[Q] Unanswered things about root

First of all i'm sorry to post more questions about rooting but it seems like no one cares about some problems... i searched so many times on xda and even google advanced search
I have the r800 xperia play...I've been using it for couple of months so i have a lot of apps n stuff. I am running the newest 4.0.A update and i love it but i read i cant flash to 2.3.2,root it with gingerbread then update to 4.0.A cuz its not OTA
so i thought i could do it the unlocking bootloader way but i have a lot of questions so lets start...
-Is there a way to be rooted in 4.0.A,and if there is...do i need a rom or what?
-If I root my phone will i loose all my app data(this is the most important part,i dont want to loose all my perfect games in cut the rope and games like modern combat which have incredibly hard levels)
-When my phone is rooted...will i be able to update it to 2.3.4 and the Ice Cream Sandwich next year,or i would have to load custom roms
-I also noticed that when i uninstall a free app from my phone it disappears from the My Apps tab in The Market so what am i supposed to do if the root wipes all my apps? Write all 60+ of them on a peace of paper?

First off i dont have an unlocked bootloader but i will answer what i can.
1. Someone with an unlocked bootloader will have answer this one but im sure you can.
2. If you unlock your bootloader your phone will be wiped. The only way you would have kept root and all your apps is if your are on 2.3.3 (with a locked bootloader) and are waiting for the xloud update over ota (like i am) But since you have already updated to 4.0.A if you reflashed to 2.3.2 > rooted > ota to 2.3.3 (and wait like me) you will still loose all your apps (since you had to reflash). Best you can hope for is backing up your apps data with titanium backup pro or my backup pro. Then once you are rooted on an unlocked bootloader (or if you have reflashed 2.3.2 > rooted > ota to 2.3.3 with root) you can reinstall the app data.
3. If you unlock the bootloader you can still get updates but you cannot get them from OTA, PC Companion or SEUS (it will brick your phone) you will have to go the development section and a user who has got 2.3.4 (when its out) will post an update package you can use.
4. I have used App List Backup from the market. It saves all your market apps in a list so you can just redownload them and you still get updates e.t.c. Only works with market apps no 3rd party ones. Or even MyAppsList just to create a txt of app names.

Thats what I feared...but doesnt titanium backup require root? Maybe i misread it somewhere and its stuck in my head

LOL yeah sorry my bad. Indeed it does. I think mybackup pro works without root but im not sure if it is 100% reliable. Either way you are gonna have to either loose all your data or gamble saving your app data with my backup pro since rooting on anything after 2.3.2 (with a locked bootloader) does not work.

MyBackup requires root to backup app data I mean hasn't anyone figured out how to save their data...seems to me nobody cares about it
Anyways,provided that somehow i magically manage to save it i would still have to wait for OTA. Any ideas where i can check daily when the update will be available?

lol sigh... something is wrong with me today. I stoped reading as soon i a saw
MyBackup and MyBackup Pro will work on all Android mobile devices, regardless if they have root access or not.

Sorry bout that bud. Probably got your hopes up for nothing I think the arc got their ota update a few weeks after it appeared on SEUS/Pc Companion but who knows its totally up to SE. I dont even think all the countries have got the ota yet for the arc.

You can root without unlocking the bootloader as far as I remember. I believe I used SuperOneClick for it.

That was patched up in 2.3.2 so it doesnt work

I believe that basic Android - unthemed, untouched - does regular backups to Google. Basically, it will backup your app data and your list of apps. When you wipe a phone and log back in, it'll restore the apps and data automatically.
I noticed this myself when I was on my Samsung Galaxy S Captivate. The first time I installed Cyanogenmod 7 on it, it restored a ton of apps on my phone. The touchwiz framework for the Captivate doesn't allow it by default, I believe.
I have not seen this work on the Xperia Play.

Well...if it works on other phones it can work on any other phone running it...right?
I guess someone would have to extract the feature and somehow make an apk

I don't think it's quite that simple. It's most likely completely removed from the framework, so there's no readding an APK.

What your talking about was a feature of froyo, google removed it with gingerbread.

My hopes are being buried deeper and deeper... Ok how about this,that data must exist somewhere on the phones memory right? So if the apps themselves can access and change it,why can't another app or say a computer? Tell me why that won't work...

because the app has the permission to do it, an unrooted user, does not have access to /data/data

Ok this is the last thing i had in mind...SE had some sort of backup app for the arc and it was ported to other xperia phones but whenever i would try to download it from their official page it would show me random html all over the page and now i lost the link..
But when i think about it... SE couldn't do it without root so...it probably just saves something else. Anyway can i root it with unlocked bootloader without loosing data?

Your phone gets wiped when you unlock your bootloader but you can downgrade to a rootable version of android using flashtool without loosing data you can then make a backup, unlock bootloader, flash latest firmware, restore backup

Oh yea...That recovery thing?

Well my original plan was to downgrade do 2.3.2,Gingerbreak and wait for 4.0.A to hit OTA but Mozza2k11 said it would wipe my data

Just ordered my Arc S... Some questions.

I went for a genuine SIM-FREE one (at extra cost), so the bootloader can be unlocked.
What does this mean with regards to getting updates and rooting the device?
Can I download the latest OTA update when I boot the phone, and by doing so, will it lock me out of doing anything? (i'm guessing after taking the latest OTA, I can still request a bootloader unlock?)
I have seen some posts suggesting that once you unlock the bootloader, you will stop getting OTA updates, which would suck, as Android 4.0 is out soon(ish), and I wouldn't want to prevent my phone from being able to get that.
I'm sorta tempted to get the latest OTA and then leave it for a while until I understand the pros and cons of unlocking the bootloader, and rooting the phone.
Sorry to sound like a Newb, but all phones are different, I have a HTC Legend, and know all about that one, ditto for my Asus Transformer, both are rooted with CWM recovery, but only once I worked out what the pros and cons are.

If youve bought one sim-free (and thus unbranded, good call) then you should (as of, like, yesterday, good timing) be able to root without unlocking the bootloader (see this thread for how).
Thus the only reason for you to unlock the bootloader would be when you want to install a custom rom, and if youre running a custom rom youre not really going to be wanting OTA updates blatted on top of them
As far as getting OTA updates when rooted - so far OTA updates have worked fine on rooted arcs (and have maintained root). But, with this new rooting method we dont yet know what the outcome would be with an OTA update. However, when 4.0 rolls around you should still be able to flash it via SEUS unless youve also unlocked the bootloader, which stops SEUS from working. Also - if you do unlock the bootloader DO NOT ACCEPT any OTA updates, this can brick the phone.

Thanks, for the moment, i'll hold off unlocking the bootloader, accept OTA updates and then root it (or should I root it for and then update?)
The unlocking of the bootloader is only really of use when SE stop supporting the phone....

Not really, even while SE continue to support the handset, some people will always prefer to be able to flash custom ROMs - CM7 offers a lot of nice features, some of which Google have actually copied in ICS.

Imo the arc s is a very good phone that needn't be rooted or boot loader unlocked unless you want themed or roms. Now if there was a mod for the stock camera app to give lower compression images, I'd root straight away.

Crapware removal, titanium backup, drocap2, button saviour, root explorer, SE panorama app, appwidgetpicker, transparent dock... the list goes on.
However, not everyone needs/wants these things. Horses for courses innit?

Help with unrooting and relocking bootloader

Hello to anyone who decides to read this, and thank you for taking the time to haha.
I'm new here, and I'm relatively new to the whole rooting and modding scene, although I'm pretty confident in using Odin and various software involved in this, so, hopefully this won't be too complicated.
I have a question about my Note 10.1 2014. I have the WiFi model (P6000), which was bought in China since I was a student there for a year. Now I'm back in England. I flashed my ROM to a UK version so I could use Google Play services and Facebook integration, along with several other features and services which are blocked in China for various reasons. Now, my problem is, I have no real reason to have a rooted device other than for this. I also know I didn't need to root my device to flash the ROM, but I had some problems with my keyboard in China, but I have since solved them and have no use for the root. I want to take advantage of OTA updates since apparently my device should have one, but I can't because I'm rooted. Is it at all possible to unroot and lock the bootloader so I can update, without losing the ROM flash that is making my device run the UK firmware? If so, how would I go about doing this on my device? If it's not possible, is there are method in which I can update my firmware?
Sorry if I'm a little clueless about this stuff, and thanks in advance.

What rom version you're running right now? Do you have a full UK factory firmware 4.4 available?

As for the second question, I'm not entirely sure what you mean? I looked for the firmware for flashing but couldn't find a Android 4.4 version, despite my device telling me I have an available update and the internet saying my device should be updated to 4.4?

OK, you have 4.3 and waiting for 4.4 OTA update. If you open your SuperSU app, then go to settings, scroll down to "Full unroot", select that and it should unroot. After done reboot your device and verify that the SuperSU is no longer in your app draw. I don't know if you modify anything else on your device like build.props or installed any rooted apps, if you do you need to remove them ALL, unfreeze any system apps using Titanium backup and revert build.props back to factory original, BEFORE YOU UNROOT. Once everything done you should be ok to take the OTA update. The OTA update will not erase your data so you should be fine there.

Thanks for the speedy reply. I tried to option within SuperSU, but it seems to have been uninstalling for about 15 minutes with no result. I realised that I froze the stock Samsung keyboard since it overtakes the Google Chinese Pinyin Input when using a keyboard, and I work primarily in Chinese. Could this be the reason why the uninstall seems to have failed or got stuck? Not sure what to do now, oops.

Did you read my instructions?? you must un-freeze all the system apps first before unroot otherwise the OTA may failed. Let it sits for another 10 min then reboot your phone and check to see root has been removed.

Yeah, I did read the instructions. It was just a moment of stupidity on my behalf, completely forgot I'd frozen the stock keyboard. I'll leave a little longer and then reboot.

Well, it seems to have gone a little weird. I have no root access anymore but SuperSU is still installed and my device status is still custom, so the OTA update won't run. I'm guessing I ought to reroot and properly clear out/unfreeze stuff, right? Sorry for being a pain haha...

You need to remove the SuperSu app by go to playstore search for Supersu then you should see the uninstall option. The OTA failed probably because it detected that you have modified the system. You need to think what you did to your system and revert back before try again. I would just use towelroot app and reroot then unfreeze any frozen apps, then uninstall then try again. If you can't remembered what you did and the OTA stills failing, then the next step is use Odin and flash factory firmware either 4.3 or 4.4. Remember to read my instructions before and ask if in doubt before taken any action. After you re-root, make sure you use Titanium to run a full backup of all your userapps. if you don't want to be bother, then just use Odin to flash either 4.3 or 4.4 but you need to re setup and re-download all your apps.

Netflx not working on Tab s4

Recently, I decided to update my rooted tab to the newest firmware, through an application on my Windows PC. After updating, I noticed that Netflix now refuses to work despite the fact I had it working on my previously rooted device. Is there any way to be able to actually get it up and running again?

Have you tried uninstalling the app and reinstalling it?

I just tried that, and as I expected, still met with the same message.

On a rooted device I had before this one, I couldn't get Netflix to work. I went to their site and even made a phone call to find out there is an apk file for rooted devices buried on their site. Seems like I may have had to try a few of them to get one to work. This was probably 3-4 years ago.
Oh, and I had to explain to the guy what "rooted" means and why I wanted to do that!

Netflix is broke. Nobody has fixed it.

Netflix has confirmed to Android Police that since version 5.0, released mid-May, the application relies entirely on Google's Widevine DRM. But it only works if Android is intact.
In practice, the availability of the application depends on the eligibility of your smartphone to SafetyNet, and therefore to Android Pay. So an unlocked smartphone no longer has access to Netflix on the Play Store, even if it meets the requirements of Widevin DRM
But no matter: the application itself always works on smartphones rooted and unlocked, at least for the moment.
If it is already installed, you can continue to enjoy it without doing anything. If it is not, simply install it manually, after downloading the APK from APKMirror

Oneplus 5t security updates vs custom ROM newbie

Hi I've never wanted to root or custom ROM. I read the instructions and they are pages deep and the issues that come up and are discussed in threads have such confusing back and forth discussions using lingo and abbreviations that make my head spin.
However... Oneplus did their last update on my 5t my fourth oneplus phone... With an already old security update.
Is the only way to not throw away a perfectly working, phone with good Ram and a fairly new battery I paid to have installed just months ago?
If I'm wanting to hold on another year or 2 use the only option custom ROMs that contain security updates?
Is there a way to add security updates without a ROM? Or maybe at least just learn to root and then add just updates or is it only in ROMs?
I could probably happily use my phone as is but worried what effect no security updates really is to my use.
I really tried videos on doing so this myself I'm not comfortable if problems happen. Not very techy.
Any help appreciated

Unfortunately you can no longer get security updates once your device is deemed as old.
Your options will be to get an antivirus app on your phone, install a custom ROM (like LOS or pixel exp), or you can get a new phone.
Since you're new to this stuff I highly recommend you just get a new phone or simply install an antivirus.
Not sure which anti virus is better than which. But I'm confident in Avira, McAfee, and Norton. You may want to purchase their plan though.

Personally I think that your company has put an unfair burden on you to run company mail and apps on your personal phone while expecting you to have an updated phone at the same time. An updated phone should have been "given" to you.
That being said, you can actually flash and run a custom rom without root. Root is optional.
Process is as follows: (you'll need a PC for this)
1. Backup ALL your data
2. Unlock the bootloader
3. Install custom recovery and reboot to recovery
4. Wipe cache & system and format internal memory
5. Copy custom rom & gapps to internal memory
6. Flash custom rom & gapps and reboot system

Yes if you install custom ROM you'll have security updates. It doesn't have to be Android 11 and you don't need root to install a custom ROM.
Also make sure to follow a precise guide about it so you don't encounter any issues. Always make a backup even if you're 100% sure you won't need it.
As far as I know mail apps don't check the integrity or do a SafetyNet check, so even if you root or don't it will work fine.
If you mean banking apps then you can install some modules to bypass the check or just completely remove root. Assuming that you rooted the device.

It shows my lack of knowledge never ever did I think you could Flash a ROM without being rooted.

My banking apps working fine without root with crdroid 7.3 and flamegapps. Might work for your company mail app too.
Some roms readily hide bootloader status

I think if you change build.prop to some other phone with recent security patches you can bypass this.

Just for update:
I tried to Root a stock ROM, edit build.prop (security patch date), unroot, and then lock bootloader.
But even if it was a stock ROM, OP5T was not booting.
Booloader was stopping boot since it was detecting a non-stock ROM.
Indeed, I had to unbrick OP5T since I was not possible to unlock bootloader.
So, still not solved

Just edit build.prop and use magisk hide module from magisk manager.

Edit build.prop w/o root and unlock bootloader is not possible...
Moreover, hiding root will not work with more recent android updates and for sure it will not hide unlock bootloader.

Yeah I assumed you would know that you should root first. But seeing you even attempted to lock bootloader after modifying the device, seems I assumed wrong.
Magisk hide is working fine on later android versions like 8+.
