I'm still pretty new to Android, coming from BlackBerry. Anyway, I just rooted my EVO using Unrevoked3 and I want to flash to the Mikfroyo ROM, but I'm completely lost on what do next. Do I install Unrevoked Forever on top of unrevoked3 and if so, how do I go about doing that. All I've seen searching threads is that I should probably use ROM Installer, but I guess I'm suppose to have S-ON?.. What's my next step after Rooting with Unrevoked3?
No. You are rooted already. All you have to do now is simply download the Rom you want to flash and place it on your SD card. Afterwards, turn off your phone. Simultaneously press the down volume button and the power button until your phone starts. You will enter the bootloader screen. You should see S-OFF. That means your security is off a/k/a you're rooted. Anyway, if you have a PC36IMG.zip file on the root of your SD card, the bootloader will automatically detect it and prompt you to install. Disregard. Anyway, select recovery and then you will be taken to the recovery screen. I'm assuming you have Clockworkmod as your recovery. Anyway, I don't remember the menu structure of it because I use amon RA as my recovery. Anyway, go to the backup/restore menu and create a nandroid backup of your current setup. In case you don't like the Rom you're about to flash, you can always return your device to the way it was prior to flashing by simply restoring the nandroid backup. After you've made your nandroid backup, go to the wipe menu and wipe EVERYTHING except the SD card itself. Afterwards, flash the Rom you chose and then reboot. Be patient during the first boot after flashing. Enjoy your new Rom..

I don't have PC36IMG.zip on my card. Is that gonna be a problem? Is there somewhere I can download it?.. I backed up phone numbers and I used exuninstall (I've used before after wiping my phone) to backup my apps (is that pretty much the same as creating a nandroid?)

nope actually saves you some annoyance not having that pc36img.zip on there. a nandroid isn't the same as backing up stuff seperately. nandroid copies exactly what is on your phone's flash memory atm onto the sdcard, in .img formats. these are just in case you don't like the rom you flash. MAKE SURE TO HAVE AT LEAST ONE BACKUP OF THE WIMAX PARTITION WIMAX.IMG IS THE ONLY NON-RECOVERABLE PART OF THE PHONE. for backing up, i'd use titanium backup. just hit menu, batch, and select backup all user apps +data. DON'T BACKUP SYSTEM DATA. just backup contacts by going to the people app, hitting menu, and import/export. choose export, and backup whatever you want.
since you used unrevoked, i assume you are using clockworkmod recovery. this is annoying to both you and developers who enjoy writing in amend scripting (cwm 3.0+ only reads edify, ick). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026 downlaod the pc36img.zip (here's where they come in handy) and put it on the root of your sdcard. then boot into bootloader, and accept the update. say no to the reboot. and choose recovery from the menu. next chance you get, remove or rename the pc36img.zip so it doesn't prompt you to update every time you boot into bootloader. now go to backup/restore, and make a nandroid backup. MAKE SURE YOU ALWAYS HAVE AT LEAST 1 OF WIMAX BACKED UP IN SEVERAL PLACES LIKE PHONE, COMP, ONLINE BACKUP, ETC. IT'S IMPORTANT. then, back out to the main screen, and go to wipe. wipe data, cache, and dalvik cache. do this every time you flash a new rom btw. if you flash something ontop of a rom (theme, kernel, anything else, addon, etc) then just wipe cache and dalvik cache.
so now choose flash zip from sdcard, find the zip on your card, and flash it! it'll install. then choose reboot from the menu, and you're all good.
just ask if you have any other questions.

It doesn't matter. If you want to put them both on your card you can or if you want to install the PC36IMG and then go into recovery and choose usb/ms toggle(or something like that and delete the PC36IMG and then add Mikfroyo you can do it that way. After that just wipe data, cache and davlik cache and then choose flash zip from sdcard then choose zip then scroll to Mikfroyo and install. Use the volume buttons to scroll and the power button to select. If you leave PC36IMG on the sdcard it is not a big deal other than an inconvenience because every time you boot into bootloader it will scan and ask if you want to update.
PC36img.zip is a file name that your bootloader recognizes as an update to install, so the only reason people say to get rid of it or not is if you have a file named that in root of SD, everytime you go into bootloader, it'll ask to install it.
(I didn't quite get that when I first rooted, so I'm just throwing it out there in case you don't either)

First, make sure your battery is AT LEAST at 50% before doing this. You don't want to run out of juice while it is writing or your phone will get bricked.
Secondly, I recommend you use Amon RA recovery. The easiest way to get it is to download ROM manager from the market, and scroll to the bottom of the app options to where it says "flash alternate recovery". This will install Amon recovery over the clockwork recovery that unrevoked installed on your phone. In recovery mode, you use the volume up/down buttons to navigate the menu and the power button to select your choice.
1) Download the rom, and place the zipped file in the root of your SD card.
2) Power off your phone, and power it back while holding volume down to boot into recovery mode.
3) If you haven't already, from here, create a NAND back-up of your phone in case something goes wrong. Make sure you check the box that says Wimax and you back up your Wimax keys, too. (This takes 5-10 minutes; let it finish)
4) From the recovery menu, wipe cache twice, dalvik cache twice, and data. (check advanced for the option to wipe dalvik)
5) From the main recovery menu, choose the "flash zip from SD card" and then look for the rom file you put on your SD card. Highlight it and use the power button to select it and flash it onto your phone. (This will take a while, too.....let it finish)
6) Reboot your phone and enjoy your new rom!
You can follow this process to flash just about any zip file, including custom kernels, miscellaneous fixes, certain themes, custom boot animations, etc. It is recommended that you flash one item at a time. Do not flash a bunch of things without rebooting the phone; do one at a time.
REMEMBER TO DO A NAND BACK-UP FIRST! If anything happens, this will make your life MUCH easier to get your phone back to how it is now without going on a much bigger mission.
I kinda figured that about the battery, cause when I used to flash CFW on my PSP I had to have the battery at least 75%... But what has me confused is the PC36IMG.zip. It wasn't on my SD after rooting, and I'm not trying to update anything, so do I still need to download and flash it or can I just go right to backing up nandroid and instill the rom?

The PC36IMG.zip file is named that way so your bootloader can recognize it. However, you are booting into a custom recovery, not the bootloader, so it doesn't matter if you have that file on your SD card or not. From the way you are talking, it doesn't sound like you even know what is inside that PC36IMG.zip, so I would just delete it. Or is it the rom file itself that is named that way? If so, you can still flash it via recovery even if it's named PC36IMG.zip......that's not a problem.
Just make a NAND back up, wipe and flash the rom. If something goes wrong, you can always power the phone on holding volume down to boot into the recovery to restore your NAND and start over.

Okay, I'm going to try to give it a shot.
For right now, forget the PC36IMG.zip. It was needed to switch recoveries, but it seems like it might be confusing you. Anything that flashes through the bootloader has to be named that, not just recoveries. It is suggested to use Amon Ra because some ROMs won't flash with Clockwork, which is what unrevoked puts on your phone. Amon Ra, in my opinion (and obviously other's) is a better alternative. To get Amon Ra - to avoid any problems with flashing - download Rom Manager if you haven't already. Choose "flash alternate recovery". When it's done, power off your phone then boot into the bootloader. Choose recovery, then do your backup. In Amon Ra, just keep the boxes checked, and then choose backup. After that's finished, go back to nandroid backup & uncheck the boxes that are already checked (with the power button), then check Wimax only and backup again. Once you're finished backing up, wipe & flash.
You don't have to use Amon Ra, it's just highly suggested. It's better to go ahead and do it now, since Ra won't restore backups made with Clockwork and vice versa - it'll save you from having to go back/forth later. Plus, I'm not sure how/if Clockwork backs up your wimax.

If you had one, fine and if you didn't have one, fine. Disregard, either way. Remember, I don't know what you may have attempted to flash or the contents of your SD card. I was simply trying to be as thorough as I could. Everyone who has replied to your post has basically told you the exact same thing. Now, disregard any mention of the PC36IMG.zip file and follow the remaining steps and you will be fine.

I also just recently rooted for the first time with Unrevoked, did the back up with Clockwork and can confirm that the folder with the backup has a file called wimax.somecode.img if that's what you're thinking of.
x313x, that page jstalford posted has some great info, and downloading Rom Manager, Titanium Backup and Busybox (was needed for one of those programs, don't remember which) made things much easier.

I understand. Anyway, if you want to flash amon RA, simply download the zip file and place it on the root of your SD card and then power off. Simultaneously press the down volume button and the power button until your EVO starts. The bootloader will automatically detect the zip file and prompt you to install it. Follow the easy prompts to install. Installation of amon RA takes less than 10 seconds. Afterwards, reboot into recovery or to your homescreen.

ok, i think i'll step out of this thread after this (the dude's got you) but just going to try and clarify what a pc36img.zip is.
a pc36img.zip is what bootlaoder recognizes as an update. it can contain anything. a system, a kernel, a recovery, anything. maybe even everything. so keep them organized. they are all different. like the one i was telling you to flash installed amon-ra recovery. it's helpful to then delete or rename the file, so bootloader doesn't ask you to update next time you boot to bootloader.
is that any better? hah it's sorta hard to explain.
I got it up and running a little bit ago and it's running great with no problems. And it really was as easy as you all said. You guys are awesome, thanks for putting up with me

I recently use unrevoked3's "painless root and reflash" to root my Evo 4G. The backup, rooting, and etc went smoothly. I installed Titanium Backup to start removing the Sprint's apps and found that I did not have root privileges. Then I proceeded to reboot into HBOOT. I was prompted to perform an "update" and thought that was my recovery image. It appears that I'm now back to a "stock" image, but I think there is still an image available that unrevoked/ClockworkMod made. It seems that I can't use ROM Manager because I don't have root permissions... ugh.
I'm sure this is a somewhat similar situation and apologize, but I was only able to find bits and pieces and I'd really like to know if there is a way for me to restore or if I should just move on.

It seems that you would need to re-root. I appears that the PC36IMG was an RUU of a stock image; always check or know what is inside that file because it could be anything. Does your bootloader say s-on or s-off?
My bootloader says s-off. I will try rerooting, but if I'm using unrevoked again, I don't want it overwriting my original image... right?
Okay well hold on, if you go into the bootloader and go into recovery, what happens?
I get a picture of the phone w/ a triangle and exclamation mark... pressing "volume up" and "power" gives me Android system recovery <2e> options: {reboot system now, apply sdcard:update.zip, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition}.
Err... is update.zip my backup image?!
Edit: it also says "E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command"
So its as I thought, rooted but no recovery. Flash the attached file in the bootloader, don't change the name or extract it. Make sure its the only PC36IMG on your sdcard, once it detects it, apply the update, reboot, reboot into the bootloader > recovery, and you'll be on amon_ra 2.3.

Followed the instructions, and I'm looking at the "amon_ra 2.3" recovery screen now. Am I correct in assuming that I don't actually have the backup that I thought unrevoked made, and I should use this to create my backup once I've finished re-configuring and etc.?
edit: Doh... looks like I might have made a mistake in trusting the error from the application. It wasn't a problem with having permissions, it was with not having BusyBox. Wonderful. Now I suppose I need to find a way to get back to where I was.
btw, if there is a way I can buy you a coffee (or other beverage), let me know .
rooted my htc evo 4g with android 2.2 using unrevoked3. Got superuser permissions. All rooted apps work well but I have one main issue. The issue is that when I use the ROM manager to backup current rom the phone cuts off and then goes to the white htc evo screen and stays there. I have to pull the battery and restart my phone so it can work. My understanding is that one must back up current ROM before installing other ROMs. The steps I am taking are as follows: 1. Go into ROM manager 2. Flash clockworkmod recovery 3. backup current rom. This is where my phone gets stuck on the white htc evo page. Someone please help so I can enjoy my phone. Thanks
in rom manager almost at the bottom o the menu there is an option that says flash alternative recovery or something similar and underneath it it says amon ra, flash that recovery it will put amon ra recovery on your phone, after that you reboot into recovery(turn phone off and then turn it on while pressing volume down, once in recovery you go to backup and select all, then back it up and after that you can wipe cache, dalvik, and data(you see those options when you click wipe in recovery mode) then you can go ahead and flash your rom

First of all Welcome! Now, just boot into recovery.Shut phone off>hold down the "Volume -" and press the power button> when in bootloader use the "Volume -" button to navigate to "recovery" and press the power button. You should now be in recovery now read the menus and navigate to where you can back up the rom.

Okay, so you followed his instructions exactly? When you used rom manager to flash alternate (amon ra) recovery, did that complete successfully? If so, when you shut the phone down, and boot to the bootloader, then selected recovery, is that where you hang at the white htc evo 4g screen? It doesn't successfully boot to recovery, just hangs at the splash screen? If I understand you correctly, and that is accurate, then you should try flashing a recovery from the bootloader. Download the PC36IMG I'll attatch. Place it on the main directory of your SD card. (Now would also be a good time to put the ROM of your choice on your sd card as well). Be sure it's named exactly PC36IMG. Shut your phone off. Hold power and volume down button to get to the bootlaoder. Wait a few seconds and it should ask you to update. Select Volume Up. This recovery is Amon Ra V2.3. Once that's done flashing, don't reboot. Select no on reboot, and then choose 'recovery'. Do you successfully boot to recovery? If yes, go to 'wipe' Wipe data/factory reset, cache, dalvik cache, boot, and system. You can also flash calkulin's format all.zip if you'd like. Once you're done wiping, go back to the main screen of recovery, and select 'flash zip from sd card' and then 'choose zip from sd card'. Then find the ROM that you put on your sd card, choose it, and flash it. Once done, reboot. That *should* work. If that's exactly what you already tried, I apologize, and report back, we'll come up with some other things to try. If you didn't try that, try it step by step.
when i am in recovery the options i see close to what your instructions state is backup/restore. i clicked on that but i dont see a select all. I see nandroid backup, nandroid restore, backup google proprietary system file and restore google prorietary system files. what do i choose. Thanks

huh.. I'm suspecting its your recovery thats bad. Download THIS and place it on the root of you sd card. Boot the phone into the bootloader by powering the phone down, then press the power and the volume down buttons at the same time> Once the phone boots into the bootloader the phone will automatically recognize the zip file. It will ask if you would like to update, select yes and let it do it's thing and you will be good to go.
you then can follow the instruction we posted earlier and hopefully it'll let you get into recovery mode to backup and flash roms.

That was correct! You want to select 'nandroid backup' > That is what you are creating. Once you select that, it will give you a list of what you want to backup. Check all the boxes, and then select 'perform backup'. It should take a few minutes to complete, and you'll see a bunch of ........ Maybe 4-6 lines of them. Once done, you can then do your wipe and flash your ROM, if you'd like

See my last post. But you select nandroid backup. Then, as I said, it will ask you what you want to backup. Check every box. Then select 'perform backup'

nandroid backup... and then backup google propritary then wipe the first 3 listed under the wipe menu and also flash the attached zip. Then you may flash the rom of your choice.
it stated that backup is complete. Do I need to reboot the phone? As far as wiping the phone, is that something that i can do in the ROM manager app? I ask these "silly" questions because i am fairly new to this. Some of the language is foreign to me.

No you dont need to reboot your phone. No you cannot wipe in rom manger. Do everything in recovery, learn to love recovery. It's your new best friend. Backup, wipe, and flash roms in recovery to save you a headache.
Is your SD card full? I had the same thing happen to me and realized I had no space available. You might try deleting some previous nandroid backups or other large files. If your card isn't full, then the other posters have the right advice.
EDIT: Looks like you got it working before I could submit my post. Hope the rest goes smoothly for you.

No his sd card isn't full or at least shouldnt be since this will be his first nandroid backup.

As blakeboy said, forget about ROM manager. You are far better off doing everything manually, in recovery. It's far more reliable, and is very easy to use anyways. And as was already posted, use the CalkulinFormat all.zip before you flash a ROM (after you make your backup, of course)

no, wipe and then flash the zip then flash your rom then reboot
the reason you wipe then flash is because the zip adds extra wiping to ensure a clean flash of the new rom so to minimize the chance of a problems occurring.

You should be able to go back to the main screen of recovery, and then go to wipe. Do your wipes, and then go back to 'flash zip from sd card' And then choose your rom and flash it. Once it's done flashing, then reboot.

I am sorry if this has already been answered somewhere, but I searched pretty thoroughly and I couldn't find a solution
I am trying to S-OFF an HTC Desire for a friend of mine and install CyanogenMod using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084.
We rooted the phone without any issues, but before going through Alpharev I decided to make a nandroid backup through the phone's original recovery image (just as advised on Alpharev's site: "We try to leave the current ROM and datastructures completely intact. It is, however, advised to ALWAYS nandroid backup your phone before you run this procedure.
You will then always have a correct/current backup to fall back on in case something breaks."). So I just went into the Backup and Recovery menu and I chose backup.
Unfortunately after backing up, the phone went into a boot loop. We tried taking-out the battery and even doing a hard reset but nothing helped. Eventually we flashed the original RUU from O2 (it's an O2 Germany phone) and this fixed the issue.
I am a bit concerned since I wasn't able to find anyone who had the same problem and it is a bit weird that the phone should go into a boot loop without even installing another ROM or anything - just trying to do a backup of the stock ROM. I am thus a bit hesitant to go on with the S-OFF...
Any help would be deeply appreciated!
Well, first of all, you don't need to be S-Off to install CyanogenMod7. Only root. Usually, people do S-Off so they can change the Boot Splash image.
Make a Gold Card for your SD. Some Desire's need it, some don't. Better safe than sorry.
Secondly, after root, I would goto the market and install ROM Manager. Then flash to the latest Clockwork Recovery.
Then,I would make sure I have a recent Recovery image (NandBackup)
Download Gapps.zip to the root of the SD.
Download the CyanogenMod7 to the root of the SD, boot phone to recovery, Wipe cache memory, also goto Advanced and wipe the Delvik memory.
Then Install from SD, do the CM7, then after it finishes, Select Install from SD again, and install the Gapps.zip
Why your backup failed, who knows. I suppose you were using Unrevoked?

I suppose, there was some code that didn't get deleted due to the rooting process, if you used unrevoked. Although it rarely happens, sometimes it does.
Or maybe it didn't like some Application. Who knows. All it takes, is 1 peice of bad code.
With AlphaRev, although many use it, I believe it changes your bootloader code.
And, you can sometimes have problems as well.
But follow the steps I mentioned, and you should be ok.
Just make sure you create and use the Gold Card first.
The boot loop is a common issue with the first nandroid. All you had to do was restore the nandroid you just made.

Right - I thought about that, but then I was hesitant, because I figured if it went into a boot loop then it probably did not create the backup image properly... So can I still restore the backup image now? It is saved on the sdcard so it should be intact after the RUU, right?
It "should be", but, one can only assume so.
Typically, I make a couple of backups each week. One never knows. Yeah, it will tell you successsful. but, better safe than sorry.

I did a NanDroid backup and it still won't restore the rom I had before.It gives me an error " Error while flashing boot image" . I am using Clockword Mod v2.5.0.1. I tried updating the PC36IMG.zip file in hboot, but still won't boot. I am fully able to get into recover and hboot. Will someone please help!
did you name it pc26img? it should be PC36IMG.

Well that was probably the most confusing method you could've tried to update.
The reason you're most likely getting the boot.img error, is because the nandroid backup that you're trying to restore, was created when you were on a different bootloader. If you followed the method that you linked to, I'm pretty sure that the new bootloader would've been installed with that. Since it's a different bootloader, your nandroid backups (from when you were on an older bootloader) will not work. You'll have to get the phone booting, and then start making a 'new set' of nandroid backups. Your old ones will most likely be no good now.
I would suggest that you download a new rom, and try to flash it after performing a full and thorough wipe. I would suggest using Amon Ra to perform a full wipe and do your flashing. I'll attatch a PC36IMG of Amon Ra version 2.3. Put that file on your sd card, then boot to the bootloader, and select yes to let it flash. Then boot to recovery, wipe everything in there, except for your SD card. Then flash a rom from scratch and you should be good
Great will try this right now. I was using rom manager to do all backups and restores also. If that helps any.

I would suggest using Amon Ra from now on, and flash everything manually from within recovery, instead of using ROM Manager. And by the way, the recovery you're going to install will NOT work with ROM manager. You can still download roms using rom manager if you'd like, but don't try to use it to actually flash anything for as long as you're on Amon Ra recovery.
So if you're not familiar with recovery, you should be able to figure it out relatively quickly. Just boot to recovery, selct 'wipe'. Select wipe all user data. Also wipe system and boot, and sd ext if your card is partitioned. Then go back to the main menu in recovery, and select 'flash zip from sd card'. Then find the rom that you loaded onto the sd card, select it and flash it. If its an AOSP rom, don't forget to flash teh gapps. Good luck.
EDIT: I would use one of these ROMS if you're looking for the stock OTA updated.

I was able to make a backup/restore on my phone. I initially rooted it just fine and was able to make backup/restore in case something happened. But I was so set on flashing team dirt Ics Roman I used advice from other members about using smelkus recovery. I attempted to use this recovery but it didn't work. So I went back to my original recovery and now all i can do is back up nandroid......before I was able to go thru all my backups as they were presented in date/time format.
How do i fifix this?

What do u mean when u say the recovery didn't work. Did u flash thru hboot or thru terminal? There's no way it "doesn't work". Did u verify md5?
I flashed recovery thru fastboot and put pc36img on root of card and went to update it with hboot. All it did was say "parsing pc36img.zip" so i wwent back to my other recovery I believe was Amron.ra...
