anyone know if the mt4g camera is better than ours? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i was wondering if the mytouch 4g and the g2 have the same camera or is their's better? i really dislike the slow shutter speed and low frames in video recording ours has.

My mother recently picked up a MT4G about a month ago, she doesn't let me **** with it too much when I visit but as far as I can tell, the specs on both phones are close to the same. I've ran stock benchmarks and always came out around the same results (quadrant was literally 11 points off from each other on the first try) I believe all the hardware is the same and as far as I can tell the camera is the same quality. Sadly the front facing camera quality is a horrible 1.3 megapixels.

I have had a MT4G and currently have a G2 I think that the G2 takes better pictures. But, that is just my opinion.

can G2 camera be as good as vibrant? is it possible?? can any programmer tackle this?
How about elaborating? You might as well have asked if monday can be as cool as tuesday.
He's probably refering to how the vibrant has superior picture and recording quality. Not sure how much you could improve g2 camera it would be like trying to force g2 speaker to be as loud as the vibrant's

whatta bout Cyber Monday...
honestly though guys, can we make the camera a little better?? i see the nexus one guys came up with the 720p 30fps for their phone, why cant we??
or the fact that our phone takes way too long to decode colors/contrast
Is your recording at such a quality that it's absolutely poor to watch? Are there too frequent frame skips? I'm not sure what FPS the video on the G2 is shooting at, but I think it's smooth enough. If it was 24 or 30, it doesn't matter. We get 720p on our recordings and there's no frame skip. Honestly, 24 vs 30, there's no difference. Either you have super-human eyes or your device is defective.

[Q] Poor "HD Quality" Video Recording

I gave up searching since I am apparently not "Human" enough to enter the Captca words correctly. (Whoever came up with that crap must be related to the guy who invented plastic theft proof packaging).
I shot a 3 minute video the other day, indoors but in daylight, with the settings at 720P and Mpeg4, using my rooted stock ROM EVO. The video is grainy, obviously not 30fps (more like 15fps), and as I pan, the image gets VERY blurry.
This is not HD video, I don't care what they say. I don't think it's the fault of my memory chip because the video looks like this during recording, not just during playback. It's obviously the fault of the camera chip.
I realize this is supposed to be a phone first, but smart phones are becoming indispensable computers/cameras/communication devices, and last I checked communication included video.
I will say this, my next smart phone must have true HD recording capabilities! Sprint lets me upgrade every year so they have another 7 months to get this right.
Is this a known issue with the EVO?
From what I hear it is due to the way the file has to be compressed that causes the poor quality.

Yeah. Not sure if there are different codecs that you can use. I think I read somewhere that Gingerbread will include a new codec by Google that is optimized for Android devices but not sure. Look around in Android Development or do a Google search
I'd love to see what the iPhone 4 can do, though I'd never buy one. Tomorrow I'll check out my mom's Epic and brothers MyTouch 4G.
For now: Fail!!!

Do a search, there's a huge thread on HQ HD recording. It's mainly due to over compression.
I believe I started out by saying I gave up trying to searching due to my "captca" issues. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow.
Compression problems typically show up as micro boxes, the picture breaks up into very tiny boxes. While the phone does have this issue, that's not what I was talking about.
When panning the camera, the picture gets blurry and smears, until the camera comes to a stop again.
I tried out my brothers MyTouch 4G today. HTC seems to have improved the video recording capabilities. Much less smear when panning. The video (at 720P) is much sharper as well.

HTC & Apple both source from the same mfg'er for their cameras...FYI.
That may be. I have not seen any "HD" video recorded from an iPhone 4 yet. I would find it hard to believe that Steve would accept the artifacts I'm seeing in my EVO's "HD" recordings, but who knows.
And the iPhone 4 uses a 5 MP camera, as opposed to the EVO's 8 MP chip.
In fact, just because they buy from the same source does not mean they're buying the same components. For all I know, the MyTouch 4G uses the same chip as well, yet it exhibits much less smearing.
Galaxy S Line HD Recording pretty good. Bout the same as iphone 4. both have 5 mp cameras too.
Yeah. I tested my moms Samsung Epic today and it's "HD" video was passable. Practically no image lag. I hope HTC makes an EVO 2!

[Q] After lack of Galaxy Nexus, better to get the SGSII?

So, after being a bit disappointed by the recent announcement (and 5MP camera) I think I will just sell my Nexus S and get an international SGSII. Better camera and available now, and will have ICS ROMs soon.
Anyone else feel the same way?
Nope sorry still rather have Nexus but to each their own.

not for me , as matter of fact , Pixel is NOT most important characteristic to the camera , have you seen a video that compares iPhone 4S and Galaxy Nexus of shutter speed?
http://v.youku.com/v_showMini/id_XMzE0MTgyNjc2_ft_6.html
look at shutter speed , Galaxy Nexus took 6 pictures while 4S just took 3 ...
shutter speed, imaging ...etc are also important
otheriwse , for exmple 15 MP with dozen seconds of shutter or 5 MP with half second of shutter, which one do you choose?
beside , i don't think human eyes can see much different between image made by 5MP or 8MP
if you really like to take picture , then why don't you buy a professional camera?
Folks, I get the megapixel race isn't the end all.
I'll probably wait on the Galaxy Nexus but I wanted to get your thoughts.
And I have a DSLR, but have trouble fitting it in my pocket. So, I want the best possible camera on a phone for when I am out and about and not wanting to lug a huge beast of a camera with me.
Nexus alllllllllllll the way. U kidding me! Lol galaxy nexus awesome. And I have the sgs2 international. Would dump it in a sec for a nexus

Well, judging from the blurry grainy shots on Engadget and thisismynext.com, color me not impressed by the Galaxy Nexus' camera.
I mean, yeah, the camera has zero lag and takes turrrbo photos, but if they all look grainy/out of focus/blurry, I care not.
Just IMO, per usual internet rules.

MP count doesn't equate to image quality.
my old nikon d40 DSLR only have 6mp but of course it took much better pictures than any mobile phone cameras on the market.
the image sensor size, engine and lens/optics are what matters most.
My gf has a S2, sure its nice, but the touchwiz interface is meh... and for its size, the screen is really lacking the extra resolution of the new Nexus. Remember the S2 came out many months ago already, it's new in the USA but not really latest tech.
A great phone though, im not trying to give it a bad rep, just saying new Nexus really is the new tech.

for example
nexus one camera and nexus s camera have same MP count.
but nexus s camera output is much better than nexus one's.
i have both phones so i know how frustrated i am with nexus one's camera.
So how does everyone defend the poor sample photos from the Galaxy.
Serious question....

Engadget and this is my next are very iPhone centric fanboy sites. I'm waiting for tests done by someone that knows what they are doing and not trying to make it look bad. Not saying that was done here but apparently Engadget screwed up pictures from the Nokia phone twice. Once in comparison with the iPhone 4 and then most recently with the iPhone 4s test. Given that, someone there doesn't know how to use a phone that isn't Apple made. Take those photos with a grain of salt.

I went from Nexus S to the Galaxy SII and I wish I could go back. Sure, it has a better screen and camera but the software is buggy and bloated. I tried to put on cyanogen but that one still has a lot of bugs as well. My Nexus S was rock solid.
I will definitely be trading in my SII for the new Nexus.
I am not a camera person myself and I really don't a **** about them to be honest. They have reached the point where they are acceptable to me on a smartphone.
Now that that's out of the way. On to engaget and basically all the other mobile sites. They all suck and are complelely useless in everything they cover. Apple/android/windows it don't matter really. They are just flat out terrible. The camera may be ****. It may be really good. But ihmo to come to a conclusion based on those idiots is foolish.
If you want a real rundown of a device wait for anandech to cover it.
I LOL @ people that don't choose a phone because it only has a 5MP camera compared to 8MP on other phones.

Anyways if I want to actually take high quality pictures, I'll use my Nikon. It's a phone, not a DSLR camera.

no, but it means more cropping options. probably also better photoshopping options.
the only thing worse then people thinking mpx is everything is people screaming they're nothing. i'd kill for another 6 on my 12mpx Nikon just for cropping. much cheaper then a tele lens i generally don't need and can't afford even if i needed it.
ontopic - i like official updates, so Nexus beats Galaxy S any day. Size and price will be key, camera is irrelevant.

[Q]Should I upgrade or wait?

Hey guys. I bring greetings from the vibrant forums. I was wanting some opinions from s2 owners. Currently I have a vibrant and I'm very familiar with some of the devs here. I have an upgrade available to me. My question is, is this phone worth an upgrade.? Of course I'd root and install a new rom. So with the new rooms, how's the overall performance of the phone? Smoothness and speed? I'm not that worried about benchmark scores. Or would you guys suggest holding off til next year and wait for the next big thing? Thanks.
It's dual 1.5Ghz, what do you think it'll feel like? A droid Eris?
Upgrade, because there's always going to be something new and you'll just post this question 6 months from now

Galaxy S II vs Galaxy S (Vibrant)
4.52 inch screen vs 4 inch
Super Amoled + vs Super Amoled
1.5ghz dual core vs 1ghz single
8mp camera vs 5 MP (no flash)
1080p video recording vs 720p
2mp front camera vs ............
4g data speeds vs 3g speeds
NFC vs .............
1850 mah battery vs 1500 (I think)
Dual mic vs single (I think)
Louder speaker vs loud speaker
Excellent GPS vs ...........
The Galaxy S II is definitely worth the upgrade over the Vibrant. The only part where the Vibrant shine is that it has excellent development compared to the GSII and that is mainly because the GSII is a newer device.
I've owned 2 Vibrants in the past and I can honestly say that after owning the GSII I do not miss the Vibrant not even for a second although it was a great phone at the time minus the GPS issues and lack of a camera flash.

*chuckle* ask a question in this forum and your ensured to get at least one honest answer and at least one smart assed answer.
I also came from the Vibrant and within minutes of using the SGSII felt that it is the phone that Samnsung should have made the Vibrant be. The SGSII is much snappier, the GPS works reliably and the screen is just enough bigger that I don't mind using it to do some light web surfing.
Am sure there are some issues (there's a long thread on how bad the screen sucks but I really don't find that issue very noticeable on mine) and there is Samsung/TMobile's history of not being very quick to release updates (we're still waiting on the WiFi calling app which I believe was promised to be available at launch).
Bottom line - it's a hell of a phone and, imho, the best one available on TMobile. The only other phone I might choose over it is the Galaxy Nexus and I'm not going to jump ship to get one...
...whew. Now, go forth and by an SGSII, use it and if you like it, keep it. If not then take it back in the first 14 days and exchange it for something else

I think that was the joke they were making. Although I hate how that is always peoples' response. It's a legitimate question if you haven't been keeping up on what else is about to come out. Not that people knew it was going to happen, but a lot of us were upset when the SGS4g came out right after the Vibrant, when it was announced if someone asked if they should get the phone I think most would agree to hold off.
However in this case I doubt we will see a SGS3 for close to a year since it hasn't been released over seas yet and then we get to wait another 6 months before they finally grace us with it. I am currently trying to talk myself out of waiting or ordering the GN from over seas.
Best Buy has it on sale for $149.99 no rebate!!!!
Very happy with this phone. i previously had a Samsung admire from metropcs which turned out to be totally inadequate .
The admire ran stock gingerbread with no touchwiz which was really its only nice feature. personally, i don't see why everyone complains about touchwiz.. There's no way it slows down the phone to a greater extent than HTC sense with all its bloated animations, and it does have a few useful tweaks.
Id suggest purchasing an sgs2.

Camera quality?

Hello!
I have a Sensation and had a sgs2 before, I wonder how does the Galaxy Nexus compare to them in both photo shots and video recording.
Do you think devs can emulate 8mp on the GN?
It's the only thing with the size of the phone that are stopping me of buying it
5 or 8 or 12 it doesn't really matter.
the camera quality of GN is really not so good (it is just OK but it could be better... more better) and it can't compete with sgs2 or iphone or other smartphones with nice camera but people bought GN not for camera, i think we all knew its quality from reviews.

Comparing the GN photos and video to those phones is sure to disappoint. The Sensation offers some of the best video quality I've seen on a phone and the SGS2 takes wonderful photos (and great video!).
If photos and video are important to you, stick with what you have or wait for new phones to be available in April. The Sensation should be getting ICS next month and that will make it a better device over the GN, in my opinion. It has better battery life, a better camera, performs better, etc.
What is your reason for wanting the GN?
Simply the HD screen
But only the white version
As a former SGS2 owner, I can say that in comparison the GN camera sucks. However, it's a great phone and the camera is on par with last year's cameraphones.
the bad quality mainly is from the super poor photo format compression
i wonder why there have not been any expert user modifying some codes for it
I had a nexus one and someone modified a set-profile file and the compression of the photos improved so much...
