Trouble free rom flashing using Clockworkmod recovery. - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
After reading through the forums and trying many of the ROMS that the DEV's have put so much hard work and effort into producing it irks me somewhat when you get someone posting that they are having problems with the ROM without trying the basics first.
My number one with trying ANY new rom is a clean install. Running an ROM update from Rom manager doesn't always clear user data correctly and "can" be the source of FC's and other spurious issues that people encounter.....They then report them as a rom issue when really they are not.
Here is how to do a clean install that rules out this possible side effect.
A few things to note first.....
Nandroid, nandroid and NANDROID........Before attempting ANY rom upgrade, ALWAYS create a backup of your current system, then, should it all go wrong you can get back to a working phone.
Google Market on the web will allow you to "push" back all your previous programs, I find it a lot quicker than doing it throught the marketplace on your phone
Copy the ROM zip you wish to install to the root of your SDCARD
Now to the guide.......Assuming you have Clockworkmod recovery V2.5.0.7 or higher.....It tells you what version you have when you boot into recovery....
Restart your phone but hold the volume down button in until the options screen appears....Wait a few seconds while it mounts your sdcard and does a few other checks. Now using the down volume key again move down until RECOVERY is highlighted. Now press the POWER ON button once. Your Phone will reboot into Clockworkmod recovery.
Now on the screen you will see several options, using the trackpad or the volume up/down key you can move up/down the menu. To select use the trackpad button NOT the power on/off button.....On some builds this turns the screen on/off and can confuse.......
>> Go to ADVANCED and select it
>> Go to Dalvik Cache and select it
>> Go to YES - WIPE DALVIK CACHE
When the cache has been wiped (you will get confirmation of this at the bottom of the screen) click your "BACK" button on your phone to return you to your original menu.
Now,
>> MOUNTS AND STORAGE
>> FORMAT BOOT
>> YES - FORMAT
Back key again.
>> FORMAT SYSTEM
>> YES - FORMAT
Back Key again.
>> FORMAT DATA
>> YES - FORMAT
Back key again.
>>FORMAT CACHE
>> YES - FORMAT
Back key again.
>>FORMAT SD-EXT
>> YES - FORMAT
Don't worry if you don't have an EXT partition CWM will tell you this and skip this step.
Back key again,
Back key again, to get you back to the main menu.
>> ADVANCED
>> REBOOT RECOVERY
Wait for your phone to reboot and present you with the recovery screen once more.
Now,
>> INSTALL ZIP FROM SDCARD
>> CHOOSE ZIP FROM SDCARD
Using your trackpad navigate to your previously copied ROM zip file and select it
>> YES - INSTALL *name of selected ROM zip*
AND LEAVE IT ALONE UNTIL IT HAS COMPLETED, IT WILL TELL YOU AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN.
Back key x2
>> REBOOT SYSTEM NOW.....
Your phone should now reboot into your newly flashed ROM!!!! Do bear in mind thought that the first boot of any new ROM can take some time, so my advice is to put the phone down and let it get on with it. Go make a cup of tea or something......
The guide above is by no means exhaustive and there are probably steps that need not be done, however, this is the method I use and to date have had no issues with any new rom I flash other than bugs in the rom itself. But as it is a cleanly flashed ROM I know these are ROM bugs and NOT issues caused by remnants of my old system and because of this feedback to the DEV is more appropriate........Good luck!!!

[Q] I need some help with my rooted EVO...

Hello, a guy from the sprint store helped me rooting my EVO and now he's on vacation.. so , im not able to contact him to do the froyo upgrade on my phone.
I have HBOOT -0.76.2000
2,1-uodate1
1.36.00.04.02
2.6.29-789bf291
biod number : FrEak E Evo v3
Software : 1.47.651.1
Webkit 3.1
PRI Version 1.34_003
my question is : wich rom did you guys recommend me to install because im trying to look for more information on this one but i FAIL.
second : how to install the one that you recommend me ? with Froyo of course..
third : consecuences? advices?
THANK YOU !!
I would just say read...but I did just type up a How-to for my buddy yesterday so copy/paste isn't out of the question. Ignore any personal specific things that are included. This is provided you have FULLY ROOTED your phone. I'm not liable for jacking anything up etc, etc.
Ok, here’s the quick and dirty.
Files you need: download on your phone
Radios:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/yqau3epazcyqdu3/EVO_Radio_2.15.00.07.28.zip
http://www.mediafire.com/file/72eqb78zi71abk8/EVO_WiMAX_26023_R01.zip
ROM: Only choose one
Rooted version of Stock OTA: http://massmirror.com/7f191510efa40b999eec50b09e9dd116.html
*or*
The ROM I’m running now: http://deck.alexauv.com/s3vo_1_2-D_080310_005245.zip
[Edit: I have since updated to Fresh 3.1.0.1]
Download quickboot from the marketplace
Procedure:
1. Move the radios and the ROM you chose to the root of your SD card using whatever file explorer you use. I’m pretty sure you have ES File Explorer on the ROM you have now.
2. Open up People from your app drawer and navigate to Menu>Import/Export>Export to SD Card. This puts a .vcf file on your SD Card. Import after the flash to get your contacts back.
3. You should be good with titanium backup by now. Just remember after you flash, start Titanium, click the problems button, and download the new version of busybox. To do your back up, tap Backup/Restore>Menu>Batch>Restore Missing apps + Data
4. Open up the quickboot program you downloaded from the market and tap “Recovery”. Let the phone reboot to the console.
5. Go to Backup/Restore and press Power to select.
a. Select Nand Backup by highlighting and pressing power
b. Press Power again to confirm
c. If you have issues with 2.2 you can always come back here and restore your current ROM by using your Nand
6. Go back to the previous menu by pressing both up/down on the volume toggle. This can be tricky at times.
7. Highlight Wipe, press power to select
a. Highlight and press power to select, then power again to confirm on the following:
i. Wipe Data/Factory reset
ii. Wipe Cache
iii. Wipe Dalvik – cache
b. Return back to the main menu by holding in both volume keys
8. Navigate to Flash zip from sdcard
9. Highlight and press power to select the Radio-2.15.00.07.28.zip
a. Press power to confirm
b. If it doesn’t take you back to the main menu, return to the main menu and select “Reboot System Now”
i. This reboots the phone and updates the radio.
ii. If it brings you to a black screen with a phone and arrows making a circle, don’t worry this is normal
iii. Once it’s finished, it should reboot back to recovery
10. Return back to flash zip from sdcard
a. Highlight and select the Wimax update26023
i. Follow the same process for the radio
ii. Phone will boot back to recovery
11. Return to flash zip from sdcard
a. Highlight and select the ROM you chose to download
i. Press power to confirm
ii. Sit back and enjoy the script
b. If it does not take you to the main menu when it is finished. Return to the main menu and reboot your phone.
12. Congratulations…you are now running a rooted version of the 2.2 update.
Unless stated otherwise, if you’re on XDA and you see a ROM you want to try out, follow these same steps except the updating radios. You can make Nand backups of each ROM so you can switch between them and see which ones you like better.
That was FAST!! my first post and i'm really impress! TKS!
1. Flash one of the three CYANOGEN RC1, CYANOGEN NIGHTLYS, OR AVALUNCHMOD all are FROYO...IF YOU WANT ONLY FROYO NO SENSE GO WITH CYANOGEN RC1 OR NIGHTLY...BTW CYANOGEN MOD ARE VERY STABLE.
2. BOOT INTO RECOVERY VIA ROM MANAGER (IN THE APP STORE) OR MANUAL 1. POWER OFF THE PHONE. 2. HOLD DOWN THE VOLUME DOWN AT THE SAME TX POWER ON THE PHONE THE WILL PUT YOU IN RECOVERY. 3. STROLL DOWN AND CLICK ON RECOVERY WITH THE POWER BUTTON. 4. DO A NANDROID BACK FIRST THEN FLASH WHATEVER ROM ZIP YOU DOWNLOADED. 5. WHEN IT FINISH INSTALL THE ROM REBOOT THE PHONE. AND YOURE DONE! (TOASTS METHOD)
3. REMEMBER TO DO A NANDROID BACKUP JUST IN CASE SOMETHING GOES WRONG...

We try to take care of people here. Never be afraid to ask questions, but it never hurts to research what you're trying to do either. Most of the devs will give you exactly what you need to flash their roms in the post and as far as the process to flash goes, those threads aren't too far either.
Read, learn, live, mod...gotta love it

android red triangle with exclamation mark

Hi, I install new official ROM on my Desire Z. And something is wrong. On screen is just red triangel. Phone is frozen. When i go to bootloader, nothings happend. Recovery doesnt work
Anybody help me...please.
I assume your phone is rooted. Here is what I can provide so far and hopefully help fix your situation
In order for this to work you have to have recovery working. I'm sure your phone has died by now or you have at least done a battery pull. If so try these steps
1. Make sure G2 is off and plugged in Via USB on your computer
2. Push and hold the VOLUME DOWN BUTTON while also pushing down and holding the POWER BUTTON. After a few seconds it should boot into bootloader
IF STEP NUMBER 1 DOES NO SUCCEED THEN THE NEXT STEPS WILL NOT APPLY AND SORRY THAT I HAVE NO OTHER KNOWLEDGE TO FIX
3. Using the volume rocker, select recovery and push the power button to accept
4. You should now be in recovery
5. Using the volume rocker or track pad, navigate to Wipe Data/Factory Reset, push track pad to select, track pad to accept "yes I want to want" (or something along those lines )
6. After data has been wiped navigate to Wipe Cache and do same as above
7. Navigate to storage and mounts, scroll down to mount storage and select
8. Your SD should now appear on your computer and freely view your SD card as normal.
9. Check to see if the Rom zip that you used is still on your SD card, if not. Drop on the root of your SD card. The root of your SD card is basically the location which when your SD first opens up on your computer that shows all the folders. Just drop it Anywhere
10. Back to the G2, unmount storage
11. Press back until you are back to the main Recovery page
12. Navigate to advanced and Wipe Dalvik Cache
13. Back to Main Recovery Page
14. Select Install Zip
15. Select install zip from sd card
16. Select the Rom Zip, then Yes I want To Install
17. Back to Main recovery Page
18. Reboot System
19. Smile and say, "YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY"

[Q] Help, stuck in reboot loop

Basically I was running stock 2.2 on my phone and did the usual steps to root it, unrevoked 3 ran all fine clockworkmod recovery flashed fine, booted up first time round fine. But then I flashed the most recent version of super user and now every time I try to boot it just gets to the HTC logo turns itself off and starts again.
I have tried backing up and restoring, wiping data, sd, cache, dalvik and nothign has helped so far. And I can run the RUU for my phone because it wont run unless I am booted into android, please help me ><
SERIOUSLY? You didn't even LOOK.. not going to mention about searching.. There are SO many threads that could have helped you.. but the most obvious one to me would be the big TROUBLESHOOTING one that is right on the top of everything.
Right, sorry I did quickly look but I panicked a little bit. I shall make sure I look more effectively in the future ^^
I would use ADB to flash the old super user apk, or to flash a new rom.

BOOT PROBLEMS
"I just flashed a new ROM, and I get a bootloop.. Help!"*
"I just flashed a new ROM, and it just stays on the HTC screen"
"My phone randomly rebooted itself and now it won't boot"
*This is a fairly common problem, and is solved very easily.
Possible causes of bootloops/ phone stuck on HTC Screen:
- You are S-OFF, and you have not got the correct partition table that is required for the ROM.
- Some ROM's require an SD-EXT partition, you either have not got this or have not done it correctly.
- For whatever reason, the ROM did not install properly.
[1]To fix a bootloop/ stuck on HTC Screen:
[STEP1]- do a battery pull to power off the device (as this is the only way to do so when stuck in a bootloop)
[STEP2]- hold the VOLUME DOWN button and the POWER button to boot into the bootloader
[STEP3]- use the VOLUME UP/DOWN buttons to navigate, and POWER to select. Navigate to RECOVERY.
[STEP4]- select "mounts & storage" and then select the following options
[STEP5]- format boot
[STEP6]- format system
[STEP7]- format data
[STEP8]- format cache
[STEP9]- format sd-ext (IF YOU HAVE IT)
[IF YOU HAVE A BACKUP]
[STEP10a]- go back to the main menu, select "back up & restore", select "restore" and restore the latest working backup.
[IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A BACKUP]
[STEP10b]- go back to the main menu, select "install zip from sdcard", then "choose zip from sdcard", and flash a ROM which you KNOW works. If you have none, try my failsafe: CyanogenMod
- reboot system now
#PHONE STILL DOESN'T BOOT#
[IF YOU USED YOUR BACKUP, OR A ROM THAT IS NOT CYANOGENMOD]
- Repeat the process, and flash cyanogenmod instead of restoring a backup or a different ROM.
[IF YOU ARE USING A RECOVERY THAT IS NOT CLOCKWORKMOD 2.5.0.7]
- Download Clockworkmod 2.5.0.7.zip and place it in your sdcard.
- boot into recovery, select "install zip from sdcard", then "choose zip from sdcard" and choose "recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.7-bravo.zip"
- repeat [1] from [STEP4] onwards

is this a joke or what?
u formatted everything (included system where the OS is installed)...what do u expect to boot now? u deleted everything in ur phone
flash a rom
Oh boy... Here we go again... Sorry to be an ass but read people READ before go messing with your multi hundreds dollar/euro phone! And don't use the B word.
Flash a ROM and be sure to read what you should do, in what order, what the risks are and how NOT to do it. There is a huge information source right on these forums but try to give it some effort yourself.
/* end rant */
Now go to the devellopment section, read all stickies and if you then don't succeed: ask again.

the good news is your phone is not bricked, you need to learn to use fastboot and reinstall android.

Welcome to XDA, next time a search would have gotten you the information you were looking for.
The good news is, you're not bricked. Boot into recovery manually, mount USB and attach your phone to your computer. From there you can drop a rom into your phones storage and flash.
Take some time and read through some of the threads. Starting with the pinned ones at the top of the page.
FLASHING a rom 101:
Switch off phone
Boot to RECOVERY mode by pressing the Volunme buttons and POWER button simultaneously .
Scroll the Volume button down till you see “RECOVERY MODE ” . Then press POWER button to select.
The phone will boot into Recovery mode and you will see the RECOVERY menu.
Using the vol buttons , scroll up or down to and perform the following actions :
Press POWER button to activate your choice
- Clear cache partition
- At Advanced – select it and choose Clear Dalvik Cache
- Select ” wipe data/factory reset” ( Read the NOTES below on this step )
- GO Back and select ” Install zip from SD card” – than select ” Choose zip from SDcard” . You will see a list of all your files in the SDcard – use the volume button to scroll up or down and select the rom zip file . Press POWER button to select it
Your phone will start to flash the new rom
Wait for process to finish and phone will reboot successfully into the new rom. This process will take 2-3 minutes to complete
NOTES : Most rom developers will advise you to wipe phone , ie clear data/factory reset when flashing their upgraded roms or new roms. The main reason is to avoid bugs or unnecessary force closures and all such reports with phone wipe clean will enable the rom developers a more accurate assessment of your issues. However this step is really unnecessary if you are flashing among roms of same build ( eg 4.0.3). It is advisable to wipe clean if you are moving from say 4.01 or 4.0.2 to 4.0.3. Anyway if you did not wipe phone clean and you faced continual rebooting , than last option is switch off phone. Boot back to recovery mode, select clear data/factory reset and reboot system
You use the same method if you just need to flash KERNEL only. Just copy the kernel zip file into phone and follow same procedures. NO need to clear data/factory reset if you are flashing kernel only...
thank u everyone i solve the problem using galaxy nexus root toolkit v1.3 i press flash stock + unlock and my phone is workin sorry guys but thank u

Read before messing with your phone please.
It is a little late but with search you will find this thread easily.
you can just flash a recovery with fastboot no problem at all.
then boot to recovery and flash what ever u want.
Yo. Don't go formatting stuff unless Instructed to.
And also have a rom ready if you do this. If you would like a place where all the roms are I'll send you a link.
Are you a CDMA sprint or Verizon???
Or a GSM???
