Sorry if this has been answered, I searched and found nothing.
While going on a trip I attempted to use the GPS while my phone was plugged in.
Seems like a common enough thing to do.
Anyhow within an hour my phone got so hot that it shut itself down. Didn't realize it was getting that hot or I would have shut it off before then.
Also, I am having sound issues. The phone is a bit laggy and if I'm listening to music it will interfere with the sound when I flip screens, or when the phone goes to sleep or wakes up.
Is anyone else experiencing these types of issues?
I am using the kernel that it came with...
Also setCPU -> OnDemand
Min: 200
Max: 1000
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have my phone on the car charger with pandora and gps nav...
And the battery still dies
Guess using everything at once uses more power than the car charger provides lol
And I get the audio on turn on / off... haven't noticed on rotate though

Use the kernel linked in the second post or VisionKernel.

hey guys.
i'm experiencing something weird with Pandora. I always stream over WiFi (no other choice) and typically while having the phone plugged in to the charger. but i like having music while i shower so i was putting pandora to stream while the phone had the screen off just sitting there on the bathroom (Away from water of course).
for a while this worked fine, but a couple of weeks ago something happened that makes pandora stop playing. sometimes it stops and never resumes playing until i turn on the screen and press play. sometimes it skips from song to song only playing 1-3 seconds of the song.
this only happens while it's in the shower. i've tried having setCPU's profiles for screen off but on and off, and same thing either way.
what is causing this? can i fix it?
When using Pandora on the computer it will ask you if you're still there after a certain amount of time and if you don't click yes, it will stop playing until you click it. Maybe it is something similar? I play mine while I set up for work for about an hour or so with my headphones, but I haven't a long period of time without skipping a song or changing the station, so I haven't had the issue.
Pandora will skip to the next song if you loose data for a second. Probably dont have as strong of a signal in the bathroom.

i dont think that's it. the bathroom is within 15 feet of the wireless router. the phone gets all bars
I have the same issue, and the signal is strong.
Are you running any profiles that underclock the CPU when the screen is off? I stopped having that issue when I stopped using setcpu.

Are you running Juice Defender? If Pandora is not on the list of apps, you will lose data connection when the screen goes off.

I had setcpu profiles to overclock the phone with screen off...but that was the first thing I disabled in trying to diagnose the problem...
And no I'm not using juice defender or any othersuch program...
So what else?

Are you running 1.5? Mine would do something similar on 1.4, but 1.5 fixed it

If you are using a kernel that undervolts it is possible you are losing signal even though you have full bars. In fact, that is the reason that I no longer run the undervolt kernels. The problem is that you have full bars when the screen is on, because when the screen is on it is probably not undervolted. Once the screen goes off though, the undervolting kicks in, and when the phone is undervolted to less than stock voltage it significantly reduces the sensitivity of the radios. I have a 5 mile stretch on the way home that I get about four bars on with a stock kernel and never have Pandora drop a song or stop. If I run an undervolted kernel, on the other hand, Pandora stops repeatedly in that 5 mile stretch, not playing any more than 10 seconds of any song, unless I keep repeatedly touching the screen to keep it on.
Im using king clicks #6 I believe...is that one of them fancy kernels things?

The default battery-saving measures of Android include turning off WiFi after physical phone innactivity (meaning, a few minutes after the screen turns off). Some ROMs let you change the WiFi sleep policy, some don't.
I'm going to try this out today...got a lot of research to do so I'm going to run pandora with screen off and unplugged at the library...lets see how it goes...

Hello,
I need a simple app to help with an overheat problem on my EVO.
Let me recap the problem simply, when the phone gets too warm it will shut down and vibrate five times and then blink the green LED. The phone then cannot be turned back on until the battery has cooled down.
I have found a half solution, if my phone is in Airplane mode then it will not shut down even when it is warm. So, to avoid shutdown, I need a simple widget. The widget should be 2x1. On the left side, a simple battery temp monitor. On the right side, an airplane icon to let me know if the phone is in airplane mode or not.
What I need the app to do is to automatically switch the phone to airplane mode if the the phone gets above a user designated temperature. The only exception to the automatic airplane mode should be if the phone is in a current call. Seems like the phone will let me finish a call before shutting down due to heat. Hopefully the app can throw the phone into airplane mode immediately when the call ends. But if that exception is too difficult, the primary functionality would still be worth it.
This is my first app request, so I don't know if I'm being specific enough. I also know that other people can use this app. Hopefully someone out there can help us all out.
Thanks
There is an app called tasker that should be able to do that for you. At least untill someone can build an app for you.

Not sure what your doing to over heat the phone, but I would try to fix the problem instead of usong a work around. It sounds like you have an inefficient kernel or its too far ovrrclocked. I'm thinking continual use in this overheated state will cause unrepairable damage to your phone.
Just looked at Tasker, from what I can tell it does not have Temperature as an event.
And the problem cause is not my kernel, from what I can tell. I've tried a few different kernels on a couple different mods. I've tried underclocking and under volting. Nothing seems to help. From what I've read, I might have a faulty sensor.
I had a hell of a time with cm7 and the jit compiler. Poor battery life and running warm even when browsing the web. Not sure what your running but it may be as easy as tapping a checkbox.

It's a hardware cpu sensor calibration issue, according to Sprint tech Lokifish Mars. Search for my thread in Evo General.
I avoid shutdowns by keeping battery temp < 39°C.
mine overheated when i was charging and using hotspot/tether, somehow after i wiped my sd card and everything else and installed the rom again it never overheated again.
somehow the more apps get installed the more the chanse some of them be are gonna be running in the backgroung, who knows...

Some phones overheat and shutdown regardless of installed apps, rom, or kernel. My Evo consistently shutsdown at 39°C, even when running bare aosp w/zero apps installed.
It's only an issue for me when playing games, using the phone in high ambient temps, and flashing mods. Keeping the battery & cpu cool with a fan or ac vent is the only way I can flash mods or roms.
Elixir is a free app on the market, you can make customizable widgets (1x1 up to 4x1), one for temp, the other to toggle airplane mode.
I use it to monitor temp, battery, cpu freq, and cpu %, and to keep an eye on ram.
Works well.
I've got the E4GT. My phone will no longer turn on, show any sort of notification light, no sounds are made, etc. I'm pretty sure it was caused by underclocking the CPU to 800mHz but I've done this in the past with no issues. I set it with RomToolkit (and have had success going from 500mHz - 1600mHz) with the PowerSave on 500mHz min -> 800mHz max. I had my phone reboot to save the changes, and now it doesn't even seem like it's attempting to turn on. It is fully charged (at least 90% when I had it reboot).
I've just got this phone recently (so exchanging it might be an option). I'm running the LoStKernel 1.0.0.8 experimental kernel with StarBurst 1.9.8r and the ICS animations mod.
A mate of mine suggested using a jig but I don't think it will do much as the phone won't even boot to download mode.
Thanks

FIXED:
I took out the battery, held the power button for 10 seconds, put the battery back in and turned it on like normal. Mentioning so someone else can find it quick in the search.
I have heard that if u completely drain the battery to nothing, remove the SD card and plug it in and turn it on that it boots

I loaded it up and used it for about 3 mins or so (gpu force is on). I could feel the phone starting to get hot and about that time my screen went black (which has done this before) so I pulled the battery out which usually fixed previous issues. Well this time everything would boot up and once the launcher loaded my GPS icon appeared in the status bar and the device would crash and reboot again. After numerous battery pulls and booting into safe mode and everything else I could think of the problem never corrected, doing the same thing everytime. Eventually had to restore with factory image.
Just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this? Also, it doesn't help that in new to android and was completely uneducated on a fix besides what I did and was a little turned off to the OS at that point.
On the other hand I love my Galaxy Nexus lol

i play around with it here & there but have never had that happen. also, i have gps/location turned off(always that way) so not sure if that has anything to do with it.
I'm playing around with it aswell and up to 30-40 min straight without it ever even getting tempered.. with gps location turned on and over wifi..

no issues here with earth over wifi. gps off. didn't get too hot either. also loaded faster and with less lag than my transformer.
I've also used it for more than 15 minutes without problems. It does heat up, but nowhere near the ungodly temperatures it reaches while playing games.
gps seems to heat up more when charging it seems. with any phone. but i wouldn't sweat it too much unless your phone is rebooting or melting.

I had a few freezes (mostly in google maps) but they were resolved with a battery pull. Your expereince could have been just very bad luck.
Try this App to check your phones hardware: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.into.stability&feature=order_history
I had no problem running it for 20 min, no errors occurred. Phone gets really warm to the right of the camera when the App is active, which is to be expected.
Both mine loaded fine.
Since the last upgrade for the Verizon GN, I've had issues where the second core will go to sleep, and does not awaken even when the phone is busy. Only a reboot of the phone seems to fix the state. I'm not sure what event is driving it to enter this state (bad charger? low battery condition?).
I'm basing the information on SystemPanel Light. When its in this state, everything is running slow (half the cpu power). I usually notice it after the phone connects to my car, but it could easily be that its just busier with GPS, Audio etc... at that point, and that it has entered the condition from a night of sitting charging.
Anyone else encounter this? I searched, but didn't see any other posts, but it could be my searching skills are lacking.
Thanks for any ideas on how to wake up the second core, or ideas on what could make it to go sleep in the first place.
