[Q] Partitoned and cant go bak! - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i recently partitoned my htc evo 4g,but i have no idea how to undo it.Ive heard you can just use normal hardrive management software, but when i plug my fone in and open it in my computer,it says under it FAT32 and a little dialog box popsup saying "acess denied".I was hoping there would be someway to recover all my stuff on the sd card,or is it all gone, because all of a sudden i have like 6.89gb left on my sd ,and before this accident i only had like 191mb.

The only way to undo ir is ro repartition it. Im not aware of anything like Partition Magic for smartphones or SD cards.

Does your computer have a card reader or do you have access to a card reader to see if it can be done?

That is where I'm confused. Normally, when you partition a card, all of its contents are erased. My question to you is this: after you partitioned your card, were you able to access its contents? If so and if you have amon RA as your recovery, go into recovery, plug your EVO to your computer and then select the "MS-USB" option from within recovery. Your card should mount and be seen by your computer. You should be able to copy the contents of your card to your computer of all is well. If not, consider the contents erased and simply re-partition the card from within recovery or go to the wipe menu of the recovery and select "wipe SD card"
Posting & replying via the XDA Premium app

On my mac, when my phone is plugged in, it will recognize both partitions and format the whole card.
Also, you can go into recovery and partition the card again, but choose 0 for heap and 0 for partition. It will reformat with not partition.

You can repartition either using recovery and selecting 0 for the ext partition size, or use windows diskpart utility to delete/repartition. Under windows, you will need a third party utility to format the space as fat32 however.

Cannot take pics :unable to save file to sd card due to insufficient file permissions

Hi geeks
Problem when i try to take pictures.
Does anybody have a fix for that issue "unable to save file to sd card due to insufficient file permissions".
Formatting SD or rebooting doesn't seems to fix the problem indefinitely.
error message come back after a little while.
I don't want to hard reset unless it really fix the problem!
Is it a defective sd or a bug or else ?
Many thanks

HaHa, I have the same problem with taking Pics on my Desire too, I get "unable to save file to sd card due to insufficient file permissions"
I defragged my SD Card yesterday using Windows 7 defrag tool but I doubt it's damaged it long term. If I figure out a fix i'll let you know...
FIXED!
- Press Menu/Settings
- SD & Phone Storage
- Unmount SD Card
Turn off your phone then take out the SD Card. Replace the SD Card & Battery then reboot your phone. With any luck it should be working again, did the trick for me
I tried that. It works for a day or two. And then again the same issue. Any long term solutions? I am planning to send a query to HTC support. Let me see what they say.
Same problem with Evo 4G
I have an Evo 4G (from GoogleIO) and have been having the same issue. A reboot fixes it temporarily but it comes back in a day or two. Hoping HTC gives you some ideas.
It has happened to me , remove Ebuddy or any msn messenger and probably you'll be fine.
I used to get this occasionally with the 4GB card that was included with my Desire. Once I bought a new MicroSD card it stopped happening.
Same problem with Eris. I unmounted, now just formatted and still cannot take a photo. Argh
HTC aria sd card insufficient file permissions
All I did to fix this issue was reformat the SD card. In windows, go to computer management, disk management, right click on the SD card, it might be labeled as F: or E: drive, click format. I formatted mines as FAT. All done, I was now able to save pictures, and videos to my phone's SD.

If you format the fat32 and you have ext3, and it keeps happening, you'll need to remove the ext3 partition, format in fat32 the whole card. This will solve your problem permanently
Hi, I have an HTC HD2 which I recently upgraded it rom ver. 1.66.415.9. I used spb backup to get my main memory files. Somehow, in a way, I was able to get all of my files anfd programs with windows settings and registry using ROM upgrade mode without changing the rom version back to the old one. But the then when I took pictures then tried to open them in albums, they weren't saved. A probition sign (circle-backslash "no" sign) showed up. I tried to open it but an error shows up saying "unable to open this type of jpg file" and then the sign diappears, as if the image wasn't saved. I even tried saving a note file. After saving, I opened it but instead of showing the notes I wrote, symbol characters showed up as if the file was encrypted. After rebooting my mobile, the note file wasn't there. I still have enough storage space to save more files and pictures. Did anybody face the same problem that I did? Please help me and thank you in advance.

If you are on Windows machine, connect your HD2 via usb and mount your SD card. In Windows go to System Tools and Drive Manager. You should see your drive mounted as a removeable hard drive. It should be about the same size as your SD card- a 4GB card will show up as 3.7 gigs or so, a 16GB. as 15 gigs, etc.
Click on that drive and on the right side window it will tell you what kind of partition it is formatted with. You can also right-click on it to reformat it.
JUST MAKE SURE YOU ARE NOT ACCIDENTALLY FORMTTING AN EXTERNAL USB DRIVE OR HARD DRIVE

had the same problem and reboot fixed it. i thought you had to have the ext partition to do apps to sd on some of the roms. i use extended batteries and like my synister rom alot so i'd rather restart my phone occasionally to fix the issue. Usually i power down and pop in the fresh battery before heading out the door so it took a long time to notice the problem. Otherwise i'm too much of a noob to be much help but really is restarting your phone occasionally a huge deal.

[Q] How Do I Remove An Ext3 Partition From My Sd Card?

I was using my 4gb sd card for apps to sd for my previously-rooted android phone, and had about a 500mb of it partitioned to ext3. I have since unrooted my android phone and put it back to stock, but in doing so, I lost the recovery console that would allow me to unpartition my sd card. Is there a safe program that will recognize the ext3 partition and remove it?
Gparted. You can use a live cd or a VM.
Hi there. I downloaded a free program call minitool partition wizard. Do a google search for it (I can't post links)
It has worked well for me with my SD card partitioning.
Make sure you back up the contents of your SD card before removing the ext 3 partition as it will delete all the contents on it.
could you please elaborate a little as i am a noob. like whats gparted? whats a vm? whats the process of doing what i asked? thanks for the help.
I don't know if Windows recognises it at all but worth a try really. Gparted is a live cd tool that allows you make partitons on a storage device. I think that VM refers to a Virtual Machine, using something like VMWare or VirtualBox.
guys please help. i used these softwares but none of these is showing my ext3 partition in the program window. just a 3.22gb of one partition on phone. the 512mb of ext3 partion is still missing and i dont know where to find it.
Well, since you really don't need the ext3 partition anymore, you could format the whole SD card from windows (do a back-up of the content on the hdd before, though). Then in Windows (I'm guessing you're using windows ), with the phone connected in mass storage mode, right click on My Computer / Manage / click on Disk Management and you should see in the list of the drives your SD card (pay attention to the size). Right click on the 512 MB partition - Delete volume... After that you should create a new partiotion, format it as FAT32... Or you could delete all the partitions of the card and create a new volume.

i did that. in disk management i only see a 3.22gb partition. (i have a 4gb card, so i 512mb is still missing). i cannot find the 512mb ext3 partition anywhere. please can someone help me to find a software or any other method which will be able to detect the ext3 partition as well ?
The partition may be corrupted. You can still try to use Gparted live cd - google for gparted-live-0.7.1-5.zip . It can also be installed on USB flash, check their site for instructions. Restart your PC and boot from the CD or USB flash then check your sd card. If it still doesn't recognize the 512 partition, you might be out of luck.

how could the partition be corrupted because i was using the ext3 partition to install apps when i had root. it was only recently that i have to sell out my htc desire and i unrooted my htc desire. unroot procedure was done successfully but the card is only showing 3.22gb, i-e, 512mb is missing. this may become an issue if the buyer does not want to pay for a 4gb card with only 3.22gb of storage. it should be around 3.5-3.6gb
A partition may become corrupted if you remove the battery from the phone while the system is still running (i.e. writing data on the partition), it is not unheard of. Do try the gparted solution mentioned before, though.

yes buddy i have tried the gparted solution you suggested before. even that is showing only 3.22gb of my sdcard and no mention of the 512mb ext3 partition. i dont know whether i am doing something wrong or what.... ???
Anyway, is there anyway i could recover that corrupt partition? Like can i ROOT my htc desire again and then try to format the ext3 partition from the recovery? i read somewhere there is a way to do that in recovery by giving some commands. and once i have recovered the ext3 partition space then i can UNROOT my htc desire again. DO YOU THINK IF I DO THIS ITS GONNA BE OF ANY USE? Please help me.
This might work since it worked for me. 4GB mysteriously disappeared from my 16GB card and neither Windows or gparted picked it up. The only way I was able to get it back was putting it in my phone and the Android picked it up. I did have to format my whole SD card but nontheless, I got all my space back. Hope this helps and if you have tried this then I can only guess that your SD card is buggered.

ok tell me if i root my cellphone again, will it help?
because there is a way to delete the ext3 partition from the recovery.
finally recovered my ext3 partition.
this is what i did.
1) rooted my phone.
2) enter into clockworkmod recovery
3) mount sd-ext (i guess it wasnt mounted that's why no app was recognizing it)
4) now windows was able to recognize the ext3 partition.
5) problem solved.

Use a card reader and MiniTool Partition Wizard.
Delete all partitions on the SD card and create a new one that fills the entire SD

[Q] SD Card not being read, can't go into clockwork

Hi all,
So I woke up this morning with my phone displaying a notification that my sd card is blank. I've had data2ext installed for about a month now on every other cm7 nightly, the latest being #108. I tried to mount the sd card, only to see the same notification. I've tried rebooting, battery pull, booting without the sd card then inserting it and nothing has changed. I went as far as trying to install the htc 2.2 update... and it failed since I'm not on an htc rom. The weird thing is my "about phone" section still shows 244 mb available of 418 mb total, although this might just be the ram/rom, not data partition... So what can I do? I also tried rebooting into recovery through cm7's power off menu AND rom manager, only to be shown a phone with a red QUESTION mark instead of the triangle and exclamation point. When I tried formatting my sd card, i get a pop-up notice saying "SD card is currently being checked". Help me, xda community. You're my only hope.
I tend to be the guy who asks the more obvious or I guess overlooked stuff... So I will!
Now to me(and I'm no expert here...) but it doesn't sound like a problem with the SD card(or maybe it is!). Have you tried a different SD card? Or using the SD card in a different device?
I didn't have a micro sd card adapter or any other micro sd to try at the time I wrote the OP so I didn't include that in there. I have an adapter now and the computer recognizes a drive there but it only shows the swap volume, I believe (it says I need to format the card, and when I try to it only shows it as being 30.6mb). When I try to format I get a "Windows was unable to complete the format" notification. So yeah, that's where I'm at.
try paragon partition manager, it usually gets the job done for me.
I'm trying to use partition manager, but I still only see 30 mb on the sd card. I'm not exactly sure how to just clear the whole thing of the ext partition and swap volume, though.
can your partition manager delete the swap partition?

Have you tried gparted? that's the only way I could really customize my sd card with the different kinds of partitions.
Partition manager hung while trying to delete the partition.
Gparted failed, I don't remember the exact message on that one.
I tried a different microsd card and it was recognized by the phone, so something weird must've happened to my original one. I guess a year's worth of use is all I can ask for with tech nowadays. Thanks for the help, guys.
Did you use gparted from a live cd, or on a computer actually running linux? I have had gparted live cd's fail me, and then turned right around and had success with gparted installed to ubuntu running on a win xp machine through wubi. Might be worth a shot for you, just make sure to unmount the card in gparted, and to actually make the changes before exiting, as that's an easy mistake to make

I used both, now. I had run redo backup software with gparted off my usb drive and then I installed xubuntu to dual boot my machine, and both only recognize 30 mb of the sd card's 8 gb, so it's only the swap space that was formatted for my data2ext. Thanks guys.

Damaged SD Card

Hello,
Yesterday while downloading stuff, my phone suddenly sent me a notification that my SD card is broken. I can access everything in Recovery somehow. What I've tried :
- un-mounting & mounting again
- re-flashing
- factory reset
- format in recovery
And everything that I listed above failed. When I plug my card into PC it doesn't open. My whole window is not responding. I've tried mounting it on my older phones (Nokia 2730 & LG KP500), and only Nokia readed my card, but I couldn't do anything because it was password protected. Every possible password I had for my old SD card wasn't the right one. I've already googled but nothing mentioned before helped. When I formatted in recovery it only froze. When I switched ROMs to more "original" one, when I plugged my SD card it was automatically removed. Also my SD card is EMTEC 16 gb Class 4, and just in case I have my old 1 gb sd card lying around.
There is a possibility that your SD card is damaged..........one way of trying to cure it is to somehow try to make it work on your computer and Format it............or just try to format it on the phones that it works on

Going to try format on my old Nokia. But I was thinking, if I can get my SD card to work in Recovery, isn't there anyway to connect my phone to my PC and then try to format?
EDIT: Tried formatting on Nokia 2730 - it was failure. I couldn't because of the password.

Internal Disk & MMC Gone !!

Firstly Happy New Year to all on the forum, my phone has just had a disaster can anyone help please.
My AT&T Glide crashed today in town, and on reboot I couldnt see the MMC 32gb card, which I thought had been corrupted. Well it was, when I put in another 16gb card the phone wont mount it, then I noticed that the internal usb disk isnt mounted either or even recognised ??
Hows this happened and can it be restored simply do I have to download a new dev rom and re flash from the 1.18gb I have left shown on phone as I cant put it to MMC card.
My phone has custom firmware Osimood.0122.RUXKJ5 which has been great up until this MMC sd card crash.
Any help gratefully received as its my work phone and I need it up and running asap.
Many thanks
Paul
Can you boot into cwm? I assume you have it installed. See if you can access the internal sd card from there. If yes then most probably a simple flash will fix everything, or even a nandroid backup assuming you have that as well. If no its not seen in CWM, then I do not know someone else will have to chime in, seems like something is very wrong for it to suddenly lose its memory. Could be some type of controller our buffer that went.
Sent from my SGH-I927 using xda app-developers app
Thank you for your reply, I went in to CWM and can see an update file on a the sd card so technically if I get the Osimood zip file I could reinstall the system but I am unsure which disk it is seeing this file from I dont think its the external MMC or internal USB so how to I get the file on a storage area that the phone can see.
On the phones settings, under storage pane, USB now has the option to Format USB storage, this has appeared since mounting the system files etc within CWM as most were set to unmounted, but it would not let me mount the sd card as far as I could tell from CWM, when I go to update system menu the option to install update.zip but which disk is this as I could not mount any disk from CWM to view mounted files such as directories etc.
I am in the process of recovering the MMC card that the phone crashed so not all is lost, but I am pretty sure there were files in the Glides USB storage that I would like to save if possible, if I format this storage I am unlikely to recover whats on it, but would a straight reinstall of Osimood format this disk anyway ?
One last question does anyone know what the option "download" is on the power off menu on Osimood it is along side recovery, reboot and power off etc.
ATB
Sorry one last thing I have noticed, when in storage settings SD card has the option to mount when selected it says preparing sd card but nothing actually happens the notice just goes and I'm back to square one, USB has no option in the menu to mount just to format.
I hope that the above is significant in what has happened here.
Thanks
Boot into CWM, enable "mount USB storage", then use a PC to check the internal storage for filesystem problems.
If that doesn't fix it, next step is to factory reset I'm afraid.
Hi everyone, thank you so much for all the assistance I have been at work and therefore forced to format the internal disk which once down the ext sd card became visible again ??? once reinstalling the apps again all is well again, my biggest issue is that all the sd card app back ups failed me as it wiped the ext sd card the internal was wiped on reformat so had to start again.
Note to self back up apks to computer is much safer the ext sd card.
Just hope it doesnt happen again the apk shopper was the culprit that crashed it all.
Many thanks brilliant forum.
