[Q] Best Kernal for NAND... - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Android Development

Hi Everybody!
I have been using Android on my Tytn2 for a while now, but every couple of days the data gets curroupted or loss (install is on Nand). Can anyone advise if there is a stable kernal out there yet that dosnt have the data curruption issues? I dont mind the phone being slightly slower, I just dont want to keep re-installing everything every couple of days. I have tried clemsyn's kernel on #63 and the kernal downloaded by aTools so far...
I would install to the SD card but for some reason my phone keeps ejecting the SD card whenever data is written to it
thanks in advance!

Unfortunately, all of the kernels suffer from the data corruption on the NAND chip. So far the only one that doesn't have this issue is the 2.6.25 kernel, but it's so out dated now that most builds being released now barely work with that kernel. When using the 2.6.32.9 Kernel, we recommend /system on NAND and /data on SD Card partition or data.img.
Most kernels are still using the EXT2 file system setup for the sd card installations, but if you check out my kernel in my signature, it does the EXT4 file system for sd card installation which has proved to be slightly faster.
There are certain builds out there that have an issue with the SD Card mounting. Recommend either using a build by clemsyn or aceoyame which have the fixed SD Card mounting issues.
Hope this helps.

I have used quite a few ROMs, and functionality wise the Froyo ones are great and are also cracking fast, e.g. not so super froyo and scooter's CM6. However, i experienced data loss frequently and as this is my only phone i didn't really want that.
installing sys to nand and data to SD (partition or img) is a good way to stop corruption but even then i managed to corrupt my data.
after reading around a bit it's been said that the Donut builds are most stable and don't get data corrupted, i'm testing this now and fingers crossed it works well.

Thanks for the replys. At the moment, I am using the 2.6.25 kernal and im still getting data loss, is that not normal then? Mayby my Nand chip might be on the way out
If this dosnt work out, Im looking to get a Wildfire - anyone Tytn users had a play with these? Are they any good?

On that note, is there a command I can run in terminal to check the Nand? I have 2 of these phones (one has a broken screen), so I guess I could swap the bits if it is the Nand...

Get a better phone. Personally I would go with Hero or Legend or even Motorola/LG equivalents. Wildfire is QVGA and an underdog.
2.6.25 is fully supported with dzo's Fresh Froyo variants provided you install the wifi update after installing kernel on the build. The CM builds require 2.6.32s (including the CM7 build). Correct me if I am wrong.

ALL AOSP Roms FAIL, Help

I don't post here often, but I am on IRC all the time for those of you that do know me. I have been having serious issues with the AOSP Roms. Cyanogen, Ruby, and Incredible Does all either freeze on me or reboot sooner or later. I've went so far as to install nothing else except the Rom and it still freezes or reboots. I've done this test with all three, I even dialed down the processor while on them and still NO DICE. I'm not an Android expert, but I do have a bachelor's in IT so I feel I'm pretty tech savvy. I was told on IRC that others are having similar problems with all the AOSP roms. I'm trying to get a consensus of who else is experiencing this and some more suggestions on how to fix this.
I appreciate all the help
~Thanks , AnthonyKash
Yeah this is very odd. A couple of us in ##incredibleroms have been working with AnthonyKash to figure this out. So far we have had no luck at all. No Sense UI ROMs do this to him, it seems like it's only vanilla ROMs. Very strange............

I know you posted this months ago but was wondering if you figured out what is causing this? I too can't use ANY aosp Rome because they all end up being unusable after a couple of hours. It's almost like the CPU slows down to a dramatic crawl. Only way to fix is to do a battery pull to reset. I have cleared cache, dalvik, uninstalled setcpu, all with no luck. Anyone have any insights?
Check integrity and space of SD card - maybe even remove, copy contents to PC, reformat to FAT32, copy a few nandroids back to SD and reinstall in device. Also make sure there is ample space on SD.
Absent that, have you tried a different SD card? AOSP ROMs interface w/ the SD considerably more than Sense ROMs.
Also, check radio version - recommend at least 2.15.xx
HBOOT version may come into play as well.
+1 to the above post. Seems like some sense files are bring left somewhere.

I don't think its my SD Card, I just got a new one a month ago and the same thing happened with my old SD Card. I have 4 gigs left empty of a 16 gig sd card. Would it make a difference if I installed from EMMC using RA recovery?
Hboot 0.92
Radio 2.15.00.09.01
Am on the latest versions of Hboot and radio right?
One thing I do find very weird is that even after doing full wipes of user data, cache and dalvik, when I boot up on CM7 my wifi settings still work. I would have expected I needed to reenter all of those settings. Or does this stuff get saved to the SD or internal storage...normal? If it is not, then why are data wipes in Recovery not cleanning up my files?
I've not had this problem.

Yep, those are the latest versions.
AOSP ROMs offer automatic reinstall of apps and data to Google when flashing, if that option is checked when flashed. That's where/how/why settings and/or apps still appear as before.
So, if Sense ROMs are not wonky, maybe it is an app you have installed on the AOSP ROM?
Long diagnostic road, (well understood by us IT folk ) but perhaps uninstall apps in reverse install date order of the app, reboot as you go thru, see which one may have been a culprit.
Absent that, perhaps factory reset in recovery, install an AOSP rom w/out choosing to reinstall apps.
Maybe try another different AOSP ROM?
I know the SD interacts quite a bit more with the SD compared to Sense ROMs - again, maybe copy SD card contents to PC, reformat SD to FAT32 either on the PC or in phone, maybe both - then d/l an AOSP ROM on a clean SD, see if it's still wonky.

Sense ROMS work great, its AOSP roms that are giving my phone fits lol. Well last night I tried something new.
-I changed my radio from 2.15.00.09.01 to 2.15.00.07.28 Official Froyo radio.
-Installed CM7 #14 from the EMMC versus SD CARD.
-"Hit Wipe All" in recovery about 10 times in a row before I flashed CM7
I hope changing the radio to "official" is what does it. Anyone running AOSP roms using the leaked radio 2.15.00.09.01 ?
Radio?
Yes, do let us know whether the xx.09 radio was the (a) culprit.
I run the older 2.15.xx.07.28 one, never had issues w/ AOSP ROMs.
I had an issue with this using cm7 nightlies, and I WOULD post it there but the new, ~totally awesome~ rule they are implementing (can't post in the dev forum w/ less than 10 posts) prevents me from doing that (Which means I have to spam the other sub forums?).
ANYWAYS, I got a bigger sd card from a friend, and I went to erase it under the sd card settings. Then i got a low space notification, saying I had 9 mb free of 7 Terbytes. Rebooting the phone caused it to go into boot loop. If your situation sounds like mine then do this
Boot into CWM, and from there you can mount the SD card and format it, as well as copy any backups.
I did not have any luck with restoring the phone to a previous AOSP rom, even after wiping the cache/dalvik. Maybe there's another one that could be wiped that I didn't do. Anyways, I installed a Sense based rom, and from there I was able to install Cyanogen mod.
Good luck.

Well it turns out that the radio version I was using was not the issue because the phone became unresponsive this morning when I tried to wake it up. To be specific, it does allow me to swipe to unlock but painfully in slow motion.
So that rules at the radio...which leaves me with its either the ROM/Kernel or some rogue app.
So this morning I wiped all user data in recovery and reinstalled CM7#14 but this time I did not log on to my google account during setup and have not installed any apps. So far no issues, but the true test is trying to wake the phone up tomorrow in the morning. If there are no issues, then that solves it (ITS A FREAKING APP).
If it is a rogue app that has been haunting me these past couple of weeks then who has the best way to identify which one is the offender? Why would a rogue app only affect me using AOSP roms and not Sense?
My suspicions are with..(Locale, Beautiful Widgets, ADW EX, Swype, CardioTrainer, Handcent) but I guess process of elimination is what its going to take.
Thanks to all for the help and recommendations.

Best Android Build!

hi guys,i'm wondering, what is the best and stable Android build that u haved tested? i see alot of builds here but i dont know witch one to choose
All builds are pretty good, it really depends on your personal taste, and what you're looking for.
I'm running Not So Super Froyo Latest RLS, with 2.6.25 kernel by l1q1d, so far pretty good build.
Had several crashes the last 2 weeks, but all kernel related to phone sleeping, but minor data corruption (fixed by reinstalling the corrupted app, unless it's a system file then I just reinstall the build)

your systems apps should not get corrupted, potentially minor data loss though because of the odexing process the classes.dex files are not kept in the dalvik cache. so the only thing that could have a problem is the launcher.
this is what the reboot protection was moving the dalvik to the sd so that way it wasnt kept on the system, since the sd does unmount when shutting down
for me the best is Fat Free Froyo with lastest 2.6.25 kernel from git.
The stability really comes from the .25 kernel as it is much more older and mature. My barebones build might work with .25? I haven't tested it but I recall someone saying it worked.
I don't think it will work since scooters cyanogen has a different libskia than other builds

Apparently that doesn't work for me, especially with the 2.6.32 kernel. No matter how I reboot (button, battery, actual menu option), almost all apps get corrupted, and the Framework gets completely shot the **** (no lock screens, unable to silence phone or turn on Airplane mode).
The Dalvik move to SD apparently doesn't work for me either, unless it's only on a certain build? I'm using Not So Super Froyo RLS18.
I must reflash rom every one -two day, its crash, not workink proceses, system its very slow, after restart phone not remember settings and sometimes delete any data. i test very much roms,
Best Android build is Warbyte Donut for me, very stable and all works fine and quickly, but it is Donut and I Need Froyo..
i see
i got instaled a Donut build, but the white screen and the file system coruption made me to switch back to Wm i'll w8 untill a new build will appeare
fat free
I've got the fat free froyo on kaiser with .32 kernel downloaded with atools.
It works fine with an sd system install (class 6). Fast and stable.
You can olso try system on nand and data on sd! I could not do this because my nand is corrupt....but the result was really good.
The problem you were having was caused by your kernel not the build

Yes it was a kernel fault. Listen to people who are more knowledgeable than yourself. Next time install kernel from '25 branch which is stable and doesn,t suffer from white screens and data corruption. The kernel you used was experimental and it still doesnt work as well as we would want it to.

need a desire vets advice

hello all. i just recenlt bricked my galaxy s telus fascinate and got a desire replacement. i managed to get the root working without a issue (was superscared because of previous brick). now im looking for a rom. a good rom. coming from touch wiz, sense is mint. i love it.
so i want something that like stock sense with sense widgets without all the bloat and hopefully a proper app2sd (the stock app2sd is only moving like 1/3 of the data to sd and 2/3 is stayin in internal storage) . i heard desire hd roms r good but i dont really see the upside cause i dont know much about the phone yet just the OS. im runnin froyo 2.2 with hboot 93.0001.
any info would b mint. thx in advance
ps. only 1 day in, and the desire is running laps around the fascinate in every aspect except afew hardware issues like
-no internal sd card
-psx4droid is alot slower but i do own a hacked psp so no biggy
-and the app2sd sucks considering i went from 2 gigs internal storage to 133 mbs
but interface rocks. awaiting some opinions
You may want to take a gander at this thread: http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/231930-desire-index-everything-desire-here.html
It has links to all the usual suspects when it comes to the different ROMs available, and once you get familiar with the ones that are out there you can do more detailed searches to see which one you may like the most. After that just download and get to flashing. As long as you nandroid backup before flashing anything you can always go back.

what about kernels? i had a overclocked voodoo kernel on my sgs and it ran games and emulators amazingly. ff9 on ps4drioid was running like 95% speed. any speed kernels or voodoo kernels available? and allso i hear the best way to manage storage is data and app2sd +. how do i go about installing that? b4 or after i flash the rom?
1. The Desire has an Adreno GPU, not a PowerVR SGX - so the graphics performance will be MUCH more slower, than the GS'. Also I use this kernel, gives me the best performance.
2. Most custom ROMs have that feature preinstalled (so installs automatically, when flashing the ROM), just make sure you have partitioned your SD Card (fat32+ext 2/3/4).

how do i go about partitioning the sd card? lm fat with a fresshreformat from my pc. now im quite sure ext/4 is the safest and most stable partition to use and 2 being the worst. on sgs, voodoo did the ext/4 for me and didnt have to do the work. so im confused on this part since ive seen nothing with a voodoo tag on it since i joined. and voodoo had to be deactivated everytime u flashed new software. does that still apply here>?
Use Gparted or easus partition for that.
Create a FAT32 partition first and then an ext4 partition (both primary).
You have to look for a2sd+ here in the ROMs description to make it work (LeeDroid definiately works). Make sure you have partitioned the SD card then just flash the ROM (of course nandroid backup first & full wipe) and it will go, you have to do nothing. It is an auto-script.

how do i use this program?
A very good tutorial how to use Gparted, if you have no idea.

How did you root your desire? With Unrevoked? What custom recovery do you have CWM or Amon RA?
How to make a nandroid backup.
Also search youtube and this forum on HOW to use a custom recovery.

nvm i looked around and foundout titanium backup shows apps2sd drive. sweet. thx 4 all the help so far desire has a large lead on the fascinate. looks so beautiful

Battery and Lag Isuues Starburst

I made a thread on this before and didnt get much help so this im doing it right.
Size of sdcard used: 8gb Kingston class 4
Size of each partition created and type of partitions made : Primary fat 32 (4.7gb) and Primary EXT4 (2gb)
Software used for partitioning (Gparted, Amon Ra recovery etc): Gparted
Recovery Software installed, with version and subversion number (Eg: Clockworkmod 3.0.0 R3): Clockwork Mod Recovery 2.5.0.7
Whether you are S-OFF or S-ON (If you dont know what this is, or you dont have the picture of a Joker holding a card, on the bootup screen, you are S-ON): S-OFF
Detailed account of steps you did for the procedure, with output/errors at each step as received from the Recovery/Partitioning software: This part im not too clear about
Did you do a full wipe from Recovery before installation?: Yes
If you didnt, what ROM were you running previously?:
Version of the ROM you installed, and the names of the Data2SD installer/reinstaller flashable zips you used (if any.): Starburst (1.3.3.5) – Standard Edition Data2Sd installer (Stable) VersionCode :1.3tiny
If you’re using a custom kernel, full name of the kernel with author name, the kernel voltage if known, whether you have an overclocked/undervolted configuration: None
Did you get any of the following messages in recovery? …………………………………….
sd-ext could not be formatted, file already exists?
Failure mounting ‘sd-ext’
Or a message similiar to the above?: No
My battery is draining in 9 hours of moderate use opposed to full days or more before rooting and using this custom rom. It also lags now, it will be all zippy then it will freeze for a few seconds or just lag insanely. Maybe the battery issues are stemming from the cpu working too hard trying to deal with the lag. Thats just me brainstorming but ya, if anyone could help me out here I would greatly appreciate it.
(As of now I am using a default homescreen free of all custom apps to see if the problem is stemming from one of them) EDIT: it made no difference so I am assuming it is not a running app.
(Also, it lagged as soon as starburst was installed so maybe the apps have nothing to do with it. Another issue is that when I press the power button to turn the screen on the screen dosent always turn on. This is another issue associated with the lag that is bothering me)
A note. The battery melts away when I start to use apps, the internet or anything that takes the phone out of standby mode. If I'm correct the kernel in the starburst rom overclocks the CPU to one thousand and something. Maybe this could be my problem. And if you think this may be the case could you recommend a better kernel to me? Thanks

I think I may have figured out the issue. You see, when I first installed the rom I restored my default settings effectively replacing my new fancy rom with the old one.
When I wiped the internal memory (2 gb or so off of ext 4 primary I think) the external still had a few files on it from the last install of the rom. I left those there thinking they would be no issue. Could those remnants from my first starburst install be the cause of my issues?

Wipe and repartition with Gparted, this time only leave 1 Gb for ext4. Dont install Setcpu and dont manually set vdd levels for kernel. See if it lags before any apps are installed. If it doesnt try restoring apps with Titanium and see again. Since you do have 10 posts, why dont you continue this qn in StarBurst thread? Please dont PM me. I rarely if ever check these!
Btw..you can also flash the Leedroid 2.2f from Kernels section of my site. It's known for its better battery life.
Should we erase all previous files when updating roms? Do they cause trouble?

If your previous installation worked fine, no need to wipe. If you are coming from another Rom, you definitely need to wipe

hTC Desire keeps freezing after on rooted ROMs

Hey guys.
A while ago I`ve rooted my hTC Desire and did an S-OFF, to be able to install custom ROMs.
I`ve "tested" a few custom ROMs, but none of them seemed to be stable.
Currently I`m on SuperNova_Classic_2.0.2.0 with built in Data2SD (iData2SD)(the idea is to have a stable rooted ROM, with DATA2SD and Sense), but every time I flash the rom, then install my fav apps, the phone keeps freezing at certain points, sometimes it runs OK for a week - with no freezing - other times it freezes in the first couple of days after ROM flash. I`ve tried not to install that many apps, but I`m still facing this freeze problem.
Has anyone experienced this before?
Here are the steps I took for ROM flashing
1. Created a 1GB ext4 partition on SD-CARD, preceded by a FAT32 partition(as required in the tutorial of Supernova)
2. Rebooted into Recovery - wiped data/factory reset; wiped cache partition; wiped Dalvik Cache
3. Installed the ROM zip file from SD-CARD; on first boot, except for the Wi-Fi connection, I haven`t touched anything(google accounts etc. - skipped all steps - ), waited for the system to stabilyze, then did a normal reboot in order for the DATA2SD function to work. After next reboot, DATA2SD was working properly(I even had the pink LED light up), Storage Information was showing the 1GB ext partition as an internal memory.
4. Installed all my apps, configured phone, widgets etc.
This way, at a certain point, the phone simply freezes, have to remove the battery to be able to use it again.
Here are my phone specs:
Bravo PVT1 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-6.93.1002
MICROP-031d
TOUCH PANel-SYNT0101
RADIO-5.17.05.23
ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.2.0
Transcend class 4 - 16GB microSD card
I`ve searched and searched on xda-developers, but haven`t found an answer for my problem, yet.
What am I doing wrong here?
Any help would be DEEPLY appreciated !!!
This is no help to you.... but I'm having exactly the same issue.
Sometimes it freezes when starting a game, but most of the time it won't unlock(ie phone unresponsive when I try to wake it).
This is not ROM related as it happened on several different Roms, with a full wipe between. I'm not overclocking.
The only things I can think of are:
-Partially corrupt ext partition on SD.
-failing hardware.
-some other sw issue ie radio(which has worked for a while before this started happening).
Thanks for your reply, Shaun - it does help, at least now I`m not alone in this
You`re right, it`t not ROM related, I`ve tried different ROMs myself, same problem.
I`ve also tried another SD CARD (class 2).
I don`t think it`s the radio, I have the latest version, the version required on Supernova tutorial for best compliance.
I really don`t want to believe that it`s a hardware fault, as I didn`t overclock either and always read/followed the exact right/official steps in root-ing/flashing ROMs.
I`ve reinstalled Supernova now, with absolutely no additional installation of fav apps. Going on 2 days with no freezeing, so far.
I`ll keep post-ing if any new developments occur.
Cheers.
You've not installed any apps at all? hmmm.
When you do re-install your apps(I assume from Titanium backup?), it'd be interesting to see if it starts freezing again.
This would then suggest either a dodgy app that we both have, or titanium backup itself causing the issue.
What SD card specs?

I'm using the same card that i've had for the last 18 months-
it's an 8gb class 2 card with 768mb partition, the rest is Fat32.
I`ve started reinstalling some of the apps, the most important ones, like iGo, YahooMessenger, YahooMail, etc., but didn`t use Titanium Backup, installed them manually using Market.
So far, so good, no freezing.
My SD CARD specs: Transcend Class 4 - 16GB; 1GB ext2 partition for apps, and the rest is FAT32.

I could be wrong, but from what I`ve seen so far, I would recommend NOT to use widgets that require superuser permissions. Also, before flashing any pre-rooted ROM, be sure to turn "Signature verification" OFF, in the phone`s "Recovery" screen options. If your ROM has any kind of "Data2SD" scripts integrated, after flashing ROM - at first boot, DO NOT configure anything (google account, sync, etc.), DO NOT download/install any apps yet, ONLY enter the Wi-Fi settings(if that is the case); leave the system to stabylize, then do a normal reboot(if the ROM supports "Fast boot" - turn it OFF before rebooting). At second normal boot, the DATA2SD scripts should kick in ( u should see the phone`s notification LED turn to: pink or blue - depending on the script used by the ROM).
A class 2 is a definite no no for Data2sd IMHO. Class 4 is debatable. I had a bit of lag with an older version of data2sd on a class 4. It may be better now, Depends what speed the card writes at really. If its minimum for class (4 MB/s) that could be a bit touch and go. EXT 4 would be the best option for the 2nd partition
I recommend using an a2sd+ solution temporarily to see if the freezes go away
I would mind the lag, I didn`t get any lag using my card though, but just saying, would mind if it would be laggy, the real problem is the constant freezing I`ve had.
If it`ll freeze again, I think I`ll go back to stock Froyo, use Apps2SD and install only the bare minimum.
U know, another thing I never quite understood, I think hTC makes one of the best smartphones on the market, but they limit their possibilites with small batteries and very little internal storage space. What`s up with that?

I'm not using Data2SD. I'm using A2sd+. Same partition that I used on my Hero, and now my Desire for the last 14 months. Still getting freezes.
I don't think it's a speed issue.
a2sd should be fine on a class 2. What a2sd solution is it? Did you move dalvik too?
Its just a logical approach thats needed.
1) Eliminate the SD card by not running from it.
2) Change the rom
3) RUU
If after all that it still freezes, sounds like HW....

Yeah that's pretty much what I was thinking.
I'm currently on InsertCoin with A2SD+. I was on LeeDroid, then RunnyMede before that with the same issue. I did a full wipe when swapping Roms. Not sure about Dalvik- if it's done in the Rom then yes, otherwise I haven't consciously moved it.
1) I might try a different SD that i have lying around- Nandroid it etc.
2) As above, already done that.
3) Last resort. Although a rooted RUU wouldn't be a massive issue for a day or 2.
If it's HW, I better get some insurance.
Edited to add: my SD card is actually a class 4. SD card tests suggests read speeds of 19-20mb/s and write speeds of 7-9mb/s.
Fixed my issue. It's the Kernel. Apparently the latest 2 kernels have the ability to undervoltage when not in use. Unfortunately, this can also cause the lockups i've(and possibly you've) been experiencing.
The last kernel without this in is: 2.6.35.14_110911.
This has 100% solved my issue and I recommended flashing it if you still having the same issue.
Great.
If I get another freeze, I`ll flash the 2.6.35.14_110911 kernel u`ve recommended.
Thanks a lot, dude.
If ever in Romania, look me up, got a few beers with your name on them
LE
If it`s not too much to ask, could you possibly post a download link for that kernel version?

No problem.
I've never been to Romania...
Kernel at the bottom of this post:

Did you flash the kernel while on existing ROM, or did you reflash de ROM as well?
And what ROM are u using with this kernel?
try using the earlier versions of super nova and data2sd, I also had the freezing problem but that was AFTER I upgraded to the newest version of supernova and data2sd
I`m using the 2.0.2.0 version, not the latest 2.4.0.0.
Earlier than 2.0.2.0?

Flashed straight over the top. Insertcoin ROM.
Use the latest Supernova and see. It has a pretty good kernel.
