Alternative for Location app - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there any alternative for Location app? cause if we use ROMs without sense, we will not have access to the "downloaded" map stored into our device.

1. do you mean other GPS application. I recommended Papago X5.
http://forum.malayandroid.com/t39-papago-x5-for-android
2. you can download "Maps" in market but first since you're from Malaysia, you must download "MarketEnabler" from market. then go to setting list, point to [us]T-Mobile , open your market again, and search Maps. there you go.

Google map

Is there a way too download the whole google map?
I dont want to pay data connection for using GPS.
Thanks.
hi, it s second time i see that s kind of funny question.
google map is a online only tools.
the amount of data that google hosting is huge.
satellite photo of the world, tons of poi, ...
so terrabite of data.
it s so easy to understand that no phone could never, ever, host
google map.
have fun
An alternative then?
thanks
TomTom, Navigon, Route 66 etc...
iGO8 is also an alternative.. A little bit of tweaking but worth it.
Anyways, was Google maps preinstalled on your HDs? I didn't have it on mine from the box but the funny thing is that HD Tweak still allowed me to assign a shortcut for it (left or right softkey)
Try java MGMaps. I did not tried it on blackstone but it should work. It supports multiple map providers (google, yahoo, microsoft) and there was an external tool (i don't remember its name, never used it) for predownloading maps - it can work offline too.

Yes, there is Terracrosser : http://terracrosser.com/
It allows to perform exactly what you want to do. First, you use Mapper (included) to download maps on your PC. There they get packed so that you can copy them into the Terracrosser folder on your phone.
However, as Geistteufel already said, downloading such maps takes alot of space. Plus, you should not abuse with the downloads, that is downloading the whole world or a continent or a bigger country, as Google keeps a blacklist. You don't wanna become (black)listed, do you ? Actually, I don't know if that which you can do with the Mapper tool is even legal ...
You can use Google Navigator. When registered you can download a map area with a range of depths. Or simply browe the surface of the Earth and you'll get on you card a big file containing all that you have seen, like in desktop Google Earth.
Georgeous2008,why would I be blacklisted for download a lot?
Wowozanga, can I get a link? Is it free?
I tried the Terracrosser program and it looks hard to use as the gps keeps shifting left or right non stop.
I cant even open the Mapper app because it just gives a unexpected shutdown on the program.
I gave up with it.
How about gpsVP?
originally, it was for Garmin vector maps, but currently it also displays Google/Live/OpenMap map and satellite. Maps gan be cached by the XP version, and the cache folder synced to the handheld.

Refer to the Google Maps general conditions for further information.
Google Navigator
Google Navigator:
http://www.pdafun.net
Last version is 4.6.
For the convenience of space you may want to install on a SD card of at least 2 GB, formated with FAT32.

Ill give it a shot.
Thanks a lot.

Hi there,
Try GPS Tuner, in their forum they have mentioned a tool with which you can download the google maps for any area at any depth. I am currently using it and also GPS Tuner is the best. (But the tool is downloading maps in JPG format so you will not be able to make searches for POI etc.
GPS Tuner
I have been using GPS Tuner for a long time, but you have to use other programs to download the tiles of image (Google Satellite Maps Downloader), or use big jpegs (captured in Google Maps on PC) already calibrated with the PC soft that come with GPS Tuner (Map Calibrator) that are working veeeeery sloooow. After a couple of images downloaded with Google Satellite Maps Downloader, Google will ban you IP address for 24 hours, and you will not get other images.
In Google Navigator everything you have downloaded remains in archive and can be used when offline, with roadmap, satelite view, depending which mode you were using when browsing the Earth surface and the level of zoom. This program is "trusted" by Google Maps and you can download a lot of images. If eventually you will get banned, you have a command to reactivate the path to Google Maps.
Now I'm just waiting for a "medicine " for the current version.
Best regards,
Wowozange

As already mentioned by someone else the mapping data that google hosts for us is so big that one can hardly image its size. Have a look here, the first link. I just hope that this very valuable service will remain available for free despite the global financial black hole .
Now to your particular need, the mobile version of Google earth has also a local cache (possibly configurable!?) so when you are online at a flat rate you can "pre"-visit the place you will later be going offline so as to download the mapping data on your device in advance.
I believe terracrosser is fantastic for that use, but dont work on blackstone...
Anyone can help about this?

[Q] Contact address show - default action

Hi,
when clicking on the (street) address of a contact in the HTC Desire HD contact app, I'm not offered a choice anymore. The default action now is to open the address in the HTC locations application. I used to get a choice between HTC locations, Google Maps, and other navigation programs. I do not want to use HTC locations.
I can't find a way to get the choice back again. I downloaded DefaultApp Reset by T.Fujii from the market and it offered to delete the default actions of HTC Sense and the Browser. I did that, without success. Looking in other threads the advice was to use ClearDefault from the market. I couldn't find that one, but I guess DefaulApp Reset does the same.
I can go to settings > applications > manage applications, and delete default actions of programs. In fact, the DefaultApp Reset just takes you there too. None of the applications I associate with my problem have the possibility to hit "clear default actions", they're all greyed out. I have looked into the following applications:
Contacts
Contact widget
Friend stream and - widget
HTC Hub
HTC Likes
HTC location service
HTC Sense
HTC Sync
Settings
Settings wizard
Location
Locations
Locations launcher
Locations widget
Maps
Settings widget
Street View
Maybe the names are a bit wrong, I'm not using english on my device.
After clearing HTC Sense and Browser with the app, no more new applications show up anymore that can be undone from default actions.
What can I do?

I never had the choice. It always went to Google maps, but now goes to HTC Locations. This came up on another thread - it could have been over on Androidfourms - and there is nothing to change to fix it on a stock phone (that anyone has found - maybe if it's rooted). All I want is to be able to see the full postal address in writing and then, *if* I wanted, to then see it on a 'map'.
After checking a few apps out I went and installed Youlu and it does exactly what I want. Shows the address then launches Google maps if you tap it. It'd be good to be able to change the application that is launched but you can't have everything ....
Dave
Hmm, that would suck. I'm pretty sure I had the choice once....
I figured it out, all of a sudden. When you are in the contact list, you can click on the picture of a contact in stead of on the name. Then you get a small widget that has a Map option to the utmost right. That one opens a window where I can chose between Google Maps and Waze, where I was looking for.
That doesn't solve your problem but does solve mine. Happy again!

You're right. Sort of .... On mine (latest OTA update - the one that was pulled) I get that widget but choosing the map option gets me Google maps. No choices. very strange that touching the address gets you Locations but the map option on the contact picture is Google ..... Me thinks HTC's software engineers need some better QA testing!
Dave
Well the choice I get is between Maps and Waze. So, if you don't use Waze - which you should by the way - that might be the reason you don't have a choice.
Or, it could be that you have ticked the always use this action box. You might be able to undo that, using the method I described in my topic start. BTW, it seems that deleting to many apps' default actions broke up all Auto Sync on my device. Got it up and running now after some fiddling around.
Easy check: download Waze from the market and see if you get a choice.
I'm wondering what the requirements for an app are to show up in the choice list.
wanted to post the same...
... question...
my dhd stock newest OTA update also doesnt ask which maps application should be startet.
it just opens "locations" instead of asking.
thanks for the workaround over the contact list, works fine ;=) but isn't a solution...
best regards,
mike
Any update for this problem ?
searching as you are
sorry, just a few days ago i searched google again.
no solution found :=)

[Q] Gmaps app not opening links from email / sms etc

My other phone is a HTC desire running stock Froyo. My primary phone is a Nexus S.
I search for a places using the Maps app (on Nexus S) and then choose to share via SMS with the Desire. When I open the SMS on the Desire and click on the link it defaults to opening up google maps for mobile web via the HTC browser rather than opening up the maps application.
Anybody else have this problem or know how to resolve? I tried resetting the defaults for the HTC browser but it says that none are set anyhow.
All help welcome.
Thanks
Maksy
I guess what I am trying to say is that links to google maps are opening up in the web browser and not the google maps application. Which is what I want to happen as you get much more functionality with the app over the browser version.
Maksy
Well android have a way of letting any app handle something called intents, and when you open something like a maps link an intent should be thrown. Then it is up to the system and the intent filters of the map app to handle it correctly.
As such a link can be handled by both the app and the browser, it lets you choose a default, so if you have accidentally set the default to the browser, try to go into settings and manage applications. Then find the browser and choose reset defaults.
Unfortunately I had already tried resetting the defaults for both maps and browser but that the reset defaults button was greyed out suggesting that no defaults had been defined
Thanks for helping
Maksy

Can't see all apps on google play website

So when I go to the market website and click on My Apps it only lists apps up to the 'M's... anything past that I can't see.
I use this page to re-install apps when changing devices / after resets.
Is there any way to see a listing of all of my apps?
Don't know if this helps, but if you install the newest play app (i posted the apk here somewhere), it has the same kinda page now (an all apps installed history), you could install from there?
Sent from my calculator watch.
Thanks, I will check that out! Although I think using a KB/Mouse on my PC would still be more convenient than finger-scrolling and tapping on the phone screen :/
At least that should get me access to everything I'm missing.
My suggestion is,
1. delete market data and cache
2. From settings > sync settings > select google deatails > remove account
3. reboot
4. create your google account again
5. from market, check it again.
Hope this work.
Question - are you using market unlocker?
He's having the problem with the online version of the market, on his computer, not the phone app.

My bad kingdazy.
I've just checked out to find the installed apps from PC.
It seems like there are two ways.
1. from the market home page > My Adnroid Apps (from there we can reinstall the apps) - alphabetical order
(this one shows the history even the apps are uninstalled, those are there)
2. Google account dashboard > Android Market > installed applications (most recent first)
So, if you compare these two lists and if you find anything missing, then you'd better to contact Google support team. If both are the same, maybe there're gonna be none who can help you.
My two cents.
The first list is missing everything after the M's...
The second list has them all though... I'll use that for a work-around for now
I'm having an issue with apps on sd not showing up after a reboot. I have to clear data to get them to show again. This new market is annoying.

Show Me v Google Maps

I dont really like "Show Me" app and much prefer Google Maps, previously on my desire if I select a contacts address or an appointment address it would show it on Google Maps, however now on my new One X it does it through Show Me App.
Is there anyway to get the ROM (Calendar & Contacts) to use Google Maps to do this? Will I need to remove Show Me from the ROM for it to use Google Maps or willl that not work either, any help would be much appreciated.
I figure I cannot be the only person who thinks Show Me app is poor and Google Maps is far better.
Thanks in Advance!
Use titanium backup to remove show me and locations and it will default to gmaps. Why you cant choose which app loads by default is beyond me and VERY annoying!!
Thanks, haven't tried it yet but your reply is much appreciated!
Download the following app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=tw.kenshinn.htccalendarfilter&hl=en
Select 'Other map', Set to Default and then choose Google Maps and again Set to Default.
No rooting required.

Brilliant, thanks.
Awesome!
Whilst I will remove the Show Me & Location apps when I am rooted as I deem them to be bloatware, this is an excellent solution until then, much appreciated.
