HTC Digital Compass - Windows Phone 7 General

Is out in the Marketplace and makes use of the digital compass built into the phones. From my understanding the API to access the digital compass is not out to developers, but the manufacturer has made this program available to HTC phones.
Works pretty well on my Arrive.

Yah, read about it this morning and got to downloading... strange enough its not available in the HTC Hub yet.

Looks good, works great.

Installed - looks great. I'll have to try it out when I go out later.

Have it on my Arrive - Works. Although, every time I launch the app, I have to do a figure 8 to calibrate it.

it's a bit of a garbage application though. sure it's a compass, but they could of at least provided the same functionality of the Maps application. It has directions, but you have to move the pin yourself, rather than being able to input an address.

Only had to do it the first time app started.

[XAP] LG ScanSearch (patched for all models)

Hey everyone
Saw a few people were looking for a patched version of the ScanSearch application that ships with LG phones (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=912217). I popped open reflector and modified it enough that it now launches on my non LG device.
[LINK]
@mods: if you want me to take the link down, please edit this out. PM me if the link disappears
Cheers
Oh, just so you know, you will have to use this tool to install it. You will need to tick the "Replace assembly signatures" and "Remove DRM" options for it to work correctly.
now thats a great app, thanks

All apps I have tested yesterday on my OMNIA 7.
Deploy them with Xap Deployer V1.4 and mark the checkboxes...
Can you patch Panorama Shot too?
hm, it always direcing to east is bad..but otherwise its a great app...perhaps you can fix the issue of it always facing east?
Yes in scan search, compass does not work on hd2 hd7. stays in one direction.
Should be possible to make some kind of bridge that intercepts the calls to the non-existent LG driver and return it meaningful compass data, right? I don't quite have the knowledge to do it myself, but if you can mess with it enough so that it doesn't check if it's on an LG phone, it should be possible to direct it at a different DLL...
I don't get it, it's missing all the features but one.
The app can also scan CDs, books, movie posters, bar codes, etc. and none of that is here. It should have a list of icons on the left hand side to toggle between these, yet when installed on HD7 and Focus, it's all gone (I have LG Quantum too, so I can compare).

This functionality might have been implemented in an update? The only XAP I got to patch was the v1.0.0.0 ripped from the ROM. If you have a newer XAP, and post it, I'll be all to happy to update my site and post.
Strike that, I did patch the latest version. Will look into it.
Patched it, download from the same URL as before. It was a carrier check, meaning that only certain US Carriers could access those features. Now granted all devices the same supportedFeatures value.
If someone has a way of getting the orientation of other devices, I'm happy to give it a go, see if I can tweak it to a degree.
doesnt work, additional features are still not available for barcodes etc.
won't install on my focus
There's a Samsung Compass Homebrew library out there, which might be usable for this app with a bit of hacking. I've never tried it, though. Download the source for the "Functional Webserver" and it's in there.
as there is a htc compass app out now there, too.
someone interested in making a scansearch app with support for all devices?
ScanSearch is nice... Panorama shot is man oh man... so much better. I would say of the bunch its is the best... Also I get a manifest error...

why is none else able to code such thing...

Works on my Dell Venue Pro....
Thanks : D
Edit: it loads, but it lok like it hasn't got access to the compass, because moving the phone does not move the compass in the scansearch app...

A-to-B (GPS turn by turn Navigation - FREE!!!)[MOD EDIT: READ MY POST!]

Just found this on the marketplace and I have to say... pretty awesome. This is what WP7 was missing. Although its clearly in the beta stage it is pretty good for a V 1.0.
A-to-B is a Turn-by-Turn application built to demonstrate some of the capabilities of the ArcGIS API for Windows Phone. Warning: The application is meant for demonstration purposes only! Do not rely solely on the suggested routes or instructions given by this application. Features: - Turn-by-turn routing. Sound notification when a turn is coming up. - Add often used destinations as favorites. - List of recent destinations. - "3D view" when in navigation mode with easy accessible "zoom in/out" buttons. - 2D Map for browsing the map supporting pinching, panning etc, and pick new destination by touch'n'hold on the map. - Easy accessible "Recalculate" button if you go off the route and need a new route from your current location (because of service restrictions, the app is not allowed to do this automatically). - Routes all over US (support for Europe coming in a future version). - Worldwide map (detail may vary).
You can read more about and get the marketplace download link here
Nice find I'll have to check it out.
And so I just did. I've been playing with this for an hour not bad, not bad at all I'm going to have it set up in the car on the way into work. I'll post how it does on the highway. But it gave the correct route that I take. But I want to see how it does when I'm actually driving.
Morton you made one very nice app wit a few minor tweeks this thing will rock well done dir well worth the effort

Here's hoping for a UK map!
finally...very good
awesome find I can almost retire my Tilt2
Keep it coming guys, honestly I don't research the app market because I can get all reviews and such here at XDA
This indeed looks fantastic. One question though:
Which map is it actually using? This one has the outlines of every single house or building in my neighborhood and it is VERY accurate. I really like it.
Will it support pinch to zoom?
Partial support in the UK
Hi all
I have installed this on my phone in the UK as a trial. It works and in map mode I reasonable moving 3D map like any normal Sat-Nav. There is no car/arrow on the road to indicate precisely where I am, but the basic mechanics. It can't find any addresses in the UK so I guess that's not yet supported on the server side, but this application clearly has huge potential.
I think whoever gets there first with a fully functioning turn-by-turn sat nav in the marketplace is clearly on to a massive winner.
Cheers
andrew-in-woking
On US 95 in MA I, had an arrow up showing my car. it had all the off ramps and had my destination pegged down perfect. Also there is a speed indicator I was doing 70 mph, it had me doing 71 I can handle that. Like said before, it could use a few tweaks here and there. But overall this Nav app is darn good.
It was pretty nice and accurate getting me to work this morning, but it couldn't figure out my home address. Kept on sending me to weird parts of town.

Maybe this sounds stupid, but how do you know you were doing 70mph? Using your car's speedometer? In which case, have you had it manually recalibrated? Usually a car's speedometer is not accurate (though it normally shows that you're going faster than you actually are).
I'm going to download this now, though I'd be interested in maps of UK and Australia, so I'm not sure how useful it will be to me yet.

Please release this for the UK - awesome stuff!!!!!

Yes using my cars speedometer, and no I have not had it calibrated.
Hi all, it really looks amazing.. Is there any way I can see how it works when i am in Europe? I just want to see something like preview - e. g. select two destinations in USA and than see how it goes. Thanks
Fact of the day! - Generally, Sat-Nav's register a more accurate Speed than the average Car's Speedometer. Speedometer's are configured at manufacturing to register a faster speed than what the car is actually going, this is to compensate for Tyre wear and other wear-and-tear happenings that all cars suffer from over time.
What I have noticed about this so far as that if I'm zoomed in relatively close.. not SUPER close mind you, but maybe 2 or 3 zoom levels back from the closest zoom, that it doesnt actually register the map, says map data not yet available... shows the route the of the road... the path but not the surround streets, weird. This only happens in certain area's of the city I live in too, not all over. Its like the map data just isnt there which I find odd. Its not like its loading a satelite photo so I dont know why it would do this. I tried xmaps from the marketplace the other day and it didnt have this problem. Id understand if it was a satelite image as you cant zoom in close to those sometimes, I used to have that issue in google maps where you would zoom in and it would just say you were too close.
Otherwise I LOVE this thing and am so happy I found it in the market the other day. Just an awesome APP

I noticed the Arrow is there, but hidden by the info at the bottom of the screen. Hopefully, an adjustment will fix that.
Also, Morten Nielsen's other App 'GuidePost' is pretty cool too!
Finally! Free TbT voice nav on WP7!
Guys, WP7 looks to become the leader of smartphones. The system is the best there is and now the features are appearing...albeit slowly.

Thanks for the heads up. Any differences you noticed compared to "regular" version?
Save your money and buy something that's worth it. CoPilot is worst navigation system I have ever seen!
I bought the full European version for £29.99 instead of £60.
It does annoy me that the USA Version is only £2 for Standard and £6 for Premium!
Navigon is a sack of sh1t compared to this (IMHO).
Each to their own, personally I think it rocks and for the money you cannot complain!
I bought CoPilot v8 at the beginning of May, when I got my S2. It cost me just over £20.
ALK have confirmed there is no upgrade path and all they will provide existing users (along with everyone else) is this 7 day, 50% discount.
After having a quick look at what this new 'Premium' versions offers, I think I'll be saving my money and wait for v10.
A reviewer wrote:
Stick with V8. Glad this wasn’t an upgrade!! V9 seems to have forgotten what SATNAV is for. Suggested routes are ridiculous. Every route needs editing, not good when at the roadside and all you want is to get from A-B. No routing prefs Shortest, Quickest etc. Road prefs if not on neutral make things worse. No town\city location display. Often looses gps fix. Display on Wildfire has grey pixelated areas and chopped off icons. ‘Not fit for purpose’ in many areas. Needs to be fixed – quick or Refund please!

Maps for the region your purchased are free. E.g. I bought UK and Ireland version (those maps are free). I can additionally purchase maps for other regions (e.g. Western Europe).
Regarding the voice, screenshot attached.
Overall this version is great. The UI is epic compared to the last version.

That is a very fair review I would say.
As for the maps, that may be true, I am not sure, but I don't believe it is. I think the cost of the Copilot app includes the maps.
There are additonal 'bolt ons' available within v9.0 which cost extra. I have paid for Traffic (£9.99 per annum), I would have paid for Fuel Prices (4.99 per annum) but it is not available in the UK presently.
The best part for me is the upgraded registration process. In v8.0 it was a nightmare and if you wanted to change from one device to another, it could quite literally make your brain bleed. It is easy in v9.0.
Overall, I am very happy, I am just jealous that I do not live in the US where this is extremely cheap. The cost of maps must be less for Copilot over there I guess.
Someone told me that CoPilot do not integrate with Android Contact
This should mean that it isn't possible to invoke navigation from an Contact address ... is this a fact (or a joke)?
If you're talking about selecting a contact in Android's Contacts app & navigating to it via CoPilot, that doesn't seem to be an option -- instead of opening CoPilot, it takes you into Google Maps. It may be the case that Android doesn't provide the hooks to allow third-party apps to be called from within their Contacts app; Google wrote the OS, so they set the rules.
However, you can select your Android contacts from within CoPilot.

Android do provide the hooks to allow third-party apps to be called from within their Contacts app. IGO My Way is one confirmed example.
Is Copilot as good or reliable as tomtom? Tbh, I still find myself using my htc touch diamond for satnav since it has tomtom navigator on it. Honestly, all the other satnavs around are crap from what I've tried. They all have some fancy features or graphics which are nice or better in some way (like I use google satnav sometimes and it speaks actual road names which is cool, but no speed camera warnings) but overall, tomtom is the only one I trust and feel comfortable with and which holds my hand down every road. Can't wait till tomtom hits android.

Thanks for the correction -- good to know that. I've been on Android for only a month or so, after having used WinMo since Windows CE 1.0 back in 1996.
BTW, I've seen several people mention IGO My Way on Android. However, I can't find any reference to it on Android Market, nor can I find an Android version on the IGO website. How does one get the software?

Problems - just me?
Hello all
I'm having real problems with mine at the moment. It locks up constantly usually when a planning a route but often when navigating and sometimes it hangs the phone too.
Mine's a very standard installation, not rooted and the phone is stable otherwise.
It might just be me but if not I'd say it's a long way from being release worthy.

Android user on WP7: Initial thoughts.. and concerns

After playing briefly with WP7 I decided i wanted to try it out more officially so I picked up a Focus from cowboom and after 4 days with it here's my thoughts.. I am coming from a CM7 Captivate BTW
Hardware is super nice, screen is gorgeous, battery life rocks, and the gps is dead on (something im not used to on my captivate).. no complaints here at all
Software is great to use, I have 1st gen and ZuneHD so I knew id love that.. the transitions and effects are fantastic touches... but
A. maps is garbage: couldnt even find a store one block from me ( gave results in MS instead) still trying to find a good replacement app.
B. is there a way to have keyboard vibrate when on silent?
C. Only microsoft would install updates one at a time and restart over and over between.
D. Google Calenders wont sync right, I have several calenders i use from my account but it only shows me the default one. Any fix for that?
over all im really impressed, still trying to find apps to replace/match my android setup... but now i really want to be able to dive deeper into the hacks but it seems Chevron option has disappeared.. for now..

@D - I don't think is possible still.
@A - are you using bing?
@C - yes.
@B - i'm not sure, but I would imagine so?
So basically I have no idea. And I've had it for over a year.
A. Bing is getting better, but it is still no replacement for Google (at least for me). For example, I have two Costco stores in my area. One is about 4 miles from my house, the other is about 20 miles. Until about a month ago, searching for Costco would always try to direct me to the more distant one, even though the closer one has been around much, much longer. (Disclaimer - of course, I have no trouble finding Costco, but it was a good barometer of the incompleteness of Bing data in my area).
B. I don't know of any way to turn on haptic feedback from the keyboard when the phone is silenced.
C. Yeah, I suppose the update process still has room for improvement.
D. Contrary to Microsoft's official statements that only your primary Google calendar is supported, you can sync secondary and shared calendars on your phone. Here is a link with instructions (they are a bit arcane, but they do work - I have three calendars syncing to my phone right now):

Android update doesnt delete anything flashing between roms you have to but that is what TiBu is for.
when i go to m.google.com/sync from the phone it doesnt have anything there to select. Can this work from IE, the directions in prev post say Safari but i feel that was copied from iphone directions.
No, the instructions are very clear. You must use Safari (from your PC), because it allows you to set the user agent to appear as an iOS device. It will not work from Firefox or IE. Again, follow the instructions exactly as described in the article I linked and you will see your calendars.
[Edit]
I think I see the source of confusion. It says to use Safari on your "device". For "device", in that case, substitute "PC". So, to sum up:
1 - Make sure you have set up a Google account on your phone to sync your primary calendar, and that it is working properly.
2 - Follow the Safari instructions on your PC to find and enable your secondary calendars (and be sure to remember to click the "Save" button on the page).
3 - Force a manual sync of your Google account on the phone to confirm that the additional calendars are syncing.

I wouldn't go as far as saying that Bing maps is garbage. It tends to find everything I'm looking for in my area and in metro St Louis when I was there back in August. However it can't seem to find the pizza hut in my town that opened in June but neither can google maps or the pizza hut app.

Ah, well I suppose you can either shell out money for a full blown GPS program offered like Telenav, or Navigon; buy a chevronlabs unlock token and put nokia drive on your phone; or wait for Telenav's html5 solution that'll probably be out in a few months.

navigation app

i have tried the navigation on the htc one x
its good but there is a 30 day trail on it so i think that after that you havew to pay for it
and im not impressed by google maps
on my htc desire i had installed sygic
but that wont work on my one
anyone some suggestions?
I use Sygic, works fine. One of the best in my opinion. Just buy it in the market so you have the latest version.
that doesnt work on my htc one x tried that but im trying again maybe after custom rom it will work thx anyway
I use Co-Pilot and I love it. Problem is the normal price is a bit steep. I got mine in a half price sale else I'd have never gone for it. Glad I did though.

I also use Co-Pilot Live Premium. I got mine at a special upgrade price when I moved from Co-Pilot Live 8. For me it's great. I got a free map upgrade at Christmas too and they have just offered 12 months free Activetraffic that's meant to automatically re-route you if there's traffic on your current planned route.

Assuming you've purchased Aura, just log into the sygic support site and request your activation code be reset. This normally happens within 48h, you can then re-enter the code and activate on your new handset.
Cost of co-pilot and sygic is similar at the minute £33 for copilot and £40 for sygic, both are good but I prefer copilot - used the old version while travelling around Europe and had zero problems with it or its routing. Sygics routing seems to be idiosyncratic at times but their customer support is exemplary.
For me the best gps program is Ndrive 11

thanks
I haven't really found an app that has given me complete satisfaction. I like Google Navigation but sometimes I cannot get is running when network is weak or temporarily unavailable.
Aura Sygic: The best UI. I like the options. But the routing is what I did not like. More than half the time, it gave me some awkward routes when there were more convenient routes were still available. That was a real deal breaker for me. And thankfully, Sygic offers a trial period unlike Co-Pilot and Ndrive which you get stuck with after Google's 15 minute refund windows closes.
Co-Pilot: I like the fact that it displays which side of the road my destination is when I reach there (not always accurate though, but useful for my part time job as a pizza delivery driver). However, it sometimes tells me to enter a one way street from the wrong direction. I don't like Pico TTS Engine that it uses for text to speech voice direction so I used the normal voice guidance which was less mechanical than Pico although it did not speak street names. I wish it supported SVOX.
Ndrive 11: Bought it just a couple of days ago. I don't like the UI (maps) as much as Aura or even Co-Pilot. The 3D view looks more or less like 2D. But it's routing appears to be the better than the other apps I mentioned above. I wish it clearly indicated which side of the street the destination was upon arrival. It does indicate on the map itself with an icon but it is not so easy to make out. And there no TTS voice available for turn by turn voice guidance. I wish these third party apps spoke out street names like Google Navigation.
So, I'd be happy if there was an app that had maps like Aura, features like Co-Pilot, accurate routing like Ndrive and superior TTS voice guidance like Google Navigation.
I use waze. It's good
Sygic works perfect on my One X, use correct xml-file and 2010 k* for not going to demo mode.
I would say Navigon is good.

which Sygic version are you using? I'm getting notifications it doesn't work on my european ONE X because of the lack of hardware 3D acceleration.

doesn't matter, newer version works like a charm.
I've been using Navfree from the PlayMarket, and it works very well for a free navigationapp.
I'm looking for a navigation app as well for my HOX. Google Navigation isn't even enabled in my region (Malaysia), and I've used Garmin on my previous phone before and am very used to Garmin. What's the closest to Garmin that is available on Android and has Malaysian maps?
One thing that I really REALLY don't like about the Navigation app is that it doesn't tell you whether to keep on the left or right lane when there is a small split in the road unlike Garmin.
XDA does not condone the use of warez, so please don't ask for it.
Thread cleaned.
+1 Navfree
