odin - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

how long should odin take when repartition is checked? i've tried several time to to odin different .tars but all of them failed during write operation...i cant boot up my phone...all i see is a pic of a phone and a pc with yellow triangle in the middle...i can charge and go to download mode...but thats about it...am i fcked???!!!

Your not effed. Go to the wiki follow directions there for odin. The only time you need re partition checked is if your are doing ext4 and even then I don't think it matters if you check it. Should only take 1-2 minutes

[Q] Help I think I bricked my phone!

My phone was constantly rebooting so i went into CWM and did a factory reset and it froze while wiping and since then it wouldnt reboot. I went to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1551901&page=11 and followed the directions for the one click recovery using odin 1.81 but it stopped updating on the data.img. I kept it connected for over an hour. I disconnected the cable and rebooted the phone. now when i turn it on it says "firmware upgrade encountered an issue please select recovery mode in kies and try again" i tried holding power and volume down and it briefly boots up but then goes to the firmware upgrade screen. Kies isnt recognizing the phone as being connected. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
you are not the first one today (yesterday) reporting the same problem. There were about 3~4 incidents reported during today. So, don't go further at this time. I hope some more Devs joining to give more helps.
During the time you are waiting, read the almost same case -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1554392
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1549382
Also, please describe the full details about what you did and how you did -
where did not download the rom, what's your rom/kernel version before installing the rom, how did you proceed to odin the rom, etc...
You mentioned that you tried to flash the rom using the one click recovery using odin 1.81. Can you please be more details about this?
Before flashing the rom, you said that your phone was constantly rebooting. What was your rom and kernel at that time? Do you think there was anything suspicious causing the rebooting?
Maybe the solution would be simple but I saw many people reported same thing, there would be common issue in here. So, we need to find out what that is....
Sorry for not giving you the suggestion at this time.
This isn't an ODIN issue. ODIN is just the messenger in this case.
There is a problem between the ICS kernels and custom recovery where it will sometimes corrupt your /data partition if you reset/wipe/restore/format/etc. Any large partition operations are suspect. Copying files seems fine. It doesn't necessarily do it every time so it'll work for some but brick others. Even if it works a couple of times, it can brick at any time.
The EMMC memory actually becomes damaged and even JTAG repair will not fix. By the time you get to ODIN the damage is already done. ODIN won't be able to write to /data even using a .pit file with repartition set, ODIN one-click won't write to it, CWM will hang writing to it, JTAG will have issues also.
Your best bet is to get a replacement.
There are multiple threads about this, which is why people suggest you go back to a GB-based kernel+CWM to do your ROM flashing.
This is one thread where the data.img corruption is discussed:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1504808

Maybe try using odin to flash a kernel with recovery, and get into recovery before it reboots(or pull battery since it won't boot after odin is done doing its thing). then restore a nandroid, or flash a Rom?

I think we are in synch - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1556609 (the suggestion that I provided).
Adding to this, I personally recommend to format the sdcard before installing anythig - there's a option to format sdcard.

GNex Bricked - Tried Fastboot/ODIN/OMAP

I am pretty new to flashing and rooting android phones. I have a GNex 4.1.1 JB Stock ROM. It was stuck in a boot loop somehow and I wasn't able to fix it by factory reset. Someone told me to unlock and root the phone to install a new stock ROM.
I unlocked using the Wuz toolkit. But rooting wasnt possible because I couldnt push files through ADB. Then I tried doing an ODIN flash using this method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1827685). But I got stuck at NAND Write Start.
Now I have a Phone <-> Yellow Triangle with Exclamation <-> Computer. Which I believe is download mode for Samsung.
Then I tried an OMAP Flash using this method (http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/archive/t-1465412.html). I was successful installing the OMAP drivers and running the bat file. However I am still have the phone/yellow/triangle/Computer logo on my screen.
I tried to do an ODIN flash again but still stuck at NAND Write Start.
I already tried to do this:
1.) Repartiion using the PIT file [ODIN]
2.) Then OMAP flash
3.) Then Flash PDA file using ODIN.
I also tried it by swapping steps 1 & 2 but no progress. Can someone tell me the exact sequence of steps or any advice what to do now?
First of all, let me list your mistakes before I help you out:
Mistake #1: You used a toolkit. By doing so, you skipped over the entire learning part of unlocking and flashing your device, so you have no idea what went wrong or what you did.
Mistake #2: You used Odin when you didn't have to. You can mess up your device with Odin, while it is next to impossible to do so using fastboot. We have a Nexus device, i.e. a device with an unlockable bootloader and the ability to use fastboot. In my opinion, Odin should only be used as a last resort.
Mistake #3: You did not read enough before you decided to fix your bootloop. There are a bunch of stickies in the General and Q&A sections. Did you read any of them?
Now, on to fixing your issue.
Go to the Dev section and find the IMM76D Odin file in a thread started by Chainfire.
Follow the instructions in that thread to flash the complete package. Odin should be able to flash your device even though you are on the screen you currently see. Do not use a JB Odin package, use an ICS package.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I read a few articles and i know it wasnt enough. I posted a thread on android central and a senior wrote down some steps and i followed that. But going for odin and omap was totally my experiment.
I links to the imm76d image do not work any more. File not found error. There were no other sources i could find. Do you have another link to the file?

I downloaded the image and tried an odin flash but seems to be stuck at nand write start. I also see that this process does not have a pit to repartition. I had previously tried to re partition it using the pit file given in the jb stock rom odin image. Can i use the same one here?

You shouldn't need the .pit file. That's what probably messed things up in the first place.
If Odin is not working, I guess you can try Omap flash and then Odin. Note that if you try omap flash, and then Odin still doesn't work, I don't think you have any other option besides sending it in for repair.

I tried the OMAP Flash. It executes perfectly in the command window but my phone still shows the "connect phone to PC" picture with yellow excalmation. After that I tried ODIN flash the IMM76D tar file but I am still stuck at NAND Write flash. What I want to know is that what are the reason for getting stuck at NAND write flash and what should have happened to my phone after OMAP Flash was complete?
Furthermore I was also thinking if using a USB jig would help me get back into fastboot.

After OMAP Flash, you should still see the "connect phone to PC" picture with yellow exclamation, but now Odin should have worked. Not sure why it gets stuck on NAND write flash. Maybe try un-checking the F. Reset Time option. Someone about a week ago said that it worked for him.

It's not a problem now and it won't be a problem when new firmware comes out either but if you want to flash
your phone back to stock so it will allow the Samsung OTA upgrade in your phone follow these steps carefully.
Here is the step by step guide:
After you have followed these instructions your phone will be in the same condition as it was the day you purchased it.
Download the stock T999 firmware: http://www.hotfile.com/dl/179444770/6dc329c/T999UVDLJA_T999TMBDLJA_TMB.zip.html
After downloading it make a folder on your desktop and unzip the file
using Winzip or 7zip so the .TAR file is in the new folder you just made.
Here is a link for ODIN which is required for flashing the stock rooted firmware (a windows app) http://d-h.st/Q14
Download and extract Odin into the same folder you made containing the TAR file.
Download the firmware of T999 Tmobile odin flash firmware
Run Odin by double clicking the Odin.exe within the same folder as the TAR file you extracted
Turn off your phone and boot into DOWNLOAD MODE (Volume Down + Home + Power Hold until phone powers up, then release and press Volume Up to enter Download Mode)
Once in Download Mode, connect the USB/Charger cable to the phone and plug into the USB port on your computer.
You should now see a COM** port listed toward the top-left of Odin (under ID:COM)
Click on the PDA button in the middle-right area of Odin.
Browse to and select the FW you downloaded (TAR file)
Make sure Auto-Reboot and F. Reset Time are the only options checked and that PDA is the only other thing checked.
TRIPLE CHECK your settings and that you have selected the correct firmware for your model phone and are using the correct options.
If you are using a laptop, make absolutely sure you are plugged in, or if on battery, that it is charged enough and will not go into sleep mode during flash.
Click Start to begin the flash. This will take a while, so be patient!
Once complete, in the top-left box in Odin, it will say PASS and the phone should have automatically rebooted.
You may unplug the phone and close Odin if you wish.
Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the system to boot the first time and then build its cache! (It may seem to hang during boot, this is normal and you must be patient!!!)
Good Luck!
Did you triangle away before going back to stock? That takes away how many times the phone has been modified and makes it normal.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Triangle away resets the flash counter, it doesn't remove modified status. After you Odin back to stock, you need to do a factory reset (sometimes 2) to change your status back to normal.

[Q] Bricked! What to do next?

I just bricked my Samsung Galaxy S2x (SGH-T989D). :crying:
I was trying to install the latest CWM recovery and Cyanogen ROMs. It all seemed to go smoothly, but then when I rebooted the phone it stuck on the Cyanogen animation - I left it for more that 15 minutes with no change. At that point I pulled the battery and restarted in recovery mode.
For some reason, the phone would freeze or reboot when I tried to clear the cache directory. The log showed errors that it couldn't access that cache directory either.
To make a long story short, I tried to use ODIN to reinstall the recovery and it crashed half way through. There was a Windows error that ODIN has stopped working and my only option was to close the app.I left the phone for a few minutes but nothing was happening, so I pulled the battery.
Needless to say, now I don't get any activity on the screen. ODIN doesn't see the phone. When I plug the USB cable I get a QHSUSB_DLOAD device under "Other devices".
I do have the Qualicomm QHUSB drivers and a copy of QPST (v 2.7.323 from 2008), but I doubt that will help me much.
What do I do next? Is there any way to fix this? It's a Koodo phone, but I doubt that they'll take it as a warranty repair/swap as it's been unlocked so I can use it on Rogers.
Thanks for ANY help at all! (Even name calling!)
Well if you got $50 bucks check out mobiletechvides
Is.com they will JTAG it for you for around 50 bucks which is ur only option at this point or send it in for a warranty swap out

I should have mentioned that I have three of these phones, so there are two I can use to get stock images from, if I can figure out how.
I have connectivity to the phone using QPST... (screen capture attached).
Does anyone know if it's possible to use QPST to capture an image from a good phone?
I've tried to connect to COM8 with PuTTY, but it is unable to open a connection.
Well you're just soft bricked because you didn't wipe system before flashing the new ROM
Easy fix
Odin back to stock ROM (there's a thread in the roll up stickies in dev section)
Odin flash a recovery
Go to goo.im and search under devs gir ericwill and find his openrecovery folder and download twrp 2.4 or just Google search "twrp Hercules 2.5 goo"
Flash it in cwm
Reboot back into recovery
Click wipe
Click advance wipe
Check first 4 options (dalvik, data, system, cache)
Swipe to wipe at the bottom
Now flash your ROM followed by gapps and reboot.

Is there anything else I can do to verify that the connection is going to work? Use a terminal on the COM port? ADB?

Did you try kies? Open kies on your computer and select "emergency firmware recovery“. It will ask you to enter your serial number (take off the back cover of the phone to see the serial number).
That should get you back to stock. Worked for me when I was having the same problem.
