[Q] Change Bootanimation on JVx (2.3.3) - Galaxy S I9000 Themes and Apps

Hi everybody!
I noticed that flashing bootanimation (.zip file) via recovery or overwrinting them in the system folder (/system/media/video/shutdown for example) is not working on Android 2.3.3 (JVK/JV1).
Is there any other possibility to change the bootanimation??
Thanks in advance for your knowledge!
Marco

Hi
I have the same problem. I think it's because none of the Kernels currently available for Gingerbread have support for custom Boot Animations.

@Rimmer1966: Exactly. There aren't kernel for Gingerbread that have the custom bootanimation support for now ...

Just drop the file in the system/media folder and it works, doesn't matter that there isn't one there to replace

Can't be done I'm afraid, the image is stored within the bootloader, and flashing new bootloaders can permenantly brick your device.

Tks for the answer.
Anyway, I decided yesterday to replace at least the glowing "S" , so I found this 2 part animation (in one file) in one of the HTC Hero G2 threads, which is Android first smashing and then peeing on apple:
First part:

"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Second part:
I have seen the peeing Android before, but this one got also the smashing Android
If you want to use it, download the the file (see attachment) and push it to the right folder
It's working fine on my JVK , fits like a glove, but when I have time I will modify it a little by redrucing the dimensions of the images and darken them, in order to save battery, specially on those situations when booting takes longer....

It's working fine on with Ramad's Deodexed JVK+CF Root , fits like a glove, but I guess the kernel you are using have to support it; CF Root 3.0 does it, for the rest ask Ramad.
So I placed the bootanimation.zip in system/media and removed the other 2 files (bootsamsung.qmg and bootsamsungloop.qmg) so I got a funnier/different boot screen and as extra bonus, 2mb more space in /system
When I have time I will modify it a little by reducing the dimensions of the images and darken them, in order to save battery, specially on those situations when booting takes longer....
P.s.- I found some pretty impressive boot screen animations but the files are huge.
The peeing Android is a small file, quite handy...
. .Well, 7 downloads till now and only 1 thanks....how rude
Anyway, I moved on, been testing other animations and for the moment I am using the Nexus/Win7 bootanimation:
the one I have is moving slower than the example above (even nicer) and tested by me....

How to change the shutdown animation I did copy png files to /media/video/shutdown nothing changed
I also deleted bootsamsung.qmg and bootsamsungloop.qmg now the shutdown animation is gone but the png files not played

DamianGTO's Ginger Kernel also supports bootanimations.

It is just ./data/local/ - /data/ is located in the root folder (same as system)
Did you try flashing this one? http://www.filefactory.com/file/b363f2c/n/update_ba_R2D2_Signed_Data.zip
I prefer to fully replace the boot animation in system/media to save space (but you do have to replace it every time you update) :/
I'm not sure why it isn't working, I just downloaded the files, and they're set-up correctly.
If you know how, you can copy it manually via terminal or adb.

badluck for me again....i flashed it but still m not able to see starwars animation i guess i need to download the bootanimation.zIP and need to use the terminal..
i guess you are right i need to clear the bootanimation.zip entry present in the system/media/ to upgrade it to another bootanimation
wot happen before when i upgrade it to the matrix bootanimation it worked and when i tried to go back to the default one (by deleating the entry in data/local/) I am not able to find the path so i again flashed by using terminal the default bootanimation.
lets see if i can get it by terminal.
hureyeeee !!!

If there isn't a bootanimation.zip in ./system/media/ or ./data/local/ then when you boot, the screen will simply go black after the initial G1 splash screen until the gui starts. The gui starts relatively quickly, but the rest of the OS takes much longer, so the wait time is the same.
Can you post mirror link trough 4shared or something please

[9001][Collection][UPD: 16/04/2012] Boot Animations (added: more broodROM animations)

Hi all,
Introduction
I have seen some boot animations appear here and there. Not sure whether there's already other threads for other ROMs which contain these same boot animations, and whether these bootanimations can be used on other devices too, but I decided to add them to one thread to make it simpler.
Install Instructions
I have created cwm-installable-packages for each of them, as I think it's easier to load them that way:
Make sure feamod recovery is installed, click here for more info
Make sure your ROM supports sanim.zip boot animations
Put the animation(s) you chose on your (external) sdcard
Reboot in recovery (feamod/cwm) - poweroff, press vol-up and poweron and wait till recovery appears
Select "install zip from sdcard"
Select "choose zip from sdcard"
Browse to your bootanimation and select to install it
Select "reboot system now" and enjoy your new boot animation
If it doesn't work, extract the sanim.zip and install them the regular way with Root Explorer or something like that
Please note that they are all sanim.zip based, so please check whether you ROM supports it (or ask me ).
Disclaimer
As usual: I have no idea what I am doing, it simply works the way I do it, so I am not responsible to any problems this stuff may cause...
I have personally tested all of these:
ICS_CWM.zip
Nexus_One_CWM.zip
androidBoot_CWM.zip
broodROM_RC2_CWM.zip
i9001_bios-binary_CWM.zip -- does not work !! Anyone willing to try and fix it?
i9001_bios_CWM_v1.0.zip
i9001_bios_scifi_CWM_v1.1.zip
rotating_android_CWM.zip
xda_CWM.zip
broodROM_RC1_CWM.zip
broodROM_RC2_Custom_CWM.zip
Removing animation (return to stock) & sound
I also had the sudden idea to remove the animation with a cwm-zip, which will give you the stock samsung animation. Attached a zip to remove the boot animation and as a bonus also a zip to remove the boot sound
remove_animation_CWM.zip
remove_bootsnd_CWM.zip

Flashed the .zip and although the boot animation works, I am stuck in an infinite boot loop. In fact the phone works, I can tap the screen and open random programs but I can't actually see what I am doing because the boot animation doesn't 'go away'.
Had to reflash a whole new ROM to get things working again. Shame because it was a nice boot animation, but unfortunately no one in this thread has reported any success with this boot animation one way or the other.

Instructions:
1. Download to your phone's SD card
2. Flash in recovery
3. Reboot from recovery.
4. Behold the glory of the Galaxy Nexus boot animation on your Galaxy S III
For those of you who wish to know, the bootanimation is flashed to /data/local rather than /system/media.
To flash manually with Root Explorer, etc. :
1. Download and extract the CWM flashable boot animation file below
2. In the extracted file, navigate to /data/local and copy the bootanimation.zip file
3. Navigate to the root of your SD card
4. Go to /data/local and paste the file there OR alternatively /system/media, overwriting any old boot animation (please backup your old boot animation if you wish to revert soon). Please note that /data/local is the first place that the OS looks for a boot animation. Any boot animation placed in /data/local will override a boot animation placed in /system/media.
5. Reboot and enjoy
This SHOULD work on any device with a 1280x720 resolution. If you flash this on phone other than a Galaxy S III, you do so at your own risk.
Please note: Image in OP is not actual size due to resizing issues. The actual boot animation will appear slightly smaller. Enjoy!
Updated OP with a gif image for those who are curious
Thanks. It's a nice stock bootanimation, but too minimal for my tastes.
Gotta have more flair! A version of this with extra flairy fire flares would be trippy.
(And thanks for putting it in /data/local instead of overwriting /system/media, which is where I put mine too. Wish more bootani packagers would do this (and specify this).)

Hey no problem we're not on Android version 1 anymore so /data/local seems like the best place to put it . I wish I had enough time and the software to alter this image with some blue flames. That would be amazing. Anyone up for the challenge? lol
Flashed the file from recovery, it put it /data/local. But still get the stock AT&T animation. I think I need to rename the file in /system/bin and create a symlink to it from /data /local.
Well that didn't work, neither did renaming the file in /system/bin and copying over the bootanimation file.

Hmm...good thinking on the symlink. What kernel are you on and this might be a stupid question but did you try removing the Samsung boot first? It's in an odd propriotary format. It's weird. I never thought a boot animation would be so difficult to implement universally on this device. I've never had any issues on other devices. I've been using triune ii and my animations seem to work. I was also on ucalh9 with an insecure kernel and boot animation support I made. I'm scratching my head on this one. I saw your post on the terminal commands on the other thread too. I'm replying here for both. Thanks for taking a look at this. Hopefully we can figure something out here.

Kernel version is 3.0.8-704434-user. I didn't touch the samsung files because I wasn't sure if that would hose my phone. Just renamed the bootanimation file.
Does it matter which version I'm on as far as ICS or JB?

No it should not as long as your kernel supports a custom boot animation. Almost all custom kernels support it. This has worked great for me, but if you're nervous, it flashes to /data/local on your sd card. If there's not a bootanimation.zip there already, it won't overwrite your current boot animation and you should be able to just delete it from /data/local if it doesn't work or you don't like it. So basically you can safely flash this without any risk of damaging anything regardless of ICS or JB. It works for me, but I definitely can't guarantee anything at this point. I've had some difficulties with bootanimations on the S3 for some reason. Let me know if it works out for you.

Interesting! Can you explain why? It could definitely explain why some users are having issues now, but I never had this problem before on other phones. I'm curious as to what's different.
Worked great on CM10 ! Now I can finally have matching boot animations on my Nexus 7 and my GS3! Thanks bro.

That's a good question. I've never ran a rom that putting it in /data/local didn't work. But it's so strange that some ROM's work that way. In my opinion, putting it in /data/local is safer AND you can keep your old bootanimation as a backup in /system/media. I'm definitely curious as to why it's different as well.
This is the boot animation from the ICS Nexus and is by far my most favorite boot animation ever. Works perfectly on GS3. Follow OP instructions for manual install

If it has a kernel that supports boot animations it should yes. But you'll need to manually install that one.
will i have to reflash this boot animation everytime i install a new CM10 nightly?

I do experience a lag too sometimes in the past. But it is now running smoothly since I format all of my data and install the newest version of my Rom (Ressurection Remix v 5.4.1). One thing to blame for the slowness I suppose is the amounts of apps which starts at startup. But I don't really know cause I'm not a dev. I'm just a pure noob.

Thank you Rommel! I'll try to find one that matches this bootanimation or maybe make one if there isn't IF I have a spare time in the future.
Update: Been searching on Google and can't found anything related to adding boot sound in CM 12 (I'm not using stock rom). Maybe you can point me to a specific tutorial?

in adding boot sound try this but u need and .mp3 sound that u want
1) rename the .mp3 that u want into Power_On.ogg and if u want to add power off sound u do similar with power on
2) copy it into system>media>audio>ui
3) give a right permission rw-r-r (or u may copy the other permission in the other .ogg)
4) reboot ur phone
Help me

You have to give the cm file manager root acces in the settings/General settings/ access mode.
Default cm setting is only internal and external memory.
See also the instructions from in the OP (2. Move it to your /system/media directory using Root Explorer/CM FIle Manager (make sure Root access is enabled))
it won't in stock rom since it is in .zip format ..whereas stock boot animation is in .qmg format
Where was this Bootanimation all along?!
I love it!
PS. Could you make the bootanimation longer, or change the loop in the end? It (bootanimation) finishes and loops awkwardly between 2 static looking images until my phone finishes boot... please that would be great
Awesome !!
