i have a htc wildfire which comes with a 512mb of internal memory. but as soon as i got my phone of the market, it shows only 90mb left under phone memory. i do understand that this comes from the built in phone apps, data, cache and etc. but i need an easy solution to free up the memory as it could slow down my phone. any help?
ps: my phone is on 2.2.1 froyo and hboot 1.01 so yeah i can't root it! :x
It doesn't come with 512 MB internal memory, but, with 175 MB. So, having ~100 MB on a stock phone is normal.
You are probably mixing up some other space (ROM, I think), with the internal memory.

omg you're right i guess. but then how come its not advertised for having such amount of internal memory? mind telling me what're your sources?

You can look up any mobile spec listing site (Eg: GSMArena). It is clearly listed there 512 MB is the ROM Size on the Wildfire, not its internal memory.
Besides, I think the amount of internal memory can be seen under Settings also on the Stock ROM as well. (Not sure, since it has been months since I have been running the stock ROM), but, on CM7, it clearly shows Available Internal Storage and Total Internal Storage. (Which is 175MB)

yeah gsmarena shows that it has 384 MB of RAM and 512 MB of ROM. didn't say anything about internal memory. on the stock ROM it only shows the available internal storage space, nothing for total. so i couldn't figure out what was the total internal storage size..hehe
anyway thank for the info, it sure relieved me to some point guess i have to wait for the root to come. go unRevoked!
go unRevoked! +1 this

WRONG.
If you are on 2.2, you probably have HBOOT 1.01 wich cant be rooted. Its about HBOOT, not android version.

Hi All,
Today I got my new TP2 and it looks great, but I think I have a problem with the memory.
In the Storage I have total 277.72MB and in the Program I have 187.61MB, as I understand its spouse to be 512MB/256MB?
By the way in the Device Information I have 512MB/256MB.
Please let me know if its OK?
Thanks,
Same with my one, Datamemory is 291,04 and Programmemory is 188,21.
I think it's because of prorams and system data that can't be deleted, so only the memory that you can completely use is showed.

Thanks for very quick answer.
some storage space is used up by stock rom for the applications cooked in. these application use up some of your memory to run. the remainder is what you see once stock rom has booted and loaded! perfectly fine. future custom roms should require less memory to run and the apps cooked in will also use up less storage space. memory will improve and you will have more storage space.
Hi Peeps
I've been a big fan of reading these pages (I have a Moto Milestone/Droid too) and was wondering if you could please possibly help.
I have just been given a UK HTC Desire, running 2.2
One of my apps/widgets, Mini Info, tells me that the on board Disk Space is just 147 MB
I have read everywhere that the Disk Space should be around 512-576 MB so am totally puzzled.
The device is brand new, I only received it yesterday.
Any ideas where the missing disk space is folks?
Thanks so much for your help and for reading this. x
As I understand it the free space is whats left after all the Operating System, Boot Sector and Radio is written to the memory. 150Mb is about right and you will soon use it unless you flash Froyo and move your apps to the SD Card.

hello, from what I know, 512 mb is ROM and 576 mb is RAM. You can not use this as it is used for your phone to run smoothle, just like RAM and ROM in you pc, although they are much higher (1gb to 4gb+)
hope this helps, by the way, all phone specks are on hTc website...

Cheers James - really appreciate the quick response. That makes sense, so thank you.
To root, or not to root. Thing is (as you can probably tell) I'm not that techie minded - although I am an Android geek! And proudly so.

If you want a total backup and dont care about warranty then you root otherwise there is little point tbh.
you are already running froyo (2.2 as say) you can move apps that you install to the sd card as long as the app supports it.
also if you are running froyo OTA you cannot root your phone yet. there isn't a way that you can easily root it. the only way is to downgrade (search forum) or wait till someone finds an easier way to root it.
Just move some applications to the SD card and you will get some more space.
I have little background in traditional PC hardware. So if some one says their computer specs are 3Ghz dual core, 4 GB ram, 1TB hard drive I can understand it.
Say my EVO specs are:
1 GHz Scorpion processor, Adreno 200 GPU, Qualcomm QSD8650 Snapdragon chipset
Internal 512 MB RAM; 1 GB ROM
I am guessing your EVO has the same specs.
So what is my RAM?
and What is my internal storage?
__________________________________________________________________________________________________
I installed Quick system Info pro and it gave me the following specs:
SD Card storage: 7.39 GB, Free 6.8 GB
A2SD Storage : 211MB , Free 65 MB
Internal Storage: 426 MB , Free 291 MB
System Storage: 350 MB Free 68.2 MB
System Cache : 160 MB , Free 157 MB
Memory : 415 MB , Free 109 MB, Idle 14.61 MB
Can some one please take a look at the above stats and tell me what they mean and what can I do to increase my performance as far as making my phone snappier/faster?
____________________________________________________________
Is that "disk" space or RAM available? Or am I talking completely different things?
If I uninstall apps, this space is freed, will my phone be snappier too becuase of increased space? Is RAM == Disk space in these phones?
ANyone help me out understanding this?
Also, I installed apps2sd and I move whatever apps I can to sd card but not all? This was before I rooted the EVO. so
does apps2sd doesnot require root? Then why doesnt google do that by default?
Finally, I rooted the phone using unrevoked recently, is there a way for me to move the remaining apps to sd card which did not move when the phone was un rooted?
Sorry for the barrage of questions. Its saturday and I meant to ask these questions for a long time so I guess I will do the due diligence today.
Thanks guys!

From the overall memory, 512 MB are for use in storage while another 512 MB are for RAM. These are hard limits, freeing one does not necessarily means adding to the other.

See above. There are ways to make the phone more responsive: installing a new kernel can help OR using an overclocking app such as setCPU or juice defender. Obviously, faster phone == faster battery drain in most cases.

Google's app2sd and the app2sd included with certain custom roms (darktremor's) are different things: the google one can only move the app IF the app itself supports it, in some cases ONLY the data associated with the app is moved not the actual app. This does not require a separate EXT2/EXT3 partition.
Darktremor's A2SD works by moving the entire app and its data to the SD card by creating a link to the SD card, the issue with this is that the SD card MUST be partitioned and EXT3 formatted in order to work properly. Not the entire SD card must be partitioned, only a small fraction of it (512 MB).
Finally, I rooted the phone using unrevoked recently, is there a way for me to move the remaining apps to sd card which did not move when the phone was un rooted?

Yes, you can run the command using a computer with ADB installed OR from a terminal emulator: apps2sd reinstall. After you run it, it will reboot the phone OR it will display any errors that prevent A2SD from running properly. You must already have the SD card partitioned in order to use this. Note that you must run the command on 'root' mode or it will display error msgs everywhere that might not be connected with the real error. So make sure you run su first (unless the command prompt already runs in root mode).
i really do not know enough to fully explain it to you.
but if you take all the info you have and add it up you will find all you RAM and ROM.
about 1.5 gb of memory.
Internal Storage: 426 MB , Free 291 MB
System Storage: 350 MB Free 68.2 MB
System Cache : 160 MB , Free 157 MB
Memory : 415 MB , Free 109 MB, Idle 14.61 MB
android takes your phone memory (not sd card) and splits it ... to use as it sees fit.
if you are low in memory because you have too much installed..
when you uninstall apps.. you do free space for the phone to you and will see better performance.
but from your posted info.. your phone should not see any performance issues. I dont see issues till my free storage memory falls below 120 mbs.
you do have memory lost that you nor your phone can use:
System Cache : 160 MB , Free 157 MB
and there should be a few others too... about 200mb lost.
there is a way to get it back, but it is not for NOOBs to try.
Search in the development forum of evo ... for firerat partition mod.
Hi
I am so curious about my phone ROM size. I'm not sure if I was cheated. My phone specs say that Internal Memory(ROM) is 4G but when I check it with Antutu, it show only 222MB. Was I cheated? Please check the link and attachment for screenshot.

Are you asking about your phones ROM, RAM or internal storage? The only number give in the Specifications is 4GB of internal memory... which means internal storage for apps and such.

It should be 4GB but Antutu show only 222MB. That's why I'm curious. Did you check attachment for my screenshot?
No the attachment was unable to open for me... But to answer your question I have seen some factory installed ROM's as large as 6gb so im not suprised that most of your space has already been taken. Just add an Micro SD card. Another way to check is to hook it up to your PC and see how much space windows says it should have. You can also find the largest files and see if its bloatware or something else.

OK, I attached JPG. Why 4GB turn to 222MB? It is not even close.
First of all you are not in the right forum, this is the i747(m) forum. Secondly the information you are looking at is the physical memory (RAM), and the size of the rom that is installed (ROM, go figure). This simply means that the partition size to install an OS on your device is 222 MB large, which is stored on the internal storage (sdcard). The specs for the device list 4GB total internal storage, after subtracting system reserved space (ROM, Recovery, Bootloader, etc.) you are probably left with a little over 3 GB of actual accessible storage space. The screen shot you have provided does not include the internal storage capacity.

That Internal Storage is ROM, isn't it? Why did you say it doesn't include Internal Storage Capacity? I attached another half of Device Information. Please check.

No, as i stated in the instance of this screen shot the ROM label is signifying the size of the partition you have available to install an OS, i say it doesn't include internal storage because it doesn't mention internage storage (or sdcard) anywhere in the pictures. I have never used Antutu so i downloaded to see what it looked like on mine and it is much more detailed. I attached a screenshot, and i also attached a screenshot of the storage menu from the settings menu, which is all you need to look at to find out how much internal storage you have. As you can see my device has 1700 MB of RAM (physical memory) and although their label of 'memory' under storage is incorrect and misleading you can see it matches exactly and is in fact the internal storage size...the information you are seeking. You can see the same information on internal storage with the built in storage menu. You will also notice that i only have a useable 12GB, when my phone actually has 16GB internally....this is because of system reserved space. Im not really sure how much more specific i can get about the difference between RAM, ROM, and storage....i hope this helps.
On a commentary note, seriously dude if your device only had 222 MB of internal storage after the intial install size of your ROM you are left with 46 MB, you would be hardly able to install a couple apps and cache a few websites before you phone decided life isn't worth it and jumped out the window.

Do you think Android 2.3 OS take more than 3GB? It could be enough for OS for PC. I'm not sure if you say ROM and Internal Storage is different?

That is precisely what i said, in great detail.
I don't get it well. If they are different, why both of them are not mentioned together in specs list. Basically, If Internal is mentioned, no ROM is mentioned. Look at this link for example. Spec show only ROM, no Internal Storage.

Their specification is labeled wrong. Like i said several posts ago, go into the settings menu on your phone, then storage. This will tell you how much internal storage you have available and a chart of what is using it.

One reason I'm trying to figure out if manufacturer sold me what I've been told. The second reason, I want to buy a new phone which is not popular brand like Samsung. If I can't figure out what is the real Internal Storage, I might end up buying a phone with very small internal storage which I won't be able to install many apps. I mean 4GB is really enough for me if it is really 4GB, not 222MB or less.
Can someone tell me what this means? Also for some reason I can't install certain apps, such as firefox, even though it states that I have about 600 mb of free space?

It would help if you give out more information, like how and where do you get this message.
And about the problem with installing Apps, I think the 600MB of free space you are seeing are of your Micro SD Card because the Xperia Play only has around 400MB of Internal Storage.

I see this mesage when I enter cwm. I'm using x elite gamer and xtreme kernel.
The 600 mb should be from the internal storage (I think its a custom partition) because I have a 32 gb sd card and it does have many things on it.
