Ok Heres whats on my phone
Firmware 2.1-update 1
Build number 1.19.707.CL171460 release keys
Software 1.19.707.7
So heres where i,m a little bit mystified with all this rooting going down.
My new fone is brand free.
So I guess I dont need to bother making a gold card to root the thing with.
Question,,, if i,m unbranded do I need to root the thing.
All I want to do is to remeove **** loads of widgets/programs I dont use. I never use games, Facebook, twitter ect, I preferr to have a slim fone with no crap.
Do I only need a rom upgrade/downgrade.
Another thing,,, I tried 3 different root instructions last night, thru the instructions it says to remove card and set bootloader to recovery mode. Now I may be completely stupid, but,,, there no ways in gods green earth I cane get the card out without really rooting the thing or removeing battery.
Surley I,ve missed some steps.
So guys, all I need to do is rid the fone of Chineese predictive text, some unwanted games and programs ect
HOW the hell do I do this
Check out the second link in my sig for an easy step-by-step guide on rooting. It explains everything very well and you should not have any trouble following it.

I sent you a pm mate.
I just saw a post on Lifehacker, using unrevoked3 to root my desire (id give a link but im new and apparently not allowed), and this seamed like a nice simple process, so i thought id give it a go. but before i do, i just have a few question that id really love a detailed answer or two to, if you would be so kind.
1. Am i going to brick my phone and cry because i bought it unlocked and cant get it replaced because im a poor student?
2. What the hell is this Radio business?
3. Can i put it back to normal so i can get back to OTA updates from HTC when they finally come to there Senses with FroYo (get it )
4. Am I going to lose all my stuff because i cant back it up before i root.
Thats basically it, if you can answer that, id be incredibility incredibility grateful.

1. if u follow the steps exactly as explained, and never touch the phone when it is installing flashing formatting etc etc then u get 99.9% u wont brick it
dont worry im also a student and i bet theres more of us here
2. hmm not sure how to explain what a radio is
3. yes u can, but dont see a reason why, cuz devs update roms quicker and add more functions to them
4. if you just root then no you wont loose your stuff, if you want to install a custom rom then yes you will loose it but you can always back it up using free rommanager back up
This is the main reason why I haven't rooted my Desire yet, despite 1 or 2 friends urging me to. They have Heros. I haven't got the money to replace it and seen as it's on contract I'd be pretty screwed for the next 13 months or something.
Don't worry
Understandable.
I was thinking the same.
It was when I run out of space to install apps and gmail stop working bcoz of low memory space warning.
I decided to take the plunge.
Used unrevoked to root my desire and installing my second rom today lol.
Oh and the radio is the file that contains radio setup for froyo roms.
the one you need for froyo rom is version 5.xx. eg. 32.42.00.32U_5.09.00.08.
so if you are going to install froyo based roms then you need the radio file update or all hell breaks loose.
you can update the radio then install the rom or the other way around up to you.
have fun and ask if you need help.
Was in a similar situation and finally took the plunge today.
Was 10x easier than I thought it would be. Follow the guides and you can't go wrong.

Radio is the part that handles WiFi, gps, 3G and all that stuff. E.g. you have low WiFi signal, you can update the radio to fix it.

Ok guys thanks for all the replies, I'm.defiantly doing it now, my phone alarm has failed to go off too many times now (hey any excuse to convince myself to do it lol) and I want to see if a new ROM will fix it.
Shall I go for OpenDesire or CyanogenMod? I want froyo, and I want it stable (preferably I would still love sense if that's possible).
Also on a side note, I don't want to appear idiotic, I know what a radio is, I just wasn't sure what everyone meant by "update" it, and why you have to do of separately to flashing the ROM.

The ROM's here don't include the radio hence why you need to update the radio seprately, most, if not all, the froyo ROM's will need the latest radio.

Bugs are to be expected but many fixes are to be expected too
opendesire from what i've heard but they lack sense i think, i wanted sense so i chose neophytes rom (it does slow down when i DL stuff from the market sometimes though, i should report it to him)
You flash a radio like a rom, just use unrevoked to do it
BTW use unrevoked with the rooting, easiest thing ever

Sorry about the questions, normally id just go barrelling into to something like this and work it out as i went, but this is serious stuff this time. I want to be sure.
Thanks again

i think it means you just locked your phone to the simcard that was in your phone at the time. Rooting it should unlock it again though
BTW here is an unrevoked guide, neophytes ROM and the radio (use the latest, not the leaked one), follow all the instructions to the letter and you should be fine (follow unrevoked's rom flashing instructions for the radio though, thats how i did it and gawd was it easy)
Thank you very very much. With those guides in hand I'm about to do it. See you on the other side ha ha

I'd tried the other way first and my phone wouldn't root (i was really really frightened when a HTC logo came up and stayed on for a whole 24hrs) so i tried unrevoked and it worked like a charm
Lets hope everything goes a bit smoother for you than me
That really was one of the easiest things i've ever done. Thank you so much for all your help, and the ROM suggestion, loving the new sense.

no trouble then, nice to hear
Have fun, i love it
Sorry to ask a stupid question, can i root my desire, keep my current OS as it is and still get the OTA update to 2.2 as it would if my phone wasn't rooted?
I would try the modaco custom rom, search for it. Its based on the latest leaked rom from HTC so its stable, its froyo, it has sense as well as the new 2.2 features like tethering, new widgets, 720p video etc etc
i rooted my phone at the weekend and im loving it!

Agree, also have the modaco ROM. Best thing is that you bake your own rom and only put items that you really need.

Well mate.. I was pretty much in the same boat as you.. Student, wanting to root my phone, didn't know what all the stuff was.. And I'll try and rectify it for you as much as possible, following your points .
1. If you follow the guides which have been put up by unrevoked, or the guide on this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189 or our lovely friends over at android.modaco http://android.modaco.com/content/h...e-now-with-hboot-0-80-and-os-to-1-21-support/ then you shouldn't have a problem at all. I was feeling the same way, was confused and really didn't want to risk the rooting process.
2. The Radio.. It's not like a Radio which we use to tune in to FM and AM, think of it as something to help other processes work in the phone. Be it Wifi, 3G, HSDPA, GSM.. All these get updated with the new ROM's (Froyo) and they need the Radio to make them run smoother, and better. Think of a Radio as a driver when you're updating something on a computer. But BE CAREFUL when flashing the Radio, DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT touch the phone until it has completely finished booting (2 or 3 times, you'll know when it's finished).
3. You can put it back to normal any time, just by flashing an older ROM on to it, just have a look at some of the official RUU's on this forum.
4. The sort of stuff which you're worried about are photos, text messages and apps? Best way for this is to invest in MyBackupPro, where you can back up all of your texts online etc. For apps and all, why not download ASTRO from the Market? It can back up all your apps and install them again no problems.
I hope this helps
Dan
Hello everyone , i was symbian user and used to helloox the phone an do alot of stuff to the phone , but now when i tried to hack (or you guys call it root) the phone then i come across words i dont get , well i want to root my phone and get some things i want to have like make installations directly on the card , get good scores in quadrant (i get 1025) but i want better numbers but still use the htc sense on my phone please help me i dont get this whole thing here , thanks in advance and sorry if this is a wrong thread , i have desire v2.2 , just turned android a week ago and love it
Everything you need to do is here -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
Dont attempt it unless you understand it do lots of reading.
If you want better quadrant scores use photoshop (or paint).
The rooting process is pretty well explained in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814381
From that point on try searching, it's all been mentioned before.

If you want a nice ROM with Sense I can recommend the LeeDroid ROMs as speedy and stable.
What i found was that Sense was fun for a while but I ended up putting new launchers over the top anyway ....
If you dont mind losing Sense and fancy Gingerbread ROM then im currently using Ginger Villain. Its very impressive and very stable
Redux ROm for the Win
When I got my first Desire, I left it at stock and was still impressed with everything it could do. After a while I decided to root it as I was curious about all of the ROMs available.
I played with various ROMs like LeeDroid, Oxygen, GingerVillain and accidentally stumbled across one called Redux.
I put it on and have not changed since (actually I tried the Villain_au rom for 1/2 an hour, then restored Redux).
My advice would be to root your device, create a Nandroid backup via the recovery boot, then experiment with the various ROMs until you are happy with one. All of the info you need is available through this site, you just need to read a bit.
A word of advice, for the most part, perform a full wipe of the phone with each new ROM. It makes things easier and less things "break".
When you have rooted your phone, make "Titanium Backup" your new friend along with SMS backup tools.
I know enough to be dangerous in terms of rooting and ROMs now, and everything I have learnt so far came from this site.
Hope this helps.
OK, your new to Android.
Actually Desire is also my first Android phone and I have been using it for about 8 months.
What I did until now is first to get use with my phone with its original condition during the first month and also learning if there are more things I could do with my phone, here I found out what is and how to root my Desire.
After about a month, I decided to root my phone because I had problems with the very limited memory for apps installation.
I was confuse which ROM should I use after rooting since I also want better and new ROMs...someone told me about the LeeDroid and I also agreed to use it since LeeDroid is quite similar to the stock ROM but of course with additional functionalities.
Than the flashing-virus got me...and...I flashed many ROMs (RCmixHD, DeFrost, MIUI, RCs Z, etc.) until I decided to settle with BaadNewz 1.3 (now InsertCoin 2.0.1).
S-Off and other more advance things got picked up on the way till now.
All of the knowledge about my Desire came from this incredible Forum and its members...so..search, read and ask to people here...
Here is a start from me:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084
alright i have decided to install oxygen rom cuz its simple and fast and very good as told by the droid guys here , im waiting for my 32gb card to arrive and then install the rom (for partition of 4gb for internal memory) , thanks everyone now the mods can lock this thread
Its not adviced to use ext partition bigger than 1.5gb (market problems)... you would never used it anyways...
1GB is absolutely enough for ext3/4 partition... you can install apps on SD card anyway. ;-)
yea most advanced users and devs would recommend 1gig was the perfect amount of room. anything more then 1.5 gigs will give you issues
alright thanks guys for the advice , today i will go through the reading and understanding stuff then apply it tomorrow
i have orange phone and there are two orange roms to downgrade me phone (unroved says its too new to root) one is orange ch-fr and other is orange ch . which one should i use
Just use orange ch
Hey I'm new to the site so hope not to get shot down in flames for my ignorance (yes i did watch the sign up video).
I have a htc desire hd and am getting realy frustrated at not being able to do use it to its full potential because its not rooted.
I have downloaded the aahk-13012012 tool from this site and have read as much as i can on the subject, problem is I'm getting stuck on a few things i want to do some research before i take the plunge as i cant afford a new phone if i brick this one.
I have looked on this sight and i know im in the right place but its so vast Im getting the needle n haystack feeling. is there any one that can give me a breif explanation of a few of the terms such as "flashing rom or radio" I'm not dumn just new I realy want to root this baby but want to understand what im doing.
And mainl if it does go belly up is there a way to factory reset or recovery option. Thanks in advance.

First of all, let me say welcome to xda and hope you will not be disappointed by the people as there are many helpful folks around with some brainiacs (devs ) around.
Let me say that it can get really easy to very very complicated depending on what type of person you are lol.
Flashing custom roms is something that becomes a hobby (well at least for me) and you can choose one from various options, the one which suits YOU!
First off, you should think about giving some threads in general section a read, google around how to flash custom roms and get familiar with it as most of the methods require you a recovery setup known as ClockWorkMod (google it and read about it). Once you flash clockworkmod, you're pretty much secure from soft bricks and all those sort of problems because you can always access recovery and flash the rom again or clear cache or backup and restore which gets your phone working....
Once you're confident about ClockWorkMod and flashing roms. You should think about these steps and do them if you want to, as you mentioned "using the device to its full potential"
1. Use this tool to S-Off in order to unlock bootloader (in other words, you can flash custom roms freely).
2. Once you think you've done the steps properly, you should shutdown the device then once it's shut down properly. Hold volume down + power to access hboot and if on the top lines, it states s-off then it means you're ready for the next step.
3. This part requires you to flash clockworkmod by looking at this thread.
4. Once you're done with clockworkmod, you can access hboot again by that combination and use volume key to navigate to "recovery" then once you press power button on it, you'll be directed to Clockworkmod.
5. In clockworkmod, you can look for the downloaded zip from your sd card and flash it
Now custom roms, you have a variety to choose from. DO those steps and then you'll know more as you start moving in the direction.
Happy flashing

To put it another way....if a Taliban suicide bomber was running towards you, when your standing there with your family and you have a AK47 in your hands...to shoot or not to shoot?
LOL...anyway...hell yeah...root it dude...u won't regret it.
Matt
Thank you so much for the info.
Exactly the sort of info i was looking for. I've certainly got a lot to learn by the looks of it but such a relief knowing where to start.
Can i just say that if it wasnt for guys like you this world would be moving a hell of a lot slower.
