[Q] HTC Desire HD Custom ROM - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I've been doing some research on how to successfully flash my phone and put a custom rom on it. I have a Desire HD running 2.2. This is shown in the bootloader:
ACE PVT SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-0.85.0007
Radio-26.03.02.26_M
And from About Phone, I got this:
Software number 1.37.771.3
Now from what I've learnt, I need to downgrade to a earlier version of the software, to 1.32. I looked online, and found that some people said if you used a specific way to turn security off, then certain things won't work.
On looking at some of the threads, some linked to this to turn it off:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537
However, is this the best way to do it. I was going to use this webpage:
http://igyaan.in/2011/01/how-to-root-htc-desire-hd-included-downgrade-from-1-72-405-3-to-1-32/
However, when looking oat the CyanogenMod wiki page for the HTC Desire HD (http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=HTC_Desire_HD:_Rooting), they was advising you not to use Visionary (Which the other guide does advise) and use BusyBox, Superuser and Temporary Root.
So, could someone please help. As I'm getting different advise all over.
Thanks

Use the guides here in XDA. You will get the best support. Places like igyaan.in just copy our guides. So your first step is that radio s-off tool.

Thanks. On the tool, it says it needs:
It will not work on 1.72.405.3 or higher build, or new radio (12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26_M is ok). Downgrade first!!
So as my software number is 1.37.771.3, should that work? My baseband version however is 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_M, which while it says is ok, my baseband version has the letter U just after 140e, so what do I do.
Sorry if this has been answered multiple times before.

Of course it is ok, 1.37 is not 1.72 or higher than it. Use some logic, mate

What about the baseband version though? I understand it's nearly the same version, but as it has another letter in the version name, I thought I'd ask before I go ahead or not.

baseband is completely independent from the Rom. There are only those that go "well" toghether and some that dont. But its different for everyone... so. Yeah, most rom cookers give you a recommendation on RadioRom (=Baseband). I'd go with that first. But you can do the Baseband changing stuff later.

That baseband is ok for the tool.

Hi, I tried using your tool. However on Visionary, I tried to temproot, then it restarted the HTC Sense launcher, then I relaunched Visionary and tried to attempt permroot, but it said I had to have a temproot first.
Any help? Thanks

Try temprooting again. It might take a few tries.

[Q] HELP! Root desire hboot 0.93 without flashing a new rom/possible?

Hello there xda-devs!!
I own an htc desire A8181 (amoled i think) and i fell into the temptation to root it. The problem is that i updated OTA into 2.2 froyo and my hboot now is 0.93.00001 on which the unrevoked method wont work (at leat for me it did not, as it showed : "validation error: backup cid is missing" ). I have installed the modified drivers and my desire is unbranded. I was hoping to find a method to root without losing any data or settings and since everyone showed as an alternative hboot downgrade and custom rom, so i thought " what if i downgraded hboot but i did not flash a new rom ", but the question is "is it possible?"
As you may have figured out, i dont know much about rooting/flashing etc, although i have some experience from flashing kaiser and some others, but i am willing to learn. If anyone could give me a hint/link/suggestion or solution to my problem it would be gratefully appreciated
PS thank you in advance and sorry for my english

Thanks for the quick response! Actually these posts were the first that i read when i first thought of rooting and i believe that i have correctly followed the steps of the how to for the unrevoked (version 3.22 straight from the unrevoked site) and i tried twice on different computers(both running win xp home x86). As for the alternatives on benko's tut, none of them supports OTA 2.2 froyo...
After thought and some reading, I decided that I will downgrade to 2.1, root using unrevoked and then flash to prerooted froyo. Actually, since the point is not to lose settings or data, does anyone know a safe way to back up everything and restore them to the new rom?
I have the same model as you mate and the latest unrevoked worked for me, I downloaded the one straight from their website.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Had you also updated OTA with froyo? If yes then why doesn't it work for me? I am sure that the phone is unbranded. Maybe it's something else and not hboot? My current specs are:
*Hboot:: 0.93.001
*Radio: 5.11.05.27
*Rom: 9.29.405.2 (got the update a week ago)
The only thing that I did not follow in the unrevoked guide, was that I didn't select hboot while loading the drivers, because I could not, no matter how many times I pressed the volume down button.I just waited for it to change to usb plug. Could that be the problem?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Something else I noticed the first time I tried with unrevoked, was that in the revoked window it showed "triumph" for a moment and then it rebooted for the last time and then it showed "validation error..". Strange is that it never showed it again not even on the 2nd or 3rd try...What could that mean?

Thanks for the tip, but this is about BRAVO PVT4 SHIP S-ON while my desire is PVT1 SHIP S-OFF and it says that these are able to root but not flash a Rom, while I can't even root.. and the errors do not match..
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
If you're S-OFF now then you don't need to root - if anything you might be already!
As you hadn't said anything about the rest of the HBOOT I thought I'd mention it but I'm on 0.93 and can root with no issues
And what does it mean? I am already root and I don't know it? And why does then the unrevoked method not work and where is the superuser app?
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
If the Superuser app isn't there then you're not rooted, so that clears that up...
Go read the S-OFF thread in Development and post a query on there. It sounds like you may have a facotry unlocked bootloader which is extremely rare but best go and confirm it in the forum
Ok. I'm going now. Thank you Eddy and the others for your great help
*forgot to mention: the s off I wrote was after the failed tries with unrevoked(before I hadn't noticed if it was on or off) also the phone was destined to be a demo in a store*

If possible switch to Ubuntu and root, its much better.
I have already installed the HTC sync drivers and removed the HTC sync, but I will try reinstalling..You think that through Linux it might succeed?

Hi I recently tried using unrevoked 3.22 and it really didnt seem to work as I got a "validation error: backup cid is mising". However after a reboot I found myself in clockworkmod recovery, so that part seemed to work. However straight afterwards I tried to start the phone, I discovered had no access to SD card and any attempt to access phone via USB also gone, it seems Bluetooth is also gone. However I got the SD card back again using FASTBOOT, has anyone got any ideas how I could possibly get USB back?
Hello cletus. I may not know the solution to your problem, but usually posting some further info about your device(HBOOT, radio etc) and the exact steps you made before that problem, might help someone that would like to help
I really hope that you find a solution to your problem

[Q] Superuser force close after visionary root

Hello all you wonderful guys and girls,
I am a noob and have taken the plunge to root access. Sorry if this is a dumb question.
I have run visionary and temp root worked fine. I then performed perm root and all seemed well. Once rebooted superuser is not functional and returns a FC whenever any apps attempt to use it. Attempting to confirm su access in terminal emulator produces FC. Many apps including gmail also FC. In addition some apps completely disappeared eg ES File Manager/angry birds
I haven't been game to try anything else as I can't find this behaviour described anywhere else. The phone is still functional and it was always my intention to continue to flash to android revolution or similar.
Am I worried over nothing and should proceed with radio s-off? Or am I asking for more trouble by going further?

Please help guys, I'm starting to worry a bit.
Have you tried to install su from market, does that work?
cheers
Ilan
Thanks for the reply marleyb,
There was some weird stuff going on, even the market crashed eventually.
Jkoljo suggested some thing obvious and simple and perform a factory reset. This has fixed the issue and on second attempt, visionary+ has worked and I have permroot! The first go around, visionary must have broken something in my system partition.
Cheers for your input,
Dave
hi Indro9,
I have a Desire HD on the Three network with the same firmware number as you 1.32.861.5
I'm a total noob to the whole ROM/Rooting scene as well and want to root my phone.
I've read many guides saying that if you're running firmware 1.72/1.75 you need to downgrade to 1.32.405.6 or lower but no mention is made anywhere of what you need to do if your running our firmware 1.32.861.5.
Did you downgrade your firwmare before you rooted your phone or was it ok to proceed with your firmware version?
Also which guide did u follow and do you have any words of advice seeing as we have the exact same phones? You help would be greatly appreciated mate.
Thanks

Hey vinpor,
As Marleyb says, visionary+ worked fine with that firmware version.
The guides I followed are as above plus also http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=964996 although without the eng s-off and radio flash.
As far as which ROM to use, Android revolution 4.0 beta 4 is what I have now and am very happy so far. I've already tried a few others and disappointingly cyanogenmod 7 breaks when I activate the wireless although its an experimental. Cyanogenmod 6 worked though was based on 2.2 so I was itching to try a newer ROM.
All in all the process was easy and the support here on xda was great. I got a bit nervous early on (rooting) but the flashing was simple and just as described.
Please give to the people who have worked this out for us and let me know if I can help any further.
Dave
Also, I just want to add that jkoljo's radio s-off program worked just fine on my mac using xp via parallels. Thanks again to jkoljo.
Dave
Thanks for the help guys. Just thought I should let you guys know the rooting process went well & I managed to get radio s-off as well as eng s-off. So far I've tried revolution hd & leedroid both seem much smoother than my stock Rom.

Help DHD Root

Hi, I'm a little lost on the site here..
I have been reading up on rooting my DHD and to be honest i dont know if its possible, if it can what rom do i use and what tools..
Andriod Version 2.3.3
HTC sense version 2.1
Software Number 2.50.405.2
Any help & advise would be great.
Thanks
It is possible. Everything you need is in my signature
So downgrade first, then do Radio S-OFF and optionally ENG S-OFF. Then follow the instructions in Radio S-OFF thread (first post) to flash ClockworkMod and finally a ROM.
ENG S-OFF can be done later, too, so you do not really need to worry about it at this point.
I would recommend Android Revolution HD because it is the most popular ROM for Desire HD.
Thank you very much for the quick response ill get to doing it now
After downgrading you can use this guide (Its by the previous gentlemen as well)

I also recommend Android Revolution HD
Just to confirm I downgraded and rooted yesterday using these guides. Was simple and a brilliant help couldn't have done it without them.

Nope I don't think its possible due to having to place the downgrade zip file on the SD card, and then there is the fact that if its branded you will have to make a goldcard.
Yes I am new to this myself so I apologize if i am wrong but just wanted to try and help you out.

Also think its not possible, after all if there was a way it would be in the guide (a safe way at least). You should wait for your card to arrive and maybe try and get a second card in case you need to make a gold card.

[Q] Downgrading 2.3.5 to rootable version

I recently completed HTC's latest (Android 2.3.5, Sense 3.0) update on my DHD but I've decided to go down the root and custom ROM road now. The first task I need to complete is a downgrade to a rootable version.
I was following jkoljo's [GUIDE] How to downgrade 1.7x/1.8x/2.x to 1.32.405 and I've completed all the steps in Section 1 and 2b, with all commands executing without error, but I'm still not seeing the temproot '#' prompt (it stays '$') and therefore I cannot proceed with Section 3 and complete the downgrade.
Does anyone know if there is any reason why the same instructions would not work for 2.3.5?

I don't think you need to downgrade if you just use the adb way of rooting. It is a universal one so you can push superuser.apk and run an exploit to get root working. Search on xda for tutorials and i hope you'll find them.
Tried AAHK and it worked a charm.
For the record I think the issue may have been that I hadn't set up a goldcard. I was 99% sure my phone was unbranded and I didn't need one

If unlocked with htcdev you need to relock and then run aahk, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1486839&page=3
AAHK is a universal, ONE CLICK tool. It does everything on its own, all you need to do is follow the guide in the thread and in the effen manual.
If you can't find the effen manual or the start code, you're probably better off not rooting at all.
If you run into a problem while running AAHK, you have most likely used a tool (read HTCdev unlock). Use that same tool to re-lock bootloader, then run AAHK as explained above. AAHK supports the latest Ace firmware released by HTC, so yes, 3.12 is supported.
If you still run into an issue, you can seek help at the irc support chan for AAHK.

No one answered in the other thread?
Before continuing, make sure the hack kit supports that version of android that you have.
After you have done that, yes, the hack kit will downgrade your os version. That's the way it works.
But if you are asking that question, I suggest for you to read the thread and the manual. And do a search in either the dhd or inspire section, I can't remember which, there was a member who posted each step and was helped all the way. You can use that as a guide in addition to readen the hack kit instructions and effen manual.

Interested too, as currently I am unable to successfully boot up the latest 4.2.x ROMs!

That is dangerous if your device is running or was shipped with GB version of android. Flashing the ENG S-OFF or a froyo Hboot will miserably mess your bootloader. If you are already S-OFF you can flash the modified ENG S-OFF included in the Hack Kit.
Use the Advanced Ace Hack Kit:

Be careful as somebody suggested because you can end up with a brick. Read the manual included.

Not the Hack Kit, but the options. If he tries to hack kit device again he will get stuck. By flashing ENG S-OFF he will not brick his device, but will have a big headache. To brick the device he needs to flash a wrong partition...

You are right, the last time I used the AAHK did not include an option to flash an ENG S-OFF hboot

That is because the tradicional ENG S-OFF had issues (severily messed) with the bootloader and put it in superslow motion. After a while the Hack Kit included a modified ENG S-OFF compatible with GB shipped devices...saves a lot of headaches
hmm
Thanks 4 ur replies guys. My DHD is Rooted with ENG S-OFF, I just wanted to flash a newer Radio to see if it gives better signal performance but I guess its too risky. I'd better not mess with this Radio S-OFF thingy .. Dont wanna endup with a brick ..
@glevitan - so with the Ace Hack Kit we can attain ENG S-Off and Radio S-Off?
How do we know if our device originally came with Gingerbread or Froyo?
Pretty keen to flash radio (constant drop outs) and give it a go, don't want to do the wrong thing though!
Edit: Ace Hack Kit - is it 1 step Radio S-Off, Eng S-Off etc.?
And can still flash through http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1106324 regardless of Radio S-Off?

Yes, the Hack Kit lastest version will flash ENG S-OFF, but it is not the tradicional ENG but a modified one to work with all devices regardless the Android version they were shipped with.
I guess that currently doesn´t matter what version was your device shipped with but the one it is running at the moment. Mostly all devices have been updated and so have the bootloaders, so the risk is for all the people who actually updated. The best is to treat your device as shipped with GB always just to avoid a headache.
You can always flash a radio in the PD98IMG.zip way, that it is the safest. Always make sure that you check the md5sum of the file and that the radio is for your device, as stated in that thread. You are S-OFF if you used the Hack Kit some time ago, but ENG S-OFF if you did it in the last year...If you are just S-OFF (check what it says in the hboot top left corner), you can flash the ENG S-OFF from the HAck Kit options.
I always flash radios in the PD98IMG way, safest thou not faster.
:good:
Maybe I'm missing a step there?
It says "parsing", and the radio doesn't update :-\
Then the phone boots in safe mode...

If the file is parsed and you are not prompted to update, then your sdcard might be corrupted (have you tried using a different one?) or the file is not named PD98IMG.zip correctly.
Ill try a different SD card,
The name of the file is IMG not 1MG yes? I named the file correctly, inside the ZIP archive is just the radio.img file.
Not sure why it did that, before it says parsing it comes with PD98DIAX or something and "no file found" then it lists PD98IMG and parsing.
Unfortunately I havent had much luck with this phone
I remember the Desire being a similar radio update process.

inside the zip you should have the img file and a .txt file, otherwise it won't flash

Ah I see, well the txt file is missing - ill have to check the radio thread again to see what the go is as I downloaded the radio zip archives from there.
Thanks!
