Q: Anyone else having really weak wifi signal/dropping issues?? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just tried connecting to my Wifi at work...and I have really low signal...meanwhile, my Nook Color has full bars...anyone else having this problem? Was running CM7RC4 updated to CM7 Final...still same thing...

Yeah, I've noticed the same thing while running CM7. I was on stock Sense before and was getting really strong Wi-Fi signals. Then after going through CM7 nightlies, RC's, and now I'm on CM7 Final I am still getting quite weak signal strength.
Now the trade off is that I get much better battery life from CM7 than from Sense. So I'm okay with it...

Really? No one else?

I've been *****ing about this and no one responds to me like I'm crazy. Cm7 has weak wifi as compared to sense. It seems to even get weaker when I'm holding it with my left hand. When I hold with my right hand it boost right back up. This has been a problem since cm6 but like I said people think I'm *****ing; I know they're aware of this but I guess they can't explain why sense has better wifi reception/performance.
~ d3rk

Yeah...I get the same thing man...but it's weird...my Nook Color running CM7 doesn't do it...

I switch back and forth from MIUI to MikFroyo pretty often. Although WiFi and 3G show stronger signals in Sense, the actual performance/reception is the same. I think AOSP signal strength indicators are more true to life...and Sense pads the numbers. Download Real Signal and test it...dBs are the same no matter what ROM you're on.

My Wifi Drops
I've noticed a similar issue, the AOSP ROMs do have a sightly different number of "bars" for 2g/3g/voice, and I can still make and receive calls when it says I have service.
But my wifi (as many others) does seem to suffer, I actually lose connection some places in my house, where previously running a Sense ROM I did not. Happens at work as well. I did read in another thread other people confirming that the wifi drivers in AOSP are not as good as the sense ones, in addition the GPS drivers seem to have issues as well. No one seems to know why yet, just that it happens. I haven't confirmed dBm levels between the two, but I will probably do that tonight.

Link, please?

I don't have a link because I used ROM Manager to download it. ROM Manager is nice and I am pretty sure you can download this patch with the free version.
Or google Aggressive-Freedom-v0.8.5-UNIVERSAL-signed.zip

[Q] Do I need to reflash my WiFi?

So after I successfully rooted my phone, I did flash the radio and WiFi. Custom ROMs have worked pretty well. But lately, I have noticed (and I am not sure to what degree this was going on before) that my WiFi signal is quite bouncy. This is the case no matter what WiFi access point I go to.
Is it possible that something with my phone got messed up? Is it recommended that I reflash the WiFi? Should I just try a different ROM?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
By "WiFi" do you mean "WiMax?"

I mean whichever radio is responsible for my WiFi... so is the WiFi radio and the 4g radio one in the same? If so, the question still stands... would flashing it again possibly fix fluctuation in signal?
Im still having this problem. Anyone else? In fact, I was at a friend's house and was using his WiFi router for access and it was slow. I told him we probably need to reboot his router but he didn't think so. My speed test with his router was 800Kbps - ~ 1Mbps... and I know I was testing his WiFi... not my 3G.
He then testing from his iPhone 3GS and was getting ~ 7Mbps (about what should be expected)... so clearly the problem was my phone.
Did a clear cache and dalvik and still not better. My radio is still bouncing.
Anyone have any ideas?
???
As far as I know, there is no such radio for WiFi???
WiFi improvements come through software updates from HTC, but I've never seen a flashable update??
You can only flash the evo radio and wimax.
Wifi on the Evo sucks. I have the range issue regardless of what rom I use. My iphone doesn't have an issue.

This must be hit-or-miss. I vaguely remember some others complaining about WiFi (wtf..lol). I get a great connection at my house, I can use WiFi out in the yard, and the only time I've gotten less than 8megs down I was also watching a movie on Netflix and dl'ing a torrent.. and even then I got over 4m/s
my wifi was fine until i flashed to this latest leak.

CM6 Horrific 3G speeds? Sense way better...

i have sense on my evo again because everywhere i went no matter my signal, the bars on cm6 showed 1-2 rarely 3 never 4 and the 3G was painfully slow. ran tests and i got .1 mbps on cm6, flashed sense to see if my phone was the problem and it got 1mbps, ten times faster? can anyone explain the potential problem here? its killing me cuz i love aosp but the 3G is killin me
Always had the same issue here. One of the reasons I stay on a sense based rom.

And just a suggestion, install a senseless ROM... Built off sense but has sense removed... Will be the closest thing to AOSP but will keep your speeds and 4g working.
The signle meter on CM6 only has 4 bars, the Sense one has like 8. You are getting the same coverage.
Secondly, wrong forum. This is development.
Third. I have slow 3G on CM6 roms too. I have no idea why, and everyone else will tell you it's Sprint. But I can be in the same place, and run speedtests and Sense based ROMs are always faster.
Thread moved to Q&A.
Yup. Sense will always have better 3G signal. Sometimes when I am on CM the signal even drops down to 1x.
Thats irrelevant .. he also posted the speeds he was getting. OP, I don't know what's wrong; doesn't happen to me. Is it on all aosp roms? Try messing round with the settings
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on the IPhone. We now have the Htc Evo.
oops i thought i posted in q&a, my bad.
and i understand the whole bar ratio but on sense i get like 7 bars out of 8 rather than 1 out of 4. seriously it is almost ALWAYS 1 bar and it drops to 1x a lot! its never faster than about 125kb/s on a speedtest no matter where i am. its almost like theres a governor bogging it down
ALSO: ive flashed gingerbread roms galore, all the same issue.
On a AOSP rom the 4 bars are the 4 low bars outta the 6 in sense, so if u see only two bars then ur short 4 which gives u horrible battery. Also kernels play the biggest role in data if u want to believe it or not...

I had the same problem until I flashed a Sense rom, re-flashed the newest radio after first boot. Updated the profile then restarted the phone. I then could flash any AOSP rom with no speed problems. But every time i go back to a sense rom I must do that again if I want to go back to AOSP...
I don't know if it will work for you, but it did for me...

Make sure "Data enabled", "International data roaming", and "National data roaming" are checked, and "System select" is on Automatic.
And before you freak out, all of the EVO plans on Sprint have unlimited roaming.

hahahahaaha thanks i already know all that. and yes its all checked.
well it seems that the radio flash and updating the profile worked some magic. speeds are up above 700kbps
EDIT: nope. back to horrible speeds jk
can i get some feedback from more CM users please? this is so confusing
I had the same problem on cm6. Still don't understand why but I'm sticking with a sense rom. I get the best results on myns roms. Fresh was almost just as bad as cm6 as far as speeds go. Kinda weird imo. Maybe someone can explain?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
If I had to guess, its due to the fact most sense based roms have the carrier spyware built in. (ksoftiq I think is the process name)
But, thats just a guess, I'm probably wrong.
I have the same issue with cm6 and the latest gb asop roms. Not with the display of the bars, but on asop roms only at my work I will bounce between 1x and 3g. I will lose data, then go to 1x, then back to 3g constantly. When holding, the signal isnt too bad, but it is almost as if the phone cannot pick between towers or something. I have tried multiple radio/pri combos and such and have no solution. Also tired switching back to sense and updated profile and prl.
Edit: Could it also be location based? This only happens at work in Burbank, CA. Just about everywhere else I am around LA I do not have this problem.
I suffered from this on cm. On gb I get great speeds for a while then it will act crazy and get slow. I reboot and it goes back to being fast again.

if u ever notice some of those extra processes running in the background of sense like IQRD or IQ agent for example... i believe some of those are qualcomm based programs that help ensure good data transfer speeds. And it's funny that we all hated sense because of those extra background processes that seem to slow the whole system down but some of them are actually helping to keep data speeds up in sense roms. Obviously in AOSP those processes are not present therefore speeds arent always as reliable and may drop in and out. Im just speculating on this and have no concrete proof but i did read up on one of the processes and it points to qualcomm's cdma based technology development so im assuming there is a correlation.

[Q] why is wifi so horrible on AOSP ROM's?

I've tried about many ROM's such as miui, CM7, decks, etc.... I've had no luck, the wifi is just so horrible in many places where in a sense ROM I'd have perfect wifi or good, compared to poor wifi disconnecting after a while.
Thanks for reading Anyone have a solution?
I use CM7 and have absolutely no problem with my wifi. Have you tried CM7? If so, have you tried anything else?

Yeah I've tried it just bit ago and the past days as well but I'm sure it isn't a hardware issue because on nrg 3.5 rom from Nov18 my wifi works perfect where I would I couldn't get wifi signal at all on cm.
The problem is that sense doesn't show the right signal. Compare the speeds and you'll see what I mean

It has nothing to do with speed, please read what I said... I lose signal on aosp ROM's on common areas that I get nearly excellent coverage in, note I tested this with airplane mode on to ensure my wifi doesn't disconnect and switch to 3G. A couple of other others on the miui thread have also said that same.
I'm using the new aosp ROM ice cream sandwich for my phone and wifi works like a charm. Using it now

I don't think you understand what I said. Sense shows the wrong wifi signal. It shows 3 bars for me while aosp shows 1. Aosp shows true signal because I am far from the router
Having trouble with AOSP? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1295702
Are you using the included kernel or flashing custom ones? While your signal may show lower, you shouldn't notice a drop in actual connectivity. Flashing an incompatible kernel, like a Sense kernel, can mess up your wifi.
I'm on MIUI right now showing a full wifi signal. I haven't used Sense in a very long time, but I don't remember getting better wifi reception while I was using it. I'm using Tiamat right now, maybe try a different kernel next time you flash AOSP and see if that helps. There are also a few tweaks you can do to help with your wifi signal, like changing the wifi scan interval in build.prop, but I haven't actually done anything like that since my signal is fine.

I've been sticking to the stock kernel that the ROM's have and savaged. I'll give the tiamat kernel a try with miui, what Tiamat version are you using so I can try it if not maybe I'll try getting a phone replacement to see if I might have a fault or evil mojo evo that hates aosp lol! hardware 004 here.

I've heard that 004s can be problematic, I have a 003 and only get issues when I go a while without wiping fully. I'm using 4.1.0 right now, start there and maybe try other versions if you want. I ran SZ for a while and it started off smooth but eventually got laggy and unresponsive at times despite anything I would do (wiping caches, etc). Switched back to Tiamat and all has been working well since.
Give it a go, if it doesn't work for you then maybe it's some kind of hardware issue. Just to be sure, do a full wipe and try to avoid restoring anything unless you absolutely have to - definitely don't restore system data. Unfortunately you can't take your phone in to Sprint and get a replacement since your wifi is dodgy on AOSP. If it happened on stock then you might have a case.

I've been using the tiamat for now and it seems more stable on wifi, funny though, the wifi seemed bad on the default miui kernel. I also moved my router to a higher place on a shevel with nothing steel or bad around it. Oh and don't worry my local sprint store in Los angeles is a big time Hispanic corporate... they replace devices for any complaining here to avoid issues with the people lol! I got to love it.

Signal Strength

I'm curious as if anyone else is having this issue, or if there is a simple fix I'm missing. I'm currently on Calk's ICS ROM (FB27) and my signal strength randomly vanishes and appears as if I have no signal. I believe it's only appearance though, as my data still loads fine. It's not a big deal, but it is rather annoying. Is there a way to fix this? Also, I apologize if this has been discussed elsewhere and I missed it. Not trying to be annoying, simple curious. Thanks!

Are you referring to your wifi radio or cellular radio? I see what you describe with the wifi radio on all of the ROMs I've been using. I'm currently on MIJJz BLEND which is based on Calk's FB27 and alot of the time my Wifi signal strength shows 1 bar but when I go to the Wifi settings where it is scanning for networks the same network shows up as 3 or more bars. If I drop and then add the network the notification area shows three bars but eventually drops back to one bar.
But I recall this happening on the stock ROM too.
Haven't seen the issue with the cell radio.
http://oi39.tinypic.com/5lytmo.jpg
Notice my actual phone signal. It does that randomly. The Wifi signal is always fine, I haven't had an issue with that. I suppose it's just a bug that will be worked out eventually. Like I said, it still works fine, it appears to be merely visual.

I am having this problem as well. I have tried several different modems and several 4.0.3 roms and have had this problem with all of them. I have noticed that my signal strength stay consistently between -100 and -106 dbm even when using my airave.

I've had the same problem on the same ROM.
I feel a bit sheepish as it didn't occur to me that the problem was only visual...
I have experienced the same thing. My bars come and go constantly... Even if my phone does not move....
I doubt its a bug. I had all types of Sprint phones and they all did that. It does it a lot on 3g. Its like 3g steals from the bars..

It is a known issue with most of the leaked builds that have come out recently. The bars for Wifi, 4G and 3G were all effected by it. It was purely visual. Qbking77 mentioned it in just about every review he did for the different leaks (and it's been thoroughly covered on several development threads).
If you'd like to confirm your actual signal strength, I'd recommend using a third party app to see what your actual signal is.
Supposedly it was fixed in FC15 or FC18 but I don't remember which it was.
Hope this helps!
Are you guys saying this problem doesn't exist on Calk's 2.9.2 ROM? I'm using 2.9.0 (just never updated) and I get this all the time. I think the signal actually does suck though. I see the -DBM changing too. Is the reported dbm visual too? I'm confused. My phone keeps switching to 1xrtt a lot when this happens too. I just figured it was cprint being crappy around here. When I force roam on verizon the signal bars don't bounce up and down like this.

As far as I know it only effects the visualization of signal strength, not the actual signal strength itself. That being said if you're running one of the leaked ROM's chances are that you're probably running a leaked modem too. People are having all kinds of results with the new modems. Try flashing just your modem and see I'd you get a better signal.
EDIT: After flashing the new modern be sure to update profile and PRL.

[Q] AOSP and Sense 4G/Wimax issue

Hello there,
I've been having this issue with the 4g/wimax feature for a long time and I'm not too sure if it's just me or anyone else, but perhaps someone can help me. When I'm using a sense rom (evo classic, synergy, etc), my 4g seems to stay on without dropping. The signals are all good, even when it's on its weakest bar, I am still connected. However, every time I use evo deck 1.3 stable/1.3d, my 4g seems to drop like crazy. The signals become weak and I often find myself disconnecting online. It becomes annoying whenever I'm browsing and would have to constantly refresh.
I like sense roms and all, but I prefer aosp due to the speed and performance. I haven't tested any other aosp roms yet, but I know I like evo deck do to everything being a clean install. I would love it if someone has a 4g fix for me or can recommend me a good sense/aosp rom.
Thank you.
Same issues here with the same ROMs actually. Would love to see an answer. Thanks.

Unfortunately, its the AOSP kernels. There's nothing you could do other than go back to a sense rom.
Its the exact same reason why data transfer via USB cable to the sdcard is sooooo slow.
I had the same dilemma and ultimately, I hate sense I rather deal with these two main issues.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA
There's a fix for it if you look around it involves editing a few files to change the scan and disconnect intervals which allows it to scan faster + take longer to disconnect so it drops less. Basically it will refresh itself in the background for you
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Ah I guess ill switch back to sense.
And I already have that tweak where I can edit the wimax values and 3g values. Still same thing. I guess its the aosp kernal.
