Ok this is a little nuts, but it sort of makes sence ?!
I am sure it will do for the Xoom as well ...

I have the Scott eVest Tactical 4.0 (no longer available) and it works pretty well for storing the miscellaneous gadgets, including the xoom. The xoom is on the heavy side to put in the front pocket but it does fit and is more convenient than carrying a bag, The one problem I have is that xoom is heavy enough to tear at the pocket. My jacket is a number of years old though and was not designed with something like a tablet in mind. Presumably the "iPad pocket" has been reinforced.
Personally I like the vest but the trench coat looks pretty naff to me.
Scottevest is very essential to any person who wants to carry gadgets without looking too still with their "man purse"

So I recently purchased a 3D printer for my small business. I'd love to print some custom cases for the captivate. My printer supports printing plastics, rubbers, and other proprietary materials. I am not the best CAD designer, but if someone can provide a CAD file or .stl file for the Captivate I could print custom cases for cheap designed by our community.

I wish I could help you, but I'm equally terrible at CAD. How much do those 3d printers go for, by the way?

Might be able to help you out with that. My best friend who goes to University of Illinois is taking a class where he has to make cad files of objects he owns. He just did his iPhone and it looked great. I'll ask him if he has time to make one of our phone.
Are you wanting cad renderings of the phone itself?? My brother does cad design for some big company in Washington. Ill see what's up.

I actually could create one in CAD, but I just don't have the program anymore...
I can do a model for you but depends on what detail you want. If you just want a case printed, its really easy as all you need is external dimensions, gradual change of shape, button placements and so on. I've got a captivate so can base it off that.
Might require some fine tuning but should be easy . All youd have to do is show me photos of issues.
PM me if you dont find anyone else in about two weeks (currently bogged down with work)

has any progress been made? this seems interesting
Is it a six axis printer, if not I don't see it working too well? I could do a mock up for you. Three reason I ask about the axis is getting the inside material out. Most 3d printers can do the outside with no problem, its rotating the bit on its own axis to remove inside that you start needing a cnc machine for. Without rotating the bit, you would left with a case that you can just push the phone in and out of, not a surround fit like the body glove case for example.
Edit, you could use a mushroom style bit though on a standard machine. Idk never worked on a3d printer. Just large scale cnc and cad/cam work.

I am willing to send somebody 10 bucks for a good 3D diagram of the captivate exterior.
Cud you post the pics of what u want exactly.. i can make u stl files via a CAD software... proE.

Seems like you've never worked with a "inkjet printer" . It creates a part by putting down layers of a liquid binder in powder. I've created a bunch of complex (and high precision) parts in my school lab. You just have to be really careful in removing it from the printing area for curing.
There is also another method that uses polymer or wax-ish material that goes through pretty much the same process (layer by layer).
well, no updates yet ... still not sure how far is everyone on this project ..
lets get going on it everyone !!!
i just got the phone last night from the att store ..
what i can do on my part would be getting exact dim. on the phone by using a Pharo arm machine that i have at my job. and once i have that i'll keep everyone updated, then we move on to the cad Designing ..
lets do it
You got a 3D printer, now what you need is a 3D scanner!!
I have ProE and Autocad at home. But I spend 50-60 hrs a week staring at a computer at work, last thing I want to do when I get home is more computer work. but if I get some free time in the next couple weeks, I'll build a model of the Captivate.

Oh haha I was thinking more of a mini mill. How thick are the layers? Sites any smoothing need to be done afterwards?
From a phone on an app
I suppose that varies from machine to machine and the powder used. The one at my school seems like it can produce layers about of about 1/64" thick. As long as you let it sit for enough hours for the binder to set, you can remove it and clear off excess powder with a brush and other tools then use a cure to strengthen it (seems like industrial super glue).
Then if thats the case, wouldn't it be easier to get the measurements from a case like the bg one, take a 64th off all surfaces. That way the hardener will have room to lay on top.

I was bouncing around stores looking for a decent sling bag, and I found this swiss gear one for 28 dollars after tax. It has a main pouch for the xoom, a secondary pouch for the charger and hdmi cables, and a back pouch that may be able to fit the motorola bluetooth keyboard, I'm not sure. It feels very sturdy, is a tight comfortable fit (wont bounce around while on the run), and I think is totally worth the price.
This is what I use.
The keyboard fits perfectly in the back pocket and it's cheap!!
Is this sold online at Target? Cannot seem to find it.
EDIT: Is this it?

Does the zipper close completely without trouble? Hard to tell from the photo.
I just picked one of these up. Nice inexpensive bag and Xoom fits great inside. Thanks!
See the man bag thread, this bag was mentioned along with others

yeah that's it. No zipper trouble at all. The bag has a warranty too.
I picked one of these up a couple weeks ago, just haven't had time to move in yet. Question I have after trying to move over to this bag is this. How is everyone putting their XOOM, charger and other misc. items in the bag without the worry that these other items will crack the screen on the XOOM? There's just doesn't seem to be a lot of padding for the XOOM and if say the power supply is in another pocket it could still be directly against the screen and one mishap and crack goes the screen. If you turn the XOOM around where it's facing the back, that leaves the screen open as well.
Granted I may be a bit paranoid, but there just doesn't seem like a lot of room for much else unless you want the XOOM at somewhat of a risk.
Let me know how you put your XOOM and other items into the bag, feedback appreciated.
I put my xoom, the charger, a 10 foot hdmi cable, a wii remote, and a classic controller pro in the bag. I probably wouldnt do this if I didnt have the official motorola folio case for the xoom on though.
My peeps have commented on how much they love my new purse! lol

I always refrain from taking my xoom with me because I don't want to carry it. Any suggestions/tips on how to carry it without using a bag/backpack?
the clown at my son's birthday party had pants with pockets big enough!
Seriously, though, you could easily carry it in the inside pocket of a barbour jacket... just not sure that would be good summer wear.
For late fall through winter the scottevest line is not a bad choice. The outback and the revolution would be the ones I recommend out of the current line. The one I use currently (the tactical 4.0 system) is like the revolution plus but with a removable fleece liner. I am thinking about buying a outback ( http://www.scottevest.com/v3_store/Outback-Jacket.shtml ) for this fall.
As far as bags go the chrome bags minimalist ( http://www.chromebagsstore.com/bags/utility-bags/minimalist.html ) does the job well. It is big enough to carry the xoom (and not much else) but not so large as to be bulky.
Note that these suggestions are not the cheapest options out there. The chrome bags will last a long time though. (I have a mini-metro that I used as my daily laptop bag for 6 years and still use occasionally after 9 years) The evest line is nothing to write home about on durability though, just a normal jacket.
i have the scottevest travel vest that i use on my overseas trips to carry everything. it has an inside pocket designed to fit tablets. its lightweight and has tons of pockets.

I wasn't happy with the crap-tastic Verizion car dock, so I decided to steal an idea from another forum her and try a GPS mount. I found a really nice series at Best Buy from Bracketron - their Grip-iT Mobile Device Holders come is a variety of mounting configurations, including the vent mount I got. It's a pretty common design, but seems pretty well-built for $19.99.
The arms don't spread wide enough for the phone to fit in a landscape orientation, but you put it in portrait and then rotate the whole dock. There is enough pressure for it to stay securely on its side (my kid loves to watch Netflix on the way to school).
Anyhoo, I don't have enough posts to share a link from Best Buy, but it's easy to find on their site. Staples carries it as well.
Wow... now that's ugly.
To be honest, I think much of that is due to trying to take a flash photo in a dimly lit car inside a dark garage. It's certainly not a work of art, but it's not as bad as the photo would indicate. It's actually very black - even the pads. You might want to google it for a better view, unless you were just hatin' for no apparent reason. In which case, I'd say, well played, sir.
Better view.
Dammmn i realy like it, does it rotate?
Sent from my HTC Inspire 4G using XDA App
As the OP said, it does rotate. I've had one in my car for years. Though I ditched its mount and affixed it to a ProClip (didn't like it hanging on my vent, the Volkswagen louvres are individual and can easily break). I've been pretty happy with it as it holds most anything i can throw at it as long as its not something small like an iPod nano.
I have pretty much that same dock, though probably a Chinese knock off (paid around $4 for it). Been using it for the last year and it works great. I like just being able to slide my phone in and out of it rather than clip it into a dock. I also eventually upgraded it to attach to my dash with one of these.
Also using this same car dock. Had it for about a year or so.
Mine is made by "Scosche" and I picked it up at the local Walmart.
wow, talk about old school looking!
It's junk, I had two of them.
Bought them from Best Buy.
1st one lasted 3 weeks before it would no longer open.
2nd one lasted 2 month before it would no long stay closed
like the title says, ive been looking for a case with a stylus built into it. i use a stylus often enough for photo editing that trying to remember to carry my stylus with me wherever i go was getting to be a pain......
so i took matters into my own hands and modified the seidio incipio case to house a standard pogo stylus (available on amazon for 1.98 for a 5 pack)
first off since i have verizon with the extended battery, the case didnt quite sit flush, so i removed part of the silicone.
then i used carbon fiber wrap to make a little holder for the clip on the stylus.
pretty easy to do and took me about 5 minutes. im going to give it a couple days to get use to the added bulk and somewhat awkwardness of it and report back.
what do yall think? too much? genius? waste of time? lol
Can you use the stylus on your GNex? When I tried to use a stylus my GNex (GSM, 4.0.4 stock) didn't react at all to the stylus. So if GNex can't be handled with a stylus I see no sense in a case with a stylus.
Ummmmm.... not sure how to answer that, but... it is a capacitive touch screen which means it takes a special point on the end of it. If you try to use a stylus from... let's say a Nintendo ds or palm. It won't work.
Like I said, I just got tired of forgetting to bring it with me. So the short answer is yes. It works just fine.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
If the tip of the stylus works with GNex it's imo a nice idea
Wow, I must applaud a customized case like this. I'm a huge fan of customizing everything I can think of too. Currently I'm letting my imagination run wild with what I might be able to do with that water based capacitive paint, turning literally anything into a stylus. Also acts as paint-on electrical wire for fabric, skin, or any other awesome idea you can come up with for paintable wire.
Typed entirely by the witchcraft that is Swiftkey X's predictions database from my Team Kang AOKP Gnex.
OK so here is the update. After a couple of days using it I found it to be very effective and useful. The carbon fiber vinyl holds up very well and doesn't stretch out since its already been heated and set. Pocketability leaves something to be desired. I found that for the most part its not an issue but I work I had to keep it on my jacket pocket. Overall I love this idea and I hope I inspired some people to try other stuff..... maybe even a manufacturer could incorporate this as well.
