[Q] [POLL] RFS or EXT4 with journaling ON or OFF - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Lets hear the Epic community speak/vote on this matter.
Stock file system (RFS) or "bleeding edge" file system(EXT4 with or without Journaling)?
You be the judge!

ext4 with journaling... I like the speed but don't like corrupt data.

Don't see a poll using the xda app, but journaling on.. ext4

EXT4 with journal ON. Thanks for keeping it on ViperROM! EDIT..FWIW,1449/3283 Smartbench.

Ext4-no journal

EXT4, journaling ON please.

This pole has been done already
My decision is no journaling
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk

If I had to choose between the two, then no journaling. A choice between the two on install would be nice though.

Journaling off,
Just be smart and have titanium back up your stuff, on a schedule...

I would have to say journaling on

I picked journaling on but I'd be interested in knowing how much of a hit it is. Has anyone compared benchmarks?

Why one way or the other why not having a choice.

its disabled for other reasons besides performance. The performance increase isn't that much. Maybe 50-100 points in quadrant. The main reason for journaling being disabled was to save the nandchips. With journaling enabled it writes more to the nandchips and every write decreases the life of the phone. If I remember correctly with journaling enabled the life of the phone decreases drastacly putting us under the life expectencly of rfs. With journaling disabled are phones would last longer then then if we kept rfs

I say the Dev's can do it anyway they want to. No oneis forcing you to flash a rom without journaling, you know the risk. Stick with stock if you don like it.

I'm actually sticking with stock rooted until MIUI or cyanogen come out from now on. I can live without the call log fix and themes
I vote for RFS btw because I always feel like my phone gets progressively buggier when I have ext4

Cm7 question.

Hello XDA, I was wondering if I could see better battery life on cm7. I was getting excellent life on myn's. I had juice defender running too though so maybe if there was something that works for GB?

Use the Tiamat kernel. I'm able to get 19hrs at 55% left, without the sbc kernel. Also there are additional undervolting scripts for it.
1. You've told this before. I just switched to it so that should help. I'm a bit uneducated at UV though.

Nice.
Under volting allows the cpu to draw less power, and still operate. The Tiamat kernel is intially undervolted to I believe 950mv. With the additional scripts, you can drop it further. All devices should be able to get away with 25 or 50mv. The 75 and 100 are more aggressive and may not work for you. Best is to backup your rom, flash the 100 and work your way down. If you get bootloops, or you phone shortly freezes after booting, go 1 step down; you're phone can't handle it then. Here's a link to the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1028322
I'm using Tiamat standard, I'm getting good battery life. I turn off my radios when I'm not using them though.

Ext4 vs yaffs2

Mk so if your a bennchmark ahlic like me you wudve noticed something quadrants scores are low on yaffs2 now anyone who doesnt have quadrant pro wudnt be able to tell they wud prolly blame it on the rom were its the filesystems fault ext4 scores much much much higher in io tests than yaffs2 well the majority of them at least now can someone give me the truth which is faster yaffs2 or ext4 ive given my input now i welcome anybody to give theres. Im just going by what i see ad what i see cntradicts what i know thnx

Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
I'm guessing you haven't used the new quadrant? It shows performance of CPU/2D/3D/Memory/I.O. but scores are a bit lower than before because the test is a bit more accurate. But your right yaffs2 does give lower scores but when actually using it, it's faster.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Exactly. Even though the benchmarks are a little lower you can feel the difference. Quadrant seemed to cater to the I/O of EXT4 and it really boosted the benchmarks. However even if yaffs2 is a little slower you gain everything in having the stability of RFS without worrying about journaling and data corruption.
Benchmark what?
Quadrant?
People still strive after this stuff
Just for kicks highest quad I ever pulled...

That stuff is over my head. But there may be a file system similiar that will make it to the Epic one day. Maybe it will be EXT5 on MTD..who knows. Give it a little time...we have not had MTD for that long yet. Already my phone smokes the ATT Atrix 2 (on stock though). It is blazing fast with no overclocking.

I guess what he is saying is that it doesn't get the same benchmarks as Ext4, and I know that is because it is showing the I/O speed as slower, like RFS did versus EXT4. I know benchmarks are crap and yaffs2 feels faster than BML completely. Soooooo then the question is are the benchmark tests not testing I/O speeds accurately due to the differences in MTD and BML or was there things in BML that fooled the tests?

I'm thinking that maybe a rogue app is doing this. However finding the specific app is the hard part. Every time this happens, the phone lags like crazy..sometime it doesn't even react to touch. I have to remove / replace the battery or if possible clear the ram.
But I don;t believe everything works on CM10...does it? I thought I read that the sound doesn't work on the latest nightly #25

absurd, both my phones are on stock and the phones never slow down.
I dont use a task killer and I never reboot the phones.
Just disable the annoying bloatwares and you should be fine. (I disabled 20 of them).
Well my thing is that with all the hype about this phone being fast and what not and having 2GB of ram, I shouldn't be having this issue. The phone shouldn't slow down to a crawl where it does nothing at all and I have to do a battery pull or if able, clear the ram.
I understand, I can flash CM10, which I'm running right now by the way and/or freeze the bloatware. But in order to use both these methods, you have to be rooted. What about the person that isn't rooted?
Because I sale/trade phones alot, I've the oppourtunity to own 3-4 other S3's and I experienced the same issues with them.
How about do not keep activities ?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
you realize in that screenshot, he has 490MB free ram. Ram is not the issue for a slowdown. it doesnt get slower as it gets fuller. it gets slow when its FILLED.he would have to launch a game of Grand Theift Auto III completely into memory before memory would cause the system to slow down.
a possible cause would be kernel, or its settings. Stock kernel? ya sounds right.
Unused ram is wasted ram, or so I've always heard. It clears it as needed so I doubt that's the issue. My phone was pretty sluggish stock as well and I had a gb of free ram on the norm.

stock mine runs usually around 700ish, after I do a few things maybe 2 times a day I go ahead and clear the memory and stop the loaded apps and it will drop to 400.
After like an hr of use my ram would be around 1.1-1.5gb of use and my phone would seem slugish .
Changed my background process limit to 4 to see how that helps..

The thing with the limit to 4 processes is that once you reboot the phone it usually resets to the default(what I found). The slugishness is due to something bogging the CPU i think more so than the memory. I think there was a thread about the CPU either being stuck in low speed(sluggish) or other times it can be stuck in full performance(battery drain). There is a fix for it, maybe that would help you?

Its definitely not your ram. You have plenty left. Its almost certainly a rogue app(s) that is using a ton of CPU in the background. This also explains why the allow only 4 background apps settings change worked temporarily for you. I've known a couple people with same issue even myself once, very briefly and used one of many apps/task manager and could easily find that an app was using 40-90% CPU on and off in background without even knowing it. Killed the app and eventually uninstalled it and been fine ever since.

I heard xda app screws up the performance, ironically.
Uninstall it, reboot, and use it for a day to see.
mine usually stays at 1 or 1.1gb free - on stock rogers, rooted rom
0.95GB of 1.62GB, no slow downs here.
usually i stay around 800MB-1GB.

Low low Quadrant Scores, should I be worried?

I wouldn't worry. You're probably just testing your phone after using it a lot

shouldn't make a huge difference of 3k, though...
looking at the scores, your 2D and 3D rendering scores are absolutely awful. yikes. your 2D score should be over 1k and your 3D score should be in the low/mid 2k range. quadrant is a subjective benchmarking app because it takes all of your scores and kind of creates an average, this is why it is not hugely reliable sometimes and also why scores are plummeted
looking at your other scores, however, they are extremely low as well. your mem score should be around 11k, while your CPU score should be around 10K, and IO should be a little faster than what you are showing as well.
i would say your system is being bogged down by another process while you are running the test.
quick question, what ROM are you running?
also, a way to tell if this is indeed a performance issue, and not just quadrant being quadrant... is to download a graphically intense game and play it.. if it skips and lags and jitters a whole lot (which i know was happening during your rendering tests based on the terrible 2D and 3D scores), then there is some issue there. if it runs fine, then simply put, don't worry about it.

I'm running stock no root. I actually tried playing a game yesterday and it would lag a little. But this started happening when I let me phone go idle for so long.

usage seems pretty normal.
are you using any cpu controlling apps?
also, just real quick, what ROM and kernel combo are you on bud?
Have you tried to re flash the stock rom? Other then that it has to be hardware.

I factory reset twice right after it updated to jb. If this continues, do I have to Odin the factory image?

Is your phone hot when you test? If so thermal throttling may be in place.
But from what it seems it seems like some sort of throttling is in effect. I would recommend another ROM and if it's still horrible you have a bad chip and warranty may be your only option.
