First off I'm new to XDA and loving it so far, lots of info on here. Anyways I have been reading and reading and reading through all the different threads on rooting and installing roms on my G2 and STILL don't feel comfortable enough to do it on my own. I just don't trust myself and plus their is just so many and I don't know which one to choose. I will gladly pay someone a reasonable price to walk me through the steps maybe on the phone or something. If anyone is interested please let me know. I have been wanting to root my phone for awhile now...

Thanks a lot for helping me out man!!! Wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but again thanks for helping me through the process successfully!!
I felt the same way when i decided to root my phone and this site gave me pretty good instruction on how to do it.
This is what i used to root my phone.
http://theunlockr.com/category/howto/android_how_tos/htc-g2-how-tos/
There are steps to follow, videos to go along with the steps, and links to all the files you will need.
Just make sure to watch and read everything a couple times before attempting.
Good luck in your rooting endeavors.
Isnt it great when u finally get root. Its like a new day is dawning

dont be scared...if you can read, you can root. i did visionary and gfree method on device, because for some reason i cant get adb to work no matter how many times i read it over and over. but i have done 2 G2's now and both went flawlessly with gfree method on device.

i have some knolege..ive hacked my palm pre and iphones before but android is alot harder...
thanks to anyone that can help me!
if no one can help you, i wouldn't give up hope- i'm guessing someone will put a lot of those steps together to get closer to a 1 (or maybe 3) click solution.
this is a very early root solution- it will be improved upon over time.

i hope so ...as of right now theres too many steps and i could easily mess up on one of them... i hope there is a actual 2.2 root...not a downgrade to 2.1 then root

Maybe they will update simple root soon, it is a fairly simple and painless process, but I definitely wouldn't give up, just relax, take a breather, remove any files it may have on your phone/sd from previous attempts and try again.
I would offer you help, but I'm already rooted and haven't really looked to far into the process, but I'm sure your not the only one having difficulties if you search around the pertaining threads.

Alex,
I can appreciate your excitement, but its probably not a good idea to let someone do this for you. Just imagine what might happen if something goes wrong. You wouldn't have the background to be able to fix it yourself, and you could end up with a 700 dollar paperweight that Sprint tech support would laugh in your face if you tried to warranty it.
Just give it time and be patient. Read, re-read, and triple read every post in the root thread to see where others are getting hung up and take notes! In the end, you'll feel much better about gaining the knowledge yourself!
ROMs are meant as tools for the learned, not for the inexperienced. This is why they aren't supported by Sprint and HTC under warranty. You can easily damage your phone or at least render it temporarily useless if you don't know what you are doing.
As was said before me, these things will get easier in time. Just take the extra time to learn about how all this stuff works. Don't hesistate to ask questions about your journey learning to fish!
Good luck!
+1 Yeppers, nothing like a good old sense of accomplishment...

Just did it myself. Make sure to completely follow all the instructions as stated and it's actually pretty easy.
Hi, let me start by apologizing for my ignorance but ive always been in love with phones for i dont know how long and i finally have a good one specifically the evo and even though i love phones i no little about the software but i want to learn. can anyone point to the start i want to learn rooting flashing ROMs and kernels the works im not so much interested in developing but that might change once im more knowledgeable in the whole process im just some high school kid so my tech knowledge right now is pretty much zero please help i no everyone here started somewhere so can u tell me where i just want to make my phone as good as possible
Let me ask you this: What software version is on your phone right now? 2.1 or 2.2?
im running 2.2 on my evo
Take a gander at the development forum. There is a guide that was posted just a couple of days ago about rooting 2.2. Great timing for you since this method was only just discovered.
A piece of advice...after you obtain root access to your phone, be cautious about taking anymore updates from the carrier as these updates often break your root access. Every update is usually followed by a rooted version here in the forums sometimes on the same day or before.
Welcome!
Oh..and be sure to do a search in the forums for any issues you may have before posting a question to the forums. Chances are it has already been addressed...unless you enjoy getting flamed.

That's what Unrevoked Forever is for, I thought? But still, just because you put on a Kevlar vest doesn't mean you should go around taking shots to the chest. Hey, that rhymes! Copyright.

LOL! Except we're Android people, so in the spirit of openness, I demand that you make that quote 100% free and available. (kinda like how people bash the unrevoked team about not giving away their methods...)

True, but wouldn't be plausible for an OTA to be released that turned the security permissions back on and plugged the exploits for rooting? That's why I just say be cautious. UF probably will work "forever" but it's no reason to be careless. Sticking with the rooted ROMs is just a safer bet.
So if you don't want to loose root, give those Sprint OTAs the boot.
Yeah...I'm not copyrighting that. It sucks! lol!

thanks for all ur help i love this site so full of smart helpful people
Just wondering cause I seen my friend with his CM7 root and loved it. I've been researching for a couple of days now including reading the wiki but want a clear cut choice from someone who has rooted and I want to make sure I use the newest safest method.
I followed the Wiki http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD on this site about a week ago and it worked for me. Wasn't too hard but you should follow the instructions to the letter. Read and re-read and then make sure you have the ability to do all the steps before you actually start. There is nothing scarier than watching your phone get stuck in a boot and thinking you have bricked it!
Having said that, I'm running CM 7 RC2 now and it's made my phone so much better.
And if you don't have ADB, this was helpful: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865685
I see nothing you developed in this thread dude...do you not know what Q&A means????? Just in case its questions and answers. Sorry for being harsh but this **** is so easy to avoid you kind of deserve it

Was also looking for an all in one guide but no luck. They have it on Desire HD it was so simple and easy to follow. the wiki was fine though. If you found one hope you could share it. I'm not even sure if I missed something.
How did he post here with only 8 posts??
Thanks Tangiers for the info but to Spastic 909 thank you for being useless dude I asked for advice in the wrong spot sorry. I wonder if I had posted in the right spot if you would have even posted anything I'm guessing not. +1 for the Troll then I guess.
You are welcome. Good luck and don't be put off by it looking complicated. I am no expert but managed to do it without any problems.
And once you have root, a whole new world of fun opens!

It's really up to you, it isn't that risky if you have enough knowledge to do everything exactly according to the guides.

No offense, but you need a little knowledge to root and flash a custom rom. This isn't meant for the average user. It feels like everyone who gets an android phone nowadays (as it's becoming a more popular OS) want's to root and flash a custom rom as soon as they have in their hands without even knowing what it really means. The information to do all this is available here on this forum in form of guides which in most of the cases are quite extensive. If you want to root and flash a custom rom etc, you will have to do some reading on your own.
AFAIK this forum isn't here to hold the hands of android virgins as they try modify their phones without even knowing what a command prompt is. Almost every day someone new wants step by step instructions for this and for that even though there are good instructions out there. This forum is meant for people with some experience and knowledge that want to get the most out of our phones. New members are ofcourse welcome, but please, do some studying on your own too.
I was so scared to root my first phone last week. I sat for three hours reading guides over and over again to make sure I new what I was doing and I havent regretted doing it.
Too often I come across threads like this, if your not sure then you probably don't need to root, yet! If you decide to root read the stickies in the development thread, and don't say you havent got time to read a 100 page thread it'll be a lot quicker than fixing your DHD when it's buggered up
Hi ghostofcain
I hope you do not take offence to my reply.

I DIDN'T need to downgrade first and simply followed the video on the bottom of this page.
(Youtube version)
I then simply installed CM7 rom via Rom Manager.
(I am rarely sick but I had been quite ill and in a lot of pain for a few days which was a shock to the system, and when I did get better, I had the mindset that nothing matters at all.) It's not easy for most folk to feel that way. Life is a game. Nothing ventured nothing gained.
Unless you are unhappy or bored with Sense or the performance of your phone - there isn't too much reason to root in my opinion.

Best thing i ever did. I had a jailbroken iphone before i got my Desire HD so rooting was the first thing i looked at when i got my HD, getting rid of the branding was the main reason but then i realized how many Roms were out there and now its hard to choose which one to use :

There's a lot of changes and benefits if you root your phone and install a custom ROM... First, there are a lot of custom ROMs, for any taste. MIUI imitate the iOS system, with the liberty of Android OS, for example, and RevoHD leave the original SENSE ROM, with improvements of course.
Then, custom ROMs have some interesting tweaks, like zipalign, the ads removing and a better management of the RAM.
To finish, I did it myself (running the MIUI ROM by Rey) and I have no regrets. After reading a few tutorials it was easy as ABC !
Like it was said before It's up to you, I dont intend to convince anyone, but If you wanna do it, go doing some searches. This forum has some tutorials, and anyone, even a noob can understand them.

If it's literally out of the box not rooted then here's the guide I used when I first got my phone last christmas.

It looks like the person has been updating his guide so the info should be up to date.

then see the above post for root guide from where you can begin ur wonderful journey!

I will be honest, not trying to be a jerk...seriously! If you don't understand the stickies, or guide above.....then leave it alone for now. And read read study read. When you understand those stickies and guides, then have at it. As soon as you get a recovery flashed.....nandroid!! Always have a nandroid back up on your phone....can save lots of grief!!!!
If you don't do things like you're supposed to, you'll lose your inheritance and have a paper weight. And not a very good one either....not that heavy.
