On my family members' Nokia N8 and Sony Ericsson Vivaz, the wifi connects when apps require it, and disconnects when they are finished. Is it possible to get this functionality on Android?
For example:
On my DHD I click the wifi button, launch the web browser, then when I'm finished, I close it and disconnect the wifi.
On the n8 and Vivaz opening the web browser automatically connects the wifi and closing the browser automatically disconnects the wifi after a minute or so.
I'd love to be able to do this on my DHD!! =)
You can try Juice/Ultimate Defender, I think it has this functionality built in but you have to select which apps. So e.g you're out and about and have mobile data turned off, but then you open facebook Juice/Ultimate Defender will turn mobile data on based on your settings.
I remember on my Nokia that mobile data would turn on when I opened the browser, nowhere else and my wifi was always on so :/
But I guess Android is an OS which the internet is at its core.
I would use Tasker for this. Trickier to set up, but the flexibility is second to none.
Thank you for the excellent app suggestions! Unfortunately Juice Defender seems to have striped this functionality from their latest free version. Alas, I'd hoped to give it a try. Tasker looks extremely comprehensive too, but I just can't justify such an expense for a single 'quality of life' function. =(

Is there an app that chooses your preferred Wifi connection when it's available, like at home, over your Data connection? I know the 3G iPhone has something like this and i'd like to have that happen on my HTC TyTn running CRCs 13.0 Windows 6.1.
Any suggestions?
Cheers

SPB phone suite is one! That's why I use it!
which part of their package does what i want? i've had a look at their site
i don't want all that other stuff that they offer - just the automatic detection of my home WiFi and connection to it - disconnecting my Data connection

I did say 'spb phone suite'
Edit, not sure if it can be 'automated' you need to select a profile.
Mine works without having Phone suite installed.
When I'm at home I activate my Wifi - open activesync and sync my info. When done I simply close my wifi connection. When I'm on the road I just open activesync and it automatically opens my defauld data connection to sync via GSM / 3G. The process works simply enough.

I don't like the manual part of how WM uses available Data connections. It should be able to
1. Power on and Connect to a registered WiFi accesspoint when available
2. Connect via GRPS/UMTS/HSDPA... when no registered WiFi AP is present and power off WiFi to save battery power
Nokia phones with S60 (not FP2) operating system do support this function.

I have mine set to turn off the wifi if no network is connected in two minutes (wireless network, power settings). Sounds like you want something that will automatically turn on wifi every time you activate your device, instead of manually choosing to turn on wifi.
Before I had the wifi set to turn off, I found that was a pain in the proverbial, as it kept telling me about networks it found that I wasn't interested in connecting to!
Hey all, I was doing some digging in the Registry for a couple of changes I wanted to make but wanted to know if there is a way for one more.
I made the change in the registry to keep wifi on even on standby, and I made the change to autoconnect (When you are back within range of your connection), but what I cant find is the setting, that if your let's say at Dunkin Donuts, or Starbucks or when your at the airport where its an unsecured connection, that it will automatically connect you, I thought at first the EnableAutoConnect was for that but then realized it was only for connections already established and when you are back in range it will connect.
Anyone know if what I'm asking exists in the Registry?
*Bump*
Anyone?
Hello AngelDeath,
I find with my Touch Pro 2 (and old HTC Hermes) and most pdas that wifi drains the battery very quickly so I have never have it running that long.
I have seen an app that is suppost to do what you want, it is called "Easy wifi Radar"
http://www.makayama.com/easywifiradar.html
I prefer to use wififofum that is free and turn on when want to search for free wifi, download mail manually and then disconnect saving battery

Anybody know a good app that I can use to do bluetooth tethering with the A100 off of my phone (Droid X on Verizon)? I am not rooted on either and mobile hotspot is disabled on the phone by Verizon.
I use PDAnet with my netbook but the PDAnet for tablets doesn't seem to work (it will pair with but not connect with phone). Looking for other apps to try...
Thanks.

I do believe that all the droid devices can actually do Bluetooth tethering from within the settings app, look for Droid Life's article on that. Also, getting the pdanet for tablets to work correctly is, well, difficult.
To make it work, the devices have to be paired in the default settings on both devices, then the have to both be discoverable in the settings app (it makes it discoverable for 120 seconds.) After this, while both are still discoverable, and have been paired (should say paired but not connected in the settings app) Run the server on the phone. Next, do the proxy thing it asks you to do (if it doesn't take you to a proxy menu, push back until your back at pdanet, and push it again, you'll see the proxy menu this time) Now search for it on the tablet, its best to do this in portrait mode so you can see all of the clients at once. Once there, your phone will appear if all the prior steps are active and still working. Tada, connection.
Sadly, you can't use any of the google apps (youtube, gmail, market, ect.) due to the odd proxy settings it asked you to do before connecting, so only the browser (or dolphin browser, if you use that) will detect you have a connection, and let you use it. You can browse the web, use youtube (using the youtube site, not the app), and check your email (again, with its site, not the app). Another limitation is that you cannot download files. But, if all you want to do is browse the web on your tab, since its faster, it'll do fine.
Or you could use the better option, root the phone, throw up a wifi hotspot, and then connect to it, then all apps will work correctly.
try Tethering Widget from market.

That one uses wifi hotspot, takes me to Verizon page asking for $$. I am looking to tether with bluetooth.
No matter what I try I can't get PDANet Tablet to work... I don't want to root the phone but I might end up having to.
So our guest wifi network in office requires you to press an I agree button before connecting you to internet, and once you agree you're supposed to be good for 7 days. So once you connect - it redirects your first connection to captive portal, but if you have already agreed recently, it redirects you again automatically to the original webpage you were trying to go to - seamless user experience.
Samsung (with their infinite wisdom) introduced a behaviour in 4.3 that if it senses a wifi captive portal (by detecting redirection or not getting 204 return code), it immediately disconnects from the AP, and waits for the user to sign in (says "sign in required"). So everyday once I walk in, I need to do a manual connect to the wifi AP.
Is there any way I can disable this behaviour of disconnecting from an AP if captive portal is detected? I understand it redirects, but that only the first time, and eventually loads the intended page without further manual intervention.
Did you find out anything about this? I would love to know how to get around this also

I found a program in the market called Wifi Portal Connect that seems to be a workaround. Haven't had a chance to try it yet

Not sure if that'd work, because the O/S itself will disconnect from the AP. Such apps come into play after that. There's another similar program Wifi Web Login which stopped working because of this bug -- they documented the issue here: http://wifiweblogin.syslynx.co.uk/2013/12/samsung-43-compatibility.html

Actually I have been using Wifi Web Login for the past 1 or more years with great success so I am very sad that it is not working now. It is a great program.
The program that I referenced above does not do the same thing as Wifi Web Login(which I have installed). This program claims to detect the disconnection that Samsung is enforcing and forces it to reconnect, giving Wifi Web Login (or similar programs) programs time to work.
I am at work right now and it definitely is working--I have been connected to work wifi every time I checked and I have been already logged into the work system, so this program did allow Wifi Web Login to do its thing.
Unfortunately I think it drained my battery. so it might not be a viable option in reality.
I hope a fix for this program comes soon.
It looks like my battery problem wasn't due to the program Wifi Portal Connect. I'm using it in combination with Wifi Web Login and all is well.

I want to enable bluetooth only at home or work; it'd be ok if that was determined either by physical location, or by Wi-Fi (specific networks connected or available).
Is this easy to do? I'm pretty sure Tasker can do this but ideally I'd like a simpler solution, as my recollection from Tasker a few years ago was that it gets complicated, really fast.
Tasker Beta is much easier to use than Tasker of a few years ago.
There are other apps that are still easier. I'll come back to this thread when I remember the names of them.
IFTTT should be able to do this easily
I've been using MacroDroid for a lot of stuff like that, it's pretty simple to use
Tasker would be insanely easy for this. You start a profile that triggers on state when your Wi-Fi is connected to your home Wi-Fi. You create a task to turn on your Bluetooth and then create an exit task to turn off your Bluetooth when you are disconnected from that Network. Tasker is not always easy to use but this should take about 15 minutes even for somebody who's new.
Fire Hound 8.1
my preferred app is "AutoMagic"
