Cell standby uses a lot of battery compared to screen (48% standby, 38% screen)... and my time without signal is 5%
When I'm at home, I usually get between -90dBm and -110dBm on 3G.
Is this pretty low? Would it being this low cause my phone to chew through batteries like candy?
It has to be pretty low since incomming calls usually go to voicemail and outgoing takes 2-3 tried to get it to connect.
Hmm..
Thanks
Time without signal is good. Its only 5%. If the majority of the tome your phone is off than yes cell standby will be the higher percent. If you think something is draining your battery then download spare parts from the market and it will tell you what is using up your battery and if your phone is sleeping g properly

How many bars of service do you get at your house? If you're not getting a very strong signal and you are rooted then give the app Roam Control a shot. It will change your service towers from Sprint's to Verizon's. Also follow Muscleheads suggestion of downloading Spare Parts and checking your wake lock usage.
It varies but usually 2 or less...
Sprint sent me an airave but now they won't activate it since it's "incompatible" with the epic 4g... So I have to send it back to upgrade to an airave 2 (airvana)
give the app Roam Control a shot. It will change your service towers from Sprint's to Verizon's.

It works great and roaming is included in your Epic's unlimited plan, but don't use it unnecessarily and be aware that it provides only 1X data.

Does roaming use the battery more????????
I think the phone searching for towers and switching between home and roam uses the most battery. I really think its gonna be about the same.

Do you guys turn on the Data Roaming on 3G in the States even if you're not traveling oversea? does it drain battery when you leave it on at all time?

off for me.
I have it on. Even international data roaming. Periodically, on CM7, it says I am internationally roaming, even though I am just in a different state. No effect on battery life that I have noticed

I finally got all my lines ported over to Verizon and am experiencing 5x faster data speeds coming from Sprint.
Of course I am new to ICS and had a quick question. When you into settings, Wireless & Networks, Mobile network and then Network Mode, does having LTE/CDMA on make it so the LTE radio is constantly searching for LTE towers, consequently draining the battery more than having just CDMA on? Appreciate anyones help!
Yes, if you're area doesn't support it, then is is not worth it and you're wasting battery
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
When you have that option on yes both radios are on and LTE is searching for a signal. When you turn it off it powers off the LTE radio and runs on CDMA only saving battery

I haven't even used 4g after coming from Sprint last week. 1.7mbs on 3g is good enough for me. .
I would be more interested to know if 4g sleeps while the phone is off.

It does not. It will stay connected at all times unless your phone cannot get a 4G signal, pretty obvious though.
I just switched too ...this me at work

I figured that was the case but just wanted to confirm with you guys. Have any of you tried with and without both radios on? Battery drain difference?
If both radios are on and you HAVE 4G coverage the battery drain will be noticeable compared to 3G but nothing crazy. If you have both radios on and no 4G coverage your phones battery will drain much faster
Also, some custom roms like AOKP has an option when your screen is off it'll shut the 4G radio (or 4G/3G) data off and when you turn your screen on it'll reconnect

That was one good thing with the GS2 on Sprint, when you weren't using your data the device would put 4G to sleep until it was called on again.
The problem with actually shutting off 4G data when you turn the screen off, what if the device is in the middle of downloading something? Will it just cut it off or finish the active connection and then shut down once complete?

I leave LTE enabled all the time, and most of the time I'm in a non-4G area. The battery drain between having 4G and not having 4G is negligible, and I never switch it. The only thing I do is put the phone in airplane mode at night.
holy **** balls! I have 4G almost anywhere i go! The same place that I got .39 down with Sprint's 3G, I got 26mb down on 4G through Verizon. Didnt even know that was possible. At my home, I get 17 down! Love this phone!

Question for you guys that jumped ship from Sprint. If you left due to the contract change, did you have the etf fees show up on your final bill even though you called and they confirmed they waived them? They told me I would have to call back when they showed up on my bill to have them credited yet I still do not see the fees.

No, I did not have them show up on my account. I did call the day after I ported to make sure they were waiving the ETF. My bill date has ended and I still have a $0 balance.
I think most of the more common custom ROMs (Gummy and AOKP, I know for example) have optional pull-down toggles. 3G is plenty fast for 99% of my phone's use, but it's nice being able to toggle LTE on and off with a single button when I do want it.
For what it's worth, you will notice a greater drain using LTE, but like I've said before the screen is really what kills the battery on this phone.
I had a large ETF on my final Sprint bill. Called and they are supposed to send refund check. Probably hoping people just pay it to leave. Data speed was so slow on Sprint. Not sure why anyone would stay.

I just did the porting yesterday so we'll see. They did say that they'd show up and I'd have to call to get them removed. It bothers me that I paid them what I did for ****ty service. And it only makes them look even dumber after seeing what Verizon's network does.
They also shouldn't be allowed to get away with having such ****ty service, or if they do, they hvae to charge less. Premium data my ass!
I switched over on the 16th. They said I would have to call back in and they would credit my account and end up with a $0 balance.
I leave my wifi on so I can pick up wifi at my work or home to save on data. What is happening with the LTE/cdma radios when wifi is on?
I'm in So Cal (The Valley to be exact) and my phone has had NO service for a few hours now. When I say no service, I mean NO service, I get the circle indicating my device is searching for a network. When I reboot the phone, it connects to Sprint but I don't have any signal. Then soon after that, I COMPLETELY lose service. Hopefully maybe nearby towers are being worked on. Though, seems unlikely at this time of night, AND i'd still be able to connect to another nearby tower. Anyone else having any service issues?
Sprint is going their network vision updates throughout all of la county right now. Trust me, the blackouts are worth it. They're doing work on the towers near me and my speeds are easily topping the 1mb download and upload. So far I've maxed out at a little over 2mb download and 1500kbps upload! I average around 1500kbps down and 1000kbps up. Your signal will be a bit iffy for the next few weeks though.
Edit: there's a new prl update it and at first u had crippling speeds but as I began to use my 3G more, my speeds are increasing. I was freaking out for a bit but just another heads up.

It wasn't down. that's just sprint's normal speed. Seriously though, I'm in the valley and have not noticed a down network, just incredibly slow 3g with random data loss that requires me to turn off data and turn it back on.

I live in Norco/Corona area and I haven't experienced any of these issues :/

Yup expect that for the next month or two. When they worked on the towers near me, it was usually in the early morning. I usually had voice but no data. I say be patient, the speed is worth it. I love being able to clearly stream YouTube videos and Pandora now.

I use to work for sprint. Climbing towers. When I was there we tried to get the work done with least impact but a lot of it is driven by sprint's request and how many people are using the tower. If you have consistant LoS call sprint and ask them to check the tower or ask for them to open a ticket for a line sweep. Some of the times we had bent cables, which will block a lot of the signal.

I was at a client location in a remote area yesterday so I didn't have a clear signal. It's a surgery center so even wifi connections are difficult.
While I was in one of the operating rooms where I have no signal, my GNII started beeping and it went into Roaming mode complete with the helper screen (like the one that comes up if you remove the S Pen or plug in headphones). I'm suspecting this happened because the client has one of those personal cell devices that plugs into their LAN like a mini tower so people get a stronger signal -- and my phone picked the Verizon signal.
I know nothing about "roaming" with Sprint. Apparently there is a Voice and Data roam. Are we charged anything if we use either? Is that the purpose of Roam Guard?
The purpose is to scare you. No charge just don't go over the 300mb soft limit of data. Turn off the roam guard and it won't bother you anymore.
