From what I can tell almost nobody could care less about FM radio on the Epic at this point, however, I believe that I am one of the few people left that would actually really like to see it implemented in our phones.
We already know the phone is technically capable of it; in fact, some people had success in getting it to work on EE03 (http://androidforums.com/epic-4g-al...s-only-cwm3025-deodexed-prerooted-5-16-a.html).
So my question is if there are any developers working on making a functional FM radio a reality or if work on the function has completely gone by the wayside on Gingerbread and ICS for our phones.
Also, if you're like me and care about this missing feature but aren't a developer, feel free to leave your input as well.
Thank you!
i second this, that and did the developer go anywhere with video out? A couple weeks back he posted that he still had insterest.
Not for me. I am good with streaming thousands of FM stations. It is hard enough to keep a good station with a portable radio and an antenna. Headphones as an antenna won't cut it for me.
Maybe if it was HD but even then I don't think so. Like Kenny was saying, FM radio reception issues would drive me mad. All local FM stations here in STL are streamable which basically puts the nail in the coffin.
I would really love the FM radio to work.
Streaming is great if the signal is good enough.
But I spend a lot of time in poor signal areas & streaming is not an option.
So FM would be very usefull for me.
That is the only thing I like better about my wife's EVO shift. It has a FM radio.
I would like it to work.
Sent from the Drivers Seat of my Suby txting and Driving doing 100MPH+ in a school zone! Ha.
I prefer 'net streaming. I get terrible AM/FM reception at work, so streaming is the only way to go for me. I even use it at home.
Back when I first got my Epic, I got a Galaxy S widget for the radio from the European version.
The widget installed, and launched, but reported the FM Radio was not turned on, so could not scan for stations.
I am not sure where the break was, but that was as far I as I saw the testing go.
I too would love this feature, as it would allow me to listen to the radio, in places where I dont have good enough cell reception for streaming.
Hey guys. Okay so why doesn't the Epic 4G Touch come with FM Radio enabled out of the box? I've done my research and the Epic 4G Touch's hardware supports FM Radio. But when I got my E4GT, NOTHING but ****ty Sprint Radio which is Internet Radio! Why is Samsung & Sprint doing this? I paid a good $200+ for their stuff with a 2 year contract and they want to disable FM Radio? And then I even rooted and tried Spirit FM, still nothing. E4GT owners & developers, please tell me how you feel about this issue. I'm kinda pissed if you asked me.
Not to be rude, but why do you need FM radio? It's so...old.
Most radio stations on FM are available online for free.
That aside, I have no idea if the hardware has an FM tuner built in.

It does. It's part of the Broadcom chip in this phone that handles Bluetooth and WiFi. It's unused though. I always wondered if an adventurous developer would dig in and find a way to activate it, but it's probably not worth the effort.

I don't like internet radio... does constant buffering ring a bell? I'm just saying it's not fair to some users (like me) who still listen to FM.
A google search led me to similar complaints from att and tmo customers with S2 and it seems that only the international versions have fm radio. Please pm me is you find out otherwise because I would also like to have it.
For those who say why not listen to internet regular fm radio is much higher audio quality than something being streamed. Also if you are in an area with poor data signal or crowded like sporting event regular old radio still works.
I thought it was an FM transmitter. Not sure though

You can listen to FM without having to sacrifice virgins in hopes of playing the gods so that they give you a usable Sprint data speed.

According to the XDA thread for the app Spirit FM the Epic 4G Touch will likely never be able to support any FM app. I would post a link, but I have not reached 10 posts yet. Do a search for Spirit FM in the forums and the second post in the [APP] thread lists compatible phones. Post #3 states the suspected reason why it will not work;
"Some devices contain Broadcom chips, but appear to be unable to receive FM.
They show unusual RSSI values, that jump rapidly between such values as: -128, 0, 16, and 55.
None of these devices have a stock FM app, nor will any other FM app function.
My theory is that these devices lack the hardware connections to operate, and may even be deliberately disabled:"

Thanks but I don't want nothing to do with internet radio at all!!!!!! NONE OF IT! I WANT FM!
Yeah, that's the reason I went ahead and got a Sony-Ericsson MW600. Now I have a bluetooth headset, music controls, and FM radio with battery life of upwards of 12hrs. Plus I still have an E4GT, so it's the best of both worlds.

Great headset. I haven't yet had any need/desire to use the FM radio function, though, so I can't comment on how well that works.
this is probably similar to the nooks situation which has a broadcom chip, ive read that there are internal connections of the chip that are missing/broken so not gonna happen.

Then buy an international GSII. If you can't fix a problem, you have to find a different resolution. In this case, unless you plan on reverse engineering the chip and drivers yourself, you will be stuck with internet radio. Not to sound rude, but that's the reality

is there an fm radio app for tmobile's s3? i need an app that uses radio, NOT internet..
No there is not, and you cannot make one. It is a hardware issue. Some Motorola phones maybe have it, I feel like I read that somewhere. If it is for music radio than your best bet would be to buy music. If you listen to talk radio like myself you can download pockecast and see if your favorite talk radio stars have podcasts and download them at home via wifi. That's what I do, I also listen to some well known conservative talk show hosts that some people may disagree with. I pay for access to their podcasts.

You could buy a radio that offers Bluetooth support and stream that via Bluetooth to your phone if you have a S3.
I use TuneIn radio app.

Bluetooth does not waste that much battery, it will use as much as an FM radio chip would maybe slightly more but regardless you will still bee looking into some extra power drain, and tune in radio does not use an fm radio it still uses data, If you want strictly FM you may not have many options since there is no fm radio on the phone
FM radio and Bluetooth happen to be the same technology. Battery drain would be the same. And, your comment about intelligence and worst suggestions is rude seeing as how you asked for help and he gave you an option.
And, the reason why you can't find a true radio app (not using data), is because Google Play is smart enough to know that your phone doesn't have the FM radio hardware on the phone.

Tune in is not an fm radio it is internet radio taht picks up fm stations broadcast over the web, samsung has no reason to give you an FM radio app when the phone cannot receive fm signals

I just switched from iPhone to Note II and I'm pretty pissed I can't just plug into my cars USB port and have it play through the speakers anymore...
I have a 2012 Honda FIt that has a built in USB port and it worked fine with iPhone. When I plug in the Note II, I get a "Unsupported" message on the car stereo. Anyone have a workaround for getting apps to play through the microUSB properly?
Maybe this plus the cable you already have? http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B007SXINGK

Zing!.... But seriously though, I wouldn't mind and answer to this as well. Building a custom dash in my car and it would be hella convenient to just build in a little cradle to set my n2 in for my music. My head unit has the usb, but just pluging things together doesn't do it... Maybe a "dock mode" or something that is missing?
Edit... Why would anyone EVER suggest a product that has basically 1.5 stars? It's obviously crap.

No I read it. I just didn't take the time to post the whole thing from my phone. There doesn't appear to anything that will help you immediately to achieve what you want at this time other than using the cable I showed you or if you have Bluetooth use that or you can get a Bluetooth to FM transmitter. All things that will get the music to your radio.
after taking 5 minutes with a quick google search I turned up that until 4.+ android there was no way to do this. However, I don't think Samsung implemented it with the note 2 since I couldn't find anything about it. I did however turn up the items I mentioned.
It looks like if that is what you want and you aren't willing to invest in the way Android works Android isn't for you and you should probably return the device and get an iPhone again. The USB drive you mentioned probably uses the Apple protocol and USB mass storage protocol neither of which the note can perform. If you have a 3.5mm connector that would allow you to connect it as well. My wife's vehicle had this as an input option that I quickly changed to a Bluetooth connection with a simple like item from Amazon.
Android's Bluetooth protocol is amazing after ice cream sandwich, auto connecting to my vehicle's stereo everytime I start my truck and with Tasker/Automateit one can even have it auto launch your music apps. with the awesome battery life of this device, which the iPhone can't touch, I don't even bother to plug it in and just leave it in my pocket jump in and bam Pandora starts playing. When I turn off my truck it stops on it's own and I go about my day.
now that is not to say I am not incorrect and there is another solution that would get you going the way you want. However there are a lot of people on XDA way smarter at these phones than I am and none of them have Chimed in yet so that isn't a good sign because generally the really knowledgeable people waste no time Answering questions.
The 30 pin connector from your previous iOS devices have way more abilities than the 4 to 5 pin micro USB port does. Which is great but limits people to the Apple Ecosystem, which is great for Apple's pocket book. Not so great for a person wishing to move to another device. This is why I always tell people if you are invested in Apple just stick with them and if android then stick with android. Nothing funnier than an idiot *****ing because their Apps don't work anymore after changing from one to the other.

I am sorry I couldn't help you. perhaps being appreciative of my attempt would get someone else to help you rather than being rude about it. I was attempting to educate you that you didn't buy an iOS device and shouldn't expect it to act like one. Good luck now I will be surprise if anyone else even bothers with you with that attitude. You're the one that bought a phone before bothering to research it and assumed it would work like an iOS device. The phone works exactly like it SHOULD it doesn't however work exactly like you THINK it should. That is not a failure of the device.

Dude, seriously, read what you just said. You were attempting to educate me that I didn't buy an iOS device; thank you Captain Obvious. I know what phone I have and that is why I posted in the Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II forum.
I don't want it to "work like an iPhone". It's ridiculous for you to say that I'm crazy for thinking that my $700 (if purchased unlocked) smartphone SHOULD be able to output audio via the USB port like other smartphones (other Android and iPhones work fine in my car), thus using the DAC directly instead of having to use the lower quality 3.5mm headphone jack or Bluetooth A2DP.
Anyways, to anyone who wants to be helpful, I've found that the issue has something to do with the fact that Samsung seems to have changed the way that the Note II and S3 operate the USB port. Anyone have any ideas for restoring the previous functionality of the port? Thanks!

he was exactly correct....the protocol has not been implemented.
there is no way to know it will be.
give it time or go back to the iphone seems to be the only applicable responses...so pick one.
I too went wireless back in 2008 so can't be of much more help than that.
Everything I listen to works over my head unit via bt.
isnt bt standard on the fit?
ok now wait...are you looking for dac ...hell thats been a samsung issue across multiple devices for a while...though i thought I read it was fixed now. it was an issue on the orig note..the skyrocket.. variants of the s2 seems like one or two more as well.
guess it was not fixed.
you might edit your original post ...wording it as two apps won't stream over usb like on my iphone is harder for some to understand you are talking about dac

There's a mod that lets you mount your sd card in msc mode...but it won't let you listen to streaming services.
I believe there's a kernel in the dev forum that enables usb audio. This would not likely interface with your car's usb port. What you need is a usb to 3.5mm splitter
It's just like plugging in via the audio port get this way you only need to plug one cable to you phone.
And you are kinda rude.

So you have had android devices that could play pandora, spotify and the like via USB? Ive never had a device personally capable of dping that. My wifes head unit can play Pandora but i think that might be Bluetooth only, it its definitely only Pandora though. I was able to mount as mass storage in the Android 2.3 days, but even with the USB audio in 4+ i doubt if any current market product has the capabilities to control the music like it does the iPhone. I'm sure iPhone uses proprietary software in your stereo to deccoe the audio stream and unfortunately Android is lacking in any manufacturers supporting it.

There are some aftermarket stereos that interface with android.
There is no magic cable that will make your stock stereo work with your Note's Pandora.
I'd like to know exactly what differences you notice between a 3.5mm cord and bypassing the DAC while using your stock audio system.

Thanks.
I would prefer to use the usb plug because I don't have to adjust my headphone output every time I plug it in and because I only need one cable to charge and listen to music. I have read that a lot of car stereos use the "iPod Out" feature of the iPhone and this is why it won't interface properly with Android devices. It's too bad someone hasn't been able to make an app/hack that would emulate this function and intercept the audio out from an Android phone. I can't believe that I'm the only one who is interested in using the usb plug built into their cars for the purpose of charging and listening to music from their smartphones... I guess it's time to spend the money on replacing my factory stereo with an aftermarket head unit with bluetooth.
I just fm transmit my music. I'm not sure of the bitrate difference between bt and a fm signal but it's useable. Then I can use my car charger.
Honestly I just got an iPod for music. Had the same problem and couldn't find a solution. I use spotify so I just download my tracks offline and play them through the iPod. Its also good to have something relatively cheap (its a 2nd gen) to use while working out, who wants to have this huge phone on them while working out. Its great for a lot of things but that iPod out is great considering I can change tracks using the steering wheel. For everything else I have my note 2.

Many to most have it but it is locked out. I keep my old HTC desire as a back-up phone partly because it has the FM radio.
Would love FM radio, I remember back in the Nokia days.........
You'll have as much success getting AT&T to unlock your radio as the bootloader. I've been buying smartphones since the came to be. First with Sprint. Now with AT&T. For each of the we begged to get the fm radio unlocked. Every developer tried to unlock them. Nothing ever happened. It's a shame. I'd love to have it.

Years ago I was a Nokia only girl and the radio was the most difficult thing to give up when I went to Android.
Not entirely true that the FM chip is locked. there have been android phones with FM radio capabilities, I owned and developed for two of them the HTC Inspire (DesireHD) and the HTC One X+ all had FM radios built into the system.
no to mention multiple Motorola devices that are FM capable.
The FM chip is embedded into the Bluetooth chip from what I read. Does the Note 4 have it? No clue. I haven't been able to find any source confirming it.
I remember some devs tried for a long time to get the built-in FM radio to work on the original droid. (I get these phones confused so don't quote me on the model.) By the time I got a new phone, they still hadn't got it working.
I was excited about it too and watched those threads almost as much as I watch the Note 4 root threads...
I believe they don't enable FM Radio anymore is due to people complaining their Bluetooth didn't work right. RFI issues I think. I don't know this for a fact, tho.
I believe they don't enable FM radio because they want you to use data, then after you use to much data they can charge you.
I loved the fm radio on my old dell streak. I hope they bring this back!!
I understand where people are coming from wrt FM radio in a phone. I'm fine with cutting it personally. But then, I haven't listened to terrestrial or satellite radio in years. Commercials, low quality, repeating focus group-driven play lists and idiots that won't shut up when I just want to listen to music? No thanks, you can keep it, I'll listen to my own music collection.
