Simple:
-Pros: Get the most of Microsoft's hidden/closed API's.
-Cons: Microsoft hates it. They don't want you to do those API's.
> There are no Cons with be able getting more out of the phone.
Also, hacking the WP7, there are requirements that you know C++ well OR use someones else's API.

Hello. I'm sure the majority of this site know what Spotify is. And I've discovered some great stuff, that maybe could be ported to a WinMo device.
I'm really, really bad at coding, so I don't know if this is possible, but hey, why not, it's worth a try, right?
So, to the subject. Some Swedish hackers have hacked spotify and made a program to connect to their servers and stream music. It's all opensource, altough no GUI is available.
So my request is, port this program to a WinMo device, and make a nice graphical interface!
Here is the link to the program.

So, I understand that there is an unofficial client for android too.. anyone working on something for wimo?

Yeah. I've converted it to WinMo (C#). I will build a nice GUI and then release it as open source. Stay tuned.
Can you...

Just got this through on Twitter! He has only had them for an hour and a half and he has them both rooted!
Fantastic work!
What's the background of this person? Any evidence yet?
EDIT: He probably knows what he is doing
Congratulations Paul, I'd love to see how he did it!

He made some famous Roms for example for the I7500. So I say it is definitely not joke!

Hi,
Sorry to be such a noob but what are the advantages of rooting?
And if I was thinking of doing it, why would I?
Sorry again ... I am a newbie
@Raminder1992
Plenty of advantages to root but in order to understand them and the whole process you need to search the forums with reference to other handsets to give you an idea, if we answer your questions it only leads to more new members posting basic questions in what is a development forum that currently is hanging on what happens next with the desire rooting process.
In other words click the search button and take some time to read or you'll just annoy those of us that desperate for progress on this handset.

Simple:
root=administrative rights to the system........ basically the same thing in your computer when you have administrative account...
normal mode is like a normal windows user account where you have possibility to (un)install software but you cannot change the system
So the final piece in the puzzle is about to be delivered. I'm buying it!

there are many, many reasons, but to give a few examples. firstly, those of us not in regions where google allow us to access the paid apps, we can change that by a few parameter settings, we can also change where we're from, if a developer wanted to block out our region, for whatever reason. after that, when you look even further, there are plenty of apps on the market that require root to work properly, there's one that allows you specify what apps launch on startup, there's a firewall that allows you control what connects through your data plan, there's a flashlight that keeps your camera flash on and many, many more. without root, these things don't work properly, because they don't have the right permissions.
for me, the reasons above are good, but not the main reason. for me, where I work, we use a LEAP wireless security system that (I think) all Android devices can connect to, without a problem. unfortunately though, the Android developers haven't added that option to the wireless config GUI. this isn't a problem if I get root, because then I can just edit the config file and change one line. without root, though, I don't have wireless connection during a good part of every day, which sucks.

Wow, this means that it could be ported huh?
I believe so, it has all the drivers in there if someone knows how to build it all from the source. Did you download it and look at it yet?

Nope, I'm pretty much useless when it comes to this kind of stuff. Just hope that some knowledgeable people can see if porting is possible.

My company has a mobileconfig that they have built that allows users to log into our VPN from the iPhone. Unfortunately my company only has this setup for the iPhone and not for Android. Is there an app or something that I can do to convert the mobileconfig to Android?

I know I know, but want to see if anyone has found a solution since I first asked.
Did you just quote yourself?
I'm not sure, hopefully you'll find your answer. Did you try to Google it?

Of course I did. Doesn't seem like it's possible.
Hi! Due to my lack of computing skills, i do not know how to make an app from scratch. I want to make an application that does certain calculations and all i need is a few formulas or taskbars. The ones you paste in certain information and you get a result. And perhaps also a place for graphs to be pasted. I have all calculations etc. I only need the visuals, design, you name it. Any programs where you can do the design without coding or anything like it? - Or can they be learnt rather easily, these few things?
Regards Thomas
You could have a look at the App Inventor: http://appinventor.mit.edu/
First of all, I want to say: Coding is easy to learn. Why don't start learn it? It will be much more beneficial to you now and in the future. And XDA-Developers' members (including me) will gladly help you to do that.
But if you still don't want to learn coding, I can only say that you CAN create application, though your application will not be the same as you want it. Or if you think that you don't have to learn coding, but your app is essential, you can hire app developers to do that for you.
The final choice is yours, I'm just giving you suggestions/advice. No offense, ok?

I recommend the Head First Java book.
Then read some Android tutorials. But you need to learn Java first.
To learn programming Android, you have to understand how to use Java. It's very easy, and there're many tutorials on how to get started. But you have to focus ONLY on mobile development. If you want to learn other things (such as web apps or desktop apps), you can, but it will slowing your progress in learning mobile development.
After you mastered basic of Java, you can start to learn from d.android.com. If you have any questions, just ask it in XDA politely. We'll help you if we can. We hope that you enjoy your learning. :highfive:
Not for novice, but excellent books:
B. Eckel "Thinking in Java"
J. Gosling "Java Language Specification"
And ofc. android documentation.
