, or possibly a problem with the contacts leading to an incorrect voltage reading. This also may explain your problems charging and sudden jumps in charge %.
Clean your contacts well on the battery side and phone side with a pencil eraser, rubbing alcohol, etc.
I notice a big difference with whatever kernel is shipping with the current M3 cm10.1 build between a 500ma charger and 2amp charger, so I imagine the kernel is set for a 750ma or 1amp charge.

Note 4 : New Battery Drains While Charging

Hi. I had noticed that my batts keeps draining even if it being charged while using it. I use my phone for navigation. Before, it never had this issue where the charge keeps the battery at 100% even if the screen and navigation is alway on. Recently, I noticed that even if the phone is being charged while being used the battery charge keeps going down. I had tried a few backup batteries but all has the same result. I thought that it was all bad batteries so today, I purchased a battery from Battery Plus but this has the same result, it discharges while being charged when the phone is being used.
It charges the battery to 100% when screen is off or not being used.
I tried to factory reset even Odin flashed the phone that I think could fix it but still has this issue.
I might soon conclude that it could be my phone that has a bad charging unit.
But, it charges the battery.
Anybody had this issue?
I would appreciate your feedback.
Thank you.
more likely its your charger, your cable, or the port on your phone that are limiting the current that your phone is getting.
what type of charger are you using?
also i have had this issue before but my usb port on the phone is starting to go. a switch to a quickcharge charger and a high quality cable fixed it for me.
Yes, thats because low quality or degraded usb cable or problem on usb port on the phone.
Low power charge mode, caused by any of the above, cant handle use and charge at the same time.
you are both right. my home chargers (AC) can charge the phone with lcd turned on all the way to 100%. only on my car that has this issue. so, i purchased a new car charger and it fixed the issue.
I appreciate the replies.
Thank you.

Slow / Inconsistent charging

Hello!
Charging problems started to occur a month ago on my phone. The problem is that it charges really slowly, but other times normally.
I experienced that if I plug in the phone when the battery is between 20-60% it charges super slowly.
Sometimes it speeds up but more often not.
Here are some screenshots that show that sometimes it takes like 6 hours to charge and sometimes it basically just hovers around a percentage and doesnt do anything. Gets like 10% overnight.
On the second picture you can see that it charges normally till it reaches 55% then it slows down to like 5%/hour speed.
I noticed this while the phone was draining battery even tho it was plugged in while using it.
I bought a new OEM battery and its the same with it aswell. Some chargers charge it quicker, some slower, but the problem occurs with every charger.
What do you guys recommend me to do?
Thanks a lot!
is your charger 2 Ampere as it should be?
U can also try to recalibrate the battery deleting the data/system/batterystats.bin file

Thanks for the reply!
I have used many chargers since I have this problem, but mostly the one that came in the box.
Ill try deleting that file if its possible withouth root.
Edit: It seems i need root for it, so its not an option for me.

Actually brother initially same problem occured with me and it was persisting on the same way load since i come to change my charger now before i was charging it with blackberry passport charger it was really cool and even charges it faster that i mean around 50% faster than the previous charger, but now days m befitted with moto g4+ which meets to charge my lg g3 around 65% faster
But brother dont use any local company pr anypther charger as it may damage the phone display which may come to cost you at high
There are going to be 3 main factors that you want to address:
- Battery
- Charger/charging cable
- Software
It seems you have already addressed your battery. That's usually the #1 culprit, but you've already replaced it so you can rule that out.
The next is the charger and charging cable. This is often overlooked. The stock charger is 5 volts and 1.8 amps (5v 1.8a). Before more advanced smart phones were developed, almost all USB chargers never produced more than a 5v 1.0a charge (most were 5v 0.5a). So you want to ensure you are using at least a 5v 1.8a charger. (I even use my Fire Tablet charger on my G3 which is 5.1v 2.2a, and that works great too). Note that all USB chargers have their output volts/amps printed on them somewhere (usually in very tiny print). The USB cable you are using matters too. The thinner the wire gauge and the longer the cable is, the less power is transmitted. For example, if you're using a thin and cheap 6 foot (2 meter) USB cable on a 5v 2.0a charger, you may only be getting 1.0a of charge from it. If you use a thicker, shorter, and more expensive 3 foot (1 meter) USB cable on that same charger, you ensure you get that full 2.0a of charge (or close to it). The two factors to look for in a USB cable is length (length = resistance = less amps) and wire gauge (not insulation thickness).
The last is software. If you have any way to backup and restore (ie nandroid) your ROM from recovery, I recommend doing that first because it's easy. If you backup your current ROM, factory reset, and the issue persists then you know its the charger/cable. If the issue is gone, then you know it's something in your current ROM. If you do not have access to backup/restore features and/or do not have root, then next you can use the Android OS Battery stats to carefully go over what could possibly be draining so much power when the phone is on or off. There are also several apps that will help you determine where the battery drain is coming from. Note that software can not prevent your phone from charging, but it can drain power so fast, that there is not enough left over to charge the battery. This is especially bad for our G3s because they easily overheat if they are charging and heavily discharging simultaneously.
Hope that helps! Good luck! :fingers-crossed:
