[Q] SD Card not being read, can't go into clockwork - myTouch 3G Slide Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
So I woke up this morning with my phone displaying a notification that my sd card is blank. I've had data2ext installed for about a month now on every other cm7 nightly, the latest being #108. I tried to mount the sd card, only to see the same notification. I've tried rebooting, battery pull, booting without the sd card then inserting it and nothing has changed. I went as far as trying to install the htc 2.2 update... and it failed since I'm not on an htc rom. The weird thing is my "about phone" section still shows 244 mb available of 418 mb total, although this might just be the ram/rom, not data partition... So what can I do? I also tried rebooting into recovery through cm7's power off menu AND rom manager, only to be shown a phone with a red QUESTION mark instead of the triangle and exclamation point. When I tried formatting my sd card, i get a pop-up notice saying "SD card is currently being checked". Help me, xda community. You're my only hope.

I tend to be the guy who asks the more obvious or I guess overlooked stuff... So I will!
Now to me(and I'm no expert here...) but it doesn't sound like a problem with the SD card(or maybe it is!). Have you tried a different SD card? Or using the SD card in a different device?

I didn't have a micro sd card adapter or any other micro sd to try at the time I wrote the OP so I didn't include that in there. I have an adapter now and the computer recognizes a drive there but it only shows the swap volume, I believe (it says I need to format the card, and when I try to it only shows it as being 30.6mb). When I try to format I get a "Windows was unable to complete the format" notification. So yeah, that's where I'm at.

try paragon partition manager, it usually gets the job done for me.

I'm trying to use partition manager, but I still only see 30 mb on the sd card. I'm not exactly sure how to just clear the whole thing of the ext partition and swap volume, though.

can your partition manager delete the swap partition?

Have you tried gparted? that's the only way I could really customize my sd card with the different kinds of partitions.

Partition manager hung while trying to delete the partition.
Gparted failed, I don't remember the exact message on that one.
I tried a different microsd card and it was recognized by the phone, so something weird must've happened to my original one. I guess a year's worth of use is all I can ask for with tech nowadays. Thanks for the help, guys.

Did you use gparted from a live cd, or on a computer actually running linux? I have had gparted live cd's fail me, and then turned right around and had success with gparted installed to ubuntu running on a win xp machine through wubi. Might be worth a shot for you, just make sure to unmount the card in gparted, and to actually make the changes before exiting, as that's an easy mistake to make

I used both, now. I had run redo backup software with gparted off my usb drive and then I installed xubuntu to dual boot my machine, and both only recognize 30 mb of the sd card's 8 gb, so it's only the swap space that was formatted for my data2ext. Thanks guys.

Cannot take pics :unable to save file to sd card due to insufficient file permissions

Hi geeks
Problem when i try to take pictures.
Does anybody have a fix for that issue "unable to save file to sd card due to insufficient file permissions".
Formatting SD or rebooting doesn't seems to fix the problem indefinitely.
error message come back after a little while.
I don't want to hard reset unless it really fix the problem!
Is it a defective sd or a bug or else ?
Many thanks
froggiedroid
HaHa, I have the same problem with taking Pics on my Desire too, I get "unable to save file to sd card due to insufficient file permissions"
I defragged my SD Card yesterday using Windows 7 defrag tool but I doubt it's damaged it long term. If I figure out a fix i'll let you know...
FIXED!
- Press Menu/Settings
- SD & Phone Storage
- Unmount SD Card
Turn off your phone then take out the SD Card. Replace the SD Card & Battery then reboot your phone. With any luck it should be working again, did the trick for me
I tried that. It works for a day or two. And then again the same issue. Any long term solutions? I am planning to send a query to HTC support. Let me see what they say.
Same problem with Evo 4G
I have an Evo 4G (from GoogleIO) and have been having the same issue. A reboot fixes it temporarily but it comes back in a day or two. Hoping HTC gives you some ideas.
It has happened to me , remove Ebuddy or any msn messenger and probably you'll be fine.
I used to get this occasionally with the 4GB card that was included with my Desire. Once I bought a new MicroSD card it stopped happening.
Same problem with Eris. I unmounted, now just formatted and still cannot take a photo. Argh
HTC aria sd card insufficient file permissions
All I did to fix this issue was reformat the SD card. In windows, go to computer management, disk management, right click on the SD card, it might be labeled as F: or E: drive, click format. I formatted mines as FAT. All done, I was now able to save pictures, and videos to my phone's SD.

If you format the fat32 and you have ext3, and it keeps happening, you'll need to remove the ext3 partition, format in fat32 the whole card. This will solve your problem permanently
Hi, I have an HTC HD2 which I recently upgraded it rom ver. 1.66.415.9. I used spb backup to get my main memory files. Somehow, in a way, I was able to get all of my files anfd programs with windows settings and registry using ROM upgrade mode without changing the rom version back to the old one. But the then when I took pictures then tried to open them in albums, they weren't saved. A probition sign (circle-backslash "no" sign) showed up. I tried to open it but an error shows up saying "unable to open this type of jpg file" and then the sign diappears, as if the image wasn't saved. I even tried saving a note file. After saving, I opened it but instead of showing the notes I wrote, symbol characters showed up as if the file was encrypted. After rebooting my mobile, the note file wasn't there. I still have enough storage space to save more files and pictures. Did anybody face the same problem that I did? Please help me and thank you in advance.

If you are on Windows machine, connect your HD2 via usb and mount your SD card. In Windows go to System Tools and Drive Manager. You should see your drive mounted as a removeable hard drive. It should be about the same size as your SD card- a 4GB card will show up as 3.7 gigs or so, a 16GB. as 15 gigs, etc.
Click on that drive and on the right side window it will tell you what kind of partition it is formatted with. You can also right-click on it to reformat it.
JUST MAKE SURE YOU ARE NOT ACCIDENTALLY FORMTTING AN EXTERNAL USB DRIVE OR HARD DRIVE

had the same problem and reboot fixed it. i thought you had to have the ext partition to do apps to sd on some of the roms. i use extended batteries and like my synister rom alot so i'd rather restart my phone occasionally to fix the issue. Usually i power down and pop in the fresh battery before heading out the door so it took a long time to notice the problem. Otherwise i'm too much of a noob to be much help but really is restarting your phone occasionally a huge deal.

Unmounting SD card when Apps2SD is used

Hi all,
My Desire is rooted and running Leedroid 2.2a with an ext3 partition on my SD card for my apps and cache folders, using the default apps2sd setup with the ROM.
I recently had to re-flash my phone because lots of installed apps went missing; some of them had odd names (the com.android.x.x names) and then it got stuck in a boot loop because it couldn't read the SD card until I formatted it, well actually I had to destroy the ext3 partition. Now I wonder if its because the apps folder is on the SD card/ext3 partition and if I connect the phone to my PC to copy stuff to/from in disk mode it un-mounts the SD card, losing the apps folder and the cache folder.
So far, since flashing, I haven't installed half as much crap on my phone, or dismounted the SD card, but I am worried that it will start to cause problems with the phone if I need to connect via USB/disk drive mode.
Has anyone else had these problems, or know of a 'safe' way to unmount the card without corrupting apps?

It shouldn't corrupt your EXT partition if you mount USB on your device.
AFAIK, if you mount USB, it will only mount the FAT32 partition, the EXT partition will still be available to Android.
Problem has occurred again. My battery went flat on Saturday so the phone turned off. Plugged it in on Saturday night, turned it on, and it stays at the "HTC" white background green text screen.
If I remove the card it boots fine. I mounted the SD card in Ubuntu and I can use the fat32 partition on the card, but the ext3 partition is empty, although if I right click on it and go to properties, it shows that there is 130mb in use on the partition. I cant do anything to the partition because Ubuntu throws some odd error about not being able to mount the partition because its in use, or some other paradoxical scenario...
Annoyed now. Anyone know of a fix? should I copy all the stuff I want off the card, repartition using gparted and try again? I used the ROM Manager app on the phone to prepare the card before. Could it have a bug?? the Ext3 partition is at the end of the drive space, after the fat32 partition. Should I make it the first partition?
Bit of a bump, but it seems I'm not the only one with this issue. Any help is appreciated...
I don't have the card with me now cos I'm at work so I cant do any more tests or try and find a solution.
Have you been able to find a resolution for this, I'm having this exact issue. While I suspect a reformat would address, I don't want to have to deal with this weekly.
No worries, you can mount them fine. but if you take out your sd card out of the phone and turn the phone on, it would turn on and go in a bootloop. but that was just for me.
This is used to happen to me. Stuck in HTC logo on white background. It turned out to be that my sd card was bad partitioned it corrupted.
I fixed it by destroyed all partitions and created only fat32. Then put it back to HTC Desire and had ROM Manager created new ext3 partition.

I have been facing this issue ever since I started trying a2sd+ roms. I created a 1GB ext3 and apps will start disappearing every now and then. If I shutdown the phone and boot it again, then many apps will go missing.
I tried reformatting the sd, wipe and reinstall the rom but no use. Apps will keep disappearing on every reboot. At times all the installed application will be corrupted. i.e they will be listed in application manager as com.android.xx.xx with no icon. Some apps will have the icon and if i select them it will say the application is no longer available.
I have tried different roms with a2sd+ and still have the issue
I have tried different methods of partitioning.. Using acronis disk director in windows, using rom manager, using ubuntu live cd etc.. still the issue is present.
What makes it difficult is that sometimes the ext3 partition gets corrupted.. sometimes the whole sd ext3+fat32 gets corrupted, and I could not find what's wrong.
One final thing left to check is to try with a different sd card. If even that fails, then I have to go back to non-a2sd+ rom and live with low internal memory
Anyone faced this issue and found a solution, please share... I would be grateful...

[Q] TROUBLE: SD Card not partitioning with ROM Manager

Hi
I am having trouble with my SD Card on HTC Desire. The whole problem started this morning, so let me walk you through the whole thing:
I installed CM7 nightly # 24 last night. My phone was working absolutely fine before that. It was late so I just set ROM Manager to make a backup and install the new ROM, and went to bed. When I woke up, it had installed and was working fine. Then I dunno for what reason I had to restart my phone. And when I did, all hell broke loose!
The phone rebooted and gave the error message that there is a blank memory card in the phone!!! I restarted the phone a few more times, took out the card and cleaned it, everything, but it just won't recognize it. I went into recovery and mounted the SD card to connect to computer. But the windows (win7 x64) gave error message that the card has an unrecognized or corrupted file system. Since the only backup I had was on SD card itself, I realized that I was officially screwed.
So I formatted the card in the windows. And now it was showing the full 7.37GB size of the card. Meaning it had also somehow removed the 512MB sd-ext partition I had on it as well. But I said fine, no issues. I can reinstall all the apps and settings etc.
So I installed the CM7 RC2 just to be safe, and went into ROM Manager to make the ext partition. I set it to 512MB, swap size 0MB, and the phone restarted into recovery. It started the partition, but only after 3 or so seconds, it rebooted. I checked, but it hadn't partitioned the card! Weird...
I figured maybe there is a problem with the format Windows did, so I formatted the card once again from recovery. Just to be safe, I wiped everything and reinstalled CM7 RC2. But again, no luck with partitioning. Installed Nightly # 23 to get the latest patches and all, but again no luck.
Now I made a GParted USB boot drive, and tried partitioning with it. But GParted also wont partition it. There was this attention symbol next to the drive. I double clicked the drive and it showed this error in the next window. I took a picture of it from a friend's phone, attached below.
I also took a snapshot from within gparted, but it saved it at some /home/something location and I cannot find it. So if the attached image is not clear enough, or if you know where to look for that snapshot, please let me know and I'll post that. Its not in the boot USB drive or SD Card, and its not in my C: drive either.
I would really appreciate if someone could tell me what the hell is going on with my SD card, and how to fix it. Its a Class 2 card, about 6 months old, and I really hope it isn't dead.
Seriously? No one??
Use the recovery and not Rom Manager or use Gparted of something like Easeus.
I use partition wizard on the computer for partitioning

[Q] My 16gb card shows as 1gb after a crash in a middle of partitioning with gparted

Hello,
My rom(iNsertCoin) has crashed today for an unknown reason, and entered nonstop bootloops.
I have tried to reflash the iNsertcoin zip but it didnt work for some reason, also it told me it cant mount the sd-ext (I am using ra-desire 2.0.0).
I have turned the phone off, and when I returned home I put my A-Data 16gb Class 10 Microsd (which was bought from newegg, so it cant be fake) in my card reader, and I started to partition the card like this: 1gb ext4, 300mb ext4, 100mb linux-swap, rest to fat32.
all of a sudden the program just crashed and from that point it tells me the card has 1gb unallocated space, in windows 7 it keeps asking me to format the card but it never succeeds, and it says the card uses raw file system.
I have tried chkdsk, and it told me its not available for raw filesystems.
I have also tried a number of programs, the HP partition tool, SDFormatter, nothing really helped.
Also, I tried using diskpart -> clean all command on the card but it keeps giving me weird error messages but usually it tells me its not ready, and it looks like the card is not responsive, although the pc recongized it.
I have tried doing this from a number of computers, another W7 computer and a XP computer. nothing worked.
I cant allocate space in gparted, and it tells me to create a partition table, and when I try that, the program just hangs.
Oh yeah, and I tried to put the microsd card into an adapter and put it in my dad's dslr and tried to format it, but there was an error.
Have I killed my microsd card? :/
Are you using gparted through an ubuntu livecd? Maybe try using the disk utility (system > administration > disk utility) to format the card with a new MBR scheme.
I am having the exact problem. Have you come up with any solutions?

Well, no.
I have sent the card to a-data for repair service and they have sent me a new card.
Anyway, slow speeds in almost any data2sd / data2ext roms still occur, so last week i have given up and got me an iPhone 4 from my carrier.

[Q] SD Card Partition HTC EVO

Hey all, I followed the steps to partition my SD card in prepreation for Virus's hotness being dropped soon. It seemed straight forward enough, however...
This is the part that got me.
"7- Select upgrade ext2 to ext3
8-Now go back and mount your sdcard"
I didn't see a promt asking to select upgrade, nor did I see one tinkering around. I did select mount SD-Card... I assume it worked, but a strange thing... it didn't erase any of my data.
Is there a way I can tell if the card is indeed partationed for 2 gigs just to be sure it went through correctly?
If you're using amon RA v2.3, go to partition SD card and then select SD: ext2 to ext3. As for checking the card's info, if you have a Mac, you can start the Disk Utility program and then select (highlight) the name of your SD card and then select "info" at the top of the screen.
Load your phone as disk drive. The amount you used should be taken from the regular size of the sd card. So if you have 8, it should say 6 if you made a 2gb partition.
I didnt get it first time reading it either. . .
I partitioned the sizes as stated then once done changed to ext3 and then rebooted the phone and moved my data back over to the card
What is the whole changes to ex3... I checkd the size of the card on my windows machine and it is indeed 2 gigs smaller.. I'm just concerned I may have missed a step. Thank you all again for taking the time to help a noob
