[Q] Aus Vodafone - internet will only work with facebook/weather - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've got an unbranded A8181 HTC Desire, and I've done all the usual set ups for the internet via APNs etc.
I know it works because I get the 3G / E / H symbols when I turn it on and facebook will update, as well as syncing my gmail, weather etc.
I've found, however, that I can't seem to do any actual web browsing when the internet is connected.
Google loads up fine (takes about a full minute to do so) but search terms don't work. It consistently comes back with "web page not available", yet if I use the WiFi at uni, I can use google without any issues.
I managed to open a website that I had checked earlier through the WiFi while my internet was connected but that might be because the page information was already in the cache, since wikipedia won't open.
Has anyone else had this problem?
since its not looking like its the browser (default HTC one) because I can open pages on it from uni, but the internet does seem to work for account syncing so it's not looking like its that either...

Opera crashes and Internet connection probs with TP2

Hi all,
I am loving my TP2 but have a couple of annoying issues. anyone else experiencing the same...?
Firstly Opera keeps crashing. Tends to happen when trying to log in to a site. www.facebook.com mobile site is fine but crashes if I try to log in to the full site. I downloaded Opera 9.7beta and it does the same on that one too.
Also my internet connection keeps dropping. If downloading emails it might download the headers then lose the connection. Sometimes pressing send/receive gets it back online but othertimes it wont connect again until I go in to comm manager and turn the phone radio off then back on.
Frustrating problems that I didn't expect from a brand new device.
Never tried logging into the full site. I tried it right now but it I can't even input my username. So I gave up. Using the mobile site is just as good. I don't think it can handle the full site anyway.
I have never lost my connection in a good reception area. It could be your area or your carrier that has a weak reception. Try in a different area or try the phone using another network or carrier. Ask a friend to help you that uses a different network.
Make sure they are ok with you using data tho.
I had the same problem when logging on full Facebook site on my old Kaiser with Opera 9b1, it was crashing.
But on my TP2 using the included Opera, its working quite good without crashing.
Maybe you installed another sofware that uses all the memory ? just a random guess.
Looks like the HTC built in T-Mobile settings could be the cause.
The built in settings have a Proxy Server setting that I couldnt remove so I set up a new connection using:
general.t-mobile.uk
user
pass
And did not set up a static IP address. It seems to be stabler in the 20 mins I have used it and I can now log in using the WM Facebook program as previously it would not let me log in.
Hope that helps someone.
I'm back again for some help!
I have managed to get Facebook working and Opera no longer crashes using the new data settings I entered but I am still losing my data connection.
When I lose it I get the "Cannnot connect for an unknown reason" pop up box. If I clear it I can occassionally get the connection to then activate but usually I am having to cycle the phone radio within Comm Manager before it will go online. This is really annoying as if the box comes up it won't check for email till I OK the message and get the data connection working again.
I am using a T-Mob sim that worked fine in my Tytn II and checked all settings but all seems ok.
Could it be a faulty radio that keeps kicking me offline? Calls seem ok. I have dropped a few but have also had 30 min + calls so seems to be specific to data.

Opera 9.7 beta
I tried installing the new Opera beta on the unlocked/unbranded Touch Pro 2 it either doesn't start getting stuck at the splash screen or it starts and then crashes after a click or two. I am unable to use it at all. Anyone else experiencing this problem?

Tilt2 Facebook app and stocks tab only connect over WiFi

The Facebook app and stocks tab (on TouchFlo3D) on my ATT Tilt2 no longer update except via WiFi (they both update perfectly over WiFi).
The built-in Facebook app seems to login fine. But refreshing info just hourglasses endlessly. I don't think this has ever worked right.
The Stocks tab on the TouchFlo3D Today page also never updates. Just times out with a Connection Error after a minute or so. The Weather tab works fine. Stocks tab worked at one point, but no longer updates.
Is there some kind of proxy thing going on? I've previously disabled the ATT proxy in order to get the YouTube app to work (which works perfectly now). I had to edit the registry to make the change stick, per the instructions on the ATT forum by Vendetta on the following page (near bottom of page 2): http://forums.wireless.att.com/cng/board/message?board.id=cingular&thread.id=123280&view=by_date_ascending&page=2. Disabling the proxy using the built-in CAB worked, but the proxy would be restore after a soft reset. I've poked around the registry a bit for proxy entries which might be causing the above issues, with no luck.
Opera, IE, and everything else I can think of work fine over the wireless data connection.
I've searched around on these forums and Google, and haven't found any significant mention of a similar issue. Any ideas?
Anybody? I know there are a mess of smart people here with some ideas . . .
You could try this:
go to start-settings-connections-connections, advanced on the bottom tab then select networks. Make sure your primary data connection is selected in the first drop down box.

Everything looks in order under the Connections settings, but thanks for the tip.
Strangely, both the Facebook app and the Stocks tab spontaneously started working again today, after not working for 1-2 months. They seem to be working perfectly, and update in a couple seconds. I haven't changed a thing on the phone. So it would appear that perhaps something was happening on ATT's end.
Aghhh. The problem has returned. Again, I haven't changed anything. So something is happening on ATT's end. I've also noticed that the WeatherBug app has the same problem, only updates via WiFi.
Really annoying!
I have the opposite problem... stocks update in seconds and weather gives me "connection error while attempting to download weather data"
Any suggestions? Everything else works fine, internet, email (pushed from hotmail), etc.
Offical confused...this morning everything works fine.
Stocks tab only thru WAP
I have the same issue. Stocks tab not connecting thru wireless internet, only WAP (wireless application protocol). Have to stop current connection and reconnect using WAP setting. However, with WAP weather tab not working. Also in WAP, usual internet web pages cannot load, only web pages meant for mobile phones can load.

Unvoluntary big internet donwnloads

I live in Bolivia, my cellular provider is Tigo.
I own and HTC Touch pro2 (AT&T HTC Tilt2) and I had this problem: Involuntary internet connections happen in my phone, my cellular provider has billed me 16 MB for internet navigation in a single day. Their explanation is that probably phone has connected in background using an application. I know the touch flo interface connects to download e-mail headers and weather reports, but I find difficult that this application can use 16MB What can be happening?
As I said all the 16MB were downloaded in a single day and the last 3MB in 5 minutes after downloading internet connection.
Besides the default applications I have just installed pocket e-sword, a bible reader that does not connect to Internet
Is there an application that downloads this quantity of information?
If so, how can I disable it?
Is there any way to see which is the server where my cell connected and what it was doing?
Is there any way to set up my phone with a max download data amount?
The solution that the cell provider gave me momentanially is to disable my internet conection, but that is not exactly what I want.
Thanks on advance.
Igor
Well if you are using Sense, it downloads weather if you dont have it set not to. You might also want to disable the "Get my location at anytime" feature, because it may use AGPS. But I really dont know what else would cause this other than the fact that it is Windows, and it loves its TCP/IP. but the best thing to do would be to use MoDaco - No data to disable the data connections, then when you want to use them just turn them back on.
Thank you
What's MODACO???
How do I disable "Get my location at anytime" ???
Modaco is another website with a forum.
Not sure if this is the latest version, but a quick google of this site turned up the Modaco No Data cab attached to this thread.
btw, you could use something like the SPB GPRS monitor to keep an eye on when internet connections are being made, and how much data is being down/uploaded. If you check task manager when you see a connection being made, perhaps we can trace where the data is being requested. I believe there is a demo version available of this program. I've not yet got a TP2, but can at least confirm that this monitor works fine on a TyTn II. You'll need to tell it which connection to monitor. Battery Status plugin for the today screen should apparently also do the trick.
If you ever get really desperate, you could always use WiFi at home to test without involving spending more, and use your PC to sniff the packets, check for what IP addresses and types of data are being requested. There maybe an app to do this directly on your phone, but I've not looked.

Problem with Wifi hot spot

HI all.
At my work place we have open wifi hotspot. Only thing i need to do to use it is to register on it when connecting for the 1st time, when doing it on laptop it simply pops website, where i need to enter email adress and my age, is one time operation (it records MAC adress i guess). I cant get it done with my Desire, i can see network, but it wont let me open any website, tried different browsers but no luck.
Any clues?
Thanks
Most sites with free access require you to leave the registration page open, then open a second window to browse. So open new window from menu and try that?
I cant even load 1st page, and yes tried new window, changed user agent too. No luck. Bit annoying as im working on the kitchen and could have spotify running all day long, with my 500mb worth data plan that aint an option. I went through quite few different roms alredy, started on stock desire one, now im on latest OpenDesire. My mates Nokia works just fine, web browsing, radio, youtube and so on.
Thanks

[Q] internet connection through wifi problem

I upgraded from my G1 to the new G2.
I am in the military and currently deployed to Iraq. I pay for wifi internet in my dorm. Using my Laptop or my G1 i am able to connect to a wifi service out here that i pay for. once i connect i pull up the browser and it will redirect me to the log in page for the server (where we have to enter a username and pass to allow acceses to the internet. without entering it we are only connected localy). when i use my G2 i can connect to the wifi hotspot no problem, it shows me "obtaining IP adress" and then says "connected to balad-hotspot" just like it would on my computer or G1. but when i pull up the browser it just goes to a "web page not available" for anything i type in. it wont automatically redirct me like both my laptop and G1 do. i even tried typing in the adress it pulls up on my computer when it loads the log in screen, but still shows me "web page not available" Does the G1 and G2 use the same browser? and if so why doesnt it redirect me? what else could cause this problem or fix it please?
with the new OTA update for wifi calling and sms messages you can see why i would love to have this issure fixed. also if i go to a free wifi area (such as a recreational center, where there is no log in neccessary, just connect and go) i have no problem connecting with my G2. so i know the wifi works with it. it just wont seem to redirect my to the log in page or allow it to come up.
firstly: thanks for what you do for our country.
try a different browser. i recommend dolphin HD
thank you!
hmm ok, ill try looking for that tomorrow. can be found in market?
Yes, it is in the market
Wow, they have WiFi at Balad now? Man, when I was there 3 years ago we had to wait in line for a computer! As the others have said, try using a different browser. I'm always switching between the default and Opera depending on what page I'm trying to access.
Oh yeah, if it's anything like Google Voice, the new update may not work for WiFi calling, depending on what country the IP address you snag is registered to. I had Google Voice on my G1, and as soon as I went to Europe and tried to use it on a WiFi hotspot, I got a message saying that Google Voice was not usable in the country I was in.
Stay safe and don't eat too much Taco Bell or Burger King!
haha ya, but its a HUGE rip off. way expensive and slow as can be. but its really our only option to get interent in dorm so im a sucker and bought it.
and for the goodle voice, hmmm i have it on my laptop and it works with this internet. dont know if it will be different with G2 but we shall see.
I tried Dolphine HD and Opera and still having the same issue. it only ever pulls up "web page cannot be displayed" The Internet guys out here said it was my browser. i confirmed with tmo that the browser is the same for the G1 and the G2. yet it works with G1 and not G2. and still wont work with any of the new browsers. Im stuck and this blows!!!
