Noob Question About Battery Drain...... - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok I'm pretty sure this is old news to you guys but please take in consideration that I've only had the epic for about 4 days.......
So my concern is that the battery still drains while on the charger if im using it constantly.....this isnt the case with my past devices (Evo 4G, HD2, and the Nexus One)......Is it a Samsung thing? Did I forget to flash something to fix this??? Please dont flame me.......

The stock charger charges at ~600mah, while most devices charge at a full 1amp, I suggest using a different charger to charge your phone at a faster rate (I use the one from my Evo.)

Thanks.....i thought that might have been the issue....

Wow, I didn't even think about this xD gonna use my old hero's charger

Is it the charger block or the data cable?

The cable has absolutely no effect on charging rate, the block is what you need to change.

Ok...thx alot bro....

That's good info.... I've been wondering about that

[Q] high capacity battery mod?

ok first please forgive me if this is a newbe question but im looking for options.
i recently purchased the cheap $10 high capacity batter for the evo (2700 ma i know its probable way worse then that but for 10$ i could afford to try it)
ok so now im learning the evo wont charge the battery to its full capacity and for better results i should use an external charger.
ok for me its a bit of a hastle to do it i know for most its not an issue but what i am wondering is, if there is a way to mod the battery (again only 10$ so im not too worried if it breaks as long as it dosent harm the evo)
i was thinking if there is room under the extended door cover to cut a charger port or somthing to charge the battery bypassing the need to use the evo micro usb and alowing for a full high capacity charge.
is somthing like this even possible? thanks in advanced and like i said sorry if its a silly question..
ps... non rooted evo no cutom roms or anyhting completely stock (for now, till i learn android a bit)
By a battery wall charger...I have one and I don't get the sudden drops at all when I change batteries

really slow battery charging (via USB and wall...)

Obviously worse with the USB charging. Barely charging at all that way, in fact. But even with the wall charging, it is very very slow -- anyone else having this problem? Any known fixes?
Yes I agree it is slow... Very slow.
My Photon was very fast charging up, it was incredible.

Guys... The original epic charges super slow. The epic touch 4g charges way faster than the original epic even with a bigger battery.

That's how it is for me as well. Its much faster than the Epic. I don't know how it compares to the Photon.

Samsung smartphones are generally slow charging. My Nexus S 4g takes 4 to 6 hours to charge. Head on over to Samsung Galaxy S2 forum and you will hear the same complaints. Previous models, and I think Epic Touch are too, built to limit charge rate to 650 ma max. It may limit the charge rate even further if the phone is being used while charging.
This was the info I was able to dig up while researching the cause of my slow charging Nexus S.
Photon charged about 5x faster than my epic... So gs2 should be slower than photon..

Isn't the charging rate partially a function of the kernel? I could swear that one of the devs at SDX tweaked a kernel for the Moment, and one of his tweaks was "Increased power draw from USB for quicker charging."
Best way is chrage at nite time

Yes, but IIRC no one was successful at manipulating for the OG epic, not sure if it was galaxy related or not. Hopefully we'll have a dev who can make it happen on this device.

Takes longer to fill a bigger tank.

What bigger tank? The Evo 3d is about the same capacity battery and recharges about twice as fast. Same goes for the Motorola Atrix.

I thought that the 3D had a 1730 mAh battery?
Not that its a huge difference, of course...
Wouldn't charging it slower allow the battery to last longer? I don't mean like longer as in on one charge, I mean like as in years. Batteries have a tendency to go bad after a few years of use and can't be charged the same way after a while. But afaik with smaller Ma being used, its supposed to delay the aging effect of the batteries.
My Epic 4G and now the Touch always have charged slowly. To combat this, I use my old Palm Pre charger dongle (the part the plugs into the wall) and connect the Epic's USB cord to it and things speed up a bunch. I'm not sure if I'm damaging my batteries, but I have done that for a year on my OG Epic and haven't noticed any battery deterioration. I also purchased a fast charger for the car and it does the same thing--very speedy. So I don't think that it's the phone or the cable or the OS, but rather the actual plug. So you might go and look for a replacement plug from another phone or a a generic one and use that to charge. It has worked well for me.
That's rediculous it shouldn't take more than 3 hours for a complete charge and 6 hours for a partial charge makes the device useless this isn't the 70'a
If you let the battery drain all the way, I'll get a full charge in about 2.5 hours. If you keep plugging in during the day, charging will then be very very slow.
My experience anyway.

[Q] Battery Pack (Tecknet)

Which one is better for the Nexus? I don't know a lot about.. under/over-charging and how the whole voltage thing works so...
http://www.amazon.com/New-Trent-iDu...0Q42/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1322248391&sr=8-4
Versus
http://www.amazon.com/iEP380-II-Dua...DVLU/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1322248412&sr=8-3
I see one is 7000mAh and the other is 5000mAh but... is there any other technical difference? Will they both work flawlessly? Harm the Nexus battery/phone in some way?
Ty.
they both just act like chargers for any USB device. The 7000mAh one is better just because it has more power so you can charge devices for longer.
I'm also debating about getting it... already spent a lot this week.. soooooo haha
I'm just worried one of them might harm my battery over time because of... Incorrect Voltage or something.
I noticed the 7000mAh pack has a charge port that says 5v1a while the other one has 5mAh or something. Anyone able to make sure they both are safe to use and won't over or under charge or hurt my phone in the long run

I ordered today TeckNet iEP380-II 7000mAh and I think it's safe and I read comments from people that's charging very fast;-)I'm flying to NY and I want watch some nice film on amazing screen;-)

The bigger one will probably charge faster. Thats not guaranteed though if they sdded a chip to filter how much it can charge.

Does the price factor into this? The 5000mAh is discounted to 20gbp while the bigger pack is fixed at that price.

[Q] Can different chargers mess with your battery?

So i recently busted my default charger and started using one i bought, its not samsung brand, but lately i've been noticing that my battery dies quicker, does this seem look like normal battery life or is it possible that having a different type of charger is screwing with my battery? All i use my phone for is texting/phone calls. Thanks in advance
What are the power output on the charger? It seems that it drops really fast even during standby. The charger that came with the nexus is rated at 5v @ 1a.

Have you checked BetterBatteryStats? Looks like that phone is almost always awake, except during one period where the battery had less of a downslope. Also, it looks like even during the downslopes your phone is charging. Something doesn't seem right here, and I doubt it's your charger. It looks more like some application or other software is eating your battery for breakfast.
Yeah i also forgot to say, sometimes i'd look at my phone while in out and it would randomly say its charging. When its obviously not. The brand of the charger is called "On the go", no idea what kind of charge it delivers.

Are you on stock or have you tried flashing back to stock? If the problem continues even with a clean install of the stock software, it seems like the USB charging board might be messed up and may need replacing.

I've always wondered about this too. I seem to have a range of chargers that are micro USB that are 5v but < 1a. Is it safe to use these or not?
Yes i flashed it and am on a rooted version.

Alright i'll look into that, thanks guys
I'm Curious About This Too
I've been using the power block from my old Motorola OG Droid, with an output of 5.1V - 850mA, along with the usb cable that came with my old Palm Pre Plus (its nearly 52" long, almost 4 1/2ft!) andi have no idea what that's rated for. I seem to be doing fine as far as I can tell. It charges quickly on AC, nothing overheats.
But what are the consequences of using a power source with this kind of difference, if any? Consequences to using a power source with a greater difference?

Not saying it works but my friends phone was doing same phone kept saying it was still charging and screen wouldn't sleep , are u using a live wallpaper ? If u are try getting something non live and see if that helps . His phone since has stopped showing the charging icon and screen wake has reduced dramatically

Yes, the "a" (amperage) doesn't matter. It's just telling you how fast it can charge your phone, higher the amperage is, the faster it'll charge.
You can also determine how many watts the charger will consume by multiplying the Voltage by Amps. So if your charger was rated at 5v @ 1.5a, it will use about 7.5 watts. If it's less than 1a, like .6a, just put a decimal before the number.

Is it safe to use the Samsung GT 10.1 charging bring with the E4GT?

Trying to reduce clutter and use less outlets on my desk at home, I have a GT 10.1 and the E4GT and was wondering if it was safe to use the brick from the 10.1 with my micro usb charging cable for the E4GT.
I know they have different amps, the GT is rated higher, so it should charge the E4GT faster. Just not sure if this is safe.
I know for Blackberry's you can buy the rapid playbook charger and use it on the phones for a faster charge. Now that I think about it, I have used that Playbook quick charger with my E4GT. It works fine but I just hope I am not damaging my battery.
Thanks

Well, you can charge it faster but i will over time reduce the battery life. coming from an electrical back round, The best thing for the battery is bring it up on a slow charge. Lessens the chance of burning/shorting out a cell. L-Ion batteries are great for not having a memory like Ni-Cad or Ni-MH. So i frequently throw my phone on the stock charger a few times thru out the day. I would recommend you stick with your stock charger as it was ment for that battery. hope this helps.

Thanks, I did not realize that a fast charge can harm the lithium batteries. On a side note, lithium batteries can only be charged a certain amount of times correct? So if you charge your battery say four times a day, you have used up four charge times/cycles?
Thanks
A sprint tech told me that our phones have a built-in safety, and will not engage in charging the battery or damage it in any way if the amperage is incompatible on the charger.
Beware: this information came from a sprint rep over the phone, and I wouldn't even begin to know how to verify it.
Yes they are limited to certain amount of times they can be charged. I'd have to look it up again why tho.

No need to look up the reason, just wanted to make sure that I was correct in thinking that. I try to charge my phone only once per day and at night, if I have to charge it up during the day I will but I try not to keep pulling it on and off of the charger.
Thanks
OK. Yeah there are a lot of tweaks out there. Like if u use voltage control, use agat or sleshepic's TW ICS kernels and under volt and use conservative govener. Really helps battery life. Also depends how you use it
