When I go into Settings / About Phone / System updates, after a brief "Checking for available update" message the phone greets me with this:
Checking for updates is currently not available.
Try again later.

It doesn't say there are no updates, it says checking for them is not possible. Phone has been doing this since I bought it a month ago.
Is this a normal message that everyone else gets when there are no updates? Or should I be worried that my phone will not be able to check for and perform an OTA update for Froyo?
System version: Moto_Version.2.51.1.MB525.Retail.en.CEE
Carrier: T-Mobile Hungary
I have 2 defys. One running custom ROM and one stock (rooted with custom recovery). The stock one says the same message has yours. I called and asked T-Mo if this would affect me getting 2.2 if/when its released and was told not to worry about it. Not sure what causes it but I'm set up to receive an email notification if/when the upgrade is released so I'll find out then. Sorry I cant tell you why it does it but atleast you know you're not alone.

Update – HTC Desire Firmware Over The Air (FOTA) update
In our commitment to providing you with the best user experience, we are pushing out a new firmware update to your phone. Your phone will receive a notification of this update when it is made available. Simply press OK to accept the update via a data connection such as Wi-Fi or GPRS/3G. After installing the update, you can confirm a successful update by confirming the Software Number (From the Home Screen go to MENU> Settings> About Phone> Software information> Software number). The new software number after the update will be 1.15.405.4 for an HTC phone.
Haven't had it pushed out, but have done a manual update.
Went on fine.
Looks like us T-Mobile users are gonna have to wait ages.
I wanted to try an update before having the handset swapped for the pink hue issue. ffs
Yep, was notified there was an update available yesterday evening.
Downloaded and installed, can't notice any differences on the front-end, must have done something though!
Just noticed that there is another post RE this -

No, T-Mobile not done any updates as yet.
I've tried the Manual update and there is nothing as yet.
So my phone just notified me there was a system software update available but that,s all the info I got. Pretty sure its from Telus but....
Here's the question: Now I assume it would be bad for me to dl and install this update on my rooted HTC Desire but what is it? How can I find out, by calling my provider I assume? And should I unroot, install update and re-root?
I have searched the threads with no luck and I figure it's because it was just released in BC perhaps....
I know that most of these are terrible noob questions but better to ask than to figure out what to do with my expensive new paperweight....
Thanks in advance!
whoaa im on telus in BC too! lol
ok anyways I didn't get a call though so i don't think that was a genuine call
maybe check for system software updates in settings?
No updates were available for me. Have you already done the 2.2 OTA update from telus?
Update
I did the 2.2 update in October and this was a notification through my phone and I declined it and checked via the settings/about phone/software update and it showed up again.
I'm going to call Telus this afternoon and ask.
What software version does it say it is?
And no, don't try to flash it on the rooted ROM
I figured best not to from what I've read before. It doesn't say what it is.
it was sent and that's all that matters!
hmmm, OTAs normally say what version number they're updating to
Okay now it gets weirder...
I just went to recheck and make sure there was no other info and now it says my system is up to date?
WTF!? Perhaps I need a reinstall of my rom and and a nice reboot!
it was sent and that's all that matters!
Right now I do not have any sprint service... I have WIFI for Vo-IP, Data, I actually get picture mail from sprint since its tied to my google voice account so it comes from my sprint number but i cant reply back on the sprint number or i'll get a error message.
but to sum it up, they said I can update to gingerbread manually by Menu> software update> htc update
but i want to know can i upgrade (like I said above) or receive the OTA even if my sprint service is shut off...
I don't see how you could without Sprint service, but that is not to say that you can't. If you're rooted, don't worry about. Just wait for the rooted OTA update.
posting & replying from my EVO 4G

You sure can, the updates come from "sprint" but are actually developed by the OEM. Of course you will have to do this over WIFI. If your rooted just what for a ROM made from the official build and flash it.
thank you both but at the moment I am not rooted... i chose not to root it at the moment... probably later in the future.

Personal choices are respected, but when you decide to root, go with unrevoked. Quick and painless. But I will say root BEFORE you do an OTA, as I would expect unrevoked to have to be updated to work with the new update.
I'm in Cincinnati Ohio, and I have a *completely stock and non-rooted* Note 2. I have been trying to get this OTA update since it came out, but no dice so far.
It basically just says that no update is available - the same message everyone else reported. Am I just in an area where it has not been rolled out for *anybody*? Or is there something going on?
I know on my Nexus 7 I had to clear the data on a google service to get it to notice when the Kit Kat update showed up - anything like that for the Note 2?
Thanks.
P.S.
I have searched both XDA and with google, and completely read through the main large thread in this forum relating to the update.
I don't want to load the update in any other way that will wipe my phone. I understand that many of you don't feel like waiting for an OTA, and download these updates and load them manually. I do not want to do that. So, this post is only seeking information as to how I can get the OTA update through the update mechanism in the phone.

Have you tried updating through KIES?

No, I don't even have it installed. If I decide to install KIES, does it do the update without wiping the phone - just like the OTA?
I just don't like installing vendor crapware on my computers unless it is absolutely necessary. Which is why I don't own electronics with a "i" prefix.
Ok, I installed KIES and attached is an error message it gives relating to a firmware update

Crap, nevermind. I got this phone via trade and it turns out that the guy I got it from had rooted it at some time in the past... So no OTA for me. I'll accomplish it the way all the other folks have.
Thanks
Hey guys, I hope someone can help me with this problem.
So, as title says, I have a problem updating my Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini (GT9195) Black Edition to the latest Android OS. I bought it a week ago and It runs 4.2.2 now but when I go to "About device > Software Update > Check for update" it always says that "there is no software update available at this moment". I installed Kies, connected the device via USB cable and checked for update (as a friend told me to do) ... same result.. It showed me I have the latest OS version installed. I thought that maybe 4.4.2 did not yet arrived for the users from my country but what I don't understand is why doesn't it update to 4.3 ? I see there is a 4.3 official update available and on samsung' site it shows the phone runs 4.3 JB+. That's why I don't get what is wrong with my phone.

Nothing is wrong. Each region has they all specific product code, different carrier/network could has also they own code. If it says no update, that just means no official updates. If you really want the update, check: http://samsung-updates.com/ for official firmware updates. Or simply use a custom ROM - it is one of the reasons why people chose to use custom ROM.

Well bought this phone free of contract, it's not locked in any network and I'm from Romania, Europe. 4.3 update got released many months ago so I really don't understand.... is there something about my country.
Manually installing an official ROM from Samsung-updates will not remove my warranty?

You really need to ask the local Samsung that question...
If you have Knox, unfortunately it will void your warranty, so check see if your phone has Knox buy going to download mode.
