My friend just recently bought himself an SIII and we were going to switch him to ST. His phone has some issues however. Apparently the guy he bought it off of showed him it worked fine. The wi-fi and everything worked. But now we try messing with it and every time we try to open up settings menu "unfortunately TouchWiz home has stopped working".
Not only that. We can not move apps/widgets nore turn on wifi.
Running 4.1.1
Was suggested firmware reset.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks

A factory reset or firmware reset might be your solution here. Backup your stuff first though.

There's no need to root to use Odin.
Factory reset was tried already. Suggestions on how to firmware reset?
Backing up the system seems pointless seeing as he has nothing on the phone from just having bought it, unless there are other reasons for backing up I don't know about.

if factory reset doesn't work, try Odin and flash Stock Rom?
make sure you backup and save it on your Computer first though(if you're rooted)

here's a link to the stock firmware page. locate the correct carrier and download the version you wish. my wife's phone is running the "DLK3" version (jelly bean). the instructions are on the page. after downloading the files, installing the samsung drivers, and installing odin, i would:
1. boot into recovery (press home + vol up + pwr together. let go of the power button when the phone vibrates and displays blue text in the top left corner)
2. wipe data
3. wipe cache
4. reboot and power down
5. place phone into download mode (home + vol dwn + power). you should see a warning asking you to press volume up if you want to continue or volume down to cancel, press volume up.
6. connect phone to computer via usb and open odin
7. your ROM is a single .tar.md5 package so click on the PDA button and browse to the .tar or .tar.md5 file that you extracted
8. click start to flash. If odin hangs at setting up connection just unplug the USB cable and re-attach it, Odin should now resume
9. do not disconnect the cable or turn off the device once the flash has started, it will reboot when it finishes.
10. power down and boot into recovery again and wipe data and cache again. reboot and you're reset and good to go.

Find the one for you're friend, and download it. This will root you're phone and will not void you're warranty, and you're device will not show up as modified. This is the safest way to root you're phone and since this is a firmware it will replace you're old firmware. If flashing this doesn't work, then just wipe you're data. If none of these work then it's an application you're friend has downloaded, some of them could do that.

Dont forget to backup your imei once you are rooted. People have lost their imei by flashing ROMs and have to go through a list of steps in order to get it back. Just download this app and make a backup, if you ever lose your imei just open the app and restore your imei.

Easy and sure way to root your phone - Here is s step by step guide:
After you have followed these instructions your phone will be in the same condition
as it was the day you have purchased it except with the benefit of being rooted.
Download the stock-rooted Samsung Galaxy S3 Jellybean v4.1.1 T999 firmware: http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390169635556426451
After downloading make a folder on your computer's desktop and unzip the
file using Winzip or 7zip so the .TAR file is in the new folder you just made.
Download and extract Odin into the same folder you made containing the TAR file
Here is the link for Odin: http://d-h.st/Q14
Download ODIN which is required for flashing the stock rooted firmware (a windows app)
Download the Odin Flash firmware for T999 Tmobile then copy it to the same folder as Odin
Run Odin by double clicking the Odin.exe within the same folder as the TAR file you extracted
Turn off your phone and boot into DOWNLOAD MODE (Volume Down + Home + Power Hold until phone powers up, then release and press Volume Up to enter Download Mode)
Once in Download Mode, connect the USB/Charger cable to the phone and plug into the USB port on your computer.
You should now see a COM** port listed toward the top-left of Odin (under ID:COM)
Click on the PDA button in the middle-right area of Odin.
Browse to and select the Firmware you downloaded (TAR file)
Make sure Auto-Reboot and F. Reset Time are the only options checked and that PDA is the only other thing checked.
TRIPLE CHECK your settings and that you have selected the correct firmware for your model phone and are using the correct options.
If you are using a laptop, make absolutely sure you are plugged in, or if on battery, that it is charged enough and will not go into sleep mode during flash.
Click Start to begin the flash. This will take a while, so be patient!
Once complete, in the top-left box in Odin, it will say PASS and the phone should have automatically rebooted.
You may unplug the phone and close Odin if you wish.
Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the system to boot the first time and then build its cache!
(It may seem to hang during boot, this is normal and you must be patient!!!)
Good Luck!

well on my gnex with vzw i got 20 hrs with 2hrs screen time on normal use so im expecting that to get better with the s3
Someone is asking to have their S3 for T-Mo rooted. I would like to load a ROM that has OTA Updater included and also as close to stock as possible. This person is much more of a N0ob than myself. The reason for OTA is to hopefully alleviate the problem of constantly downloading and flashing manually.
Thanks in advance.

Don't root it for them. Just my opinion. Because once you do, every problem they have becomes your problem.

I was thinking the same thing. That's the same exact reason why I haven't rooted my wife's Note 2. I was hoping since if there was a ROM supported by OTA, then I could be slightly idiot proof. Might be wishful thinking on my part.

It isn't cause those sometimes just give false updates which you hear about constantly and then if it does update but it has an issue its your issue and so on and so on. Its a vicious cycle. I walk my brother through it cause he's my bro and I got his back but my friends are dumb lol.

Here is the best way to have the latest and greatest stock pre-rooted samsung rom.
Yes you read right, this is stock and it's the pre-rooted Samsung Touchwiz Jellybean v4.1.2 firmware.

I got a Samsung S3 that is stuck on the installing adroid logo.
When i start the phone, the samsung logo shows up and after that i see a adroid logo installing something( see photo ), and at 24% the phone shuts down en start the same thing again.
I can't enter the hard-reset menu ( vol up + home button + power ).

Plug into computer to make sure you don't run out of battery. Then look into ODIN should be good after that.

Ok, first, if you want root, make sure you flash the root66 version of that firmware. The one h ou posted is not rooted.
Here is a step by step I posted a few days ago. Use whatever makes more sense to you, since mrjuncky also posted a similar one.
1. Download Odin 3.07 (Link in my sig)
2. Download latest firmware (root66).
3. Unzip Odin and the root66 firmware. (Use 7zip) (the firmware should have a .tar.md5 extension)
4. Run Odin (no need to install)
5. Boot the phone into Download mode.
6. Plug into the computer. In one of the top left boxes you should see it say COM: ##. If not, install the USB drivers from my sig and try again.
7. Once detected, click on PDA, then browse to the extracted firmware.
8. Verify ONLY F-Reset Time and Auto Reboot are checked.
9. Click Start
It may take up to 10 minutes, but the phone will automatically reboot and you will see Odin say PASS in the top left box. Unplug your phone and thats it!
Good Luck!

Maybe try flashing just TWRP or CWM and then see if itll boot to recovery after that. You can find them in my sig.

Nope, after +- 50 mins of waiting, ODIN said failed..
I dont know what the do. I didn't do nothing before the steps you gave me..
Is there something else i can do?
The next best thing I can think of is to try flashing TWRP/CWM with Odin.
Or you could try flashing with Mobile Odin. Search it here on xda, fantastic program!

If you cannot turn the phone on then mobile odin is useless to you until you can.
The important thing to know is whether you can get into "Download" mode.
See if you can get into "Download Mode" by follow these instructions:
1: Turn off your phone or remove the battery for 10 seconds and re-insert it.
2: Press and hold “Volume Down + Power + Home” buttons at the same time for a few seconds.
3: After you see the Samsung logo release the buttons.
4: Then you will see the Warning screen, Read the warning before going to proceed.
5: As the given on screen instruction, press Volume Up button to enter download mode.
6: There you will see the Android logo and text saying “Downloading, Do not turn off target”.
7: If you want to exit download mode, just press Volume Down button.
If you can get into download mode then you have nothing to worry about.
Be sure your battery is charged.
He can get download mode, but when flashing the stock firmware it freezes right after starting and after a long while will eventually fail.
@op, before trying to flash anything else, plug your phone in while off to make sure you have enough juice.

İm gonna charge the battery now.. And try the whole thing again..
But can i install a different rom? The official firmware or something?
Thnx
First, a HUGE thanks goes @garwynn for being my partner through all of this and then to @sfhub (for teaching me how to create Odin One-Click.exe files and creating the original thread I'm using as a template for this one), @agat63 (for helping me get the hang of what sfhub started teaching me), @MoHoGalore for helping test and put together so many of these one-clicks and to everyone else in our community who makes this possible!
This Odin One-Click.exe contains the Stock MK4 Bootloader, Kernel, Modem and ROM for the Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 2 (SPH-L900). Yes, that means this comes with the full Knox Bootloader.
There has been no change to the ROM from the initial build released by Samsung.
This will NOT trigger the Yellow Triangle NOR will it increment the Odin flash count.
This one-click resets your whole phone to the stock MK4 experience, similar to a factory restore and it may wipe all data. It also contains the full bootloader and Knox.
Instructions:
1: Backup anything important and Disable any PINs.
During this process your phone's software will be returned to the Stock setup. All system data will be lost. To be safe, it is best to archive your backup off your phone, ie on your PC or Dropbox.
2: Install Samsung USB/Android drivers (if necessary).
Samsung Drivers Download Link
3: Download the MK4 Stock ROM One-Click.
SPH-L900_MK4_Full Restore_UNROOTED (Compressed Archive).exe (Resets user data)
4: Unzip One-Click ROM using 7zip (this package is a self-extracting exe you should just be able to double-click on it after download and it will do the rest).
5: Start the Odin One-Click.
Navigate to the location where the SPH-L900_MK4_Full Restore_UNROOTED.exe was saved upon extract from the 7Zip archive.
Double-click on SPH-L900_MK4_Full Restore_UNROOTED.exe. *On Vista or newer, you may need to right-click on the file and Run as Administrator.
6: Place phone in Download Mode.
- Power phone completely off.
- Press and hold Volume Down, Home and Power buttons, all at the same time.
- Release the buttons only when the ‘Warning!!’ message appears.
- Press [Volume Up] to enter Download mode.
7: Connect USB cable to PC and phone.
Odin should show a yellow COM port in the second column. If you do not see a yellow COM port, you may need to run the Odin One-Click as Administrator and/or unplug/plugin the USB cable after starting Odin One-Click.
8: Start Odin flash process.
Press [Start].
9: Complete - PASS!
Status should change to green PASS! At this point your phone should automatically reboot.
Android Instructions:
Download and install ZArchiver on your phone. Use it to unpack the Odin One-Click 7zip self-extracting exe file (long press on the 7zip exe. Select "Open As Archive". Select the One-Click.exe and then select Extract). Use Mobile Odin to Open File the SPH-L900_MK4_Full Restore_UNROOTED.exe. FYI - Modem will not flash with Mobile Odin.
The boot process will take slightly longer than usual during which time you'll see the Sprint 4G logo screen.
Congratulations! You've flashed the Factory Restore MK4 build!

Thanks for this rwillco, not a big deal, but I'm sure people will call you on it & ask if they're in the right place but, on # 3 in op, it says MK3, not MK4, just an fyi. Thanks again.

Thanks for catching that! I've fixed it now.
Unfortunately, System UI has stopped.
Hey guys,
I was recently on the new OTA 4.3, then wiped and rooted after flashing an old PTALJ1 and re updating. Although it was weird that KNOX remained in the bootloader and still said i had Custom Binary Counts (YES 2 Counts) current binary was custom and system status was custom. The KNOX WARRANT VOID had a 1 next to it and AP SWREV:A2
This was after countless times trying to wipe all data and do a complete fresh wipe like I used to always do using the KIES_HOME_L900VPALJ1_L900SPTALJ1_265523_REV04_user_low_ship.tar
For some reason after going to stock 4.3 then backwards to rooted 4.1.2 I had this issue. So I found this on this forums. Gave it a spin and so far seems to have worked great, except when I restart and reboot into download mode, I still show same custom binary counts and knox warranty void. When I reboot I get that system UI has stopped working message. I also am missing icons in the pull down drawer, all that shows is airplane mode and one other. No option to add more.
I am hoping someone can shed some light on what I did wrong or what I can do to fix my issues. All I want is everything back to normal for now, no custom binaries, no voided knox warranty, and system UI working. Thanks guys
Thank you very much
@rwilco12
Do you have any plans to put out a rwilco mk4 stock rooted deodexed minus knox? Just curious.

I would try updating profile and PRL. If that doesn't work verify that your modem is showing under About Phone correctly. If not reflash the One-Click and see if the modem sticks.
Also, try entering ##72786# to re-activate on the network.

tried, but since baseband shows as unknown, i just get the message, "mobile network not available"
even worse, i have the dreaded 1 counter in the knox warranty void now as well
I'm trying a fresh download of the one click and then reflash to see what happens. I will keep you posted.
