I've been really interested in the development in the MIUI ROM for the Desire and have tried some of XavierJohn22's offerings. The progress seems excellent and I love the look of the UI, (despite it's obvious comparisons with iOS...) and the increases in performance / battery life compared to the stock ROM.
What I'm not sure of, (and I have trawled through the forums looking for the answers!) are the differences in both functionality and advancements in development, between the variants that are on offer - namely the MIUI AU version, MarkHUK's (miui-dev) and those by XJ.
To add to the confusion, what are the differences between the 3 versions XJ has compiled? (a2sd, x-part and d2w)
Are there any benefits that would favour one over the others?
What are the benefits in moving the caches onto the SD card apart from the obvious space gains on the phone?
Is there any loss of performance?
Also, I've read that performance can be greatly improved by flashing a Froyo kernel into the Gingerbread build (MIUI 1.4.1). Surely a downgrade of kernel would also downgrade the system back to Froyo?
I appreciate these may be very noobish type questions, but I really want to learn this!
If anyone can provide any answers I would be very grateful.
P.S. Before this thread gets removed again, would someone care to let me know the reasons for deletion?

These are just different build from different chefs, the main difference is that they make their rom the way they want them. Beside that one rom could use a newer version of miui then the other.

The only advantage is more space on your phone. There could be performance loss but that depends on your SDcard and some other factors. Stick with a2sd and then if you haven't got enough space (which I doubt) you could try some other versions.

A froyo kernel is for froyo and a gingerbread kernel for gingerbread. You don't use one with the other.
You can get improvements with different kernels but you just need to read and test for yourself. The main improvements could be better batterie life, but because it's depends a lot on the hardware of your phone, you should test this yourself.
Chances are it's cause you posted a question in the wrong forum, hence its movement

hi,
Been looking all over the development forum looking for a custom rom gingerbread for DHD. No idea which one is good, any suggestions? thanks in advance.
Hi,
"Good" is subjective. Some prefer slim ROMs with minimal installed apps, performance tweaks, and stripped down services. Some prefer proven and tested builds for utmost stability, sacrificing some neat new features others have access to. Some prefer full-fat ROMs with nifty apps, enhanced UI appearance, and a fully enabled device with maximum usability, sacrificing responsiveness.
Which ROM you think is "good" is for you alone to decide. Try one, if you don't like it, try another. If you can flash one, you can flash them all. Give them a go.
HTH.

As of now theres only 2 viable versions to consider, either CM7 Nightlys from Cyanogen Team: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=917271
or the CM7 Nightlys Modified with minor tweaks: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=918639
Both are still in development so no support yet, flash at own risk

a good rom for me is the one the will not crash and don't damage the phone by overclocking in summer time
After rooting my HTC Desire i thought i had done the hard bit.
After reading the mountains of info; about Roms I dont know if I am any wiser, confused maybe. As a Newby to this i have a great deal to learn, I am after some guidance with peoples reccomendations as to which ROM is best for me.
I think i want -Stability, more than anything as Much as the latest Android updates, thanks for any suggestions
If stability is priority fo you and you want bug-free ROMs, I'd reccomend to try Froyo ROMs. Gingerbread ROMs are stable, as well, but bugs occur in them - not big ones, but still.
And for the ROMs - Insertcoin HD/ RCMixHD / LeeDroid/ Starburst - take your pick, all good

CyanogenMod. I still run their RC3 and considering I've never had any issues large enough to complain about, I never bothered to upgrade to their current release
Thanks for the Quick reply, will take on board
Thanks for the quick reply, reads well
Honestly though, if you look at the desire forum, it gives you a good idea which ROMs have the most amount of issues. Although a lot are caused by noob errors
GB: InsertCoin / RCMix
Froyo: Leedroid
In the last few days I have tried all the major gb roms(rcm, insertcoin, reflex etc), all of them have been stable but not fast enough. I think that may be due to the fact that there is currently no stock rom for desire gb. I would recommend leedroid 2.4.1. Its very fast and stable. I will switched to a gb rom once the official software has been released.
Weheyyy! Hello to all you lovely helpers
I am very happily rooted, s-off partitioned etc etc and have lovely new Insertcoin ROM!!........but........have another question, I hope someone would be kind enough to answer please, which is:-
My phones battery seems to have become quite poor (was poorish anyway) but now a little worse and am thinking its because of all the lovely Insertoin bits on it. I am wondering, my battery version is 5.11.05.27, and thought if I updated it to the most recent version would there be an improvement??? Also, occasionally experiencing a few dropped calls.....
Any info at all very appreciated.
P.S. If I have incorrectly started a new thread, sorry but I did search and nothing else came up!!!
In my experience, no. Moving to a ROM like LeeDroid can make a massive difference. I personally love AcesMod for the full 'Sense HD' experience but the battery was bad and there were some FC's that I sufferred. Leedroid 3.3.3 doesn't give the full 'HD' experience but it's reliable and has exceptional battery life.

I have discarted your disclaimer and substituted it with my own: BravoS ROCKS, dudes!
Stable signal - means better battery life.
It can't hurt to change your radio to the most recent one to see if this will help out your battery life. I'm sure you already have but also look at your sync frequencies on things like email and weather as they can eat into your battery.
From what I've read, the sense based rom's will always eat a lot battery because there's so many processes going on in them all the time. For best battery life switch to an aosp rom.
If you want to flash the newest radio look here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=687464&highlight=radio
to get the newest one (5.17.05.23).
Then go here and get this...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794638&highlight=radio
which is a flash utility to use on your pc/laptop. Seems a lot of people use it to flash stuff onto their Desire (useful for flashing a new splash screen as well). I used it to flash my radio and all went smoothly.
If you need any more help just ask
Hey guys,
Just wondering what the state of custom roms are for the OneV.
Usually I just try a few out and get to know who the best devs are in the community are, and fiddle a lot, but this isn't for me.
I'm looking to help out someone with a stock one v where its terribly slow, freezing for long periods etc, and it seems to be that the Dalvik Cache is struggling with its tiny internal storage to work with.
So just wondering if anyone can give some suggestions as to which ROMs are the best for stability, speed, battery life, and fully working.
This person just needs to have their phone actually be usable as a phone is the main thing. My usual go to is official CM or a well known dev.
Preference to well made, clean, and well maintained roms, can be sense or AOSP, personally i prefer AOSP but am wary of driver, battery life and stability issues.
Seeing a lot of discontinued roms, and a lot of hacked together ports as well, so hence asking.
Cheers.
most stable working ROM

its a sense ROM
no problems whatsoever with it
best thing, everything worx
battery life is very close to stock which is superb
This is what i want to hear. Many thanks!
Whats the internal memory on this like after install, reasonable amount?
Anything else worth considering? It sounds like AOSP projects at the moment have a hiccup with the camera, which is unfortunate, so it seems sticking with sense is the way to go.

There was a really stable AOSP ROM slim Bean but the maker has removed it(its a shame)
Dont ask why coz ull start another war
You can try pa2.99 by icebox. Everything works. No bugs. Battery life idc but its good

First, questions are supposed to go to the Q&A forum. Second, these types of threads are known to lead to colorful discussions, shall we say, between supporters of different ROMs. You will get different answers from everyone anyways as no one uses their phones in exactly the same way.
So that adds up to thread closed.
Thank you,

Hello guys, i have ordered one of these babies and being this my first HTC i was wondering if is there any trade off on moving from stock to a custom firmware?
is some other phones you have to sacrifice camera quality, or some sensor, or any specialized driver for the pleasure of having a custom rom
thanks!
Please do your research instead of opening a useless thread. Search through custom roms/ read there description and changelogs, that will give you a fair idea what the differences are regarding stock and custom.
It's an individual preference therefore no one can choose for you. Best bet is to read about the custom roms that are available, also read users comments to further indicate any known bugs.
I am using viperone 3.0 in my opinion and my own preference I think this is the best Rom in the m8 forums.
Obviously stock is standard but custom roms offer a variety of tweaks, customisation and user custom choices .
Reading will set you free...
There isn't really a plethora of custom roms available. The ones that are available are pretty popular, fast and some nice features but there's something always broken or not as stable as stock in my opinion.
HTC One M8
Don't get me wrong, i never asked which rom is better, i did read and understand the forum rules.
But for example, im comming from a samsung s3, where it is a known fact that any aosp roms have worse camera than touchwiz ones. It does not mean that aosp roms are worse, it is just a trade off.
I will be trying roms, i was just wonderig if there are general, well known trade off

Nope. There is no general blanket statement that can be made about this. There are a variety of ROMs, and ROM types (Sense, GPE, AOSP). In particular, the Sense ROMs are based on stock, but optimized. Therefore, there are often no "tradeoffs", just added features and better performance. Even with GPE and AOSP, it depends on what ROM you are looking at and your personal preferences. So I agree with Post #2 that you just need to read through the ROMs and decide for yourself what the pros and cons are.

If you expect to use the HTC apps like the camera software, you need to be on sense I'm pretty sure, so that might be considered a trade-off.

Some HTC apps work on GPE (but not AOSP). So again, it goes back to the OP reading about what works and what doesn't, versus their own personal wants and preferences. Its difficult to just say there are any blanket trade-offs.
At the very least, the OP has to be more specific in what type of ROM they are looking at (Sense, GPE, AOSP) and why (what features they like and want, and what they need). Otherwise, the question is just to vague.
