[Q] Built in compcache - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

In one of the earlier nightlies (35 I think) compcache was built in. You went into performance settings and it was right there, just select the amount you want to use for it and reboot.
What happened to that? Was it a fluke because it was literally in for one day then gone the next with no mention of it coming back. Anyone know?

Its still there. I'm running on a version of 38. When I went into performance settings initially it was gone, but after deselecting surface dithering and setting the VM size, and then rebooting....the compcache setting magically reappears. *shrug*
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App

For anyone experimenting with compcache, can you please run the "free" command according to http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Swap_and_Compcache see if it is indeed enabled or not?
As well, I would also like to see the output of "cat /proc/ramzswap", if possible.
Thanks

Hmm, I'll have to try that. I think I did a fresh install so those weren't selected - maybe that's why I saw it. I just remembered seeing it in the change log and got really excited, then went to #36 and *poof* it was gone. Thanks for the tip.

Once I try the suggestion from the above post I'll run the 'free' command and give you the output if it works. Might be a bit later since I'm at work and the boss is a phone nazi.
EDIT: Well clearing those didn't do it for me. It might just be the nightly I'm on (#36). I haven't upgraded because it's so stable and I'm waiting for the pulldown notification issue to be fixed. Looks like I'm stuck without it for a bit longer.

FIX: T-Mobile 6.5 upgrade issues fixed!!

Found this over on the T-Mobile Site.
I Take No Credit .. But I will Say Amazingly Enough It Does Seem To Work!
I did find that this settings he suggest seems to use less mem and does seem to run 10-20% faster.
I am not sure why .. but its seems that it does .. hope the settings do not have a adverse effect.
Only time will tell.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You may have noticed several issues after upgrading to the new T-mobile 6.5. ie... slow response, freezing, crashing, poor battery life, increased memory consumption.
I have made a few adjustments and no longer have any of these issues.
In fact for the last couple of days 6.5 is running better (faster) and the battery is lasting longer than before I did the upgrade.
I am not a trained professional. I do not work for Tmobile, HTC or Microsoft. Follow my advice at your own risk. I am not responsible for any damage done to your handset. I suggest you check you memory usage now then again after all steps are completed. Mine went from the 70's - 80's to the 50's
Ok here it is:
1. Make sure you used the official upgrade released on 1/20/10. ( I used the leaked version first then the official release and I did find some differences) Please back up your Phone first!!
2. Download NETCFSetupv35
2a. Sync your phone to your computer
2b. Run NETCFSetupv35 on your computer. If given the option choose repair. Otherwise just install it and follow the prompts.
2c. If given the option restart your phone. Otherwise Soft restart your phone.
3. Download Advanced Configuration Tool
3a. Transfer it from your computer to your sd card.
3b. On your phone use file explorer and navigate to your sd card.
3c. Find the file and double click it
3d. choose install to sd card.
3e. If given the option restart your phone. Otherwise Soft restart your phone again.
4. From the start menu choose advanced config.
4a. You will see a warning screen first. Move past it.
4b Press the + next to Power Management
4c. The first 7 options need to be enabled. ( SD memory, MMC memory, NAND memory,Sim memory,Async, PPTP, L2TP)
4d. One at a time select the item then at the bottom of the screen select enable. (via the drop down menu)
5. Select Done (Bottom left)
6. You will be given the option to restart. Select yes.
7. Enjoy your phone!!
* Advanced configuration Tool can be used to tweak many settings.
I dont suggest you change anything under performance.
I did and the system became unstable again. Changed them back and everything is fine.

This could be the answer to the problem that im having with my batter life... Check out my thread...

Has anyone else tried this??? Can it be verified to work?
Why install advanced config tool to the SD card?
Well .. I did not do that .. had it installed already :/
Still seemed to work ..

I would think it wouldn't matter where ACT was installed, that's why I thought that line was sort of odd. I didn't know if there was some advantage I didn't know about for installing it to SD.
Since it's a program you just run once and forget maybe he wants to keep his phone memory free? I dunno. Just thought that line was odd. I'll be trying it out myself here in a minute

It seems to be running pretty smooth right now but I just soft reset of course. No hickups using the slider, opening mail, or playing with the Album. Memory usage started in the upper 40's and is hovering at 52% right now. I'll give an update later after using through the day.
Since I already had CF3.5 and Advanced Config on my 6.1 (stock) rom, I went ahead and made the same changes listed above, just to see if it had any effect. It's booted up using a little less RAM than before (38% vs 45%...I'd long ago applied the 2 memory management cabs for the TP2)...and it seems to grow a lot slower too; I've got file explorer, IE, WMP, google maps, and windows marketplace all open and running now, and it's still only up to 51% used.
So, bottom line, it might be worth it for anyone still running 6.1 to give this a try as well...you know, assuming that I'm not the only one left here that isn't on 6.5 yet
Update- while closing all the apps I listed above one-by-one, I watched closely and it seemed that the memory is not only reclaimed much faster than before, but it seems like it's (slightly) larger quantities too.

I think so, but it's kinda hard to tell...Opera and Google Maps both seem to snap open a good bit quicker than before, and button-response etc is as quick as ever, if not quicker.
If you want to suggest a stress test (certain apps/conditions), I'll be happy to give it a shot and report back
After about what... 8-9 hours after my soft reset. With my phone I:
-Received 10 emails
-used Opera Mobile to check the Woot Off 6-7 times
-Looked at another 6 web pages for probably about half an hour of browsing
-Used Google Maps and latitute with GPS
-Beejive IM was on for about 2 hours conversing with 2 different people
-15 minutes of phone calls.
Memory is now at 62%. I'd say I'm ususally normally in the 70's and have probably soft reset at least once by now. I don't know if it's *faster* per sey but it seems to hesitate less now. I've gotta give a big thumbs up to this so far. Definitely uses less memory and less battery so far. My battery just ticked down to 50% and I'm normally in the 30-40's by now.
Anyone who's done this:
Were these power settings all disabled (according to Advanced Config) before you enabled them?
Maybe these settings are only an issue on stock roms. I'm running a custom (Valky) rom, and all of these -- except SD card -- already had Power Management enabled for them. Must be a free service included with custom roms...good ones, anyway

This morning, I compared the md5sum of the leaked and official versions and they are identical. Either you downloaded a different leaked version that I did or you are imagining those differences.

Same here...every single one was disabled (again, stock 6.1 rom) when I first looked at them.
stock touch pro2 6.5 rom here. I've used the no push internet and 0 sharememsize resproxy thing and i can say that this tweak doesn't do much.
The ram at startup constantly stays at 43% after reboot and there doesnt seems to be any significant benefit on the performance. Dont know about the battery though, will playbaround with it and report back.
Stock 6.5 t-mobile rom .. all were disabled for me too.
However In My case .. seemed to make a good inprovment

I've never used advanced Config besides instances like this where someone says "Change this setting to xxx".
I guess it's time to go through all of the config options to see if there are others that are listed as "reccomended"

Have you used these settings-tweaks tools? Both highly recommended.
"Rhodium Settings Tool"
"HD Tweak"
Rhodium Settings is probably better/easier overall...but HD Tweak does a few fixes that Rhodium doesn't.

Can someone explain this :)

I would really like to try out the v6 script but I need some help understanding.

+1 I have no idea exactly how it works but I use it on every ROM and its bad ass , I think its more or less a built in task killer/manager ,RAM optimizer or something like that.

Download script manager when you first run it hit menu/more/advanced options/config and check off browse as root then back out and go to the v6 script and when you run it check off "run as root" then just pick the setting you want .
If it doesn't stick on a reboot go into ect/init.d by hitting the top file till you see ect and check off both the scripts in there that say 99complete and 99SuperCharger when you hit them just check off run as root and run on boot and hit save don't run them.

cant wait to try it out my self
I'm still lost on it. The guy has like 8 d/l's on that thread. Which one is which??
Its the supercharger with the latest update. Its say something like 6.2.2 update so and so. Then u can get kernel tweak and 3 g tweak. Remember to get ones with most recent update. Really not that hard to figure out
It in it self cannot be explained neither can it creator. since using it on my evo and my wife's Epic. Both no longer lag or freeze up. Simply Awesome!
OK, I got the V6 running now, option 6, balanced. I seen a lot of people use Option 9, but I figured I'd start out slow. So now, this will ruyn on every reboot? Or do I need to go to Script Manager and run it every time? And why is it that it says to use a lower version of Busybox than I have?
Now, what about the kernalizer and 3g tweak? I used faster. I guess I COULD have used fastest?

I tried to run v6 today without downgrading bb and when I went to reboot I got stuck at the splash screen if that didn't happen then I guess your good .
To see if it sticks on reboot just add the script manager widget for that script and run it to see if the settings are the same for some reason I could never run the 3g script with it, it would never let the v6 script run at boot but I'm sure I was doing something wrong.

Mine did reboot just fine, so we'll see.
I had tried to run this once before, and I had deleted the old V6 script I had on the card. Now it shows up in the console along with the 99 supercharger. I can delete the old v6 but is the 99Supercharger there from now, when I just set it up?

I got it deleted. Now, when I hit the widget, it opens, closes and says script does not exist. If I open Script Manager itself, I have a 99 Supercharger in there along with V6, kernel tweaker and 3g?
That makes me think it's not running at boot, since the widget pops up empty

No leave those scripts there they are the scripts from v6 if you want to get rid of v6 then delete them and to see if it stuck on reboot check your numbers I forget what they are called but they look like 6,10,20,30 etc.. See if your previous ones match your current ones if it stuck they will be the same if not you will see the stock ones in current.

##DATA# not working

I'm trying to access the ## settings, data and 72786. However when I type the codes into my dialer, the code disappears from the screen, but nothing pops up. I have quite alot frozen in Titanium, but I went through any that looked like they might be the culprit and nothing changed.
Any suggestions?
Suppose I should say what rom i'm using and such huh? Starburst 1.9.5r and the new rogue 1.1.3 kernel. Though it was not working when on LoStkernel either.
Works for me on stock. What does this setting do anyways?
Sent From My Evo Killer!!!
It lets you change some provisioning info.
On other phones the ## codes are installed by one of the non-descript apks.
Often the get removed either on purpose or by accident.
You should unfreeze everything, reboot, and see if it comes back. If not, either it was never in the ROM or you might have removed it (as opposed to freezing)
Stock ROM definitely has it working, you could go back to that, make the changes you want, then go back to your custom ROM.

Check whether you have com.android.sprintmenu and that out is not frozen.
Telling you from my personal experience as I had the same issue whileI wad experimenting with apks that could be safely removed.
Also, is it a custom dialer or stock? Some ROMs they remove things to make them leaner that effect things such as dialer codes. To be honest, strongsteve made me a custom odexed one and when the dialer codes still worked I couldn't believe it. I wish I knew exactly the line you're looking for but I believe it was mentioned earlier

Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
I did unfreeze everything I had frozen, including the sprint menu, reboot, and still no work. The thing that is kind of confusing to me is lets say I type ##111111# (or any combo of random numbers) and the numbers stay on screen. When I type one of the actual ## codes, it disappears. Back when I was on stock(atleast I think it was stock, was quite a while ago) the code worked.
I'm not 100% certain, but I do believe it's not the stock dialer. @sfhub The information changeable will survive between different roms? Or is it likely the changed info will be over written if I restore?

I don't about every single tiny bit of info, but everything I can remember is stored in NVRAM, which is portable across ROM flashes.
OK i'll give flashing a stock rom a try. Bit of a problem I can forsee.... How will I be able to verify that the info came across roms, if I can't access the menu from custom rom lol

Screen Flicker - No OC or UV

I have not had this problem at all...until maybe a week or go, when it started.
I have screen flicker, sometimes quite bad. I thought I read somewhere that GPU settings may have something do do with it.
Thing is, I haven't changed any settings, or kernels. I'm no what is listed in my sig, and have been for quite a while.
Any thoughts?
You could try disabling HW overlays under developer options in the settings menu.
Disabling hw overlays won't help (much anyways). Turn off auto brightness. Just set your brightness to a usable level. I didn't notice a single flicker the day I turned off auto brightness. The only tradeoff there is you're gonna run through your battery a little more quickly in lower light levels. Wasn't worth it for me, but whatever makes you happy.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
Neither is a go for me.
I never use auto brightness; I've tried both having Disable Hardware Overlays set and not set.
It's strange...I never had this problem until recently.
But, another thing that seems to be the case: I"m not sure it's happening in any app other than Samsung Email.
...
Just went and tried something: opened an email and scrolled in Samsung eMail, and it flashed. Did same in GMail, and it didn't. Maybe it's just something about a recent upgrade on that app. Maybe I'll post a topic on that app and see if anyone else is seeing it.

It's listed in my signature. Stock/Rooted.
I do have an update: I also was having pretty severe flicker/flashing when reading in Aldiko.
Last night I did a TWRP backup; factory reset; restore Data partition. Flashing is improved quite a bit, but still there.
So again, it seems it is happening, for the most part, in just a couple apps: Samsung Email, and Aldiko.

Sorry. Didn't mean to offend. I didn't know sigs don't show up when viewing in mobile. I put the info in the sig in order to prevent people from having to ask, and to prevent from having to type it with every post. I appreciate your telling me it doesn't show up in mobile apps. I never use mobile for forums...typing is to laborious.
IN answer to three, yes, have tried different kernel, although it's been quite a while.
It's ok.
I've had this issue on AOSP ROMs. Only way out was to change ROM.

GUIDE: Make your V30 Faster and Smoother

I"ll keep it short, if you guys have more tips to improve on this please share.
I have been testing this for days on my wife stock v30 and mine. Both started the same with all bloware.
After doing this I actually get
-Better battery
-Less battery drain in standby
-Faster performance
-and MUCH SMOOTHER SCROLLING
It seems to be a few LG apps running in the backgroung that are causing the stutter and lag we have all experience,
some more than others.
Before doing this, go into different apps check speed and scrolling (Instagram, google home, gmail etc) so u can see the before and after.
READ THIS BEFORE DOING:
-LG KEYBOARD IS DISABLE, download a different keyboard (swipe, gboard) and have that already install in your device, if you already have then disregard this
-Also downloaded a different launcher if u are going to disable the stock launcher. I recommend using a different launcher other than the LG.
Let start.
1: Go into play store and download "LG package disabler"
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lgpd.pmanager
I believe is $1.99 but well worth it for what u can actually do
The LG PACKAGE DISABLE is suppost to AUTOMATICALLY download thr plugin needed to have administrator right so u can disable apps. if it doesnt after installation. download it here.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.weblib.mdm
2: BELOW I have attach pics of all apps i have disable. disable all or just the apps u which to disable.
NOTE: I disable Chrome (using Samsung internet beta) which support ad blocker (highly recommended) you can enable chrome in LG PD
3: go to developer option and enable "force gpu rendering"
after all this, Restart your phone. It should be faster and smoother.
Theres a few things you might want ENABLE (like the floating bar) which I have disable since I don't use it.
I did not include the 0.5X animation trick since I like my animation to be at 1.0X (personal choice)

I just used that xml and so far things certainly feel snappier -- will test the battery tomorrow though.
I was getting almost 5hrs of screen on time before, I'm curious how much of an impact disabling all these packages will have.

I just used that xml and so far things certainly feel snappier -- will test the battery tomorrow though.
I was getting almost 5hrs of screen on time before, I'm curious how much of an impact disabling all these packages will have.

save the xml. in ur device. open LG PD. on upper right hand conner u will see 3 dots. when u press that you'll see different options including "import from xml". choose that and select file.
So far so good, just had to re enable a few things that I use but its a lot snappier. Thanks.
i did this as well but now i cant seem to re-enable anything. I uncheck the box and it rechecks it. I imported the xml file

Turns out uninstalling both apps and reinstalling them fixed it. Definitely noticably faster

even if u delete the app and reboot?
I have around 20 apps disabled this way myself, and regularly get over 7 hours SOT. That includes spending 8 hours in poor signal areas and using WiFi Calling.

Right. Once rebooted it didn't work so removed and readded apps. Probably just my lucky day

V30 is great for battery life even with no app disable. This is more about making the snappier. i do get 7 - 8 plus sot on every charge.
I've done this on other phones, so I know how, but when I import and set, the apps don't get disabled. I have to go through manually. Any idea why?
I've been using this since this morning including the XML file. Seems to be working great although I haven't been paying enough attention to know whether or not battery life has improved. At the very least it's worth it to know that I can get rid of all of the bloatware.

Exactly. Just have to be careful that you don't disable too much. You can accidentally disable things that seem like bloat, but somewhere deep in the system settings, another app/feature could be looking for it. I played that game for weeks getting the debloat of my V20 ROMs just right.
the app doesn't work for me for some reason. I run it, import the xml file, it says "107 packages disabled" or something like that, then reboot my phone, and check how many packages are disabled, and it says only 3. Whenever I import the xml file I never see it actually put a checkmark next to any packages to disable.
Any ideas what's going on? I've already uninstalled/reinstalled and it does the same thing. Do I manually need to give the app certain permissions?

I now went through the steps to make the app an owner app from adb, and I successfully was able to run the command (removed all my accounts, ran the command, re-added my accounts). Still, nothing actually disables.
OK, just tried this with Package Disabler (not the LG specific one) and it bricked my phone. I'm now stuck on the white T-Mobile screen and the phone won't load. Does anyone know how I can fix this?
Who can rut tests on just freshly unboxed V30? So we could measure if we can get it faster

You are not bricked. Not from disabling packages. You will have to factory reset to get back up and running,
