[Q] help!! cant get 3g to work after insalling new roms - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Now i know theres hundreds of threads about 3G problems and im hoping this one doesnt get over looked . I recently in stalled two custom roms on my evo ( cyanogen 7.0.0 , and miui 1.1.25 ) wiped chaches factory resets etc. on first installations but for some reason my 3G is not being recognized or even showing up when i am using the custom roms. The only way i can use 3G is when i restore my phone back to my stock rom..... can anyone help me fixing the issue ....please. if i can get my 3G up and working while im running my custom roms it will make everything so much easier, instead of having to restore my stock rom when ever i want to do anything on my phone outside a wireless network
oh and kernals etc. are stocks that came with the roms.no customization has been done to the roms themselves.

has nothing to do with the kernels
you have to get msl reader and set your 3g up i think there is a thread in the developer section on it...let me see if i can find it
OK HERE IS THE FIX,
PHONE MUST BE ROOTED
PHONE MUST HAVE SENSE ROM ON IT TO FIX THE PROBLEM
download msl reader from market,
open msl reader,
write down msl code
open dialer
dial ##3282#
when asked for code or password enter the msl code you wrote down
select edit mode
select EVDO
select preferred mode,
set to automatic.
save exit reboot,
load rom of choice
and VIOLA YOU HAVE 3G
CHEERS AND GOOD LUCK

Well for CM7, are you sure you data is enabled? Sometimes tis off when you boot the rom. You can check in mobile data under wifi settings.

while that is true roxxors, since the OP stated two different roms giving him trouble and not having trouble with original load, the problem lies in how the roms read 3g...we all know that sprint roms LIE about 3g...and cyanogen actually reads actual signal...however until that EVDO change is done his phone will never get 3g on any of the cyanogen or miui or even aosp roms....

For those with messed up GPS/4G/USB Connect with CM6

I had non working GPS (5 minute lock) / 4G (Scan forever even with other roms) / and USB connect not connecting on your computer I have a simple fix
Find this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773444
This is stock sprint rom with rooted
Use RAMON recovery and wipe data/cache/dalvik/battery/screen rotation
Flash to stock sprint rom
After doing that my GPS locked before my google maps could even load correctly, my 4g connected immediately 12MBs speed test (Houston, Texas)
And my computer recognizes and actually doesn't drop my phone
It may not work for everybody but it definately works for me
After this I decide to flash to another rom. i don't like paying 10 bucks a month for 4G and not use it. Vaelrom ^^
Last time I checked, there is no 4g in CM6...did I miss something here?
lol
So this activates 4g in cm6? which nightly!?
CM6 does not provide 4G at this time. nothing you can do to fix this unless you can code.
it's AmonRA (like the egyptian god) not RAMON (like noodle)
so basically the OP is giving you this suggestion..
1) always read the First Post for any ROM you want to play with.
...often common issues are listed there...or you can search the thread
2) do a nandroid
...dont forget to delete the old old nandroids...they do take up space
3) if you are having issues...do a full wipe and try a different ROM.
...because we all like a lil strange now and then
(ok..the first two suggestions are mine)
And for all those who don't like their current ROM, I have a fix for that as well...
try a different ROM. It may not work for everyone because the new ROM may not be as cool the one you just had, but it worked for me. Problem solved!

Brand New Rooted Evo With AOSP Rom Now No 3G Help!!

Alright I just rooted my bros brand new evo right out of the box
for some reason when i install an AOSP Rom I keep getting a 1x connection no 3g.
if anybody could help that would be great
His has the 2.10 hboot
everything works on a sense rom but when i install a AOSP rom (CM or MIUI) no 3g
please get back to me asap
Toggle airplane mode. Does it come on and then switch to 1X? Make a nandroid backup and switch to a sense rom if you have a backup. Once in the sense rom update prl and profile.

im having the same problem on MIUI, 3g doesnt come on at all after toggling airplane mode, i even went to a sense rom and updated profile and prl. as well as completely reactivating the phone, the 3g just wont stay on, and ive yet to find a fix for it.
It is possible that you've never had 3G. On the stock rom, the EVO always shows the 3G icon even if you aren't connected to 3G.

+1. On sense ROMS, it always shows 3g, if the data connection is turned on. It is only capable of showing 3g, even if you aren't actually connected to it. In the newer AOSP ROMs, they have the capability to show what you are ACTUALLY connected to at the time, so the AOSP rom is showing you the truth, what you're actually connected to, while the Sense ROM is lying to you, showing that you're always connected to 3g, when in fact, you're not. Flash the sense ROM that shows you're on 3g. Run a speedtest a few times, see what your avg download and upload speed are. Flash over to the AOSP rom, and repeat the same test. I bet they are the same or extremely similar, even though one shows you're on 3g, and the other shows 1x.
No, what is happening is that the AOSP roms DO NOT have the kernel for the new hardware, this is why you are getting no 3g. Go back to the latest sense and wait.

Like the guys said above is because of sense only showing 3G which is really dumb, like at my house I get 4 out of 6 bars in sense and only 2 out 4 in aosp roms and still has the same speed and not problem with phone calls , go out and check if 3G ever comes on and make sure your are is cover by 3G coverage

im on older hardware and the 3g turns on, but when i switch to wifi or turn of the 3g the 3g wont turn back on. ive read all about how the 3g icon and all that is different than on a sense rom but im literally not getting any 3g connection.
I've been running CM7 since it was being compiled by lithid. At some point my 3G broke and I tried to ask for help but never could find a complete answer. At some point someone said the words "##data#" and "call sprint." Below is a step by step guide to what I did to fix 3G and it's been working through numerous wipe/flashes since. If someone already posted this information I apologize. This has worked for me and at least one other person that I know of, so hopefully it doesn't ruin anyone's phone.
1. Download MSL Reader from market, run it and write down results.
2. Nandroid current rom.
3. Flash cauklins format all
4. Flash latest rooted OTA (I found one in the wiki)
5. Boot OTA (I skipped all of the google login/set up stuff)
6. Enter ##3282# (##data#) in to the dialer.
7. Menu will popup select "Edit Mode"
8. Enter MSL when it asks for password.
9. Tap "Data Profiles"
10. Tap Menu button, then "Restore"
11. Phone will reboot in 10 seconds or you can click ok.
12. Hands free activation will come up shortly after phone reboots, then PRL update and Firmware update. (It found no frimware updates I think because I used the latest OTA) Let it process all.
13. Power phone off.
14. Boot to bootloader (hold power + vol down)
15. Select recovery.
16. Flash format all again.
17. Nand restore.
18. Enjoy working 3g.
I did all this the first time on the phone with sprint. As soon as I booted the OTA I had 3g again, I just told them it was broken and they gave me the steps. I just did it all again while typing this to verify that it works rather than try to rely on my memory of what i did.
Hope this helps. I also did the ##gpsclrx# while I had that sprint garbage installed.
If these are instructions to seriously break your phone, can someone who knows better than me please correct me. So far I've had no problems, other than fixed 3G
SgtUSMC method worked for me. Great stuff man, thanks!

Super weird instance... 1x

I have tried several roms, with this phone, on the newest radio, keep in mind, I have 2 Evos, the first one I rooted it and flashed cm7 nightlies with the STOCK kernel, then I went and grabbed my wifes phone and did the SAME exact thing, but she is stuck in 1x, what gives and can anyone tell me if they experienced this?
EDIT: Stock I mean cy's nightly kernel. This just doesn't make sense. I called Sprint to have them force a prl update, no luck.
UPDATE:

This happened to me as well when I rooted my mom's phone. We both had CM roms and the same kernels, yet her phone was showing 1x while mine was showing 3x. If it's a coverage issue then just try going to a place with better coverage but if you have my issue, just flash to a sense rom and enter ##3282#, go to edit mode, enter your msl, EVDO, select preferred mode, set it to automatic then press menu and commit modifications and let it reboot (got this off of one of the cyanogenmod EVO threads) and this should work. It definitely worked for me. Just make sure you're wife is actually stuck on 1x before doing this.

So if its not actually stuck, then what harm could it do?
Moderators please post SOLVED in the title please!
Glad I could help out! and to answer your previous question, if it wasn't actually stuck then I guess it's just better leaving well enough alone. We don't really mess with those codes unless it's absolutely necessary because you never know, you could actually mess something up.

Broke my 3g! :((

Ok, so I was running MIUI and I needed to do the 3g fix to get my data speeds up to par. Here are the steps I followed:
Go to the Market and download the app: MSL Reader
Use this app to get your MSL #
Flash to any GingerSense ROM (I used VR_GengerSense_Revolution_B4 with success. Has the nicest boot animation I have seen. ROM so pretty I stayed away from MIUI for a minute LOL.)
Launch phone dialer and dial ##DATA# (##3282#)
Select Edit Mode
Enter the MSL Number from above as the password
Select Data Profile
Press Menu button
Select Restore
Your phone will enter Commit mode and automatically reboot
Nandroid back to MIUI and enjoy better 3G speeds!
I got as far as commit mode, the phone didn't automatically reboot so I did it manually. The phone got stuck at the white screen where I pulled the battery, then just gave up and went back to MIUI. When I was back in MIUI, I saw I didn't have data at all! So then I went back to the GingerSense ROM and tried to do the data fix again, but to no avail. I have no 3g. When I am in the edit mode in data profile my username is blank, whereas there was something there before I tried to restore data. Are there any fixes for this?
Flash another sense rom snd see what you get

Yes, try a different Sense ROM. I have performed this fix countless times with no issues and have recommended it with great success.
I'm not sure why your phone did not reboot on its own, but it should have. Flash back to Sense and update your profile Settings>Updates (I think) then perform the ##DATA# fix. While you are at it, update your Radio, etc. to the latest.
You guys were right! I just tried another sense rom and it worked like a charm! And updating my profile from settings gave my 3g back before I did the 3g fix

Network configuration corrupt with Cyanogenmod backup.

Hello, so here is my problem. I have been using Cyanogenmod 13 on my LG G3/ls990 for months now. Recently I needed a static IP address through Sprint. When they applied the static IP to my account, I was stuck on 3G, even though I mostly have LTE. Basically what I did was use an old stock rom backup to update my PRL/Profile. This brought back my LTE service. Then I reloaded my CM13 backup. Unfortunately, at first it didn't recognize my sim card, and then it only recognized 3G. Okay, so no problem, I decided I would just go back to the stock rom and clean install a new custom rom. Unfortunately, when I went back to the stock rom, it was also stuck on 3G and this time when I tried to update the PRL/Profile it didn't work, I am guessing because it already saw these as updated. So after a few chats with Sprint's tech support, I was able to get LTE to work again. She said a particular network configuration file wasn't working right, and she did something which was suppose to fix it. As instructed, I typed in code ##72786# after she did it, and LTE worked perfectly. Stupidly, I thought it would be as simple as reloading my CM13 backup. Yet it did it again when I loaded the backup, and now I am stuck on 3G again. Before this I didn't really connect the two together. Does anyone know what exactly is happening here? Tomorrow I plan to call Sprint again, to get them to fix the file, but is there a way I can do it myself, in case I have this problem again when I install a new custom rom? For example, if I go into ##Data# will I fix things by changing a setting in there or something? I hate having to talk to Sprint every time this messes up, and yeah, I know it was stupid of me to do the same thing twice, but it was a day apart and I forgot what I had done the first time. Hopefully whomever I talk to tomorrow can figure out what the woman I spoke with did, because she definitely knew what she was doing. Thank you for all of your help!
Update: Called Sprint they reset my network and I have LTE again. I am somewhat wary of installing a new rom but would like one for resolving performance issues and wifi tether. I downloaded an unofficial Lineage 15 Rom yesterday while I was on 3g only, but it couldn't find my sim. Is there a way to backup my current network settings?
Update 2: So I just tried a fresh install of Lineage 15 and it didn't work. First it recognized cell but no data. Then I went into data settings chose carrier settings that crashed, "android.com. [something]has stopped working" , the sim was unrecognizable after that and the carrier settings weren't there any longer. I backed up my EFS partition in the stock rom before installing, but then I was stuck on 3g even despite that. I called Sprint again, and got them to reset my network settings. Don't want to keep calling them though.
Anybody here with Sprint and a static IP that can recommend a ROM that will work and not mess up my network settings? I don't care if it is Marshmallow or Nougant, I just want something that doesn't overheat my phone and which I can have native tethering.
EDIT: I was able to install Fullmics and retain my LTE.
